Made me smile... :-)
'Happy All The Time' - The Flatmates A perfect piece of fun indie pop! Although I don't like being reminded of the fashion so much...
The Italian Job (1969)
My favourite line from a classic British movie and what I have on the viewing list for this evening...
The ONLY thing to listen to on a cloudy 'Good Friday'
I.Y.Y. Festival 1985
I remember this festival vividly as it was the cause of another huge row with my mum. Big Flame and Terry + Gerry were brilliant. James put on a great show.. the rest have kind of faded into the realms of the forgotten
'I Was Born A Unicorn' - The Unicorns
fun on an otherwise very dull day!
'Bride of the Monster' (1955)
There really is no greater slightly campy monster than Bela Lugosi... an Ed Wood classic!
Jesus And The Mary Chain live at the Hacienda in 1985...
... possibly the shortest gig I have ever been to. But still pretty good
'Do I Love You (Indeed I Do) - Frank Wilson
Northern Soul classic - Keep The Faith
I went to this 'event' with Ash in 1986 (and got into some serious shit with my mum over it too). I so wanted to see Dislocation Dance and they didn't disappoint at all. The Bodines were also really good. I don't really remember any of the other bands.
'A hickey from Kenickie is like a hallmark card' Watching 'Grease' again today and still think Rizzo is best!
'What Do They Say About Me' - Strawberry Whiplash
*sigh* so sweet... A recommendation from my brother-in-twee from across the sea!
Rough Peel Music, 140 Vivian Street, Wellington (photo courtesy of neatplaces.co.nz)
I am a big supporter of independent record shops (and independent shops in general come to that) and Rough Peel is one of my favourite record shops in Wellington. I spent most of yesterday afternoon browsing through their wide selection of used and new vinyl, not looking for anything in particular - just seeing what was there. There was so much to choose from.. so I ended up with 5 beauties to take home and cherish :-) The perfect way to spend a Saturday afternoon.
If you are in the area... drop in!
'Pristine Christine' - The Sea Urchins
I have been going through some of my old flyers and came across a load of stuff about the Sea Urchins. I thought a listen to was long overdue.. so here is one of my favourites from them. Twee as Fuck but still awesome!
I found this flyer wedged inside ' Psychocandy'. I have no recollection of the record shop at all and certainly don't think I bought Psychocandy from there.
I do remember Affleck's Palace though - a hodge podge of market stall like stores located in an old department store building. I spent far too hours there throughout my teens, snooping through second hand clothes (that's what they were called in those days) and rifling through the many record stalls that were there. I also used to buy my luminous hair gel and ozone killing hair spray from the 50p shop down in the basement. One of the best things of all, was that I had a Saturday job there for a little while. A Saturday job at Afflecks almost made me cool for the very briefest of moments!
Things all started to go a lot more upmarket in the 90s as Affleck's tried to establish itself as a fashion hub. I think even Eastern Bloc records was in there for a little while then too (but I am not sure). I haven't been there for a long time but do have some incredibly fond memories.
No man has better lips than Mac McCulloch from 'Echo and the Bunnymen'!
Completely Perfect!
'How Soon Is Now?' - The Smiths Oh god.... Rip it up and start again? I thought I knew who I was - now it seems I don't know anything at all! All change? ... Is this what a midlife crisis feels like?
