@whispersong:
‘ i think the water is giving you stockholm syndrome. it looks JUST as brown as it did yesterday. actually, i think it might be more brown. ‘ there’s a wince as he stared down at the water, back leaning to rest against the cupboards so he could watch chase work. it was a lot more relaxing than most things they got up to these days. ‘ we could just drink the disgusting water. hey, maybe it’ll make us stronger or something. ‘
he ducked his head back under the sink, watching the pipes rattle and then looked at the water again. alex was clearly right, that water was looking no better. “ i know we’re kinda lacking in the super powers needed to keep up with this team, dude, but that’s a little excessive. if you drink that your super power will probably be having typhoid or something. ” he thumbs over his lip thoughtfully- and regrets it. “ gross, ” he wipes his mouth on his shirt and sighs, looking at the sink again. “ i think i’m gonna need you to help me find the water heater. ”

the aura nico gives off is carefully planned. karolina was right, she hides behind every dark layer of clothing and scowl placed firmly on her face. NOW SHE IS A LEADER. she’s caring too much about the missing kids she hides underground with. her new family. and chase is a part of that. “ name a time when trusting anyone was a benefit to you. “ she bites. what an unnecessarily harsh tone she regrets that moment it falls from her lips. though nico would never show it. keeping up the walls. KEEPING UP THE IMAGE. “ people rarely give me reason to trust them. and when they do— IT NEVER ENDS WELL. “ her mind screams to tell chase that she’s basically lying. she trusts the team. even alex, kinda. they all keep coming back together, despite everything. but chase choose to leave. it’s not even that she doubts his loyalty, his trust. chase’s situation is the thing she doesn’t trust. nico isn’t entirely sure they haven’t injected something to control chase and they’re watching through his eyes like this is that INSIDE OUT movie karolina made her watch. stupid cute animated emotions.
he is both good and bad at reading people. bad because he always wants to believe the best in people and good because a lot of the time it’s easy to see that the image they’re projecting is a facade. nico is hard to read. he knows that the dark make-up and clothes are a defence mechanism she threw up when amy died, because she didn’t want anyone to see her pain but somewhere along the line it’s just grown to be who she is. but the dark facade is just that, a facade. it doesn’t stop her biting comments from hurting, though. her comment a stark reminder that he had a nasty habit of trusting the wrong people and that it had never worked out well for him. well, not until right now. “ if you can’t trust your teammates to be there for you when you need to pass the ball then there might be something wrong with your team, or something wrong with you. you’re the captain of this team, nico and sometimes you’re going to have to trust that we know the plays and that we’ll support you and each other no matter what. ” alright, it’s a lacrosse metaphor, shut up.

sertralinelost:
boys. she lets out a half-snort, but not without a not-so-subtle roll of the eyes. of course he’d reply like that. and she can’t blame him. gert is a more physical person than most people know, and she’s also a bisexual person, so she can understand why the image of them could be … intriguing … and why chase doesn’t want to say anything that would get her upset or annoyed or insecure. but she’s not. somehow she’s confident that he wants her. although, she’s not sure what leads her to that confident opinion. maybe it’s the way he’s holding and looking at her this evening. most days since they consummated their feelings at the dance. she responds by merely flicking his chest and giving him a warning look, nothing more is needed or wanted at the moment.
she’s not sure if she believes him. or at least she doesn’t believe that she can take his words at face value. and she gets it, if she’s right. it’s easy to have low self-esteems when your parents are narcissistic world-class minds. it instills this disjointed psyche into her brain, and maybe it’s similar to him. but at least she’s conveyed that he’s important to her, and that he’s not just an idiot. well, he is an idiot, but not in all ways, and he’s way more than just an idiot. he’s her person and her duty is to keep trying, even when she wants to give up on herself. he depended on her, just as molly and old lace did. she hopes. reaching over, she pulls one of the blankets over their intertwined bodies, nestling in more and getting comfortable. “ maybe let’s just lay here. we don’t need to talk about anything. and yeah, i know. gert not talking? it must be a miracle. but really. “
he deserves that snort, he really does and he’d known it was coming. though he had also thought he’d probably get a barrage of complaints about how wrong literally everything about the sentiment had been. but he wasn’t about to lie to her and she’d been the one who’d brought up nico and karolina having sex- he was just telling her that they needed to change the subject before inquisitive minds wandered too far in that direction. but he definitely deserved the snort. he lowers his head to press a soft kiss against the top of her hair all the same, since she doesn’t seem to be mad at him or even like she’s about the chew him out for making rude comments. which is a win (and a first). he’ll chalk it up to her not feeling well, even though that usually ends in a lot more snapping.
she pulls a blanket up and over them- which is nice give that the subterranean mansion is very well protected from the harsh los angeles sunlight that bakes everything to a crisp. underground, they’re protected from that but that does mean it can get a little chillier down here sometimes. he doesn’t mind. it gives him more excuses to cuddle up to her. he holds her close and strokes a thumb over her shoulder slowly, rubbing circles into it, trying to dispel some of her tension that he already knows isn’t going anywhere. “ i like it when you talk, ” he says, immediately disagreeing with her comment about her not talking being a miracle. it’s not. “ you look really good when you’re passionate. ” and she’s very often very passionate about the subjects she talks about to him. he likes listening. “ but if you want quiet, we can be quiet. ” he’s not going to make her talk if she wants to chill. he just didn’t want her to think he didn’t like her talking usually, because he does.
sertralinelost:
she didn’t exactly regret saying something, she just wish she had used better words. sometimes she can be harsh, especially to the people that she loves. then again, she saw his anger, and she’s glad she said something. but it seems that in her attempts to comfort him, she isn’t doing a very good job. she doesn’t know what to say or do to make him see what she sees in him. to convince him that he isn’t a monster or something else. that he’s just very human. hell, she probably fucks up more than any of the runaways. she knows first hand what it’s like to do things you regret. but no matter that anger, no matter what chase felt, she knows it inside of her that he wouldn’t hurt her. maybe things that are inanimate. maybe even himself, but it’s not chase stein to lay hands on another woman. no matter if it was her or someone else.
obviously disagreeing with him isn’t working. so she needs to do something else to get through to him. gert wasn’t docile, she wasn’t one to be told she was wrong and just give up. and if she learned anything in debate club it was to try different approaches, to keep going. sometimes it was impossible, but it felt like most things were no longer impossible. not when her sister had superhuman strength, her friend ( friend? ) was an alien, and she had a psychic connection with a dinosaur genetically engineered by her homicidal parents. “ well – neither am i. i try to pretend like i am, but aren’t we all just spoiled kids from brentwood? “ she asks with a small huff. “ but all of this, makes me feel like maybe we can be better. i’ve seen it in you. and the others, too. i mean, just look at molly. out there playing vigilante. at least our parents haven’t tainted her. “ she lost her point somewhere in there. “ my point is, i see good in you. despite the not good. you need a punching bag? we’ll find you one, or something. but i’m not going to give up because you hit a wall or whatever. it’s not too late. “ she just hopes at least something she says resonates. she prays that he won’t give up and resign himself to the darkness.
she doesn’t understand. he doesn’t know how to make her understand. his own failing attempts at being a good person had nothing to do with the fact he was a spoiled brentwood kid, nor the fact he was a cis-gender (straight passing) white male with all the privilege in the world. or even his homicidal psycho parent(s). it was the monster inside his chest, the darkness that threatened him with every waking moment, every time he saw red or lashed out- even for the right reasons. there was still that twisted part of him that enjoyed it. that part of him that had wanted to pound brandon and lucas’s faces into mulch for daring to lay a hand on karolina. the part of him that would do that if given the chance and the right reasons. but how could he explain that? when hurting gert was something he had never wanted, something he couldn’t even fathom. he would have done anything to keep her safe, would do anything. but somehow it feels like telling her that he’d be willing to kill to keep her safe isn’t the romantic gesture tv and movies seem to think it is. in fact, it sort of tars him with the same brush as their parents, doesn’t it?
he pulls up handfuls of dirt and plant roots as he draws his fingers from the ground and he throws the clumps of mud and sand back down the hill in front of them, watches dirt rain down and the bigger bits thump into the softer top sand. he brushes dirty hands on his jeans, hardly caring that they didn’t exactly have a washing facility. it’s all a distraction from the fact he has no idea what to say to her to make this better. he can’t concede that maybe he is a good person because he knows he’s pretty amoral really. “ maybe having an outlet would help, ” he finally concedes quietly, turning his head to look at her. she still takes his breath away, purple hair glinting in the sun, expression worried- about him of all the dumb things. “ i never want to be like him, i never want to make you...anything less than what you are. and i never want to hurt you. or scare you. ” he’s watched his mother move around the house like a frightened mouse for years, seen everyone forget what a fantastic mind she has because victor freaking stein is an all encompassing vortex that takes everything good about a person and keeps it hidden in his black hole of a soul.
sertralinelost:
he doesn’t understand, and honestly gert doesn’t blame him. she’s not really speaking too soundly – it’s a lot more difficult when it’s regarding your own circumstances and feelings and not justice for the environment or something more generalized. that she could do. she could do this too, she remembers how open they were when they first found the mansion, but she’s devolved over time, and hopes that maybe she can find her voice again. and here with chase was the best start she could have. but still – it’s annoying. they’re talking about her again and not chase, not what he needs. he’s the hurt one. but if he wants to talk about her, she’ll oblige, albeit begrudgingly. “ no, chase. “ she tells him, head shaking. “ it doesn’t feel like my room anymore … because … well, because when you left, all the things that made it feel like home left, too. “ she hopes he doesn’t take it the wrong way. she’s not blaming him for it right now. she just wants him to stay. “ so, stay? don’t go back to the garage again. “
he often has problems following what she’s saying, that’s nothing new, but in this instance it seems of dire importance that he somehow manage to wrap his brain around it. she tells him no, this is still her room, which makes sense because she loves this room and all its weird quirks. it has space for old lace, space for her salvaged books, space for the bed and then lots more space besides. he can see why she likes it. he liked it too. likes it. but when she confesses the truth, real and unfiltered, that when he’d stormed out in a huff after the hospital instance he’d taken away everything that made the room feel homey he exhales a soft breath. he understands now, because she’s reading his mind again, about how no room without her in it seemed to feel right. the garage had been a distraction and his parents’ mansion had seemed too large and too empty and too claustrophobic all at once. and now gert is asking him to stay, like they can just pick up where they left off on that night of the quincenera and he can just come back and sleep here like it’s no big deal. he can’t fathom that she’d want to sleep in the same bed as him anymore. not at the same time, anyway. “ what, are we gonna timeshare the bed? ” she’s sitting on a chair three feet away. that doesn’t bode well for their ability to share.
To think that we could stay the same.
