⠀⠀⠀⠀the irritation appeared almost instantly and katherine's expression hardened, disbelief flashing across her features before giving way to something sharper.
⠀⠀⠀⠀"your happiness?" she repeated. a short, incredulous laugh escaped her. "when exactly did i take that from you, stefan? because unless my memory has suddenly failed me, you were perfectly happy."
⠀⠀⠀⠀the words came quicker now.
⠀⠀⠀⠀"you loved me." a faint shake of her head followed, knowing that he refused to aknowledge that truth and acting like she made this up. "you told me you wanted a future with me. you swore your devotion. you spoke about forever as though it was the most natural thing in the world." he made her feel like she had a home. he made her feel whole and happy. there was an edge to her voice now that was not anger alone; it was also hurt.
⠀⠀⠀⠀"and before you say it, no, i did not compel those feelings." her jaw tightened because it made her mad that he still believed she compelled his love. "you know that. you remember everything. every conversation. every moment. every feeling."
⠀⠀⠀⠀"the only thing i compelled away was your fear; your fear of what i was. nothing more."
⠀⠀⠀⠀for a moment she simply stared at him. "and as for turning you into a vampire... you know perfectly well that was never supposed to happen in that way."
⠀⠀⠀⠀the frustration finally surfaced because how could he not see this? how could he still believe she wanted him to suffer?
⠀⠀⠀⠀"i never wanted you to die; i never wanted damon to die. that was not the plan. i wanted you to have a choice."
⠀⠀⠀⠀the memory still burned. the fear of death she had that fateful night. being dragged away, the vervain that burned so much it made her slip unconscious. the muzzle; treated like an animal.
⠀⠀⠀⠀"if you truly want to revisit that night, then explain something to me. how do you suppose your father and his men suddenly knew exactly what i was?"
⠀⠀⠀⠀a beat passed. "how do you explain the vervain in your blood?"
another. "how do you explain that they were already waiting for me?" her voice grew colder. "waiting with a freaking muzzle and enough confidence to drag me away like some captured beast." katherine folded her arms, not wanting to give away how deeply scaring that experience had been for her.
⠀⠀⠀⠀"we had an agreement, stefan." the disappointment in her voice was unmistakable, even after all these years. "and somehow, after our conversation, your father knew exactly where to be and exactly what to do." stefan had betrayed her; he told his father. katherine had trusted stefan. and now he wants to act like she manipulated him and stripped him of his choices? this was a choice; a decision stefan made.
⠀⠀⠀⠀"you may hate me for many things but do not stand there and pretend i orchestrated that disaster. because i didn't."
⠀⠀⠀⠀quieter now, though no less intense. "and you know i never intended for either of you to end up in transition. you also know that becoming a vampire was ultimately your choice. you drank human blood, stefan. and unless history has changed itself, you made certain damon did too."
