That day I was almost accidentally in a music shop; one of those shops that sell every kind of things, from instruments to pieces to build them yourself. It was a Saturday morning and, like most of the saturdays, I took some free time to wander around Milano and go to my lab to see what I had to do there. I was wandering through the shelves and guitars hanging on the walls, ordered by brand and model, when I noticed a chrome-plated bass guitar bridge cover Fender style. Quite an unusual and sometimes useless tool, but when I noticed it I was struck by it and thought I could use it for the lapsteel I was crafting! I bought the bass-bridge, it was not exactly cheap, but I thought that could be useful for me. That strange shell-shaped thing stayed on my lab shelves for months. Meanwhile I built another guitar (a lapsteel again) but didn’t apply the bridge-cover on it, I didn’t plan to put it on and there was no room left anyway. A couple months after that I started a new project and planned to use the “chromed-shell”; I basically designed the whole guitar on it. I saw somewhere some old-style lapsteel players using that bridge-cover to rest their right hand while playing. Unfortunately I don’t think this is very useful, because many musicians prefer to rest the palm of their hand on the bridge, in order to dampen the strings when they play. It depends on the style and way of playing. However, the “big shell” looks pretty cool… and if it should bother, you can just unscrew a couple screws and removed it! The instrument is made of one-piece two-layer of milled spruce wood and finished entirely by hand, Gretsch bridge with tailpiece Gretsch with fixed ropes in the upper body, head stock mechanics Planet Waves, style Duesemberg P90 single-coil pickup. Ecological paint 3 ultra thin polyurethane layers.
