I never really go out. Sitting there in my desolate room on the desk taking down notes. My life had never meant anything to me. No friends, no family, no lover and I had was goldfish. Yea pretty depressing. As I wrote down the notes, I was studying to be a nurse. My house was small, if you could even call it a house. Onigiri was placed on the desk alongside it with was bottled water. That’s when I realized that I barely had food in the mini fridge. Great just want I need, a restock I mean this was the least of my plans, going out my weekend was studying, sleeping, repeat. But I couldn’t starve. The boring sound of the laptop was cancelled out so with that I made up my mind. I’d have to go out, it was inevitable. So, with that I quicky slammed my laptop shut and closed my book. I changed into suitable outside clothes, black jeans, and a black tank top. I grabbed my grey trench coat and threw it on. It had everything, my wallet key, you got the gist. As I pulled out my key I realized. I need to feed the fish, I mean God knows what could happen to me id want my fishes to be feed before I probably got kidnapped. I put a bit of goldfish flakes into the tank watching the fishes eat it eagerly. A hint of a smile was drawn on my face. As I watched them eat so eagerly. And then I went outside locking the door with me tossing on black boots. Then walking out.
Sigh, I climbed down the flight of stairs. Then out of the apartment. The cool Shibuya air hit me, it was a fairly nice day. The sun was out, I saw a group of teenagers running about giddily an elderly woman walking her dog. Nothing out of the ordinary, billboards as bright as ever. I took a quick walk to the convenience, reaching it swiftly with just a turn. I walked in grabbing a basket fist wrapped around the handle. I walked through the various aisles grabbing all the stuff I needed, all preprocessed, it was the same stuff I enjoyed mixed with a few treats cause, why not. But then I heard a commotion glancing at the source of the sound. A group of people gathered around the exit of the store. Not to leave but to look, arms extended, phones on video recording. A bunch of ‘oohs’ and ‘ahhhs’ parents pointing that the source of light. I tilted my head slightly, and that’s when I saw it. Fireworks. Fireworks, ood a new brand opening? Introduction to a new technological device. Either way it intrigued me, I didn’t walk to spend too much time pondering about something pointless. So, I ducked my head down looking at different food.
Then I heard it saw it. In fact, I heard everything go down by a million decibels the overhead lights of the store shutting down. Nothing could be heard. I lifted my head, to see nothing, nothing no signs of life. Everybody was gone by a matter of seconds.
“What the...hell.” I muttered under my breath. Low as ever. Id felt a wave of fear rush over me. I walked outside the store glancing around my surroundings. Looking for any signs off life. The billboards turned white the luminous glow almost blinded me. In big words in said ‘WELCOME TO THE BODERLANDS” instructions were flashed on the screen. I saw illuminating lights in an office building walking towards the light. As I reached the doors I sighed heavily. I saw a table with many people gathering around it. As I walked closer, I saw a singular phone grabbing it turning it on. “Facial recognition starting.” A robotic voice ringed out from the phone. I glanced around the room reading the various faces.
A woman shy looking, short. An elderly woman looking around the room worried. A stern looking woman her jaw was clenched tight. A shy nerdy looking man. A tall skinny man he looked stern but could read through him, he was scared. A younger looking man was stood beside the taller one, he looked fearful, almost like a cowering mouse compared to the taller man. The one that stood out to me the most, was a man in a white hoodie leaning against the wall, platinum blond hair framed his face. Dark shadows covered half his face, but I could detect a smirk. Nonchalance, I couldn’t read him, his body language, face, posture nothing.
Then instructions came out.
Rules. There will be once cat, among all you mice, you must kill the mouse.
Please wear the collars that have been placed for you on the table.
We all wore the black collars.
To clear the game, you must kill the cat.
If the cat is not killed by the time limit, your collars will all blast, including the cat.
If all the mice die the cat wins.
Once all players decide on a cat you must all point at them. If all pointed the accused collar will be blasted.
That was when I saw all the panic ensue. People rushing to remove their collars but to no one’s surprise they didn’t come off. The nerdy mans voice rang out
“It’s you, isn’t it?!” I heard his accusation, but I didn’t bother to look up, he continued. “Hey, you miss Trench coat! Don’t act all mysterious!” I finally faced him. His finger pointed accusingly at me. “You think I’M the cat?” I asked him, my voice was low and smooth. “Yea acting like you don’t care! It must be you!” I stared back at him, unresponsively. Then the stern looking woman spoke up. “Are you really wasting our 2 hours?” she paused then pointed at him. “What if it’s you?” the said quickly while he looked dumbfounded. The added quickly “Bold of you to accuse a random woman. With no proof, you were using her as a scapegoat, weren’t you?” her reasoning was fast, logical. I abmired her, not for defending me but, at least she had reasoning. The man looked at her dumbfounded no response. The old woman and younger girl were huddled up. The mouse looking man hand his hands stuffed in his pocket. While the taller one’s arms were crossed. I had a finger pointed at me while the man who pointed his finger was also being pointed at. The tension in the room was thick. The hooded man was still rested against the wall his face growing amused.
“15 minutes” the taller man spoke. “We can’t waste time debating this. Somebody has to die; our lives are on the line here.”
“And how exactly will we do that?” the smart woman spoke.
“Two are accused, either or, they’ll help us out won’t they.” He said condescendingly
“Let’s make this a democracy.” I spoke up. “Vote on me or him. And however, it is, someone will die.” The tall man nodded, so didn’t the smart woman, the nerdy guy didn’t seem so keen on it, but point was made
Person to person voted one who it was. Once the votes were finalized, we decided on the nerdy guy. He had a horrified expression on his face pleading before he even spoke, his eyes said it all.
“Please no!” he pleaded as the first few fingers pointed. “I have a wife a kids what does she---” before he could finish the collar blasted and his limp body fell to the floor.
He was right. What did I have?
The game continued on like this for what felt like a decade. More blood, no escape. It was down to me the hooded guy, the tall guy and the coward.
Then the hooded man spoke up.
“it’s you isn’t it.” He pointed at the cowardly guy. “You made yourself look small to trick everyone in here. Didn’t you?” his voice low and smooth, before he could get another word out the taller man spoke. “Then its settled.” He said “It’s either him” he pointed and the hooded man. “or” he pointed at the coward. “Him.” I looked at the smart woman I figured she was on my side, I glanced at the coward then at her. Indirectly telling her ‘Vote him.’ She nodded and pointed at the coward, so did I. the tall man pointed at the hooded figure, majority of votes we placed. It was settled.
BOOM!! Blood splattered on my face. The coward feel to floor.
