Prince Ferdinand d´Orleans, Duke d´Alencon. C 1870.
Prince Ferdinand d´Orleans, Duc d´Alencon. 1860s.
Opie: ‘Can can’, portrait of Harold Davidson, a local 'character’ in Guernsey (Channel Islands).
Portrait of a Russian peasant, from the early years of the 20th century.
“The Island of Men with Long Beards” - an Iranian manuscript illustration of a story from The Thousand Nights and a Night, derived from the Persian هزار افسان , itself incorporating Indian elements. The inscription at the top is in Farsi, and would reveal all - unlike the sweet gentlemen in the picture - if we knew someone who could translate it.
If they are ‘dervishes’ and they dance, then the sight of swinging beards and swinging sex-organs would be a delight to behold!
The motif of three naked men with long beards occurs in Christian Orthodox ikons - see a page on one of my websites : http://www.beyond-the-pale.uk/albanian3.htm
