INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE | THE VAMPIRE LESTAT — 1.07 “The Thing Lay Still” — 3.07 “The Failures”
3x02 vs 3x07
These days, lots of public libraries have a "library of things" collection where you can check out kitchen appliances or yard tools or toys, and, as a children's library assistant, the most popular library of things item that I handle regularly is a plastic scepter thingy called like "unicorn princess magic wand". And whenever I check it out I make a big show of looking at the little kid and being like "do you solemnly swear to use your unicorn princess magic powers only for good and never for evil?"
And pretty much without fail, the little kid will get the world's most mischievous grin and go "I'm gonna use it for EVIL!!!"

INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE | THE VAMPIRE LESTAT — 3.07 “The Failures”
Louis realizing he's part of an Italian family now
"Get out," I whispered. The word trailed off and suddenly my voice swelled again. "Get out," I said. And again my voice didn't stop. It merely went on until I said the words again with shattering violence: "GET OUT!" — THE VAMPIRE LESTAT, Anne Rice
thinking about her (josh o’connor’s mysterious playlist titled “sam reid”)
there was a good post about the anti blackness in the tvl finale, and i don’t want to derail that post, nor do i really even want to argue directly with anyone, but some of the replies are soooo frustrating
people were bringing the “me too, sometimes” line into that discussion and i think it’s so weird that people on here are purportedly anti-gender essentialism and then suddenly ok with saying that they shouldn’t have included a line like that because they’re showing lestat masculinely showing off his six pack all season so it doesn’t make sense
firstly, wooooow at the assumption that someone showing off their bare chest/generally presenting mostly as their assigned gender means it doesn’t make sense for someone to say that, even if we disregard some of the gender nonconformity/decide that that nonconformity is just playing into the rockstar persona. it is transmisogyny to equate lestat’s biology with his gender.
have you never had a person in your life express anything like this despite otherwise presenting as their assigned gender?
(i understand that it’s different if they’re fictional in that if they’re trying to set something up you would like signs first, but this wasn’t some big “lestat is a woman” reveal where that argument would maybe make sense)
secondly, lestat is bisexual. maybe it’s my bias as a gender nonconforming/masc but also cis lesbian, but many cis queer people have a different relationship to their gender than cis straight people. it is not that surprising to me that a queer person would say this, and they don’t have to set up lestat fully being a trans woman to show him expressing that, or sometimes wishing he was a woman. god forbid we all have some complexity here in a very gay show
for a show that is, if nothing else, so incredible at making things live on the line or in the shades of gray or in multiple places at once, it’s kind of crazy to make it be one thing
i loooove getting to watch tvl with one of my roommates last night she was like yeah and then they found out that their ex was moving into a trailer together with their other ex and i was like that is all time armand level deceit to quote louis de pointe du lac!!
i was worried i might feel too feminine when my hair started to get this long even if that seemed fun to play with for a bit. rest assured i look dykey as ever
dammit i was cooking with a post 3 paragraphs in and my draft was deleted
Season 3, Episode 6 "Montreal" THE VAMPIRE LESTAT (2022–)
with few exceptions we have only seen black characters graphically get brutalized. they had closeups of louis’s body and face after lestat tried to murder him showing the extent of what was done, we saw just how burned and disfigured he was after her suicide attempt, claudia’s death is one of the most graphic i’ve seen on any tv show, we got closeups of their ankles slashed and shots of louis being kicked in the head and claudia being shoved into a box of live rats by the coven members. the majority of louis’s scenes in episode 7 were of his decapitated head on a pike, forced to look at his body as it flailed, begging to die, forced to apologize in something so close to a saw trap that it was bordering on copyright infringement while being painted as cruel and deserving of the abuse and then branded by armand.
we didn’t see any shots of lestat’s head in the bowling bag. we saw him burn, but it was portrayed as comical. we did not see bruce as he died, we did not see lestat get torn up by the wolves, we did not watch nicki die. in the majority of the scenes where a white character is injured, the action is cut away, out of frame, out of focus, mostly implied.
the extent of what we saw of the brutality of black characters now feels almost fetishistic. at the end of episode 105, lestat is floating in the air looking dreamy and louis is beaten to a pulp on the ground; episode 207, lestat is put together in a suit with his hair done and louis and claudia have been severely beaten. like, after this season, the rest of the show just looks weird.
