3D printed lace armour; a project exploring emotional protection, femininity, and strength.
Lace designed in Illustrator, extruded in Rhino, deformed in Maya, and printed in ABS plastic on an UP Box FDM printer.
3D Printed Lace Armour
This project is a commentary on the symbolic or emotional armour that women wear everyday. The lace ties into notions of "women's work", such as the needlework our great-grandmothers would have spent hours handcrafting. The purpose of making lace into armour is to invest a traditionally masculine object (armour) with femininity, and to draw on the strength and power of something traditionally seen only for its beauty and fragility.

Lace armour prototyping to be 3D printed later this week. Lace detailing by me, original Barbie armour models by Jim Rodda.Â
I can’t believe this took me literally 90 hours to make. And I’m gonna keep working on it ;_;
