Open letter to YouTube.
YouTube. For all the years of entertainment youâve made possible, and all the opportunities youâve presented to so many people, Iâm grateful. Youâve provided so much for so many, creators and consumers alike. I owe my job, and in a broad sense my general life to your platform. It takes a LOT to tear down that sort of built up trust. But youâve managed to do it.
The constant changes to âthe algorithmâ, fair enough. The âsudden random bugsâ that didnât send out content to all the subscribers. Fine. Even when you, for some godforsaken reason decided that âSubscribeâ was no longer enough, but you felt the need to add a bell, and yet a secondary step to go from âmost contentâ to âall contentâ. Whatever. One would think a chronological feed of whatever recent post has been made by a channel would suffice. But youâre not alone in being guilty of this, every social network is doing it, why not you too. When the âadpocalypseâ hit, and so many channels suffered, some even being unable to sustain, still most seemed to rally and say itâs not YouTubeâs fault, YouTube is not the bad guy, there are only some bad creators, bad users. Theyâre doing their best.
Iâm no longer convinced of this. When your system automatically flags the majority of content uploaded as ânon-advertiser friendlyâ without having a clue what the video actually is. When you offer no way whatsoever, of whitelisting a channel with good track record. When you manipulate feeds and recommended videos, and prioritize content that will make you money, over content that actually appeals to the user. When youâre SO clearly granting preferential treatement to those who can âmake you look goodâ rather than being good. When a âtop tierâ creator on your platform can make a multimilliondollar-living out of being as disrespectful and morally despicable as (sometimes) legally possible. When a âtop tierâ creator on your platform can broadcast a victim of suicide to millions of underage people⊠and you do nothing.
Not a single action has been taken, the best you could do was to claim your âhearts went out to the familyâ. Why not add in âone like equals one prayerâ and âevery retweet saves a childâ while youâre at it. You donât care, this much is clear. You donât care, as long as youâre making money. You are a business, I know, but you CAN do both. You so badly want to be TV, that you never stopped to consider why so many people have almost stopped watching TV all together, in favour of you. Count your blessings, that you have no competition, I for one would jump ship in a heartbeat. If Iâm wrong, tell me. Tell us, something. Anything. Ever.

Managing 2
Summary: Thirteen years have passed. Both Dory and Michael are thirteen, and almost thirteen respectively. Doryâs birthdayâs in a couple of months. School is hectic. The joys of raising teens. And then comes one more surprise for the household. How will they handle this? Are they too old?
Now onto the story:
Thirteen years passed so quickly, that it seemed like merely blinking had brought teens into existence at the red brick house with the white picket fence. As usual, with teens, the house was in chaos. âPhil?â Dan called out.
âYeah?â Phil questioned.
âWhereâs my hair straightener?â Dan asked.
âI thought you didnât straighten your hair anymore?â Phil asked, as he and Dan almost collided in the hallway.
âOnly for important meetings, and Iâve got a doozy today, our schedules are overflowing, and weâve got kids to wake up,â Dan answered.
Phil sniffed the air,
âI think I know where the spare hair straightener ended up.â Phil went up the stairs, and went to where Michaelâs room was at.
Michael was just about to turn thirteen in a few weeks and was showing his mischievousness. When Phil entered the room, he found the  straightener plugged into the wall, and a Barbieâs face smashed against the hot part.
âMichael Lester-Howell; how many times have we told you no setting things on fire in the house?â Phil yelped out.
âToo many times to count,â Michael grinned up at Phil.
âUnplug that, and give it to your Papa, and give the Barbie back to your sister,â Phil said, as the straightener dropped out of Michaelâs hand and landed near his fatherâs trainer.
âDo Not set another pair of trainers on fire either,â Phil said, as he watched Michael unplug the instrument and hand it to him.
âThank you,â Phil said, and went back down the stairs.
âThat Was A Collectorâs Edition BARBIE!!!!â A cry of anger rent the air, and Phil closed his eyes, and opened them, when he met Dan down in the foyer.
âHere you go,â Phil handed Dan, the hair straightener.
âWhyâs there a chunk of plastic on here? Canât I just use one of your straighteners?â Dan asked.
âWell, our son was being a sneaky-snek and he melted one of the Barbiesâ faces. According to our daughter, she was a collectorsâ itemâŠ.IDK,â Phil shrugged his shoulders.
âAnd yeah, whatâs mine is yours. Go ahead and use my straightener,â Phil said. Â
Dory collected action figures, and little figurines along with her various Barbies from around the world. She had a Dutch one, a Spanish one, and a British one. Michael was into the consoles and games part of  his genetics makeup. Soon, heâd probably be vlogging and making videos of his own.
A little while later, Dory came down the stairs, a curtain of her strawberry red hair was hiding half her face, and her arms were crossed as she was looking at the ground.
âIt was the Barbie I got for Christmas from Grandma Catherine,â Dory pouted, and she looked with tear filled brown eyes up at her two fathers.
âThe vintage one?â Dan prompted. Dory nodded, and her shoulders slumped a little.
âCâmon, letâs get some breakfast in you. Your Papa Bear is going to an important meeting at the YouTube office, and weâre driving you to school. Like usual. But I get to be here, and pick you up from school,â Phil outlined the plan for the day, as he took Doryâs shoulders and guided her through to the kitchen.
She allowed herself to be seated, and put both of her elbows on the table. Phil, gently pushed them off. She put her hands in her lap instead.
âDada!â She huffed. Whenever she was beyond angry that babyish word was uttered.
âI seem to remember a two year old of mine putting her Barbiesâ faces near our scented candles. The sprinklers came on, and it was a right mess,â Phil started, and turned his head to face her.
âI know. But I was two! Heâs thirteen,â Dory argued. She was the most laid back of them all.
The peacemaker. Michael was a bit hot headed, and yet he was always cracking jokes and things.
âHeâs also full of testosterone. Unfortunately Danâs predictions didnât come true and he didnât want to wear sparkly heels or a sparkling tutu,â Phil answered.
âWell at least he wasnât forced to identify himself,â Dory nodded.
âYouâll still have time to figure yourself out. You can do whatever you want. Within reason and no going to jail,â Phil said, placing a plate in front of his daughter.
Michael sauntered in a few moments later. Dory glanced up and gave a slight glare at her sibling.
âWhy did you destroy my priceless Barbie?â Dory bluntly asked, sounding a bit like Dan.
âIt was there, and the straightener was there, so I experimented,â Michael answered, as he dug into his own breakfast.
âStop teasing your sister,â Phil set down a third plate
. âSorry,â Michael said.
âYouâll have to replace it you know,â Dan came in straightening his tie, and leaning down a little, and over to kiss Philâs cheek.
âI will,â Michael said.
âWhatâs the important meeting about Papa Bear?â Dory asked.
Dan made a face, âAdult things.â
âEwwww,â Phil sympathised.
âWell youâre lucky they only wanted to see me about my content. I dunno why. I donât fuckinâ swear anymore. Which is a goddamned shame, because Iâm pretty damned good at swearing. Theyâre dumb asses sometimesâŠ.Kids, donât you ever repeat what I just said,â Dan wagged a finger at both of his and Philâs children.
âRepeat what?â Michael innocently asked.
âI didnât hear a thing,â Dory softly replied.
They finished their breakfasts, and hurried out the door.
âFirst things first, stay in school, eat the lunches, make friends, and no bullying,â Dan said as he white knuckled the steering wheel of their car, and tried to navigate London traffic.
âWe couldâve taken the Tube,â Michael piped up.
âDo you want to be in a cramped space and having weirdoes try to strike up a conversation with you? And wonder why the seats are so damp? My answer is âno you donâtâ,â Dan said, answering his own rhetorical question.
âWatch It Asshole! Learn How To Drive You Twat!â Dan yelled, his road rage rearing its ugly head.
âCalm down,â Phil tried to reassure his partner.
âDonât Tell Me To Fuckinâ Calm DownâŠ.â Dan retorted.
âYou know we couldâve hitched a ride with Uncle Martyn and Aunt Cornelia,â Michael interrupted again.
âTheyâre getting their flat ready for the new baby,â Phil said.
âOh yeah, I canât believe they adopted,â Dory answered.
âIâm gonna be the best uncle Ever!â Phil looked absolutely beatific, clasping his hands in front of him.
Meantime there was a Michael vs. Dory going on in the back seat.
âWatch it, Iâm gonna cream you,â Michael said through gritted teeth, as he moved his game about.
âItâs gonna be my victory!â Dory responded and she gritted her own teeth.
âWeâre neck and neck. Iâm about to toot you,â Dory said.
âDonât toot me, Iâm nearly up your butt,â Michael responded.
âPlease donât use those words,â Phil pleaded.
âItâs bad enough that we used those words before,â Dan shook his head and honked at another car that was daring to come into their lane.
âI win!â Dory raised her hands in victory.
âTomorrow you wonât be so lucky little sister,â Michael promised and punched her shoulder, in a playful way.
âOuch!â Dory punched him back.
âHey, hey, less being rough,â Phil intervened.
âAnd weâre at the school. Kiss-kiss, hug-hug. Stay in school. No being bullies, no being a smart-ass. Answer any questions the professors have for youâŠ.â Dan spouted as he unlocked the back door of the car, and the two put on their school backpacks.
âSo much for my social life,â Michael muttered.
He disliked school. He was always bored.
âI didnât know you had a social life,â Phil âinnocentlyâ said.
âWhatâs a social life?â Dan asked.
âBye kids!â Phil made the two give him a hug, and then their parents were gone.
âShit,â Michael muttered.
âDonât say that,â Dory went off to find her nerdy-geeky friends. Michael went to find his own group of friends.
Later that afternoonâŠ.
As the tweens waited for Phil to pick them up, Dory felt a bit uncomfortable, and sticky. Why? She hopped off the concrete step, and went into some bushes. Michael, who was playing video games, Â didnât even see her go.
She felt her trousers, which thank goodness, were black so they didnât show anything. She drew her fingers towards her face, and gasped. She was bleeding. She was just about to go back to waiting when their car pulled up and Phil honked the horn. She hurried out of the bushes, and slunk into the backseat. She took out her phone and messaged someone:
âText me back! Emergency! Dory.â She put her phone back in her pocket, and started answering her dadâs questions about school.
âHow was it today? Anything exciting happen?â Phil asked.
âNot really,â Michael answered.
âNo,â Dory responded, which was unusual because she was usually a lot happier about being in school.
âAre you okay Dory?â Phil asked, a worried frown on his face.
âIâm fine. I think. IâŠ.â She looked out the window not finishing her sentence.
âYouâre not coming down with anything are you? Iâll take your temperature when we get to our house,â Phil continued.
âDada,â Dory sighed, and crossed her arms.
âAlright I wonât pry anymore,â Phil promised.
Luckily when they got to the house, Dan had gotten a ride home and was waiting for them, wearing his usual black attire and his hair was in waves again.
âHi Papa,â both children gave Dan a hug, whilst Phil kissed Danâs cheek, and hugged him tightly.
âIâve got to go to my room,â Dory nearly fled the scene.
âWhatâs up with her?â Dan asked.
Their usually semi-social daughter was not acting like herself. Presently a few rapid knocks and a ringing of their doorbell sounded. Phil went to open it, and came face to face with Cornelia and Louise.
âWhereâs Dorothy Cate?â Louise asked. She had always called Dory, Dorothy Cate.
âIn her room?â Phil gave his almost sister in law and best friend a confused look after ushering them inside.
âGreat! Cornelia? You got the stuff?â Louise asked.
âRight here. Weâll see ourselves through,â Cornelia said.
âAlrightâŠ.â Philâs voice trailed off. âIâm notâŠ.Are you? Whatâs going on?â Phil trailed behind the other two most important women in his life.
Nobody would ever replace Catherine.
âItâs personal and I donât think youâd fully understand it,â Cornelia answered and lovingly pinched Philâs cheek.
âOw,â Phil rubbed his cheek still looking confused. The two knocked simultaneously on the door.
âDorothy Cate?â Louise asked.
âWeâre here Sweetie,â Corneliaâs soft voice penetrated the wooden door.
It opened a crack and a brown eye peeked out.
âAunty Nikki, Louie? Come on inside,â She opened it wider for the two women.
âWeâve got the things, and Louise promised to help me teach you,â Cornelia said, as she shut the door in Philâs face.
âWhat is going on?â Phil knocked on the door, and jiggled the knob, but it was locked.
âCome on you can tell me,â Phil pleaded.
Cornelia stuck her head out and gave Phil an epically sisterly glare. âUnless you know anything about the female body, up to and including what we have to go through every month, then Iâll let you in. Until then, go find your partner,â Cornelia pointed towards the lounge.
âIs she? Are you here because sheâŠ.sheâsâŠ.OhâŠ.Oh...Ohhhhh!!!!â Phil put two hands to his mouth and then backtracked and went into the lounge.
âWell so much for not telling him,â Louise sighed as the two turned their attention back to Dory.
âHoneyâŠ.â Cornelia wrapped her niece into a tight hug. Louise went about taking the sheets off the bed.
âWill it hurt any less as I grow up?â Dory asked through tear filled eyes.
âNo,â Louise bluntly said.
âUnless you get pregnant, and then it goes away for a while,â Louise amended.
âLike when Darcy was a baby?â Dory gulped.
âWell in a way,â Louise nodded.
âNow youâll have to do something for us. Can you get to the big bathroom? Weâve added instructions on the lid of the box,â Cornelia handed Dory a bright blue box.
âIâll try. What are these?â Dory asked, as she inspected the box.
âTampons,â the ladies said in unison.
âIâll come with you. Iâll guard the bathroom, so no pesky boy will get near you,â Cornelia said in a decisive voice.
âBesides youâve got to collect the clothes Corey,â Louise added.
âIâll need a new outfit?â Dory asked.
âYes indeed. Pick out your favorite item of clothing to wear and new pants,â Louise instructed.
âAnd a towel, youâll need a shower, or a bath if you prefer,â Cornelia said, taking her nieceâs hand and kissing the top of her head.
âCome on then. Louise have you got it from here?â Cornelia asked as she led Dory out of the door. âOf course I do. Iâll even make the others toe the line,â Louise promised. âSee that you do,â Corneliaâs parting words were almost swallowed by the closing of the door.
They were met by three silent males. All watching hers and Doryâs movements.
âWe need to talk Nikki,â Dan said, his mouth in a firm straight line.
âIn a moment. Iâm a bit busy,â Cornelia nudged Dory inside the bathroom.
Just then Louise bustled through with the linens. âOut of the way boys!â Louise barrelled right through the threesome.
âWhatâs all the fuss about?â Dan asked.
âPhilly didnât tell you?â Cornelia was guarding the door to the bathroom now, daring any of the males to approach.
âUm Auntie Nikki?â A tentative voice made Corneliaâs head swivel towards the door.
âYes my Sweet?â Cornelia answered.
âI-Is there supposed to be a string attached to this thing?â the young girlâs voice held a wobble.
âYes,â Cornelia said.
âString? Attached to what?â Dan said, as Phil nudged him excitedly and still covering his mouth.
âAnd itâs supposed to be wedged where?!â The horrified voice raised an octave.
âOH MY GOD!â Dan blurted out as he too covered his face.
âI said as much!â Phil answered Danâs unspoken thought.
âSheâs Too Young!â Dan said, and walked away.
âSheâs old enough,â Cornelia grumbled.
There were now sounds of a bath being run, and Cornelia sighed with relief when the door opened again, and a tiny hand gave her a bundle of clothes.
âYouâve got your towel, your pants, and your outfit?â Cornelia asked.
âYes,â the small voice answered again.
âThen get cleaned up and Louise and Iâll see to you properly,â
Cornelia instructed, as she went to the laundry room and met up with Louise. Once in the laundry room she spoke to Louise,
âSheâs running a bath now.â
âGood. Poor darling. I know both of those boys got pregnant, but theyâre still boys and ignorant of the ways of the period,â Louise shook her head.
âMale understanding goes so far. Even if youâre a drag queen or whatever,â Cornelia said.
âHeaven help us,â Louise looked up to the sky for help.
âWell, letâs make sure the boys are okay and theyâre not weeping into ice cream or something,â Cornelia said in  a decided voice.
The two women exited the room, and they found themselves in the kitchen. Dan and Phil were tapping away on their keyboards, and Michael was playing the âancient X-Boxâ.
âThere you see? All is right with the world,â Cornelia said.
âDo you two even have any ice cream?â Louise was pawing through the freezer.
The two men simultaneously looked up from what they were doing, and they nodded in unison.
âThatâs so creepy,â Louise humphed.
âSomething right out of âThe Shiningâ,â Cornelia added in.
âLook weâll exchange ice cream for news,â Dan wheedled.
âAnd weâll throw in the spoon and bowl for free,â Phil added.
âThat didnât make any sense,â Dan eyed Phil speculatively.
âYour daughter is going through a tough time right now. Sheâs experiencing cramps, bloating and bleedingâŠ.And if youâve not caught on by now, I give up!â Louise threw her hands into the air.
âWe know. We just wanted to see how far youâd get into your explanation before youâd give up,â Phil grinned cheekily at one of his best girl mates.
âYouâre a cheeky one arenât you?â Cornelia pinched Philâs cheek again.
Phil rolled his eyes and rubbed at it.
MeantimeâŠ.
Huddled in a corner of her room, a onesie on, Dory was contemplating life. She was shaken out of her reverie by an unsure knock on the door. Her father.
âDada?â She asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
âItâs me,â Phil answered just as quietly.
She opened the door and Phil came inside. He found her in the Totoro onesie and he hugged her tightly against him.
âHow are you feeling?â Phil asked.
âCrummy,â Dory admitted.
He lifted her chin so that she was looking directly at him. To him, she would always be two years old. But the pain in her eyes wasnât something he could just kiss away this time. As a parent even he had limits.
âWhat you must be going through, I canât imagine. But Iâm here,â Phil tried.
âI know you are,â Her voice wobbled ever so slightly.
âAnd when it happens again, weâll be prepared next time,â Phil promised, and she hugged him this time, squeezing him. Not letting him go, and she started sobbing. Usually Dory wasnât one for sobbing uncontrollably, but Phil understood.
Even though he didnât have a biological sister, Cornelia had enlightened him, and there was that one biology class heâd been forced to take.
âYou have it much harder than I do; Iâll admit that, but youâre strong. Youâve got both the Howell genes and the Lester genes,â Phil said.
âI know Daddy. I know. But it hurts so bad,â Dory said.
âOh Sweet Pea...Letâs get some tea into you, and then weâll order pizza. Any kind. Howâs that sound? And Iâll scrounge up some chocolate for you. Or at least some hot cocoa,â Phil said, taking her hand in his, as if she were a toddler again.
âSounds good. Can we have pineapple on the top? You know half pineapple half pepperoni?â Dory asked.
âYeah,â Phil said. When they entered the dining room, Dory headed for Danâs now open arms.
âPapa Bear may we order some pizza?â Dory asked. âOf course we can,â Dan easily replied. She outlined what she wanted and Dan nodded. He went to the laptop and he put his order in.
A week later:
An impromptu dance session was going on in the kitchen. The laptop was blaring McFlyâs âLove Is Easyâ.
âIf this is love, then love completes meâŠ.â Dan stood at the cooker and he hummed under his breath, as his whole body swayed.
âItâs so simple, feels so natural to me,â Phil sang, as he tossed the spices at Dan who, miraculously, caught them in mid air, and added the spices to the skillet.
âIf this is love, love, love, itâs the easiest thing to do,â Phil continued and squeezed Danâs shoulder.
âCareful Philly, itâs hot!â Dan smiled up at Phil, who neatly dodged the spatula.
âA simple equation, and no complication to leave me confused,â Dan picked up the song. They sang it in bits and pieces, their smiles getting bigger and bigger, and then Phil took Danâs hand and they danced about the kitchen.
âToday Iâm laughinâ the clouds away,â Dan started.
âI hear what the flowers say, and drink every drop of rain,â Phil continued.
âMy side of the grass is green,â Dan grinned, and then he took Phil by the waist and pulled him closer. They were starting to kiss, when the teens walked in.
âGet a room!â Michael started.
âActually we have several rooms. Some of which havenât been christened in a while,â Dan wryly answered, looking over Philâs shoulder.
âStop kissing?â Michael asked.
âNever,â Dan retorted.
âWeâll just let you two get on with it,â Dory pulled Michael out of the kitchen.
âI am so turned on right now,â Dan whispered in Philâs ear.
âForget dinner?â Phil asked.
âFor us. But we have two responsibilities,â Dan wavered.
âTheyâre thirteen. They can fend for themselves,â Phil suggested and raised an eyebrow.
âWhat the hellâŠâ Dan turned off the cooker and yelled down the hall,
âFEND FOR YOURSELVES!!!! And Do Not Come Find Me Or Your Dad, At Least Not For A While!â
âCâmon Daniel,â Phil dragged Dan to their master bedroom.
âAfter all, I am a bottom,â Dan said.
âNo youâre not, thatâs something you fabricated one night, and you were slightly intoxicated,â Phil replied, as he opened the door, and pulled Dan inside.
âGod, Iâve missed you,â Dan said.
âIâve been sleeping with you for fifteen years, you nutter,â Phil said, as they started kissing again.
âShut Up!â Dan said, and they started to take each othersâ clothes off, and then Dan guided Phil to their bed, as they tripped over air, they refused to stop their makeout session.
âYouâre so hot!â Phil breathed.
âDid I say you could talk?â Dan asked.
âNope,â Phil acknowledged.
âThen do as youâre told for once!â Dan was mock exasperated.
âYes your majesty,â Phil grinned up at him. They started kissing with fervor.
Meantime in Doryâs room:
âTheyâre so gross!â Michael was cross legged on the ground face in his palm, arm on his leg.
âIt shows theyâve got a healthy relationship,â Dory said, as she turned on her laptop and perused Facebook. Adrian, who had come out of hiding and had a few followers of his own was almost always online. Much to Danâs chagrin, for Dan was very protective of his side of the family.
Philâs side didnât mind.
In fact, Martyn and Cornelia were thrilled to have followers as well. Even, nowadays, Catherine shared recipes on her Facebook account. Dory went to Skype.
Adrian was on, and she rang him via video. Â âHey Squirts,â Adrian waved at the camera.
âHey Uncle Adrian,â Dory greeted.
âHi Uncle Adrian,â Michael also greeted.
âSo what are you two up to?â Adrian asked, as he took a sip of water.
âNothing much. Weâre in sort of lock down,â Michael said.
âWhat? Why?â Adrian asked.
âOur dadsâŠ.â Doryâs voice trailed off.
âOh. Ugh! I donât want that image in my head!â Adrian made a disgusted face.
âWithout them thereâd be no us,â Dory smiled.
âThatâs just not something I want to think about my brother doing,â Adrian wrinkled his nose some more.
âSame,â Michael nodded.
âSo besides escaping your parents, whatâs been going on?â Adrian asked, as he leaned forward to better conversate with his niece and nephew.
âOh nothing much. Just canât wait until Iâm old enough to leave,â Michael shrugged.
âHeâs being modest! Dad and Papa put him in a gifted class. Heâs less bored there,â Dory chimed in.
âDorothy!â Michael said, and blushed.
âWell if you arenât going to tell him I am,â Dory crossed her arms, and looked like Phil for just a moment.
âSheâs told you,â Adrian laughed.
âShe tells me off all the time,â Michael grumped.
Dory rolled her eyes.
She was usually the more talkative of the two.
\
Most of the time. Michael was more withdrawn, he would talk, and he wouldnât totally abandon his friends and make them talk. He was more of the silent observant type until he got to know a person, and then he would talk. A bit.
âI just canât believe at their age theyâre still âgoing at itâ,â Michael said. âWhen itâs true love, it canât be stopped,â Adrian shrugged.
âLike you and Matilda?â Dory asked. âExactly! Sheâs a great woman, and frankly, Iâd most probably be lost without her,â Adrian shrugged. The trio talked for a long while.
A few weeks later:
âBLURGH!â Dan was in the bathroom again.
âThereâs nothing left to sick up,â Phil was at his side, and he caught a side glare from Dan.
âDonât you think I know that by now? Iâve been dry heaving for hours. This is ridiculous,â Dan huffed, and back down his head went.
âIf youâd just take another test, Iâm pretty sure itâd be solved,â Phil wheedled.
âIf you donât want a smack round the head, I suggest you finish whatever youâre doing and leave. And wake up Dory and Michael,â Dan said.
âBesides itâs just the flu,â he tried to convince himself.
âItâs not the flu,â Phil said, though he was gone to check on the kids.
He roused them, and went back to his and Danâs adjoining bathroom.
âSo did you take it yet? I left it on the counter,â Phil was leaned up against the door front, his feet crossed and his arms crossed, looking quite sternly at his life partner.
Dan was sat on top of the toiletâs seat. âYes,â Dan softly answered.
âWhat? I canât hear you,â Phil smiled.
âI said yes,â Dan said, and he looked up with a troubled expression.
âAnd?â Phil dodged and caught the test that Dan grumpily threw at him. He gave a half-smile and looked back at Dan.
âDo you want to keep it?â Phil asked. Dan bit his lip, and looked back down at his hands.
âWeâve got two teens,â Dan started.
âYeah and theyâre old enough to help us out,â Phil argued for keeping the baby.
âBut two teens are already eating us out of house and home,â Dan started again.
âThey donât eat that much,â Phil argued again.
âThey eat enough,â Dan said. âDaniel, and Iâm only gonna call you this once, Sweetheart, remember weâve got money. Weâve invested. Weâve been clever with our savings. Weâre not running out. We can afford three kids. If you want to that is. She, er I mean, it, this tiny person will be loved by all. Not just by me, but Iâm pretty sure by everyone,â Phil determinedly said.
âSpoiled rotten most likely,â Dan was softening.
âItâs been ages since weâve had a little one about the house, and perk, itâll only be one this time. Not two,â Phil pointed out.
âThatâll be nice. Two were justâŠâ Dan heaved a sigh, which retracted his stomach and he gasped for air.
Phil steadied him and guided him to the bedroom.
âIâll be the most supportive partner I can be,â Phil said.
âI know you will. Itâs justâŠâ Dan put on his thinking face.
âItâs been a long while, possibly since you were twenty-five, that youâve had an existential crisis; I wouldnât blame you if one happened now. Take all the time you need, Iâll talk to Doctor Taran and make an appointment,â Phil outlined, and kissed Danâs temple.
âOkay,â Dan whispered.
\
âIt wonât be so bad,â Phil said, as he pulled out his mobile.
âHaving kids is actually sort of rewarding in the long run,â Dan amended.
âTheyâre not eighteen yet,â Phil smiled.
âThatâs true. When they do turn eighteen weâll throw a big party,â Dan said.
âAfter naptime,â Phil answered.
âRight, because of the little one,â Dan put a protective hand over his stomach.
Phil followed suit, and kissed his significant otherâs hand.
âItâll be fine. You should know by now that I wonât leave you in the lurch. Youâre stuck with me,â Phil said, as Dan gave him a grateful smile.
He arranged for an âemergency sonogramâ, and found his way back to Dan.
âHow dâyou feel now?â Phil asked.
âA bit better I reckon,â Dan answered and slid closer next to Phil. Phil wrapped his arms around Dan, and put his head on the crook of Danâs neck, between where the shoulder blade met the head.
âItâll be fine,â Phil reassured again.
âHow are we gonna tell Dory and Michael?â Dan asked.
âThe same way we do with every big event that happens in our lives. An open and frank family meeting,â Phil answered.
âThen weâd better do it right now, before I need to go back into that room adjoining ours, and make a right mess of things,â Dan said.
âWot; now?â Phil asked, as his Northern accent escaped.
âYeah. Now,â Dan gave him raised eyebrows, which meant he meant business.
âAlright then,â Phil then went to find the kids. Dan was pacing, thinking about the supposed future outcome. They were almost in their forties, and by the time the kid reached eighteen, theyâd be fifty-eight, and fifty-four respectively.
Once the teens arrived Dan and Phil motioned for the two to sit. âMake yourselves comfortable,â Dan started and paced about the room.
âWe have some big news,â Dan continued.
âThis is it,â Michael mumbled.
âYouâre getting a divorce?â Dory put her hands over her mouth.
âWeâre not even legally married,â Dan stopped his pacing.
âAnd besides Iâd kick his butt if he tried to leave me,â Phil put in, a smirk on his face.
âItâs not official, and not yet confirmedâŠ.But, we think thereâs going to be another addition to the household,â Dan started.
âI think itâll be great,â Phil was all smiles.
âSays the one whoâs not carrying this time,â Dan huffed at him.
âBut we wonât know until tomorrow, with Doctor Taran,â Phil added.
âGreat talk. Go do whatever it was you were doing before you got called in here,â Dan shooed them out.
âIf you have any questionsâŠ.â Phil started, but the two were already out the door.
âI have a valid question, how the hell did we end up getting pregnant not once but three times?â Dan raised an ironic hand.
âLucky,â Phil said.
âI donât feel lucky. I feel like the universeâs out to get me,â Dan said. âItâs out to get us both,â Phil affirmed. âMoreso me than you,â Dan said.
The Next Day...Sonogram Time:
âYou know the drill, get up onto the table,â Doctor Taran directed with her pencil in one hand and her clipboard in the other. Besides having grown older by thirteen years, she was still the same. Same sensible bun, same scrubs.
She was just used to the men before her, by now.
âSo whatâs the gender this time?â She looked at Phil for confirmation.
âIâm not telling,â Phil held up his hands in a self defence motion.
âAlright then, Daniel, lift up your shirt,â Doctor Taran directed. Dan sighed, rolled his eyes and did as he was told.
âWow! Whatever sort of power you wield, I want it,â Phil cracked.
âSit down beside him you nutter,â Doctor Taran rolled her eyes.
âSheâs told you,â Dan put in.
âShut it you,â Doctor Taran spread the goop, and then the screen came to life.
âOh there we go. You were right,â Doctor Taran nodded and jotted something down on her clipboard.
âThird timeâs the charm?â Phil guessed.
âWhat? Youâre saying our older two arenât valid human beings?â Dan groused.
âHey Mr. Grumpy, I didnât say anything of the kind,â Phil countered.
âOh look at you. Always with the domestic arguments,â Doctor Taran nodded.
âLook at her! Even as a blob sheâs a cutie,â Phil breathed out, as he put both of his hands to his mouth, palms open.
âSpoilers!!â Dan complained.
âIâm sorry! I have this inane gift that I automatically know the genders. Itâs not my fault!â Phil answered.
âIt is. You know how I am about spoilers. I thought for once that I could be surprised,â Dan frowned.
âI mean, I said âsheâ, I was probably assigning genders again. That was my fault,â Phil backtracked.
âThatâs a bit better,â Dan acquiesced, and they kissed quickly.
âYou twoâŠ.Daniel wipe yourself off, and get the heck out of my office. Go on. Shoo!â Doctor Taran broke up their little tiny argument.
The guys did as they were told. They took the Tube back home, and once at their place, they decided to have another family meeting.
In the Family Meeting and afterwards:
âYes weâre having another kid. But youâre not going to know the gender, your dad knows; but heâs sworn to secrecy,â Dan said, and looked Phil up and down with squinted eyes, and a âVâ going from his eyes to Phil and back again.
âMy lips are sealed. No amount of torture will ever get me to reveal it. Not even tickling!â Phil declared.
âAnother kid. Thatâs just great, thatâs all we need around here,â Michael murmured, his arms crossed.
âI think itâll be nice. Iâll be an older sister. I can mold their mind, and teach them the ways of being a younger sibling,â Dory breathed out. Phil clapped her on the back.
âParentsâ pet,â Michael said.
âWell now that thatâs out of the wayâŠ. You two go and do your homework,â Phil prompted.
âLet your papa rest,â Phil continued. Dan was looking as pale as Phil with a hint of green around the edges.
âI do feel a bit funny,â Dan put a hand to his mouth.
âAlright to the bathroom you go,â Phil said, as the kids left the room.
Dan just waved him off as he disappeared back to the porcelain shrine. Phil followed and knelt beside him.
âIâd pull back your hair, but thatâs a futile effortâŠâ Phil decided to sit on the bathtub instead, becoming moral support. Dan raised a certain finger in the air, aimed at his significant other.
âThank you,â Phil said in an unfazed tone.
âAsshole,â Dan muttered, as he finally stood and wiped his mouth off with a piece of toilet roll.
He also proceeded to brush his teeth, and popped in a mint.
âUgh! How could you stand the morning sickness with Dory? I feel woozy, and my stomach is swirling aboutâŠ.â Dan managed to make it back to the bed, and was lying on his side.
âI dealt with it, and had to remind myself who I was carrying. Some days I had to remind myself that I loved her very much,â Phil responded, lying on his own side and facing Dan; his hands under one cheek, and smiling encouragingly at him.
âI know about morning sickness. So Iâll help you in any way I can,â Phil said.
Two months later:
âTwo and a half months, and Iâm still not showing. Whereâs my pudge?â Dan poked at his stomach.
âSome babies develop differently. Donât poke too much, youâll give yourself a stomachache,â Phil said, handing Dan some ginger ale.
âThanks,â Dan sipped it from a straw.
âWant some savoury biscuits?â Phil asked.
âDâyou know that in America theyâre called âcrackersâ?â Dan bit off a corner.
âI did not know that,â Phil looked thoughtful.
âWell now you do. Are we doing solo videos this week or together ones?â Dan asked, his hands poised above the keyboard, he was in his usual crease, hunched over the laptop ever so slightly. So what if everything was holograms now? Sometimes laptops were the best pieces of equipment.
Try and drag him out of the early to later â00s so quickly. Let him have his habits.
âPretty soon youâll have something to rest your ancient laptop on. Just be thankful that we havenât announced our newest bundle of joy yet,â Phil said.
âThen thereâd be questions, haters, and people who are so creepy that you just want to crawl under the covers and hide,â Dan mused again, as he started typing.
âSolo ones, but then at the end of the week, weâll collaborate as usual. They want to see Dory and Michael,â Phil nodded, as he leaned over and kissed Danâs cheek.
âAlright then. Whoâs first? Â Weâve still got the one recording camera. Why donât we just splurge for a new one?â Dan asked.
âBecause theyâre becoming rare and expensive,â Phil was all about being frugal. Eight pounds was too much for him to spend, while Dan had sort of expensive tastes.
Top Man was his favorite online store.
âItâs Thursday. I said Iâd do one on Sunday, but Dory had her dance recital,â Phil said.
âAnd of course Michael is in drama class. Do you have a feeling theyâre pretty much the carbon copies of us when we were younger?â Dan asked.
âIn Michael? Yeah. But I envy Doryâs grace when she dances. I look like a hunchback when I dance, and I make weird faces,â Phil sighed and shrugged.
âLetâs just get the announcement out of the way,â Dan suggested.
âLook whoâs the non-procrastinator now,â Phil smiled indulgently at Dan.
âYeah-yeah,â Dan waved him off.
âWant to do it now?â Phil asked.
âLetâs wait a couple of weeks. I want to see if the baby will get longer. I want to wait until Iâm showing just a bit,â Dan decided.
âAlright whatever you want. Iâm going to go record. Need any snacks whilst Iâm up?â Phil asked, shifting his weight from one foot to the other.
âIâve got savories, Iâve got ginger ale. Iâm fine. Leave the bottle out. Iâll probably pour some more into the glass,â Dan answered.
âOkay,â Phil nodded and he went out of the room. They still did private videos. Except they stayed out of their room until the other was finished. Even Michael and Dory knew not to interrupt. âHey Guys!â Phil waved excitedly at the camera.
Two and a half weeks later:
âThere we go, itâs a tiny pocketâŠ.I feel feetâŠ.OMG! Iâm going to cry,â Dan said, and wiped a tear from his eye.
âWell it looks as if theyâre finally longer. Ready for the big A?â Phil asked.
âBig A? Are you talking about my ass?â Dan looked behind him as far as he could.
âThe big Announcement,â Phil said in an excited tone, he was practically jumping up and down on the sofa cushion.
âAs ready as Iâll ever be,â Dan sighed.
âHere we goâŠ.â Phil turned on YouNow. They both took a deep breath.
âHey Guys! Hello,â Dan and Phil said at the same time.
âIf you havenât read the title, then youâll be pleased to know we haveâŠ.Drum roll pleaseâŠ.Good News!â Phil said, as he put his fists to his mouth smiling broadly.
âMichael and Dory already know,â Dan answered.
âThe reason theyâre not here is because theyâre still in school,â Phil answered a question.
âSo weâve got baby number three on the way,â Dan plunged right in.
âWay to take the surprise right out of it. I was going to tease them for a bit,â Phil pouted.
âWe can do that for the next surprise, tease the hell out of them,â Dan answered, patting Philâs knee.
âPhilâs the only one who knows the gender, but heâs under strict orders not to give it up. On Pain of Death!â Dan glared over at Phil, who held up his hands in a surrender gesture.
âMy lips are sealed. Until sh...the babyâs born!â Phil squeaked out.
Dan reached over and slapped his shoulder. Hard. âI told you to shut up,â Dan said in a semi-joking way.
âAlright. Alright. Moving on. Top fan isâŠ.â Phil read the top fans off. âYou win a gold sticker. You win a puppyâŠ.You win mismatched socksâŠ.â Phil was giving out weird gifts again.
âAn octopus,â Dan decided.
âOh good one!â Phil smiled.
An hour laterâŠ. âWell guys we have to feed Michael and Dory. See you later!â Dan said.
âBye Guys!â Phil said, covering the camera with his hands. They signed out.
âOh godâŠ.Iâm breathlessâŠ.Whew!â Dan breathed out.
âToo much? I knew we shouldnât have stressed you out,â Phil worried.
âIâm okay Phil. Itâs just nerve wracking as usual, but adding the pregnancy into the mix makes it doubly hard,â Dan tried to sound reassuring.
âAnyway weâve done it, you rest up. Iâll go putter for a bit,â Phil decided.
âOkay,â Dan went to the bedroom.
Thatâs how Phil knew he wasnât feeling well when he was submissive.
âI hope the little one doesnât come too early. We donât need stress right now,â Phil said under his breath. He made dinner, fed Michael and Dory, and then he brought in a plate for Dan.
A few weeks later another doctorâs appointment:
âWell the babyâs developing normally. Heartbeatâs regular, and any new developments?â Doctor Taran looked down at her clipboard, seeming to tick off boxes.
âIâve got massive morning sickness. Itâs moved to the afternoon,â Dan frowned.
âThatâs normal,â Doctor Taran nodded.
âI had it last time, now itâs his turn,â Phil nearly gloated.
âDonât gloat,â Doctor Taran and Dan said at the same time.
âAlright, things are good to go,â Doctor Taran decided, and handed Dan some tissues.
âGo on then. Get out of my sight,â Doctor Taran shooed them out.
âAny hint on gender?â Doctor Taran whispered to Phil. Phil rolled his eyes.
âIâll hit him if he tells,â Dan said.
âWhy do you always seem to be able to hear my private convos with Doctor Taran?â Phil cheekily asked.
âBecause Iâm a nosey twit,â Dan replied, as he pulled on his âNarutoâ jacket. Phil rolled his eyes and they drove home.
Third month:
âIf I puke any more, Iâll go insane,â Dan said.
âIâm worried. You should be over it by now,â Phil said.
âWell, youâre the one who said that, âbabies develop differentlyâ. What if  Iâm carrying the devilâs spawn and itâs all your fault?â Dan questioned. He questioned everything in life.
âWhy would the devil impregnate you? Youâre a lowly YouTuber,â Phil tried to lighten the mood, and ended up ducking the shower gel that flew at his head.
âIâm pretty sure you made a midnight deal with Satan,â Dan said.
âThat was ages ago!â Phil protested, as he put the shower gel out of reach.
âDamn you and your rituals,â Dan said, as he made his way to the sink and brushed his teeth.
âSorry, Iâve learnt my lesson,â Phil said.
âI hope to whatever, that Iâm over this soon. Have you made any headway on the nursery? Weâre keeping it yellow, but I want it changed up a bit. And it needs to be repainted,â Dan outlined his plan for the space.
âIâll repaint it later this week, you can supervise,â Phil promised.
âI like supervising. Do we need to build the wardrobe?â Dan asked.
âNo, Iâm not letting you near a wardrobe, youâd probably, sick up something on it,â Phil said.
Dan gave him a hard glare. âIâm not a delicate fainting maiden,â Dan said, quoting something from one of their gaming videos.
âI didnât say you were. I just donât think you should move about too much until youâre past the morning sickness stage. If you ever get past it. Some people never get past that stagâŠ.â He was interrupted by a hand over his mouth.
âYeah. Thank you, Iâm pretty sure Iâll get past it at some point,â Dan said, as Phil mumbled against his hand.
Dan removed the hand, and they resumed their ideas on the space.
âYou know Doctor Taran says thereâs a procedure that will stop us from having kids,â Phil ventured.
âI know. But itâs risky,â Dan said.
âSheâs performed it before,â Phil said.
âAs much as I trust her, and I do trust herâŠ.I donât know,â Dan said.
âBecause maybe this is the end, and maybe our bodies will just know and shut âitâ off?â Phil ventured again.
âLet me think about it. You know Iâll have to be cut open again. Although the scars are fabulous, and worth it, I just donât want to have to keep getting cut open. But for now, let us get through thisâŠ.â Dan gestured.
Month 4:
âFinally I can eat toast again,â Dan had found a nice recipe for French Toast, and though Phil didnât really like the egg mixture, he had added the cinnamon into it for a âdash of flavourâ, he had to admit that french toast wasnât so bad.
âSyrup or that fancy sugar, not the granulated kind but the other kind,â Dan said, as he finished.
âYeah, itâs a filling breakfast,â Phil conceded.
âIsnât though? The berries top it off just so,â Dan said.
âDefinitely,â Phil replied. The teens werenât awake just yet, as it was Saturday and they were allowed to sleep in.
âYou know we havenât played Sims-4 in a while,â Phil commented.
âRight, and since Dilâs had the baby, its mystical powers have been unequalled,â Dan answered.
âWell Evan and Dab bonded over it,â Phil said.
âAnd I think it gave them a wealth of knowledge,â Dan said.
âWell Dab stopped needing to do homework. Glad you convinced me to keep it,â Phil smiled.
âLike you convinced me with this one?â Dan indicated with an eyebrow raise.
âI did no such thing,â Phil looked mock offended.
âAnyway, to answer your weird train of thought, weâll play Sims4,â Dan said. âYay,â Phil grinned.
Video wrapped and in the midst of being edited:
âLooking back on the saga of Dil, Tabs, Dab, and the Pancakes, this has been a pretty fun series.
âNobodyâs died, alien abductions have been  a rare occurrence. Dilâs still a bit of a flop sometimes,â Phil nodded.
âAnd weâre still getting enjoyment out of being, âmasters of a universe,â Dan replied.
âI mean raising kids is like raising Sims,â Phil nodded.
âSaid nobody ever,â Dan retorted.
âThink about it for a minute, follow my train of thought. They have their own languages, their own way to dress, theyâre sentient yes, but we have to guide them through their lives. And when theyâre old enough, we send them off to University and hope for the best, but they always come back home. At least for a visit. And they fall in love, they get married, and the cycle of life continues,â Phil started.
âYou thought really long and hard about this statement didnât you?â Dan raised an eyebrow at Phil.
âI guess so. But thatâs just how my brain works,â Phil lightly responded.
âYouâve got a strange mind my friend,â Dan said.
âIn a way so do you,â Phil was unapologetic.
âBeing around you has made me extra weird,â Dan shrugged.
âAnd?â Phil asked.
âThereâs nothing to add,â Dan said. Phil pursed his lips and shook his head, then it was fully silent, as they slow kissed each other, and held onto each other. Then the teens showed up from schoolâŠ.
Month 5:
âOof!â Dan righted himself as he hobbled towards the adjoining bathroom.
âBaby, youâd better be worth it,â Dan muttered to himself. Â
âThis kicking me in the bladder isnât gonna go any easier on me for the next four months is it?â Dan asked, as he did what he was supposed to do, and his stomach started rumbling.
âGreat, more bladder hockey, and now you want me to feed you? I reckon,â Dan mumbled.
He sauntered out into the kitchen.
âFuck,â Dan hissed under his breath.
It was only nine in the morning. Not even Phil was awake this early. Usually they met in the kitchen around midday, except when it was a school day. Which it was not.
âItâs not even a school day,â Dan sighed, but he adhered to the rumblings and went in for some cereal.
âI actually have some cereal?â Dan peered into the box.
âI made me some toast and orange marmalade. I think. I dreamt I made it. I mightâve made it earlier then dreamt that I made it again. I donât know, I wasnât nearly awake this morning,â Phil tripped into the kitchen and poured some coffee into his mug.
âWhat time?â Dan asked, as he swallowed another spoonful of cereal.
âI think it was four,â Phil replied. âHuh. Okay. Your brainâs weird,â Dan said. Â âJust like the rest of me,â Phil conceded. Dan finished his bowl, and he padded to the lounge. Time for some social media.
Month six:
âTime is...Ticking away, tick tick ticking awayâŠ.â Dan hummed under his breath; he was resting his laptop on his protruding stomach and trying to read the screen.
âIf this is love love love,â another voice said from beside him.
âThatâs not even the same song,â Dan huffed out.
âI think it goes well,â Phil said, and put a hand on Danâs stomach.
âDonât! Youâll upset it,â Dan said.
âWhatâll I upset? The baby or the laptop?â His boyfriend looked genuinely confused.
âYes,â Dan said.
âOh,â Phil put his hand on Danâs knee.
âThank you, important business,â Dan said, and settled against the mountain of pillows behind him.
âStomachâs rumbling. What time is it?â Dan looked at his laptopâs screen again.
âOne forty-five,â he nodded.
âFood time?â Phil was sat up again.
âFood time,â Dan answered.
âIâll get one of the slavesâŠ.er one of the kids to whip something up,â Phil said.
âOr ask them,â Dan suggested
. âAlright then,â Phil said, and exited the room. In an hour and a half, Dan was feasting on sandwiches, crisps, and some Ribena, and water.
âGotta stay hydrated,â Three voices said as they presented him with the sumptuous array of food. Dan looked at his little family.
Times like these, he was actually happy to have them all milling about. He was happy that Michael and Dory were becoming well adjusted adults, and curious about his and Philâs âfamily businessâ. Michael especially seemed keen on learning about editing and making videos. Dory seemed to be a more of  the âbehind the scenesâ person, but was also learning how to make quality video content and editing whenever necessary.
âThanks,â Dan addressed the family and took a few bites.
They left him to it. He opened his laptop and perused the media.
âWeâre lucky,â Dan said more to himself and the duvet then to anything outside of those perimeters.
âYeah we are pretty lucky,â the bed dipped as Phil sat on the foot of it.
âHowâd you hear me?â Dan asked.
âIâm stealthy. Like a ninja,â Phil said.
âOh yeah. Totally like a ninja, you surprise your enemies, and scare the hell out of your ânearly-husbandâ and children,â Dan retorted.
âThis oneâs going to be our last,â Dan continued in a decisive tone.
âDoes that mean surgery for the both of us? Doctor Taran said it was a risky procedure,â Phil looked worried behind his glasses.
He had forgotten to get more contacts, plus he was due for an eye exam anyway. So he just whacked on his glasses. To be honest he looked hellâa cute in his glasses. Dan licked his lips and pushed the laptop slightly out of the way.
âWe havenât had proper sex in a while, and Iâm feeling, well Iâve got that feeling,â Dan tried to sound sensual and ended up sounding like a Grade A flop.
âHormones,â Phil tried to look annoyed as he looked up at the ceiling.
âDamn right. Take your glasses off, lock the door, and letâs make the bed all messyâŠ.I wanna do itâŠ.Sims style,â Dan answered.
âIf I take my glasses off first, Iâll be too blind to see the lock on the door,â Phil said, but he had gotten off the bed, and locked it.
âNo interruptions,â Phil said.
âGood. Get your ass over here,â Dan had deposited the laptop a safe distance away.
Phil fell on top of Dan and the two feverishly made out, the clothes mysteriously disappeared, and soon, the duvet was moved down all the way to the foot of the bed. Phil had put his glasses on top of the laptop, so they wouldnât get crushed.
âGod I love you,â Dan breathed out.
âI love you too,â Phil wrapped his arms around Danâs body, admiring the bump.
âYouâre just the right amount,â Dan breathed out again.
âWhatever that meansâŠ.â Philâs voice trailed off.
âShut up,â Dan ordered. And so it happenedâŠ.
AfterwardsâŠ.
Both were wrapped in a tight embrace, quite moist, but neither were complaining about it.
Though they couldnât get too close, but it was fine. They had explored every inch of their bodies. Each admiring every scar, every new bruise, every cut that had happened. The romance was still certainly alive, underneath the bantering, the pseudo arguing, and the few times theyâd actually gotten angry or tired of each other. As it happened, even âlong datingâ couples needed their space.
But it was a rare occurrence for them. They barely argued, and when they did it wasnât for very long. Theyâd always end up Skyping, or Facetiming. They were never far apart. Had never been. Ever since Dan had confessed, and Phil had been shocked, but he too had admitted to it. They had made sure that they were ready. They hadnât rushed into it.
Being best friends first, theyâd had to plan everything out. And itâd worked.
âTwenty-one years, youâd think weâd get tired of having this,â Phil muttered.
âYouâd think so, but every time we do this, I find something new and exciting,â Dan answered, kissing the little dip in Philâs neck.
Phil gave him a half smile and pushed Danâs curls back.
âSame,â Phil simply answered.
âStop playing with the hair, itâs too moist,â Dan shook his head, and a few beads of moisture landed on Philâs neck. Phil made a face and took a tissue from the bedside table and wiped his neck off.
âSorry,â Dan said, and kissed Philâs nape.
Phil returned the favour, nibbling on Danâs earlobe. They went back to just making out.
The baby decided at this moment to give a gentle kick, when they had no distance between them.
âOhhh, the baby wants us to acknowledge its presence,â Phil said, and put a soft hand on Danâs stomach.
âJealous little twat,â Dan smiled, and also looked at his stomach, slowly they made eye contact with each other.
âSpoiled is the word I think youâre looking for,â Phil corrected.
âAnd loved. Exceptionally loved. I have a feeling that Dory and Michael will be the surrogate parents, especially Dory, I have a feeling sheâll take on the âmumâ role. I mean I wonât assign her to it. I donât know. I justâŠ.Have this feeling. You know?â Dan said.
âI always know what youâre saying, or trying to say,â Phil nodded, and smiled, as they both looked deeply into each otherâs eyes.
Month 7:
âUGH!â Dan flopped his head back onto the pillows mounted behind his back and head. He gritted his teeth. âI canât Move!â He pushed himself up onto his elbows and tried to maneuver a bit.
âHeh, hah, eeeâŠ.Nope! Phil?â Dan reached over and shook Philâs shoulder.
âWhat is it?â Phil asked.
âI need to move, and I canât,â Dan said.
âWhy do you want to move?â Phil sleepily asked.
âBecause I need to wee,â Dan said, and punched Philâs shoulder to wake him up some more.
âOh,â Phil stood and then went to Danâs side of the of the bed and held out his hand, which Dan took and they headed to the loo.
âHow many more months? Sixteen?â Dan groused.
âTwo,â Phil yawned.
âOnly two? I feel like Iâve been pregnant for twelve years,â Dan sighed, and then he looked at his joggers and back at Phil.
âWell?â Dan said.
âOh! Iâm sorry,â Phil helped Dan remove his trousers.
âThank you,â Dan said, and Phil turned his back, and waited.
A few hours laterâŠ.
âSHIT! FUCK! DAMN! PHIIILLLLL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!â Dan called out.
âWHAT?! Iâm in the same room as you. Maybe I should get you a bell to ring,â Phil mused, as he walked over to Danâs side of the bed.
âA bell? Youâd really let me ring a bell?â Dan looked pleased with the prospect.
âHell no,â Phil wrinkled his nose.
âFine, I need to wee again, and then you can help me into my Browsing Position,â Dan emphasised the last two words.
âOf course âWinnieâ,â Phil said, and they went towards the loo again.
âOne day I wonât be so fat,â Dan said.
âYouâre not fat. Youâre carrying a kid. Thereâs a big difference,â Phil said, and rubbed Danâs shoulder.
âHelp me?â Dan asked, and he sounded plaintive, almost younger.
âYouâre slipping back into your eighteen year old voice.
âWell Iâm sorry, itâs been thirteen and a half years since I was pregnant. Itâs hard,â Dan muttered.
âI know, and itâs hard seeing you like this. But trust me, the end result is well worth it,â Phil tried to soothe.
âShut up,â Dan sighed.
âSorry Babe,â Phil said, and turned his back for Dan to have privacy.
âShit, I canât even stand,â Dan squatted.
âEw,â Phil said. âNo comments from the peanut gallery,â Dan ordered.
âSorry,â Phil sighed, and he zipped his lips. Finally they climbed back into bed.
ThenâŠ.
âWeâre Late! Open Up!â There was frantic knocking on the door.
âShit!â Dan yelped.
âOMG!â Phil covered his mouth with his palms. âShoot, shoot, shoot, Iâm coming, Iâm cominâŠ.OUCH!â Phil tripped over trying to put on his jeans.
âAre you okay?!â Dan said.
âIâm fineâŠ.Iâm almost ready!â Phil answered Danâs question, and tried to appease the two teens outside their door.
âOkay, get me the keys and weâre off,â Phil said to the door again.
He leaned over and kissed Dan, and then the baby bump.
âIâll be back in a bit!â Phil called over his shoulder and then he was gone. Dan sighed and reached for the laptop that was always in reach.
He opened it up to Word, and typed: âI Can Not Wait For This Kid To Come Out!â
Month 8:
âIâm a blimp! I waddle! I hate LIFE!â Dan gritted his teeth and tried to stand up away from the sofa, he wobbled, and then futilely grasped for the sofa arm, and fell to his knees. âPHILIP MICHAEL LESTERRRR!!!!â
âDaniel James Howell, almost Lester!! I told you to Stay Put! Which part didnât you understand? I said Iâd make a light lunch, and then come back and get you,â Phil sighed, and pulled Dan up with minimal effort.
âOw! For fuckâs sake,â Dan muttered.
âStop mumbling,â Phil implored, and ducked a slap to his head.
âHey now!â Phil gently led him to the dining room.
âI am not weak!â Dan gritted out.
âOf course youâre not weak. Youâre the strongest human being I know,â Phil soothed.
âI will so crack this pepper pot over your hench head!â Dan gritted his teeth.
âYou wouldnât dare!â Phil wryly said.
âTry me,â Dan answered in kind and picked up the pepper pot.
âHey!â Phil put up a palm in surrender.
âOkay, Okay, I wonât rescue you anymore. You just try and stand by yourself. You try and go to the loo solo. Iâm just going to stand idly by and raise our teens by myself,â Phil cracked.
âJust because Iâm bigger than London itself does not mean you can make me feel bad about being an absentee parent. Iâm incubating life here!â Dan put down the pot, and pointed at his protruding stomach.
âNinny,â Phil said.
âIâm not even going to acknowledge what you just said about me,â Dan said.
âWell hereâs lunch. Enjoy,â Phil tried to make an effort.
âHow many more months?â Dan asked.
âOne and a half, give or take a few weeks,â Phil was starting to have flashbacks to when he was pregnant with Dory and she was overdue by a month and a half.
âI just hope you go into labour on your due date and arenât late,â Phil muttered.
âI hope so too,â Dan answered, and patted Philâs hand encouragingly.
âYouâre a nutter,â Phil said.
âI know, but you kinda made me this way,â Dan answered.
âYouâre also my number one stalker,â Phil said.
âI am Number One Phil Trash !â Dan said, and put a pointer finger to the air.
âYouâre incorrigible. Itâs a good job youâre cute,â Phil said.
âIâm handsome. Youâre the cute one,â Dan answered.
âActually Iâm still the âball of sunshineâ,â Phil said and tucked in.
âAss,â Dan smiled.
âMmmm only to you,â Phil said.
Month 9:
Middle of the day:
Dan was puttering about the kitchen. The kids were in school, and Phil had to go to a meeting. Heâd been worried about leaving Dan, but it was an important meeting. One that had to be handled that day. âIâll be fine,â heâd said.
Phil had crinkled his brows in a worried way. âIf youâre sure? You call me the minute you go into labour,â Phil instructed, kissing him on the way out.
âIâll be fine,â Dan answered to Philâs disappearing back.
âIâm just fine. Weâre just fine; arenât we little one?â Dan asked to his stomach.
Then when heâd felt the kick, he smiled and had scrounged up something to eat. But something wasnât right. And then he felt it. He rang Philâs mobile. It went directly to voicemail.
He texted, â999â then he forcefully slammed the phone on the table and doubled over. He made his way to a chair and panted hard. This wasnât good. He tried to do some breathing exercises.
âOkay lamaze class that I went to one time, come and refresh my brain particlesâŠ.Brain particles? What the actual fuck did I just say? Whatever just refresh my memory. Breathe out and then in? Or the other way round? I donât fuckinâ know! Jesus fruckinâ poop on fookin poop shit,â He bit out.
âIâm fine! Iâm good. This is norâŠ.Mal!â Just then there were pounding footsteps and Phil was by his side.
âI cut the meeting short! Is it finally time?â Phil caught his breath as Dan feebly nodded.
âThought so. I called the ambulance, I hope they get here fast,â Philâs words rushed out in a torrent. âI hope so toooooâŠ.FUCKINâ ASSHOLE OF A STOMACH! GET ME SOMEWHERE COMFY!â Dan painfully yelled.
Phil led him to the sofa. âI called Susan and my mum,â Phil spoke softly.
âWhat for?â Dan asked.
âTo pick up Dory and Michael,â Phil answered.
âOh. Yeah,â Dan ground his teeth.
âYour dentistâs gonna be so angry at you,â Phil worried.
âForget my fuckinâ dentist!â Dan said, just as the ambulance arrived.
They arrived at the hospital in record time. This time Dan didnât mind the pain, didnât get squeamish when he was opened up like a side of beef again. He knew it would be worth it. âDo you want to know the gender now?â Doctor Taran asked.
âSure,â Dan said through hazy pain.
âLet me present your daughter,â Doctor Taran answered and laid the baby down on Danâs chest.
âCut the cord Lester,â Doctor Taran commanded.
âYep,â Phil said, and did as was required.
âSheâsâŠ.Beautiful,â Dan whispered. The baby had red and brown hair mixed, making natural highlights in her hair.
âWouldnât it be really remarkable if she had one tri-coloured eye and one brown eye? Itâs hereditary. But it only happens in the females on my side of the family,â Phil mused, as he stroked the babyâs head.
She opened her eyes and blinked up at the two men in her life.
âWelcome to the world Baby,â Dan whispered as he kissed her cheek.
She cooed and then, when she realized where she was, she let out a cry.
âOh good her lungs are working. Letâs get her cleaned up shall we?â Doctor Taran said, taking the baby.
âWeâll just stay here and hash out names,â Phil said, turning to Dan, after theyâd sewn him back up.
âIâm stuck for names,â Dan protested.
âI was thinking, and Iâve had nine plus months to think about it. Plus I saw it on a baby website, and if you agree, then I think itâd be just the name for her,â Phil said.
âWell? Go on,â Dan prodded.
âFiona Blyss. Blyss because sheâll really make us happier just by adding her little soul to the world, and doing god knows what, and Fiona. Not only for Shrek, but because itâs like a warriorâs name. If sheâd been a boy I wouldâve wanted to call her Thor Philip,â Phil answered.
âItâs fuckinâ lucky she turned out not to be a Thor. Although Iâm not against Diana for Wonder Woman,â Dan answered.
âThor Philip Lester-Howell. Think about it,â Phil said.
âWeâll call our dog Thor. If we ever get one,â Dan said.
âYay!â Phil said. Dan rolled his eyes and puckered his lips. They shared a celebratory kiss, and then the swaddled baby somehow ended up in Philâs arms whilst they rolled Dan to a recovery room.
âI love her so much,â Dan said through the drug filled haze he was now overcome with.
âWe all love her,â Phil reminded him.
âI know, butâŠ.Now my tummyâs still pudgy but empty, and I donât know what to do now,â Dan yawned.
âTry and sleep,â Phil suggested.
âMake sure she doesnât get abducted,â Dan yawned again.
âIâll defend her from everything, even malicious aliens,â Phil promised.
âThanks Phil,â Dan answered and fell asleep.
âWell Kiddo, guess itâs just you and me,â Phil said, and bounced her a bit.
âYouâre now stuck with us. For life,â Phil clarified. Fiona just blinked at him and yawned.
âI guess it has been a big day for you,â Phil conceded and put her in the plastic cot next to Dan. Phil leaned his head against the top of the chair and dozed off, until it was time to tell the birth certificate person all the details. Then they put Fionaâs footprints on the end of the certificate. And it was official. The Lester-Howell clan was complete.
A week laterâŠ.
Dan was fully recovered and had scheduled his âother surgeryâ five months ahead. He wanted to be fully healed, and besides Phil had cleared their diaries. The nurse wheeled him to the entrance of the hospital, and Phil pulled up in their van. He got out and jogged to the entrance, helping the nurse push the wheelchair. Dan was still stiff, and Phil helped him inside.
When he was buckled in, Dan looked in the rearview mirror. âThey all came?â Dan asked, as he looked at Dory who gave him a smile and blew him a kiss.
Michael, who just waved and went back to his film, and little Fiona who was sound asleep.
âSheâs been cranky,â Phil admitted.
âWe didnât really have much time to bond. It took me a few more days than last time to recover from the C-Section,â Dan answered.
âI know, but Dory and Michael have been helping out quite a lot. And you were right. Doryâs been fussing over her like a tiny mum. Itâs so cute to watch,â Phil said.
âI had an inkling,â Dan answered as they headed for home.
âAnd the bedâs been big and empty. I couldnât sleep without you, which is lucky because the babyâs been up all night too. I donât mind. She likes it when I sing random songs to her,â Phil kept the chatter up, and Dan nodded and answered at every pause.
It was nice to be going home, back to a routine. Introducing little Ona to the world. Heâd decided on her nickname.
âI was thinking of a nickname for the baby,â Dan said as Phil seemed to pause for a few breaths.
âYeah? Me too,â Phil replied.
âOn the count of threeâŠ.â Dan started.
âFi!â Phil said, just as Dan said, âOna!â
âBoth are really cool nicknames,â Phil conceded.
âWell you can call her âFiâ and Iâll call her âOnaâ,â Dan said.
âThanks Dan for not saying my name for her was stupid,â Phil said.
âCos it isnât,â Dan said, as they pulled into the driveway.
They settled the baby back into her cot, and the older ones disappeared upstairs and into the library. Dan and Phil were alone.
âInternet! How Iâve missed thee,â Dan said and hugged his laptop, just as Phil came in with his ancient device.
âOh, I see how it is. You didnât miss me at all?â Phil sat beside him, and plugged in to a socket.
They turned on the devices and soon Dan was announcing the babyâs arrival and statistics onto Twitter. Phil added in his congratulations and of course the Phandom went wild with Congratulations and happy vibes.
âWe need to do a collab, A.S.A.P,â Phil said, turning to Dan.
âI know, we will,â Dan promised. âGood,â Phil nodded in turn. There was a cry. âYouâre on âDaddy Dutyâ, â Dan winked at Phil. âThanks,â But Phil was secretly happy that he took charge.
Five years later:
Two men of nearly equal height were trying, desperately trying, to decorate a cake, while a little five year old girl with streaks of red and brown, curly, long hair, and one blue eye, and one brown eye, ran about their legs waving a wand, and wearing a sparkling jumper and equally sparkling tutu.
âGo find Thor!â Dan said, as he caught the back of the childâs jumper and her limbs flailed in the air the ribbon on the star shaped wand flitting here and there, as she giggled up at her Papa.
âOtay Mumma,â She gave him a somewhat slobbery kiss on the cheek.
âHi Daddy! She waved with a noodly hand in Philâs direction.
âMumma?â Dan asked.
âYes! Because you is Mumma, and he is Daddy,â She answered, and showed a gap-toothed smile.
âJust go get your dog, and go outside, so we can bring the cake out, you little nutter,â Dan said, and gently set the child down.
She giggled, and then hugged their legs.
âThor-Bor!â She yelled and a little beagle answered her call.
âThor-Bor!â She said, and picked the little dog up. She marched outside and joined the rest of her party.
âWhew!â Phil said as he put the last of his icing on the cake.
âAlmost. Done,â Danâs tongue peeked out and with a flourish the cake was finished.
âLetâs present the cake,â Dan said, and the two carried it out to the party table.
It was decorated quite nicely with balloons hanging on the end.
âCâmon Ona! Time to blow the candles out,â Dan said, as the little girl ran up to the table just in time.
She sat at the head of the table.
âMake a wish,â Phil encouraged. She squeezed her eyes tightly shut, and grinned big.
âFwoosh!â she blew out the candles.
She looked around her, there was Dory, and Michael, and Louise, and CorneliaâŠ.Martyn, Susan, Adrian, Catherine, Nigel and everyone else sheâd ever met. She waved with her wand.
âI, Princess Fiona Banana Fanna NiNona, grant you all to be at my Birfday Party!â She said.
âThank you Princess,â was the greeting.
âHappy Birthday Fiona,â Dory said, and blew her baby sister a kiss. Fiona giggled and âcaught itâ.
Michael thrust a present at her.
âOh Tank you Mikey,â She said and eagerly tore into the package.
âOoooo A camera!â She said, and Dan took it from her.
âIâll teach you how to use it,â Dan whispered in her ear.
âWe both will,â Phil whispered in her other ear, making her giggle. The rest of the day went by very happily.
Fiona Blyss Lester-Howell was five, and had the rest of the world laid out before her. She was able to do anything and everything she set her mind to. She would do great things with her life. Much like Michael, and Dory. This tale is now able to end.
The End.
Managing (#1)
Summary: Dan and Phil are both pregnant at the same time. Experience the joys of impending fatherhood; ready for loads of bants and snark coming your way. My first mpreg fic.
Prologue:
Dan and Phil had been dating for quite some time.
In fact it had been almost a year.
They'd been living together for six out of those eight years they'd known each other in a flat. They had decided to share the same room, but Dan still wanted his bed and fairy lights, for when it got too dark, and so, with much aggravation, they brought Dan's bed in with Phil's and together it made an almost king-sized bed. And so they slept together.
Month 1, morning of the impending announcement:
Dan Howell was usually a light sleeper. He went to bed at four a.m., and by the time he crawled into bed, and had snuggled down with Phil, Phil was starting to try and wake up. Sometimes. But today....
"BLURGH!" A retching noise came from the nearby loo, and Dan covered his head with one of their pillows.
"That's disgusting!" Dan slurred/yelled out.
"I can't help it! It's the sickness!" Came the pitiful response.
"Embryo, it's not even been a month yet, and don't forget...." Dan's voice trailed off as he flopped over onto his back.
"I know, I know! Mum wants us to visit the specialist!" Phil called back.
"That she does. How is it that we both ended up preggers again?" Dan asked.
âLots of unprotected sex, DNA, and a sprinkling of pixie dust,â Phil emerged from the bathroom, and grinned down at his flatmate, his lover.
"Aww Philly," Dan smirked, and opened one eye up at him.
"I like the pixie dust part," Dan answered, and sat upright on the bed.
âAwww Danny-Boy,â Phil responded in kind.
âUh-oh!â Phil raced back to the loo. Coupled with his motion sickness, morning sickness had been a constant plague in the flat. Only Dan didnât get morning sickness. No. He got cravings. Lots of  weird cravings.
They had decided to announce their pregnancies on a live show.
Since their announcement that they were dating nearly a year ago, thereâd been a huge support group. What if throwing a double pregnancy at their audience caused their sites to crumble? Men didnât normally get pregnant, at least not two at the same time. Â
âPhil? Are you going to be okay for the YouNow Broadcast?â Dan was worried.
He had tried to be supportive, and he hated it when Phil got sick. He swung his legs over the side of the massive bed, and put on some gray jogging bottoms, and put on a black T-shirt. He went to get the mop. As of late, that had been their routine. Phil equaled morning sickness, and Dan was the clean up crew. Â
A couple hours later:
âSo here we are, cutest couple on the internetâŠ.BLURGH!â Dan pretended to be sick all over the monitor.
Phil laughed a little, though not too much, as it might send him racing back to the porcelain toilet. Â
âAs we click baited, weâve got some important news. But since itâs real news, then it isnât click bait,â Dan tried to reach out to their audience.
âYou canât just do that waffling thing,â Phil protested. And then he spoke some more, âI have an announcement. Iâm eating for two!â He giggled and held up a pregnancy test.
âReally? Just like that? No music, no flare? Just âTa-da Iâm pregnantâ?â Dan tried to look stern, but he instantly melted at Philâs pout.
âTa-Da! Iâm pregnant!â Phil repeated. Then Phil spoke before Dan could again,
âAnd Danâs got an announcement too! Show them, please?â
âAlright, fine! I was going to wait until we got Philâs pregnancy questions sorted, but sure. Letâs make it doubly hard on me. Iâm in the baby way as well. Thanks a lot, Phil, for ruining the surprise,â Dan held up his own pregnancy test.
âNow before all the doctors on here say, âmen canât get pregnantâ....Thatâs true. Itâs very rare. And since weâre rare, and very clumsy, itâs happened to us. At the same time,â Dan started.
âDonât worry weâre going to see a professional,â Phil chimed in, as they fielded questions left and right. Â
âPhilâs mum, and my mum found a very good one,â Dan reaffirmed. Â
âWe donât know the genders. Weâre not that far along,â Dan said.
âI have an inkling,â Phil grinned.
They banted, they joked, they answered questions and then they shut off the laptop. Dan yawned widely. It was after midnight, and he was tired. He had been unusually achy as well. Coupled with the weird cravings, he just felt weird all over.
âLetâs go to bed,â Phil said.
âSounds good to me,â Dan answered. They made it to their bedroom, and fell face first onto the pillows.
The Next Morning:
âWake Up Dan!â Phil pleaded for, what seemed like the tenth time that morning.
âNo!â Dan mumbled against the pillow.
âWe have an appointment,â Phil slid back the curtains, and Dan rolled onto his side to escape the brightness; Phil hopped onto the bed, and leaned over Danâs long legs.
âSheâs supposed to be really good!â Phil breathed in Danâs ear. Â
âYou donât stop breathing in my ear, and youâll be eating through a straw,â Dan gritted out, as Phil backed away slowly.
âBesides, shouldnât she be making house calls or something?â Dan asked, as he tried to go back to sleep.
âDoctors havenât been making house calls for  thousands of years. Get up!â Phil tugged on Danâs arm.
âAlright, alright, Iâm gonna get up, but Iâm not going to be all bubbly and fantastic,â Dan said.
âIâll make you some breakfast,â Phil wheedled.
âDeal!â Dan answered. Dan sat upright and tugged on his jogging bottoms, black of course; and he put on a dark gray jumper.
He felt his stomach rumble. Bless Phil for braving smells and being kind enough to bribe him with breakfast, so heâd be awake enough to endure the doctorâs office. Â After a hearty breaky, they arrived at the doctorâs office via the Tube. Doctor Alicia Taran was an expert in male/male pregnancy.
Sheâd had several same sex couples come into her practice, that were in the âfamily wayâ, but most of her experience had, mostly dealt with, one partner at a time. This was truly an unusual case. The two men waited in the room, side by side, heads down, feet touching feet, hands holding hands, breaths stilled for a moment at a time.
The clock ticked in the corner. Each had their hoodies over their heads.
âWhat if weâre both high risk? What if one of us is high risk? What ifâŠ.what if the babies donât survive? And how do we know weâre even pregnant? It could be a fluke,â Danâs insecurities tumbled out and under his breath.
Phil patted Danâs hand. âWell, we havenât been traveling recently so I shouldnât be as ill as I am right now,â Phil said.
âIt could just be a mutated form of the flu, or worse. You had swine flu before, what if youâve got avian flu?â Dan peeked up and over at Phil.
âI checked remember? The specialist assured me that I wouldnât be able to spread swine, or avian flu. You were there you nutter,â Phil responded, and playfully knocked knuckles with Dan.
âAnd since weâre on the subject of being paranoid. What about you? How do you know youâre pregnant?â Phil countered. Dan shrugged awkwardly.
âSo thatâs why weâre here. To really find out. Even though we both already suspect. Itâs rare. Very rare, but like I always sayâŠ.â Philâs voice trailed off.
Dan picked the sentence up again, âLife finds a way.â
âYup,â Phil nodded.
âLife always finds a way,â Dan repeated.
âSo there you go. Explanation, explained,â Phil said, and patted Danâs shoulder in a comforting way.
âMr. Howell? Mr. Lester?â A nurse walked up to them.
âThatâs us!â Dan said in a haltingly chipper way.
âFollow me, Dr. Taran will see to you shortly,â Nurse Hammerson said.
They followed her, both giving each other nervous glances. Once inside the room, Phil sat on the padded examining table, and Dan sat on one of the rolling stools, and started to roll briskly across the floor.
âCalm down,â Phil said. âShouldnât I be telling you to calm down?â Dan countered.
âIâm not the one using the floor like Mario Kartâs race track,â Phil doubly countered.
Just then, Dr. Taran appeared, she was dressed in sensible scrubs, and her hair was in a tight bun. âHello, I have read your files and youâre both pregnant?â She turned the statement into a question.
âItâs the only explanation we can come up with,â Dan spoke up.
âIâve been projectile vomiting for nearly a month, and that almost never happens except when Iâm sat in a car or a train, or anything that moves,â Phil explained.
âAnd Iâve been having the most unusual cravings. For the past few weeks, Iâve been craving this peanut butter smoothie, with barbecue crisps, and some orange gelatin all blended together, and Iâve just been drinking the hell out of it,â Dan also explained.
âRight, right, well it sounds as if you might be becoming parents. Which, if this is what you wantâŠ.â Doctor Taranâs voice trailed off.
âWell they werenât planned, but weâre keeping them. If they are a them,â Phil said.
âRight, well letâs get on with it. Who wants to go first? Daniel?â She glanced at Dan who was leaning against the wall now, arms crossed protectively over himself. He shook his head,
Dan sarcastically smiled, âPhil likes to try new things.â
âAlrighty then,â Doctor Taran turned to Phil. âIf youâll be so kind as to lie on your back, and pull your shirt up just a little,â She instructed, and rubbed the goop onto Philâs bare stomach.
âC-Cold,â Philâs teeth chattered.
âSorry,â Dr. Taran said, and she put the handheld monitor over him. There appeared a slight fuzzy blob on the screen, and Phil waved.
âSheâs beautiful,â Phil gasped out.
âShe?â Doctor Taran looked confused.
âIâm psychic,â Phil explained. Â Doctor Taran looked at Dan who shrugged helplessly.
âOkay?â Doctor Taranâs response was weak. Â
âMy grandmother was psychic and passed the gift on to me, therefore Iâm psychic and sheâs gonna be a girl. Arenât you Dorothy Catherine?â Phil asked as the blob moved towards the screen and seemed to âkissâ it.
âWell âsheâsâ responsive I guess?â Doctor Taran blinked.
âShe knows who her daddy is! Donât you Sweet Pea?â Phil cooed at the screen.
Dan had abandoned the wall and was sat next to his significant other, holding his hand, and smirked as the baby bounced about.
âOh dear, I get motion sick. Could you please settle?â Phil asked of the baby.
âShe canât hear you,â Doctor Taran protested. The baby instantly calmed down.
âYou were saying?â Dan and Phil asked at the same time.
âI guess I was wrong,â Doctor Taran answered.
âI guess so,â Phil grinned at her.
âYour turn Mr. Howell,â Doctor Taran guided Phil off of the table. Phil sat beside Dan, and held his hand.
âI canât wait! Double the babies, double the fun!â Phil squeaked out.
When it came time for Dan to be slathered in goop, the same sort of fuzzy blob appeared. But something swiped across the screen. Dan lifted himself up, propping himself on one elbow.
âDid you just flip me off? How the hell did you even learn that?! You canât even see the outside world! Donât you flip me off again!â Dan was shouting at the screen now.
âNo, no, little genderless child, who I am definitely not assigning a gender to, unless you want a gender, or if you want to wear a sparkly tutu and heels, I wonât object. But I am definitely objecting to when you flip me off. Youâre in timeout now, and until youâre born,â Dan said.
âThat was not nice, you donât flip anyone off. Ever,â Philâs quiet voice chimed in.
âDid  you hear that voice? That was your other parent. Donât go flipping people off,â Dan said.
Doctor Taran face-palmed. This was the most unusual ultrasound session sheâd ever had, and sheâd had plenty of unusual ones. Â The same sort of fuzziness swiped across the screen again.
âOkay, I warned you, youâre in timeout,â Dan said.
âI think we know youâre both pregnant, Iâll be overseeing your cases for the next few months; and if you have any problems, questions, hereâs my mobile number,â Doctor Taran handed them a card that looked to be a business card. Â
Going Home:
âWeâre going to be parents, confirmed. This is going to be such a maniacal, topsy-turvy household,â Dan worried.
âWeâll be fine. The kids will be well rounded, with senses of humour and tons of love poured on them,â Phil responded.
âYeah, I guess, Iâve never been a parent before,â Dan insisted.
âNeither have I. But weâve got two sets of great examples,â Phil answered.
âAnd weâll have our mums to help out and give advice,â Dan said.
âPrecisely!â Phil held up a pointer finger.
âChristmas is going to be so expensive,â Dan sighed.
âAgain, family, the grandmothers will love to spoil the grands,â Phil insisted.
They arrived home from the Tube in one piece.
And they both went and called their families. Of course both mothers were thrilled, and both fathers gave grudging congratulations. Adrian wasnât too sure about the male biological system, and being only fifteen he really thought it was disgusting that his brother was pregnant.
âAll I can think about is placentas,â was his one and only wry comment.
âThanks, thanks a lot Adrian,â Dan muttered, and said goodbye to his family.
Then another phone callâŠ. Â
âYES!! Iâm finally going to be an uncle? Iâll be the best uncle that ever uncled, in the entire âUncle-y Universeâ!â Martyn said, very thrilled. Â
âThatâs so exciting. So any names picked out?â Cornelia asked.
âJust the one so far; because Philâs so sure itâs going to be a girl,â Dan said.
âShe is! Her nameâs Dorothy Catherine. I think Iâll call her âDoryâ,â Phil decided.
âThatâs such a cute name,â Cornelia gushed.
âNikki, will be the best Auntie in the universe,â Martyn interrupted.
âOh Martyn,â Cornelia said. There was the sound of a loud kiss, and Phil nearly dropped the phone,
âBye you two love birds.â Phil ended the phone call.
 âThat was interesting,â Dan said.
âWell you know my family,â Phil answered.
âAnd youâre the shy one?â Dan asked. Phil shrugged and smiled broadly. Â
Dan threw a pillow at him, which he ducked but it grazed his shoulder. Phil stuck out his lower lip and sank down onto the foot of the elongated bed.
âYouâve injured me,â Phil said.
âHave I?â Dan sat down next to Phil
âYou have,â Phil milked the injury.
âWell the carrier of your child is having a mini crisis,â Dan pointed out.
âThe carrier of my child?â Phil furrowed his brows, as Dan leaned into him, using his patented stare to look deep into Philâs eyes.
âIâm not assigning myself a role, just like Iâm not assigning this kid a gender, until he, or she, comes into their own,â Dan replied.
âI feel bad for assigning Doryâs gender,â Phil sighed.
âDonât feel bad. Iâm sure she wanted you to know,â Dan patted Philâs shoulder.
âThanks,â Phil answered, looking less sad, but he leaned his head on Danâs shoulder, and Dan patted his cheek.
âIâm so glad Iâm back on solid food,â Phil suddenly said.
âIt feels nice when I donât have to brandish a mop every morning,â Dan said.
âThatâs true, and not feeling the top of the porcelain top of the toilet is nice. Iâm hungry now that weâre talking about solid food,â Phil said.
âWhat dâya need? Anything crazy?â Dan asked.
âNo, I just want some cereal,â Phil said, standing up.
âMe too. Letâs go eat some and weâll have a nice sit down and eating binge,â Dan said standing up as well, and taking Philâs hand in his.Â
They managed to make their way to the kitchen without a single incident. Luckily being pregnant sort of equalized their equilibriums and they were pretty steady on their feet. Â So far.
Month 4:
âSo Iâm thinking weâll make it gender neutral, a nice soft yellow,â Dan said of the spare room.
âI like it, and we can buy things in bulk, and two cribs. Weâll need two of everything,â Phil said.
âDonât I know it. Weâll have to buy enough nappies, and bottles, and clothes to provide for an Army. Even though thereâll only be two babies in the flat,â Dan answered.
âMaybe one day weâll get a proper house,â Phil mused.
âA white picket fence?â Dan asked.
âIf thatâs what makes you happy,â Phil said.
âNo, infinite Wi-Fi, thatâd be a dream home,â Dan replied.
âAs long as itâs free,â Phil chuckled a little.
âAlways thinking frugally,â Dan returned.
âI know! Letâs order all the stuff online,â Phil suggested.
âGreat idea,â Dan took control of the desktop, and Phil laid down on his back and looked up at the ceiling.
âBulk?â Dan asked.
âBulk, bulk, bulk it up,â Phil murmured.
âThings Phil Shouldnât Say Volume 14,â Dan responded.
Dan ordered what they needed and he looked down at Phil who was still on the floor, but his eyes were closed.
âCome lay over here. Youâve got that look in your eyes,â Phil added.
âWhat look? You canât see me, your eyes are closed,â Dan said, although he got out of the chair and went to lie beside his significant other.
âYou forget, I am psychically connected to the universe. Ergo you. You are my universe, now get under my arm, and cuddle me you fool,â Phil blindly kissed Dan, and ended up kissing him on the arm.
âYeah, thanks for that,â Dan grumbled good naturedly, and he cuddled as best as he could. Their tiny bumps touching a bit.
âTheyâre going to be almost twins,â Phil piped up.
âClose enough, but I think Dory will come first. Sheâll be ready to see the world,â Dan guessed.
âMaybe. Donât judge a baby by its cover,â Phil answered.
âDonât what?â Dan made his way over to Philâs lower body, and made it so that Phil was his body pillow.
âAhhh much better,â Dan leaned back and closed his eyes.Â
âSure make yourself at home,â Phil smiled, and put an arm over Dan. The two fell asleep shortly thereafter.
Month six:
âIf I get any bigger Iâll pop!â Dan said.
âI look like Iâm going to have twins, but thereâs just Dory in there,â Phil piped up.Â
âI canât even tie my own fucking trainers,â Dan replied.
âI donât even know what trainers are anymore,â Phil opined.Â
âSorry,â both said in unison. They helped the other out of bed, and made their ways slowly towards the kitchen.
âMind the glass door,â Dan said a bit too late.
âOuch! New brain cells!â Phil held his forehead and part of his eye socket.
âYeahhhâŠ.Move out of the way?â Dan asked.
Phil moved and Dan slid the door open. Â They ate their meals in silence.
âWe really need to move,â Dan said.
âAfter the babies are born, and maybe a few months old,â Phil said.
âIf these cracks get any bigger, and if those people donât stop drilling, and if that neighbour downstairs doesnât stop with the sex noises, weâll have to start looking; more than just glancing at the classifieds,â Dan said.
âAlright,â Phil nodded.
âI want a brick house, Wi-Fi, a picket fence, a huge garden, and you know just the stereotypical place where we can potentially raise a family,â Dan said.
âI hear ya. I hear ya. Weâll start looking soon. And then weâll move when theyâre about a year old or so,â Phil said, and patted Danâs shoulder.
âIâm tired of hearing that damned phone ringing!â Dan groused. Â
âMe too,â Phil sympathised. Â
âWeâll look after the babies are born,â Dan closed the conversation.
He put the bowl in the sink, and walked out of the kitchen, slightly bumping his head a bit.
âSon of a bitch,â Dan said through gritted teeth.
âNot in earshot of the babies,â Phil protested.
âDamned door,â Dan gritted out, as Phil patted his back.
Month 7, Finished nursery/new arrival?:
It was the middle of the night. Dan was awake like usual, and he was recording the nurseryâs new finished look. It was a good thing that both of them slept on their backs, because they were much heavier now.
âSo weâve got double the nappies, the two cots symmetrically in a corner, the little mobiles above the bed, and just all around cuteness,â Dan said into the camera as a twinge assaulted his back, and he grimaced.
Heâd edit out the grimace later he decided. But then, a sharp pain through his abdomen brought him up short.
âPHIIIILLLLL!!!!â Dan called out.
âYeah?!â Philâs quick response, followed by a swift jog into the nursery, had his flatmate by his side in no time.
âWhat is it?â Phil looked concernedly at Dan.
âI-I thinkâŠ.â Dan squeezed his eyes shut.
âI think, Iâm in labourâŠ.â Dan gasped out as another sharp pain hit, and he doubled over.
Phil helped Dan to the sofa and surrounded him with pillows, he called 9-9-9, and was assured an ambulance was on the way.
As they waitedâŠ. âShit! My fucking water just broke!â Dan exclaimed between contractions.
âOh dear,â Phil said, and he fidgeted.
Just then there was a banging on the front door. Phil let the EMTs in and they carried Dan down to the gurney.
Phil took out his camera, âHi guys! So this is the ambulance taking us to the hospital. It looks as if Danâs in labour. Hopefully weâll have news soon.â He cut off the camera and hopped inside the back of the emergency vehicle.
âDid you just upload a video, whilst Iâm lying here in the back of this ambulance, in agony!?â Dan gritted his teeth.
âMaybe?â Phil meekly answered.
âARGH!â Dan grunted back.
âSorry?â Phil furrowed his brows. Dan just blindly reached for Philâs hand.
âIf youâll stop having a domestic argument for a minuteâŠ.â The paramedic said, and put an oxygen mask over Danâs face.
âHeartbeats are normal, everythingâs pretty much regulated. Breathe Mr. LesterâŠ.â Susan the paramedic said.
âIâm Daniel Howell,â Dan managed to breathe out.
âRight, sorry, we just assumedâŠ.â The other paramedic, Fernando started.
âNot yet,â Phil sounded hopeful, Dan just glared at him, and squeezed Philâs hand so hard, it cracked a bit.
âNot so hard Dan,â Phil pleaded. Dan squeezed harder.
âOUCH!â Phil bit his lower lip and his eyes slightly watered with the pain. Dan slid the oxygen mask off,
âYeah, how dâya like that? Iâm in labour and youâre prattling on about stupid shit. Uploading a video without my consent. Arsehole,â Dan muttered.
âS-Sorry Dan,â Phil managed to splutter out.
They made it to the hospital, thankfully Phil was in one piece, minus the hurting hand, and Dan was still in labour. Doctor Taran met them, and wheeled him into the O.R. Phil was ordered to wash up, and then it was time for the cesarean section.
âI need medicine!â Dan yelled out.
âWeâve got an anesthesiologist on the way now,â Doctor Taran assured him.
âHeâs so early and heâll be so tiny,â Phil blurted out.
âHe?! Tiny?! Phil? Did you know the gender before me?â Dan asked.
âYou didnât want to know, and I did, and I sneaked a sneaky-peek at her clipboard,â Phil admitted.
âPhiiilllll!!!!â Dan grunted, just as the anesthesiologist came in.
Dan was helped into a sitting position and they injected him in the spine.
âJesus Fuckinâ Christ!â Dan yelped.
âItâll be okay Dan,â Phil promised.
âNo it wonât!â Dan yelped again, as Phil took out his camera and he chronicled the birth.
âYou put that camera away, and be moral support!â Doctor Taran commanded. Phil reluctantly put the camera down, and went to sit beside Dan.
They opened him up, and a few minutes later, Dan was presented with a boy.
âHeâll probably be jaundiced, and heâll probably need to stay in the NICU, but he looks fine,â Doctor Taran announced. Phil cut the cord, and soon the baby was washed and swaddled.
âNow hash out names,â Doctor Taran said. She and the others had stitched Dan up. Dan was groggy, and a bit high from the meds.
âI can see our house from here,â Dan slurred.
âSure you canâŠ.â Phil, still holding the baby sidled up next to Dan.
âNames?â Phil asked.
âI want him to have both of our names,â Dan said, a moment of lucidity peeking through.
âJames Michael?â Phil asked. Dan shook his head in the negative.
âMichael Daniel James Philip?â Dan asked.
âHe needs to know how to write his name eventually, I donât want him to have carpal tunnel so early in life,â Phil chuckled, and looked down at the baby in his arms.
âMichael James?â Phil asked
.Â
âMichael Daniel?â Dan said at the same time.
âI like Michael Daniel,â Dan said.
âMichael Daniel  heâll be,â Phil decided.
Then Phil questioned,âLast name?â
Dan sighed and answered, âI donât care.â
âWhat about Michael Daniel Lester-Howell?â Phil prodded.
âI guess,â Dan yawned.
âWelcome to the world, Michael Daniel Lester-Howell,â Phil grinned, and Dan reached his arms up to cradle the newborn, and kiss his forehead.
âI see you hashed out the names right quick,â Doctor Taran said in an approving voice.
âYeah,â Phil said, and Dan reluctantly handed the baby over, and then Dan was wheeled to the recovery room. Michael didnât stay very long in the NICU, he was pronounced healthy although premature.
Two and a half months later:
Phil was overdue by half of a month, and he was getting tireder and tireder of waiting for the little one to come out. He hid himself in his room. He was cranky, and Dan was in charge of taking care of Michael, feeding the three of them, and being on top of their YouTube enterprise. Â Michael was, surprisingly asleep, and Dan, was just finishing up plateing some fruits, and vegetables, going to give Phil something to eat.
Dan looked over at the baby, âYour sister seems to be quite comfortable where sheâs at. Like me. I wasnât ready to see the worldâŠ.â
He paused and then continued, âJust stay asleep for a few more minutes.â He padded to the bedroom, and sat beside Phil who was concentrating on his laptop screen. He nudged Philâs arm.
âWhat is it?â Phil almost, not quite, snapped at him.
âIâve got you some food you weirdo,â Dan answered, and Phil looked at the plate.
âYummy,â Phil answered and settled the plate on the duvet. The duvet rippled with the babyâs movements.
âI wish sheâd come out,â Phil said for what seemed like the millionth time.
âShe will when sheâs ready; meantime letâs make a collaboration video. Youâve been stuck in here for far too long. And whilst I like solitude as much as the next person, I miss you,â Dan wheedled.
Phil smiled a little and munched on a carrot stick.
âBesides Michaelâs asleep,â Dan said.
âAlright, well done, youâve convinced me,â Phil put the plate beside him, and got out of bed, steadying himself on the headboard.
âSo you will?â Dan asked.
âOf course I will. Just need a shower, and a quick change,â Phil answered.
Dan took a moment to admire his partnerâs body, and would have taken that moment to get in the shower with him, but a cry interrupted his thoughts and he went to see about the baby.
âAre you hungry?â Dan asked, as the baby looked up at him with tear filled eyes. Eyes the same shape, and probably would be the same color as Philâs. He already had Danâs hair, it would be interesting to see how he looked as he grew.
Dan found a dummy on the floor, washed it and stuck it in the babyâs still open mouth and the crying subsided. Dan smiled, and picked up the baby. He cooed at him, then put him back in the swing.
âI love you so much,â Dan whispered, and sat down on the sofa. He opened his own laptop. Phil walked in, and he leaned over the swing. Michael reached up and reached for Philâs fringe.
âHey hey, I just got the fringe how I wanted it,â Phil kissed the babyâs chubby cheek, and sat down beside Dan. He put the plate next to him on one of the tables.
âReady?â Dan asked. Phil nodded as he munched on some carrot sticks. He was ready.
âI feel like a whale,â Phil muttered, as a slight electric shiver went up and down his back. He rolled his shoulders.
Instantly Dan was on the alert, âPhil? You alright?â
âYeah I think so,â Phil said, and turned a slight shade of sickly greenish-white.
âIâm fine,â Phil repeated.
âOkay,â Dan said as they went live. But then Philâs hand slammed the lid of the laptop.
âIâm not fine!â He stood and warm liquid seeped through his trousers.
âShit!â Dan said, and he scrambled for the phone. First he called an ambulance. Then he waited, like Phil had done with him. He texted Susan Howell, and then he texted Catherine.
Susan, being a bit closer was there in a little over twenty minutes, she had broken every speeding law known to man, and sheâd managed to drag Adrian with her.
âAbout time,â Susan said as she hugged Dan, and felt Philâs forehead. The paramedics arrived, and Phil was loaded onto it.
âIf I die, I want you to take good care of Dory,â Phil said, in between his breathing exercises.
âYouâre not gonna die you ass. I went through this, and I didnât die!â Dan âencouragedâ. Â
âThanks Dan. I feel so much betterâŠ.Hee-hee-hooooooâŠ.â Phil breathed in and out.
âThatâa boy,â Dan said, and they got into the ambulance. It was the same procedure all over again, and soon they were in a recovery room.
A plastic baby cot next to Philâs bed.
âSheâs gorgeous, sheâs ginger, and sheâs asleep. Three very good things for a baby to be,â Dan said, as he gingerly held the baby girl in his arms.
His daughter, their daughter. Dorothy Catherine.
âMum laughed, and was pleased at the same time when I told her the name,â Phil started.
âReally?â Dan asked.
âYeah, and then she asked Martyn and Cornelia why they hadnât given her grandchildren yet, seeing as theyâve been together for as long as weâve known each other,â Phil said, and chuckled.
âWhatâd Martyn say/do?â Dan asked.
âHe nearly choked on his water, and âNelia  said it would happen all in good time,â Phil said. âCorneliaâs good at smoothing things over. Just like you Phil,â Dan nodded, and handed the baby back to his partner. His life mate.
Epilogue:
A red brick house, a white picket fence, a huge garden. Two men were vlogging, while the raven haired one was grilling and wearing his âbody builderâ apron. It flapped in the mild breeze, and two children were chasing each other.
One had unraveling plaits flying behind her, her ribbons ripped to shreds. Her hair was a dull red, almost a strawberry red, just like her uncle Martynâs hair. The two were both wearing jeans, though the boy who had brown hair, and tri-colored eyes was wearing a rainbow striped jumper. The girl was wearing a pink sparkling jumper, she had dark brown eyes like Daniel. She suddenly tripped.
âOh dear! Iâve ripped my jeans again,â Â she said, and looked down at her dirty hands, wiping them on the side of her jeans.
âItâs okay, Iâve ripped mine too,â The boy said as he caught his breath and stood beside her.Â
âMichael Daniel Lester-Howell did you undo your sisterâs plaits?!â Dan yelped.
âHa-Ha Papa Bear full named you,â the girl said.
âShut up Dory,â he playfully slapped her arm.
âNo I didnât!â he turned to answer his father.
âGood,â Dan sat down and finished.
âGrubâs up. Letâs eat fam,â Phil said, as he plated up the burgers.
âDonât ever say fam,â Dan implored.
âHashtag letâs eat?â Phil tried again, as the children sat down.
âNo! Stop trying to be trendy,â Dan said.
âNobody says hashtag anymore,â Michael said.
âThen what do they say?â Dan asked.
âThey say hash-hash,â Michael said it all in one word.
âNobody cares,â Dory said. The two parents laughed.
âAlright guys, time to go,â Dan finished the vlog.
âSay bye everyone,â Phil said.
âGoooodddâŠ.Bye!â Phil started.
âBye guys,â Dan said.
âLater,â Michael said.
âLove you,â Dory said. Then it was cut off and uploaded.
âEat!â Phil said, and they all dug in.
The End.

Disclaimer I wrote  this before the London Bridge Tragedy, and I apologise if, some people think Iâm disrespecting it. I am not. I love London, and one day, I hope to see it in its full glory. In real Life HD.
So it ends:
This was it. The last straw. The end of it all.
The empire of awkwardness had thoroughly crumbled. The era had ended. It was over. It was finished. Things were spiraling. A pale hand drew the lapel of the coat closer to his neck. The scarf was doing nothing against the biting wind. The air was thick with fog. Welcome to London. The boots scraped against the cobblestones. So what if the city roads were mostly asphalt, but the cobblestones remained from a different time.
A different place.
His breath excreted hot air that spun about his head in icy puffs. Let the wind blow. Let whatever deities that were around, if there were any, take him now. Please.
âGo on! Take Me! Do IT!â He screamed into the night air, his arms now outstretched and he looked up at the unforgiving sky; it hid the stars and the moon. It hid everything except for the twinkling lights in the houses. Houses that were full of happiness, of joy.
There was no joy in the maisonette.
There was nothing but anger and sorrow. Anger over something stupid. Sorrow over something that could have been repaired if they werenât so hot headed, so stubborn. So full of regret now.
But it could never be repaired, Phil was dead. He had cut his wrists and heâd bled out. Phil was gone. Dan had carried his limp, lifeless body downstairs and had called the ambulance, and the funeral home. They had taken his body away hours ago. They had asked him about arrangements for the funeral.
But no. He couldnât think about that now. He had to cleanse himself from any sins, from every sin. Which is hard to do when youâre an atheist. Agnostic, he corrected himself.
Whatever he believed in, he alternately disbelieved in. Thatâs how it worked didnât it?
âTake me you idiots. Take me! I deserve to go. The writers always kill Phil off first, and then I do myself in. Isnât that the way itâs supposed to be? Isnât he supposed to come back as a vampire? Isnât he supposed to melt into goo when Harry Styles exits his body?
Isnât that the way Fuckinâ Fanfiction Works?! Assholes!â
Heâd looked behind him, just in case Phil had become the first undead in history. Itâd be just like Phil to become an undead, itâd be in his nature. He bowed his head against the wind that was furiously blowing. The trees were bowing, and swaying. They were mourning a life that was gone too soon. What had happened that Phil would just take his life?
Phil. The one full of energy. The one full of light. The one whose eyes sparkled when he ate ice cream, when he got chased by a squirrel. Whenever he would entertain Dan.
âFuck Life!â Dan said, as he steered himself towards London Bridge. He knew itâd be busy. But he didnât care.
Let him get hit by a damned car. Let all the fanfictions come true.  Heâd get hit by a car, eaten by a wolf. Be decapitated somehow. Heâd jump off the bridge if none of the above happened. He steadily walked on the pedestrianâs side of the bridge. Head still bowed, mouth open breathing out the breath he still had left. Kicking small pebbles out  of the way.
âFuck You!!!!â Dan yelled against the torturous wind. It wasnât like it couldnât snow at any time. But snow wasnât in the forecast. âNeither was Phil dying. Philâs suicide wasnât in the cards. He was only thirtyâŠ.â Danâs voice trailed off.
He had debated on whether he should inform the rest of the family about Philâs passing and he pulled out his phone. Heâd call his second mother.
ââCath?â His voice shook.
âDaniel?â Her voice was in the concerned range now. Then it would escalate to anger, and then sadness.
âI have some bad news,â Dan gulped.
âWhat is it? Is it Phil?â Catherine asked.
âYeah. I mean, yes. Mrs. Lester, it is my regret to inform you that, Philip Michael Lester committed suicide by slitting his wrists earlier this morning. Iâve called the local funeral home, and his body is there for the moment. Mummy, I need you,â Dan completely broke down.
Heâd never called Catherine âMummyâ, not even in jest. The anguished cry that fell upon his ears made Dan pull away from the receiver.
âHeâs not!â Catherine saidâŠ.Denial. âHe canât be.â Uncertainty. âNo he isnât! God please donât let it be.â Bargaining.
âMum?â Danâs voice broke through to her.
âIâm coming. Call Martyn,â Catherine said decidedly.
âI donât think I can. Corneliaâs the only one at their flat. Martynâs been taken to the local mental institution. She said he was going absolutely, stark raving, mad. It hit him all of a sudden, and then PhilâŠ.â Dan gulped again.
âPhilâŠ.He wasnât acting like himself. Heâd been, he was doing...God I donât remember. Itâs all a blur. And I think I have it now. This, this, this overwhelming desire to, do something bad. Something I know that will hurt me and others around me. I donât want to be like this Mum,â Dan said again.
âWhere are you?â Catherine asked.
âLondonâs Bridge,â Dan said.
âThe Londonâs Bridge?â Catherineâs voice wobbled, but she wanted to make sure of his location. She couldnât lose him too. It was her duty as his surrogate mother, to keep him safe.
âYeah,â Dan said, his voice getting slower and thicker.
âDonât do anything rash. Iâll ring your mother,â Catherine said.
âButâŠ.I donâtâŠ.I tried ringing her. Sheâs not answering. Neither is my father. Neither is Adrian. But Adrian never answers his phoneâŠ.â Danâs voice trailed off once again.
âGo to somewhere warm. Go to a pub,â Catherine pleaded.
âI canât. It wonât let me,â Dan said.
âWhat wonât let you?â Catherine asked.
âHe wonât let me. Heâs followed me. Heâs controlling my movements, where I go.... Heâs not a âheâ in the normal sense of thingsâŠ.HeâŠ.ItâsâŠ.IâmâŠ.â He swung a leg over the rampart of the bridge. Then the other leg followed suit until he was seated and overlooking the Thames River.
âI have to go Catherine. Heâs calling me. Tell my mother, tell Dad, tell Nigel, tell everyone that I love, goodbye for me. Iâll leave my phone on the bridge partâŠ.â His voice was gone. Caught up in the wind.
The water looked so inviting, its liquid swirling a bit, steam rising from frothy pools.
âIâll go and join Phil. He needs me. Iâm his friendâŠ.â Dan was dazed. He was slurring his words.
âDaniel? Daniel?!â Catherineâs voice only slightly penetrated Danâs hazy brain.
âNo, itâs too late. Theyâre both calling to me. Iâve gotâŠ.Iâm goingâŠ.I love you all!â Dan was just about to jump when something grabbed the back of his arm, lurching him off of the bridge.
It was a policeman. âYoung man, what are you doing on this bridge? You know itâs illegal to be up here,â the policeman kindly said.
âYou donât understand officer. I have to. Heâs told me I have to. Iâve got to join Phil, and myâŠ.and the others. Heâs said so,â Dan babbled.
âCome along,â the officer frog marched him to the waiting car. But Dan wriggled out of the grip, and made a beeline for the bridge again.
âNo!â Dan shouted. He looked beyond the officer, and saw âHimâ.
âCome DanielâŠ.Join usâŠ.I have PhilâŠ.Heâs waiting for youâŠ.â The specter said. â
Whatâs your name?â Dan breathed in and out irregular breaths. He put his hand over his heart.
âI am the one you summoned for your video. The one called âHimâ....or Geoffery if you would prefer to put a mortal name on myself,â âGeofferyâ answered.
âJeffery, you know with a âJâ,â Dan managed. He didnât notice the police officer scratching his head, and calling for backup.
âJump Daniel. Itâs not so far. All youâve feared will be laid to rest once youâve given up the mortal coil,â The specter said in a soft lilting, melodic tone.
âPhilip listened. Heâs waiting for you,â The tone became scathing, almost angry.
The bony finger pointed at the bridge. The tattered cape blowing in the breeze. But this breeze around him was hot, and smelled of sulfur. Dan wrinkled his nose at the smell. He regained his spot on the bridge, the cold wind blowing the back of his head, his hair blowing, and then he saw Philâs face in the water.
âHi Dan, itâs okay. Donât fight it anymore. Iâm lonely without youâŠ.â Philâs voice and face faded away. Â
âPhil! No!â Dan scrambled down the side of the bridge, hanging by one hand above the river, the river became frothier, it swirled in zigzag patterns, and there was a slight whirlpool in a corner somehow.
The wind picked up and began a howling so fierce, it brought even more fear to him. Â
Just then a hand reached out and pulled him onto the bridge again. This time he was in a kneeling position and someone had ensconced themselves around him, caressing his head, talking soothingly to him.
âDanielâŠ.Sweet sweet  child,â she said. âIâm here,â she continued.
âC-Catherine?â His teeth were chattering now. He was so cold, so empty. Nothing meant anything anymore.
âItâs me. Your mother is waitingâŠ.Somethingâs happening to the men, and sheâs beside herself. Weâll save you Love,â Catherine promised.
âNobody can save me. Jeffery, he wants me. PhilâŠ.Philâs all alone. Philâs cold. Philâs never cold! MartynâŠ.Martyn left CorneliaâŠ.Whatâs happening? Make it stop CatherineâŠ.Make it stop...Please?â He pleaded. His vision was so clouded,  he couldnât see straight.
âIâll bring you to your mumâs,â Catherine said.
âWhereâs Adrian? Whereâs my dad?â Dan was trying to come to his senses.
âSusan doesnât know. She went out for a bit of milk, and when she came back your father and he, they were gone. No note. Nothing,â Catherine helped the young man to his feet.
âJefferyâs got them. Theyâre not coming back eitherâŠ.Phil, Phil was raging and then he went into the bathroom, not the looâŠ.The bathroom. He found a razor. He-He-He cut his wrists, he bled out before I could get the door open. The door wasnât even locked. Something was keeping him in. I couldnât get to him Catherine. I tried! And when I could get to himâŠ.He was gone! The light was gone!â He trembled as they walked to the waiting taxi.
His knees buckling underneath him. âIâm going soon too. I wonât be here any longer. Heâs taking us all. You and Mum, youâll be all alone. Iâm s-sorry,â Dan gulped. His breathing became sharp, and his chest constricted.
âI-I canât help it. Heâll be here. Soon. Heâll catch up with meâŠ.With usâŠ.He wants revenge. He wants whatâs owed to him. And he knows how to get it. He wants me,â Dan leaned against her. Using his whole body, pushing against her. Needing her. But trying to protect her at the same time.
âIfâŠ.IFâŠ..Someoneâs got to tell our audiences,â Dan finally spoke lucidly. At least for a moment.
âPlease save your strength. Â Weâll be at your motherâs house soon as we can. Try and sleep Sweetie,â Catherine soothed.
âHow did you get here so fast? The Isle of Man is so far,â Dan slurred.
âI was already in the city,â Catherine said.
âBut how?â Dan was demanding. He was also tired, and he glanced out the window. The reflection was distorted. And then âHisâ face appeared, and then Philâs face flashed before him. Then Martynâs face, then his dadâs face, then it was Adrian. Then it began to loop.
He quickly shut his eyes.
âWhat youâve been throughâŠ.â Catherine started.
âHe wants me. He wonât stop no matter how hard we try. I need you and Mum to go online and tell our audience. Tell them we went the best way we knew how, to end the torment. To sacrifice ourselves so that our loved ones can live,â Dan said, as he blinked his eyes, trying to adjust his sight.
He felt as if, he was going blind now. Grief, terror, filling every fiber of his being. She wrapped her arms around him as tightly as she could, whilst urging the driver to drive faster, to get them to their destination quicker.
âIâm going as fast as I can. Trafficâs a bit of a trial,â the man bit off the expletive before it could be aired out. He was in the presence of a lady after all.
âThank you. Thatâs all I ask,â Catherine turned her attention back to Dan.
âDaniel?â It was so strange to say his full name. Heâd been âDanâ for so long, but heâd grown up as well. He wasnât eighteen anymore. Though heâd always be eighteen in her eyes. That was the age sheâd adopted him after all.
âYes?â He responded, he only responded to Daniel now.
âDaniel, weâre almost there. You rest against me, and Iâll wake you when weâre there,â Catherine soothed.
âAlright, and Iâm sorry for calling you Mummy,â Dan said.
âYou were, are, in panic mode. Youâre grieving. I understand, and Iâm glad you at least got through to me. Though your mother is worried sick. She said she never received any phone calls from you,â Catherine continued.
âThaâs bâcause He blocked them,â Danâs voice was slurring again, as he drifted off into an uneasy slumber.
âShhhâŠ.â She patted his head, and shifted so he would be more comfortable.
They made it to Reading in record time, and a lot of money out of pocket. Catherine didnât mind. Though she was on a frugal budget. Getting Daniel to safety was her top priority; not only as a friend but as his adoptive mother. Susan didnât mind âsharing custodyâ of Daniel.
She quite enjoyed the friendly rivalry of hers and Catherineâs âmothering techniques â. Though Catherine was more âhome centeredâ, Susan was business centered, letting her children âfend for themselvesâ more often than not. Not being there all the time. But she wasnât cold or heartless. She was warm and inviting in her own way.
Not exactly standoffish, but she was reserved. Catherine cracked the jokes, Catherine made the small talk. But Susan would keep up her end of the conversations, filling in the gaps wherever necessary. Susan was a mother, just a different kind of mother. But when her boys were hurting, if they ever needed anything, she was always there to lend a motherly hand.
She met them at the door, as Catherine stumbled, half supporting, half walking with Daniel, Susan took Danielâs other side and she supported them both the rest of the way inside the house. Her eyes were red rimmed, and Catherine went to make a pot of tea whilst Susan settled Daniel horizontally on the sofa bed. Sheâd covered him in a duvet, and put a load of pillows behind his head.
âYouâre trembling Son,â Susan said.
âBecause heâs coming. Like the Nothing in that television show,â Dan said, and his teeth continued chattering, though there was a roaring fire going on in the fireplace and he was covered in a warm duvet.
âPhilâs gone Mum,â Dan felt the tears roll down his cheeks, the ache was so real.
The weight on his chest made it hard for him to breathe correctly.
âHeâs gone Mum, and I couldnât save him!â Dan struggled to sit up.
But Susan gently and firmly pushed him back down again. âSave your strength,â Susan accidentally repeated what Catherine had told him earlier in the taxi.
âSometimes you and Cath are so similar itâs a wonder youâre not bosom buddies as well,â Dan tried to joke, but ended up coughing instead.
âHow do you know weâre not best friends?â Susan tried to joke back, to calm her eldest.
âBecause youâre not. Youâre always so busy. Youâre always going on and on about the realtor business,â Dan retorted, his pulse slowing down finally as the fight or flight instinct drained away.
âWeâre mothers. Sometimes mothers think alike. Strange but true. Sometimes mothers have a hidden psychic connection, and even if we donât know about each other, weâre still the same. Weâre put on this earth to love and protect our children. Like Catherine and I are trying to do now. Trying to save you,â Susan said, in an unusually long speech.
Catherine chose at this time to return with a tray of tea. Silently obeying the unspoken request to sit up, Dan sat upright and Catherine served him some tea and savoury biscuits.
His hand shook so much on the way to his mouth, that both mothers took a hold of his wrist and guided the biscuit to his mouth.
âShall I steady the teacup?â Susan asked. Dan nodded, as tears spilled down his cheeks again. Suddenly his whole body stiffened, and like before at the bridge, he looked beyond the women.
âDid you miss me Daniel? I missed you. I see youâve gotten back up. They wonât last long. Theyâre roadblocks to be sure, but Iâll be back to get you. Youâre mine Daniel. Just like Philip; like Adrian, like your father, like Martyn, like NigelâŠ.All mine. Youâre next. Youâre my trophy sacrifice. The reason theyâre gone is because of you. Itâs all your fault. Your time on earth is short. Say goodbye to the earth. Nothing can stop me,â the voice cackled and the specter was gone again.
The savoury biscuit dropped the teacup spilled across his knee, and Susan took the cup and saucer from him. Catherine took the biscuit. He was slumped against the sofa again. He was shaking again; shaking his head, and his lips were trembling.
âHe came again. Didnât you see him? Canât you see that you canât protect me?! Iâm not getting out of here, unless I go with him. You two had better make yourselves scarce,â Dan weakly spoke.
Just then the phone rang. It was Cornelia. She was hysterical. Unusual for her. She was usually stoic, soft spoken.
âCatherine?â Her voice was shaking.
âNikki?â Catherine put the phone on speaker so that Corneliaâs voice was heard by all.
âHeâs come for me Catherine. Martynâs come for me. Heâs swinging a knife, and heâs going to kill me!â She shouted, and it sounded as if she were running for her life.
âGet out of the flat somehow. Come to us Nikki. Weâre at Susanâs place. Itâs a safe place,â Catherine pleaded.
âWeâll help you Cornelia,â Susan put in.
âI-Iâm afraid. Itâs not Martyn. Itâs his body. Itâs his face. Itâs not Martyn. Itâs evil. Itâs giving me chills,â Cornelia said, as a squeaking noise sounded. Almost sounding as if a window were opening.
âIâm jumping down the fire escape. If I can outrun him, Iâll be there in half an hourâŠ.â Corneliaâs voice cut off, and the line went dead.
âDonât you see? I have to get back to the bridge!â Dan stood and wobbled towards the door.
Two pairs of arms took him back to the sofa, and back under the duvet he went.
âIâm useless here. Iâm better off dead! Donât you Understand?!â
The fire whooshed, and it was soon out. A plume of smoke flew down the chimney morphing into a transparent specter with sharp nails, a face that was only an outline. Both women jumped.
âDid I Frighten You? Good. Iâm Here For The Boy,â âHeâ spoke.
Both women stood their ground, and formed a united barrier between the sofa and the horrible thing before them. âThen youâll have to go through us first,â Catherine challenged.
âA motherâs love is unrivaled. Therefore the two of us can and will, defeat you,â Susan answered, as a feeling of anger overtook her, and she balled her hand into a threatening fist.
âYouâll have to do more than that to get me to back down. Iâm ultimate power, more than you two weak humans are able to comprehend,â âJefferyâ said. Â
âLeave my mums alone!â Dan was sat up again. He swung his legs over the side of the sofa, and with the most strength, as he could muster, he stood in front of the two most important people in his life.
âTake me. Spare them. Donât take Martyn. I consent. Let Martyn be. Let Dad come back, let Adrian come backâŠ.Let...Let the others come back. Let Phil come backâŠ.â Danâs voice wavered. But he was resolute.
âTempting as your offer is, I donât think Iâll let Philip come back. Heâs mine fair and square. Heâd chosen to take his own life,â âJefferyâ answered, a couple of wispy fingers touching the outline of his chin.
âNot if heâd been in his right mind he wouldnât have chosen that route. Heâs Roman Catholic, and they believe that suicide is wrong. Me? Iâm Agnostic. Iâm a better choice. A better candidate,â Dan fired back.
âPathetic,â âJefferyâ scoffed.
âIâm offering my life for theirs. For each life youâve taken,â Dan responded.
He was shaking with renewed energy and anger.
âIâm ready. Iâve been ready my whole life. I donât have a soul. Itâs a dark, barren wasteland in there. Iâm sad. Iâm dreary. Even though Iâve re-branded. Itâs not enough. If Iâm the sole human you need, to complete thisâŠ.Whatever it isâŠ.Take Me You Asshole!â
âNot everything can be solved by a pathetic meat sack demanding something from me. Iâm as old as time itself. I take what I want, when I want it. This standoff is a waste of my timeâŠ.â âJefferyâ smirked.
With a flick of the ancientâs wrist, Dan felt red hot liquid shoot through his entire being. He fell to his knees, and he gasped for the very last breath of air he could manage. As the enraged, and shocked mothers looked on, he crawled, haltingly towards the specter. The being seemed to be sucking the life essence out of him. The women were powerless, and had to stand to the wayside, as every last ounce of life was drained out of him. Danâs body deflated, and he sagged into a lifeless mound.
âTell themâŠ.I lovedâŠ.ThemâŠ.IâŠ.Love You!â Were his final words.
Then it was over. Finished. Had it really happened? Had things happened the way theyâd just seen? So many questions. So little answers. A knock on the door sounded, and the  fleshy mound disappeared into the floor. Sucked dry by the specter as it disappeared into the nothingness. Susan took a deep breath. Whatever was on the other side, it couldnât be good.
Catherine went with her. Perhaps it would turn out to be good news? Side by side they walked to the door. Determined to fight some more if need be.
âIf I die young, bury me in satin, lay me down on a bed roses...Sink me in the river at dawn, send me away with the words of a love song, âŠ.Lord make  me a rainbow, Iâll shine down on my mother  sheâll know Iâm safe with you, when she stands under my colours; and no life ainât always what you think it ought to be⊠Ainât even grey but she buries her babyâŠ.â A song was heard through the streets.
âI recognise this song. Itâs American. But itâs fitting,â Catherine said, as she put a hand on the knob, Susan put hers on top and the door was flung open.
Cornelia was on the other side. She was breathless and had a bit of blood on her shirt.
âCornelia, Darling,â Susan breathed out.
âNikki!â Catherine buried her almost daughter into a hug.
âHeâs gone,â Cornelia breathed out.
âGone? How?â Susan asked.
âHe just...He became slimy goop and disappeared into the ground,â Cornelia answered.
Then she continued, âWhereâs Dan?â
The two women looked at the ground, then back up at the redhead, as they ushered her inside. They made her a cup of still piping hot tea.
âYouâre hurt my Darling,â Catherine indicated the blood.
âNot mine,â Cornelia answered, as she shakily took a sip of the tea.
âHis?â Susan ventured, as Cornelia slowly nodded, and focused on the far wall behind the two concerned women.
âTheyâre all gone. Arenât they?â She whispered.
âIâm afraid so,â Susan said. âThen weâve got to tell the world,â Cornelia decided.
âWeâve got to make sure that the Phans know. Soon itâll spread word of mouth, internet to internet connection. This isnât happy news,â Catherine decided.
âNo it isnât,â Cornelia pursed her lips and headed for Twitter first.
This would be the beginning of a whole new line of work. A work that two young men had started as a hobby; and three women would carry on. Though it wouldnât be the exact same. They would make an effort, in memory of two nerds, who had dared to share their lives with the world.
Epilogue 2 years later:
âWell thatâs about it. As far as I know weâll be broadcasting on YouNow Thursdays and Tuesdays. Just as usual. Weâre here for questions and answers, and of course Catherine and Susan will be doing their recipe-off. You know the one where they compete about who has the best recipe for the same meal,â Cornelia smiled into the camera.
She would do these ones alone, and then Tuesday she would trek to Susanâs house and they would go through recipes, and then on Thursday, they would FaceTime with Catherine and then would come the ultimate âBake Offâ on YouNow, as the recipes were tested.
âFor all of you loyal viewers out there weâve got a poll on Twitter that you can cast your votes at. Goodbye My Little Swedish Meatballs!â Cornelia waved and blew a kiss at the camera.
She shut it off, and using Danâs and Philâs instructions, edited the video, then uploaded it. She took a small walk around the new flat. She couldnât bear to be in hers and Martynâs old flat, so sheâd rented out a smaller flat. She took down a picture from the mantle and kissed it. She still loved him.
Just then a small bark caught her attention and a tiny Maltese yipped at her again.
âCome along Martie, I suspect youâre hungry,â Cornelia cradled the small dog in her arms and padded to the kitchen.
Things hadnât gotten any easier. Bearable? Yes. Easier? No. She still missed him, missed them. But life still went on.
The End.
Lucky To Have Found You.
Summary: Nigel Lester finds his soulmate, in quirky Kathryn Smythe. Sheâs odd, outgoing, kind, sweet, intelligentâŠ. Everything a dream girl should be. This is my take on Nigel and Kathrynâs romance. **
Pre children, during Kathryn and Nigelâs first schooling. Theyâre about eight years old. They meet on the playground:
It all started back in school, either primary or secondary. Thirty-five years later, Nigel couldnât exactly recall the details, but he sure remembered how theyâd metâŠ.
Nigel was sat on the monkeybars sitting on top, surveying the kids running about. Suddenly, a little girl with long brown hair with blonde streaks through it, dangled upside down and looked over at Nigelâs feet.
âI like your trainers, mine have sparklies,â Â the little girl pointed at her own pair.
âThey are nice,â Nigel quietly rejoined.
âNice? They cost my mum a lot of quid. Thatâs what she complained to Dad about, when I grow up, Iâll never complain. Iâll have a good house a very nice husband and a houseful of babies,â she sounded so sure of herself as she righted her body and sat next to Nigel.
âIâm Kathryn; my Daddy calls me âKitty-Katâ; Mummy calls me Kath, and my brothers call me, âpain in the arseâ. I have two! Brothers not arses,â she put her hand to her mouth, and giggled behind it.
âIâm Nigel, my mummyâs name is Dorothy. Sheâs psychic,â Nigel said.
âReally?! Thatâs so neat! Letâs be friends,â Kathryn decided.
âOkay,â Nigel said as they shook hands.
The Years Went ByâŠ.
Nigel and Kathryn a.k.a. Kath, were the best of friends. Â They dated other people, Â but when the relationships ultimately ended, they ended up in each otherâs flats eating ice cream and watching sad films.
One day:
âLetâs just date each other,â Kathryn said, after a horrific blind date.
âAre you certain?â Nigel asked, as he came into the lounge carrying a tray of food and drinks.
âWhy not? Friends to Lovers; isnât that the way itâs supposed to go?â Kathryn asked.
âI dunno,â Nigel shrugged, as he sat beside her putting the duvet over her legs.
âIâm single, youâre newly single again. Why the hell not?â Nigel ventured.
âNothing ventured, nothing gained,â Kathryn quoted, and snuggled against him, testing new boundaries. Cautiously Nigel, reached out and held her hand.
âYouâre a sweetheart Nige,â Kathryn spoke up.
âThank you,â Nigel softly kissed her temple. They continued watching the film.
It was almost a natural thing. It felt right, comfortable.
âMum said that youâd fit right in with us,â Nigel started.
âGood, I like your mum,â Kathryn answered.
âI like your mum too,â Nigel confessed.
âThen itâs settled,â Kathryn spoke again.
But It was Not All Sunshine and Peaches:
âWhat dâyou mean youâre going to a different Uni?â Kathryn threw a dish towel at Nigelâs head.
He ducked and spoke, âIâll not be too far. Three hours from your uni,â Nigel tried to calm her down. But she seemed to calm down on her own. She flung her arms around his neck, and almost crushed him to death in a tight hug.
He loved her and her enthusiasm.
Thatâs right, and Iâll write you and ring you,â Nigel offered, disentangling himself from her grasp, but kissing her lips.
âNo worries Love?â Nigel whispered.
âIF you find another girl, Iâll never forgive you!â Kathryn answered.
âAnd give you up? Not for all the tea in China,â Nigel promised.
âGood,â Kathryn settled into the crook of his arms.
âI love you,â Nigel blurted out.
âI know,â Kathryn smiled up at him.
(Almost) three years later:
Having finished Uni, the two (still in) love birds found a tiny flat to move into.
âI love it,â Kathryn said.
âIâm glad, now that Iâve the newspaper job, we can afford this place,â Nigel answered.
âIâll keep it tidy,â Kathryn decided.
So it was agreed, mutually, Kathryn stayed put and Nigel worked out in the world.
The Amusement Park:
Nigel felt for the velvet box, and curled his fingers around it, slipping it into his front pocket.
âWhere Are We Going Again Love?!â Kathryn called down the hallway, rousing Nigel from his inner thoughts.
âItâs A Surprise, But I Think Youâll Like It!â Nigel raised his voice a bit to be heard properly.
âAnd Donât Dress Formal?â Kathryn asked.
âNo Darling!â Nigel assured her with a hint of amusement in his voice.
âI trust your judgement,â Kathryn  said, as she and Nigel met in the tiny passage.
He reassured her with a slight kiss and held her petite hand, he caressed her bare ring finger as well, then he kissed it.
She smiled sweetly at him, and soon they were off to begin their date, adventure. They arrived at the amusement park, and Kathryn gasped.
âOh! Iâve been wanting to ride!â She clapped her hands.
âI know,â Nigel whispered in her ear.
âLetâs go!â She pulled him up to the ticket sellerâs window, They bought two tickets.
âWhere shall we go first?â Nigel mused.
âScariest rides first ferris wheel last, I want to get stuck on the top and get a look at the lay of the land,â Kathryn decided.
âOkay,â Nigel agreed.
The Ferris Wheel would be the perfect spot to propose.
âAre you alright? Youâre extra quiet,â Kathryn observed.
âOh just an article Iâm working on,â Nigel answered. Kathryn shrugged but asked nothing further of him.
They went on the roller coasters first, then finally, the Ferris Wheel.
âI think itâs almost big enough to be the London eye,â Kathryn said, as they were safely tucked in one of the swinging cars, and she leaned on his shoulder.
âDo you? Itâs so open, the stars are gorgeous like you. Which group of stars do you want?â Nigel asked.
âThe ones to the left,â Kathryn pointed.
âAnd straight on til morning,â Nigel guessed.
âOnly with you next to me,â Kathryn nudged him, and murmured against him. They kissed.
Nigel felt around for the velvet box, and pulled it out.
âKath?â Nigel nervously spoke up.
âYes?â Kathryn focused on Nigel.
âKathryn Martyna Smythe, will youâŠ.â Nigel paused and opened the box as their car âgot stuckâ on the top.
âMarry me?â Nigel finally got out of his mouth.
And then Kathryn burst into tears.
âIs that a maybe?â Nigel asked, he was confused by the lack of words, one of which should have been a âyesâ.
âNigel John Lester, Iâd be honoured to be your wife,â Kathryn finally turned back to face him, swiping at her face.
Nigel handed her a handkerchief and wiped her face free of tears, he hugged her fiercely and placed the ring on her finger. She held the ring up and it reflected the moonlight.
âI love it, I love you,â Kathryn managed.
âIâm pleased,â Nigel answered, and the ride finished and then it was time to start for home.
âLetâs go celebrate with a night in,â Kathryn suggested.
âIâm for it,â Nigel acknowledged.
The Phone Calls:
Ringing oneâs parents is usually nerve wracking. But when it came to the Lester-Smythe households, was actually pretty simple. Kathryn gushed out the news, and Nigel could hear the screams of excitement. Â Nigel grinned.
When it was Dorothy and Johnâs TurnâŠ.
âMum? Dad? Nigel started.
âHave you proposed already; or is it tomorrow? I told your father I had a vision!â Dorothy excitedly said.
âI just proposed,â Nigel said, as he grinned.
âI knew it! Didnât I know it Johnny?â Dorothy trilled.
âYeah, I heard about twelve times and like usual you were correct, My Dumpling,â John answered in a loving way.
So the plans commenced. Everyone pitched in and both fathers chipped in the money and things were going swimmingly.
A week before the wedding:
Kathryn was in tears, Nigel was at his parentsâ house and she held onto the receiver for dear life.
It was just a nightmare Kathy-Love,â Nigel tried to console his bride to be.
âIt was Terrible! And then I had toâŠ.â The rest of her sentence was cut off as Nigel made soothing noises at her.
âBless you Nigel,â Kathryn hiccoughed.
âWeâre in this together Love. You and I,â Nigel said wishing he could hold her to him.
âSo you do still want to marry me?â Kathryn asked.
âOf course I do,â Nigel assured her.
âI love you to bits and pieces,â She reaffirmed.
âBack at you my sweet,â Nigel answered.
âOne week,â Kathryn sighed.
Well worth the wait,â Nigel calmly said.
âI know,â Kathryn acknowledged.
âMy Love,â Nigel soothed again.
âIâll go now,â Kathryn said.
âDream of me,â Nigel returned.
âIt will be the sweetest dream,â Kathryn answered.
Itâd better be; Goodnight Sweetheart,â Nigel said.
âGoodnight Nigel,â Kathryn answered, as they hung up.
The Day of The Wedding:
Kathryn checked and rechecked her dress, readjusted her veil, she sighed. She had a fluttering traveling from her stomach to heart and vice versa. She took deep calming breaths.
âYou look absolutely breathtaking!â Dorothy said, as she practically floated into the room, standing in the spot previously filled by Kathrynâs  mother.
âThank you Dorothy,â Kathryn blinked back tears.
âThe butterflies are natural, if it makes you feel any better, Nigel needed tissues,â Dorothy paused for breath.
The women hugged.
âYouâre good for him,â Dorothy assured her.
The ceremony:
Their vows said, and they kissed. Really kissed, deeply and with their eyes closed. Nigel made sure that Kathryn felt that kiss all the way down her spine, and to her toes. Kathryn didnât want the kiss to end. Â But end it had to. Theyâd save up for the hotel room.
Clapping and cheering from the Smythe side, and a couple of whistles from Dorothy.
âMummm,â Nigel mock groaned.
They honeymooned on, the Isle of Man. It was lovely, they had carteblanche breakfasts, a leisurely stroll amongst the waves. It was pure heaven.
A Bundle of Joy(?)
âKath?â Nigel asked, a worried tone seeping into his voice.
âNigel?â Kathryn returned.
âWhat is it Love?â Nigel was even more worried.
âI need you to go to Tescoâs,â Kathryn peeked her (now) pale face around the cracked open door.
âWhat? Iâll get whatever you need,â Nigel reached out and stroked her cheek.
âA pregnancy test; your mum had a certain feeling,â Kathryn nervously licked her lips.
âAnd now youâre ill?â Nigel pieced it together.
âQuite astonishing  how accurate she is. Will you go my Darling?â She asked, he nodded in turn.
They briefly kissed, he straightened his tie and went out. A baby. Well that was fine. He had a great job. Kath and he wanted one or two at the very least.
He got back home in record time. She was still indisposed inside the room. He knocked on the closed door, and a hand reached out for the white nondescript box.
An hour laterâŠ.
âNigel?â Her shaky voice brought Nigel to her.
âYes my Love?â He questioned through the door.
She opened the door, and took his shirt collar in her hand, pulling him inside. Â Though Kathryn still looked ill, her eyes were sparkling.
âWeâre going to be parents,â Kathryn announced, not one to dance about an issue.
âI hope itâs a boy! I want two boys!â Kathryn chirped.
âAs long as theyâre healthy and happy,â Nigel answered.
âHe will be,â Kathryn sounded so sure.
âGood,â Nigel had full trust in his bride, that trust would carry him through the whole of their marriage.
Nine Months Later:
âMartyn Nigel John Lester, welcome to the world,â Kathryn kissed the top of the babyâs brownish red hair.
Nigel proudly looked on.
The End.
Birthday In London
Summary: Itâs Catherine Lesterâs birthday, and where does she go? To see her
children of course. Cornelia, Martyn, Phil, and of course Daniel. As always, Catherine is sharp eyed and ready for whatever the day has in store. Follow her, and Nigel as they visit their children.
Author Note: I have a headcanon that Catherine is pretty much a protective mum, and she pretty much organises how things are to go, and everyone just sort of follows whatever she suggests. She is pretty organised in the fact that she has folders. I mean where else would Phil get the idea to have folders when he travels? So as much as I donât think Catherine is this way in real life, I have a lot of fun with my headcanon.
Warnings: Lots of âDan Swearingâ, some âMartynâ joking, and lovey-dovey-ness from both couples (i.e. Martyn/Cornelia & Catherine/Nigel.
Family/Friendship/humour. Lots of humour.
I normally donât ship Dan and Phil, so donât expect to see them shipped as much from me. I do have a couple of stories where theyâre together. But theyâre few and far between. I like to see them as best friends. But thatâs just my opinion and I have nothing against the âPhanniesâ. Â Also I imagine that as a family unit theyâre loud and boisterous and that the four of them (Martyn, Phil, Cornelia, and Dan) are like actual siblings, loud, and joking and just being siblings. And I think that Catherine just looks fondly at them all when theyâre all six assembled.
Rating: PG-R (For swearing. Sorry Dan, but you do swear and yell.)
London (the new flat):
Catherine nodded to Nigel. âWell weâre here,â she said.
âIndeed we are; seems like a nice  place,â Nigel answered.
âWe should let them know weâve arrived,â Catherine decided.
âText?â Nigel asked.
âHeavens yes, knowing the boys theyâll be staring at their phones inbetwixt tidying for our arrival,â Catherine answered.
She texted as Nigel patiently tapped his foot.
âI can imagine that Philâs all in a tither, and Dan is doing absolutely nothing, but revelling in the fact, that Philâs going mad trying to tidy for us,â Nigel smiled.
There was a bing, and Catherine read the message. Â She smiled. Phil appeared at the door momentarily, and he stuck his head round the door jamb.
âMum! Dad! I was just doing a bit of tidying up,â Phil seemed to need to catch his breath.
âI seeâŠ.â Catherine smiled as they followed Phil inside.
âWhereâs Dan?â Nigel asked.
âHeâs probably on the sofa, in his roomâŠ.I dunno,â Phil shrugged.
They arrived in the main living area.
âOh my goodness!â Catherine said as Dan appeared and he was smiling beatifically at them. The absolute picture of modesty and grace.
âAhhh there you are!â Catherine hugged Dan.
âHere I am, and here you areâŠ.Hello Nigel,â Dan said, between Catherineâs arms, as he was still being hugged.
âMUM!â Phil whined.
âOh yes, and my other son! How are you my Darling?â Catherine grabbed Phil into a hug, as Nigel helped Dan straighten his shirt, and the two shook hands on greeting.
âWould you like anything to drink?â Dan managed. He was always breathless from one of Catherineâs exuberant hugs.
âYouâre such a good host! Phil, why arenât you a good host like Dan?â Catherine jokingly chided, as Phil stuck his tongue out at Dan, who returned the gesture.
He wouldâve added another gesture, but it was far too impolite, and he was nothing if not extremely, polite around the Lesters.
âThis place is gorgeous! Not a speck of dustâŠ.Where are the houseplants though?â Catherine asked.
âIâll show you in a bit,â Phil said, as the three sat down.
âSooo drinks?â Dan asked, ready for the if only momentary, escape.
Nigel and Catherine said what they wanted, and then Phil had the cheeky gall to âorderâ as well.
âComing along,â Dan said, and then whispered âbitchâ under his breath, to where only Phil could hear it. Phil just gave him a cheeky smile.
âAnyway, so what are you up to?â Catherine asked.
âMum itâs your birthday. Youâre going to be treated like royalty,â Phil protested.
It was usually Catherine who took over the fussing and the planning and the pampering. But on her birthday, everyone helped out. They loved Catherine; and she loved them immensely. She regarded Dan as her âthird sonâ.
They chatted as Dan set down the tray of the steaming drinks.
Thanking him as he doled them out. He sat down with his own drink, and then all four were chatting. About the weather, the plane ride. Comfortable, relaxed, familial.
Then, âWeâre Here! Are Mum and Dad Here?!â A loud voice called up the stairs.
âOf course they are Martyn! They like me and Dan, Dan and I, better than you,â Phil joked as Martyn and Cornelia came into view.
Cornelia took her hand from Martynâs and skipped over to Catherine. The two women hugged. They lived for each otherâs company. They were the only two females, in the rambunctiousness of the men. They didnât mind. They loved it. They knew they were all glued together.
Though two werenât family by blood, they just were. A family. A cheeky, loud family. A family that loved their matriarch very much. It was Catherineâs own three days. They would outdo themselves, almost trip over themselves, pampering her. Showing that they loved her in their own ways.
âIâve got you a surpriseâŠ.Well Martyn and I did,â Cornelia whispered in Catherineâs ear.
âOh?â Catherine asked.
âYes, but itâll have to be given to you tomorrow when you all come to brunch at our new flat,â Cornelia nodded.
She smiled over at Martyn. He and Nigel were engrossed in an age old argument about footballers, and rugby and any kind of sport they could think of.
âWe were at Wimbledon,â Phil blurted out.
âI know, I saw you and Dan in the crowd before Cornelia did, and sheâs got the eyes of a sexy eagle. Donât you Nikk?â He winked over at his girlfriend.
She winked back.
âUhh! Stop perving on my sister!â Phil protested.
âSheâs not your sister. Weâre brothers. Remember?â Martyn rubbed his knuckles across Philâs head.
âWhat was that move called?â Phil asked.
âMy American friends called it a ânoogieâ. Dunno why. It sounded sensual,â Martyn answered.
âStop making your brother frown,â Catherine was in âmum modeâ.
âSorry Mum,â Martyn apologised. Â
âSo whilst weâre here, what are we doing?â Catherineâs eyes sparkled, as all four looked at each other, then back towards she and Nigel.
âOh, you know, birthday stuff,â Phil shrugged, as the other three nodded.
âYepâŠ.Definitely birthday stuff,â Dan echoed.
âUh-huh,â Martyn nodded.
âItâll be the time of your life though,â Cornelia assuaged any fears.
âWhatever youâd like to do,â Nigel said.
âOhhhâŠ.London is such a big place. Iâm always awestruck whenever Iâm here, overwhelmed and the like. So many things to do. Museum?â Catherine thought out.
The four exchanged glances. They already knew. Nigel had helped them plan. But they were waiting to see if Catherine would somehow âguessâ at what theyâd âdoneâ.
âMuseums are nice,â Martyn spoke up.
âA play?â Catherine asked.
âDefinitely could go see one,â Phil answered.
âA film?â Catherine asked again.
âFilms are really nice. I could pick out the seats. As long as nobody sits in them. Then Iâll fight them,â Dan spoke up. Phil gave Dan a frown.
âOkay I wouldnât fight them, but Iâd think about fighting them!â Dan said.
Nigel and Catherine exchanged parental glances this time. Dan was their scrapper.
âAnything else?â Cornelia asked.
âI donât know, Iâll have to see,â Catherine seemed flustered, but really she wasnât. She loved being in this environment, but she especially loved being with her children. It made her feel all warm and fuzzy on the inside when she was with them.
They could be stranded in an igloo, and she wouldnât have minded, as long as Nigel, Martyn, Phil, Cornelia, and Dan were there. She would have been happy.
âI think those are good for starters. The play, the film the museum,â Catherine answered.
âIf I think of something else, Iâll let you know,â she continued.
âAbsolutely,â Nigel said, and squeezed her hand. She smiled up at him.
Nigel was her support, and the love of her life. Without himâŠ.She shook her head. âBirthday thoughtsâ, she mentally told herself.
âJust think happy thoughts,â she murmured.
âMum?â Phil asked, a worried crease in his brow.
âNothing Sweetie, Iâm just having a think,â Catherine waved off the worry.
âOkay?â Phil, Dan, Martyn and Cornelia exchanged a few glances, but ended up shrugging.
They finished their drinks, Dan tidied up, and soon they were talking about going out.
âWhere to my love?â Nigel asked.
âOh, to that posh fish and chips shop? The one I like so much?â Catherine asked.
âSo traditional,â Dan sarcastically spoke up. Sarcasm was a part of his speech.
Catherine was used to it.
âStop being sarcastic Dan,â Phil pleaded.
âHe canât help it,â Cornelia put in.
âItâs like a part of him,â Martyn offered.
âSorry!â Dan tried to concentrate on his âbeing nice for the familyâ persona.
âRight, ummmâŠ.To the chip shop!â Dan was compensating for the sarcastic remark.
âSounds good to me. Weâll need a car,â Catherine said.
âOn it,â Nigel rang for a taxi.
âYouâre too good to me,â Catherine smiled.
âCatherine youâre good to us, and honestly we like doing things for you. Youâre usually the planner; making sure everyoneâs okay. Doing the âextra thingsâ. We need to pamper you. We like spoiling you,â Nigel said, as he looked at the younger adults in a meaningful way.
âRight, and we appreciate you Mum,â Martyn started.
âMore than anything do we appreciate you; your love and support are tremendous,â Cornelia chimed in.
âAnd you gave birth to me, even though Iâm not a bandicoot,â Phil offered.
Dan put a hand over Philâs mouth, âAnd you take us all as we are and donât expect us to change a bit.â
Catherine smiled and put a hand over her heart.
âOh you lot!â She said in a wavering tone.
âDonât do it Cath, donât cry. Youâre here to have fun, and not dwell on sentiments. Right Lads and Lass?â Nigel asked.
âRight-o!â Martyn said in a cheeky voice and kissed one side of his mumâs cheeks.
âAnd weâll make sure you do,â Phil said, kissing the other cheek.
âAll the way,â Nigel answered, kissing  her open palm.
âEvery single minute,â Dan squeezed her shoulder.
âWe love you,â Cornelia said, and squeezed her other shoulder.
âYouâll make the tears worse,â Catherine sniffed, but she reined the tears in. Â
âStop, stop, stop!â Dan had a hand over his heart and his other hand was raised. His eyes were closed.
âWhat is it?â Phil asked.
âToo many feels,â Dan answered. Phil rolled his eyes.
âItâs my birthday, Iâll have emotions if I like,â Catherine smiled at Dan.
Dan opened his eyes, and grinned.
âYouâre cheeky,â Catherine smiled and the taxi arrived.
âChip shop ahoy!â Phil exulted.
âI love Fish!â Martyn said.
âChips when theyâre crispy and hot are the best,â Cornelia chimed in.
âYouâre hot and crispy,â Martyn said, and they gave each other a lovey dovey smile.
âPlease!!â Dan and Phil looked horrified.
âYouâll understand when youâre in love again,â Catherine said.
âAre you shipping us?â Dan asked.
âIs she shipping us?â Phil whispered to Dan.
âYour mum didnât mean it like that,â Nigel interrupted.
They gave directions to the driver, and soon they were speeding off to the posh fish and chips shop.
âWhat play would you like to see?â Dan asked the real questions.
âWhatâs playing?â Catherine asked. Phil pulled out something from his folder.
âLetâs see, Hamilton, Wicked, Les MiserablesâŠ.â Phil read from the paper.
âWicked? Iâve heard itâs a new take on the Wizard of Oz?â Catherine furrowed her brows.
âYeah itâs the origin story on the Wicked Witch of the West,â Martyn said.
âSpoilers!!â Dan and Phil yelped, Dan covered his ears, and gave Martyn a pained look. Martyn shrugged in return.
âStop teasing them Martyn,â Catherine sighed.
âWhy? Theyâre my brothers, I can tease them if I want to,â Martyn insisted, as Cornelia laid a hand on his arm.
âIâm adopted,â Dan huffed.
âSo you are. But youâre still family,â Cornelia said.
âYouâre adopted too,â Dan said.
âSheâs gonna be adopted forever. Itâs been eight years, Iâm not letting this one go,â Martyn said, and held her close to him. Both were just as enamored with each other as they had been when theyâd lit the flame.
âSo sweet,â Catherine said, as they arrived at the fish and chips shoppe.
âAlright, behave,â Catherine said, as she put a finger to her lips.
âIâm always behaving,â Martyn said.
âWellâŠ.ActuallyâŠ.â Phil interrupted.
âHold on!â Cornelia said.
âIf this is a contest, I win,â Dan said.
âChildren,â Nigel rolled his eyes. Catherine started chuckling.
âAlright you lot, enough,â Nigel tried to get the chattering under control.
They really did act like siblings. Catherine was enjoying herself, as she ordered, and then the rest ordered as well. Â They sat down in a booth. Dan and Phil were seated next to each other towards the middle, and Cornelia and Martyn book ended them. Then Catherine and Nigel were sat in two chairs opposite the four, and as they waited for their orders, they discussed where to go next.
âIâd like to see the Wicked production,â Catherine decided.
They all nodded their heads. When the waiter got to them, Nigel whispered in his ear, âItâs my wifeâs birthday.â
The waiter smiled, and he nodded.
âWhat have you done Nigel?â Catherine asked.
âCalled in a favour,â Nigel smiled sweetly at his wife.
âYouâre incorrigible," Catherine declared. âYou canât take all the credit for the way the youngsters behave,â Nigel winked at her.
Catherine merely smiled back at him. Her eyes were sparkling though.
âMum and Dad are being love sick again!â Martyn opined.
âStop the world, I want to get off,â Phil chimed in.
âThe Horror!â Cornelia smirked.
âThe Feels!â Dan said. Catherine gave Nigel a long suffering look.
âYouâre the one who wanted another boy. I said, âLetâs stop adopting at Cornelia. Sheâs the girl we never hadâ. But noooo you adopted Dan. So, now we have to keep him,â Nigel grinned, as the two exchanged glances once more.
âWhat can I say? I like his dimples,â Catherine whispered.
âAre you talking about me? I have a feeling theyâre talking about me. Why must you pick on the awkward, nerdy, introvert?â Dan complained.
âBecause youâre the youngest,â Cornelia said.
âWell youâre the oldest,â Dan argued.
âDan!â Phil squeaked out.
âIâll let my lady, handle herself,â Martyn sat back to watch the fireworks.
âThatâs the best you can do Daniel?â Cornelia quirked an eyebrow at him.
âNo, but youâd beat me to a pulp. You took lessons,â Dan retorted.
âDarn right I did,â Cornelia crossed her arms. She eyed the three of them to see if they would say something lippy.
âSorry Cornelia,â Phil quietly apologised.
Cornelia let a smile through, though she kept an eye on Dan. âHow about going to see the film Dunkirk?â Phil changed the subject, just as their food arrived.
They all dug in, and as soon as they were finished Catherine picked up the conversation from where theyâd left off, âDunkirk sounds like a wonderful film; even if itâs about the war. Iâm sure it will be a lovely film.â Catherine smiled demurely at them all.
Just then, âHappy Birthday toooo you!!!!â The waiters came out with a cake and sparklers instead of candles.
âOh my!â Catherine put her hand over her heart.
âSurprise Cath,â Nigel whispered in her ear.
âThan-Thank you,â Catherine managed.
She was moved by all the kind gestures. Â
âSheâs going to cry again,â Phil said, as he wrung his hands in a nervous gesture.
âShe wonât. Sheâs just happy,â Cornelia assured him.
Dan patted Philâs shoulder in a comforting gesture, and even Martyn reached over and ruffled Philâs hair.
âStop that, I need the fringe,â Phil pouted.
âOh you poor boy,â Martyn ruffled it even more.
âMart!â Phil yelped.
âBoys,â Nigel said, and that was all that was needed.
âRight, itâs Mumâs three days,â Phil nodded, and shoved Dan.
âWhatâd you do that for?â Dan shoved him back.
âBecause youâre easier to reach than Martyn is,â Phil smirked.
âLet me do the honours,â Cornelia said, and shoved Martynâs shoulder in Philâs defence. Phil smirked in Martynâs direction.
âThe nightâs not over little bro,â Martyn retorted.
âIâm finally taller than you though. So I could probably sit on you,â Phil sized his brother up.
âOh? You think itâll be that easy?â Martyn returned.
âPut them away,â Cornelia spoke up.
âPut what away?â Phil looked genuinely confused.
âIâll explain when youâre older,â Dan joked.
âWeâre going to see a film, and you two will behave,â Catherine eyed Martyn and Phil in a motherly way; the two hung their heads, but side glanced at each other, much to the amusement of Cornelia and Dan.
Cornelia and Dan shook hands under the table. Soon they were eating and then they had slivers of cake. Then it was off to the cinema. Catherine held Nigelâs hand and the six entered.
âPopcorn!â Phil said, and fidgeted with excitement.
âDonât ask for extra butter,â Dan piped up.
âThat was in America. I wonât make the same mistake twice,â Phil nodded in agreement.
âWhat about Swedish Fish,â Phil mused.
âUgh! They taste like dust and cardboard,â Dan said.
âWell get Maltesers,â Phil suggested.
âThatâs not part of my rebranding,â Dan said.
âOh DanielâŠ.â Phil bit out.
âShut up,â Dan pushed him.
Cornelia and Martyn ordered a small tub of popcorn, large drinks and some M&Mâs. Then they stood to the side and Dan and Phil debated over snacks.
âMars Bar,â Dan finally decided, Cornelia slow clapped.
âFinally!â Martyn said.
âLeave him alone,â Phil and Catherine spoke up.
âOuch!â Martyn quieted down.
âI feel like Iâm taking zoo animals out in public,â Nigel muttered.
âHey!!!!â Four voices answered in kind, and bit of hurt.
âNigelâŠ.â Catherine led them all to the appointed place.
Their tickets got torn to enter, and then they settled in. They were the only ones there at first.
âIf some kids sit in front of me and are rude, I am not responsible for my actions,â Dan said, as they found their seats heâd found online.
âControl yourself for Mum,â Phil pleaded.
âI will fight anyone whoâs rude,â Dan answered.
âOh lord,â Cornelia said, as she and Martyn sat near the aisle.
Nigel and Catherine were two seats away from the couple. Dan and Phil were sat towards the middle.
âEven if itâs an old lady?â Phil asked.
âNo, because sheâd be an octogenarian and probably her mindâs going,â Dan said.
âWell thatâs a relief,â Phil sighed.
âBut, if anyone with a loud crisp packet, or if anyone sends any popcorn flying and it lands on me, I will give a strongly worded âShut The Fuck Upâ,â Dan replied.
âPlease donât say the eff word,â Phil pleaded.
âFuck,â Dan answered.
A piece of popcorn landed in Danâs lap. Dan gave a finger to Martyn. Phil buried his face in his hands.
âNo! Not the previews!â Dan covered his ears. Phil followed suit.
âFor heavenâs sake,â Cornelia sighed.
âIâm so telling them all the previews,â Martyn chuckled.
âThey signed a no spoilers pact,â Nigel said.
âI know, I was the one who drew up the draft,â Martyn answered.
âWere the signatures in blood?â Catherine was curious.
âNo, red Sharpie,â Martyn answered.
âSo it looked like blood. Those two are very imaginative,â Catherine said.
âYouâre the one who had Phil. If it had been up to me, Iâd have been an only child,â Martyn offered.
âIf Phil wasnât here, Iâd never know Dan,â Catherine was slightly upset again.
âMum I didnât mean it!â Martyn was quick to apologise.
âWhat did you do Martyn?â Phil hissed at him, as he slowly put a hand down, seeing as the previews were almost at an end.
âNothing,â Martyn answered.
âStop yelling across,â Dan said, as he lowered his hands from his ears.
âSo in one of the upcoming featuresâŠ.â Martyn started.
âNo!!â Dan and Phil covered their ears again. Martyn smirked.
âAss!â Dan yelped.
âYeah what Dan just said,â Phil responded.
âLanguage!!â Nigel and Catherine spoke in unison.
âShush! The filmâs starting,â Cornelia put a finger to her lips, and they all settled down.
Three hours later:
âHow was it?â Phil worried. His parents had seemed a little sad.
âWell your grandfather was in the war; I reckon it reminded me a bit of the stories he used to tell,â Catherine said.
âThey werenât nice stories either,â Nigel answered.
âI see,â Phil said.
âBut it was a beautiful adaptation of a tragedy,â Catherine offered. Phil perked up a bit.
âYou think so?â Phil asked.
âOf course,â Nigel returned. They got a late night dessert.
âYouâre spending the night with Dan and Phil, and then youâre spending the next two days with us,â Martyn said.
âRight, and then brunch is tomorrow as well,â Cornelia eyed the youngest members of the family.
âDonât look at me like that. Weâll be at brunch,â Dan said.
âIâll make sure weâre not too late. Heâs the one who wonât get started at the beginning,â Phil said.
âDonât say things like that in front of your mum,â Dan begged.
âShut up,â Phil said. Â âIf you two keep acting like juveniles, Iâm taking away your computers and sending you to bed early,â Catherine interrupted the bantering.
âMum wins,â Phil scrunched up his nose.
âMum always wins,â Martyn smirked.
âGoodnight you two,â Nigel hugged Cornelia and Martyn, and there were two cars called.
âGânight you lot,â Martyn said. Cornelia hugged everyone as well.
When the cars arrived, they all went their separate ways.
âSo your room is down a flight of stairs?â Catherine said.
âYeah and Danâs is on top,â Phil said.
âThat sounded so not right,â Dan said.
âNothing I say sounds right, or socially acceptable. You should be used to that by now,â Phil retorted.
âWeâve got a guest room next to the kitchen,â Dan said, and put their things in it.
âYouâre so helpful,â Catherine resisted the urge to hug him again. He could only take so much hugging in one day.
âIf you need anythingâŠ.â Phil offered.
âIâm sure weâll let you know. Especially since youâll still be awake when your mother and I are sleeping,â Nigel answered.
âTheyâre night owls; donât tease them,â Catherine gently chided, nudging Nigelâs side.
âWeâre off to sleep. Keep the noise to a modicum of decency,â Nigel looked at Dan.
âI donât scream all the time,â Dan protested.
âDonât you? If youâre planning on recording a video, or playing a videogame with Phil, tell me now, so Iâll be sure to put a pillow over my head to drown out the noise,â Nigel semi-joked.
âHa-ha,â Dan sighed.
âWell you do have a tendency to break the sound barrier,â Phil put in.
âYouâre supposed to be on my side! And weâve been through what the sound barrier is for the millionth time,â Dan protested.
âOut, out, out,â Catherine shooed the two out of the room.
âAlright Mum, goodnight you two,â Phil said.
âGoodnight Catherine, ânight Nigel,â Dan said and the two were gone.
âTheyâre a handful,â Catherine got ready for sleep.
âWell theyâre interesting; thereâs no doubt about that,â Nigel tucked himself in, and Catherine slid in beside him.
âBut I wouldnât trade this for all the worldâs riches,â Catherine said, plumping her pillow a bit and then closing her eyes. âNeither would I,â Nigel whispered. He too closed his eyes.
The next morning:
Catherine and Nigel were awake and enjoying a cup of coffee each. Dan and Phil were nowhere to be seen.
âShould we wake them?â Nigel asked.
âHeavens no, let the dear boys sleep,â Catherine answered.
âI could hear rustling in the kitchen last night,â Nigel started.
âPhil most probably scrounging for something to eat,â Catherine nodded as she took another sip of coffee.
âHmmm,â Nigel nodded. Just then two young men stumbled into the kitchen. They were both rubbing at their eyes trying to wake up.
âCoffeeeeeâŠ.â Phil mumbled.
âI need to live!â Dan squeaked out.
âThe coffeeâs made,â Nigel spoke, startling the two.
âWoah! I was not expecting you two to be here,â Dan put a hand over his heart.
âWell weâre early risers. Unlike the two of you,â Nigel smiled.
âWeâve got brunch in an hour,â Phil panicked.
âJesus! I have to get ready. Itâs gonna take me like three hours,â Dan ambled off, coffee in hand to his room.
âHi Mum, Hi Dad,â Phil sat up at the table with his own coffee, and sipped.
âSo weâre waiting for Daniel then?â Nigel asked.
âStory of my life,â Phil nodded and sipped some more.
âHow often is he late?â Nigel asked.
âEvery day,â Phil sighed.
âWeâll be here for a while yet,â Catherine and Nigel were already dressed for the day.
âIâll get dressed. Give me ten minutes,â Phil ambled off to his downstairs room.
Just then Nigelâs phone rang. âHello?â Nigel greeted.
âDad are you heading here yet?â Martyn enquired.
âNot yet. Weâre waiting for the youngests,â Nigel sighed.
âDan is going to take some convincingâŠ.Iâll call you back!â Martyn hung up.
âMARTYN! Now Is Not The Time!â Danâs voice was heard.
âAre you sure you donât want to run back to the Isle of Man?â Nigel asked.
âAnd miss all this? Are you crazy?â Catherine returned.
âWell I married you didnât I?â Nigel smiled.
âDonât Freak Out Dan!â Phil yelled from his room.
âYour Brotherâs An Idiot!â Dan informed his flatmate.
âYeah I knew that before you knew that,â Phil responded.
âYou know your mother and I can hear you,â Nigel gave the two a gentle reminder. Â
âSorry!â Phil said right away.
âIâm almost ready,â Dan answered by way of apology.
âNo youâre not. Youâre throwing your shi...stuff all over! I can hear you!â Phil objected.
âHear this!â Dan stomped his foot on the floor, which was Philâs ceiling.
âStop it!â Phil said.
âNever!â Dan stomped two feet onto the floor.
âWeâre gonna Miss Brunch!â Nigel reminded them again.
âOh hell,â Dan responded.
âLanguage Daniel!â Phil said.
âI need more coffee,â Nigel refilled his and Catherineâs mugs. Catherine nodded, but she was smiling a little.
Finally they were all out the door. It was a fairly nice day. The birds were actually singing, there werenât any signs of diseased pigeons anywhere, and everyone was dressed semi nicely.
âYouâre wearing white,â Catherine observed Danâs shirt.
âIâve been feeling less black clothing lately,â Dan answered.
âHmmmâŠ.â Catherine nodded.
âAnd Phil?â Nigel looked at Philâs black on black outfit.
âWhat? Itâs a newish thing,â Phil shrugged and fixed his fringe.
âAlright then,â Catherine answered as they stepped into the car and arrived at Martyn and Corneliaâs flat.
Catherine and Nigel had put their things in the taxi as well, since theyâd be staying with the older couple. Cornelia and Martyn greeted them at the door, and waved. Phil paid for the ride, and they all four ambled inside.
Dan and Phil and Nigel all had a piece of luggage, and Catherine was walking behind them.
âYouâre here! Youâre finally here!â Cornelia clapped her hands.
âDan finally decided on an outfit,â Martyn smirked.
âItâs too early for bants. I only had one cup of coffee,â Phil moaned.
âSo did I, and Martyn wouldnât stop texting me every five seconds,â Dan retorted.
âYouâre such a slow turtle,â Martyn responded and he led the way inside the flat.
It was a nice cozy flat. Not as much storage as the maisonette, but it was nice for the two that lived there. They were happy, and it was a newer flat than what they had previously lived in.
âBrunch is ready, plenty of coffee,â Cornelia spread her arm towards the food laid out buffet style.
âMum you go first,â Martyn said.
âThank you Darling, but Iâd rather you lot eat first. I imagine youâre hungry,â Catherine deflected the offer.
âMum, I insist,â Martyn made a show of holding both Dan and Phil away from the food with an arm. Phil playfully pushed against him, and Dan just scowled.
âAlright since youâve put it that way,â Catherine conceded.
SoonâŠ.
They were all sat up at the table now. Enjoying each othersâ company and sipping coffee.
âWeâre off to do something next. Probably a museum. Not Madame Tussaudâs. Itâll be right packed. Maybe the history museum or summat,â Martyn spoke. âThat sounds delightful,â Catherine approved.
âMum approved, and weâll be looking at boring paintings, and then weâll go for an ice cream,â Phil said, as he studied his own itinerary.
âIâm so pleased you took after me, those folders are so adorable,â Catherine spoke up as she noticed what Phil was doing. Phil blushed.
âAnywayâŠ.â Martyn interrupted.
âRight then weâre going to enjoy London, perhaps either go for an ice cream or a milkshake if youâd rather,â Catherine said.
âBoth?â Philâs eyes lit up. Â
âToo much milk will not make you feel well Sweetie,â Catherine shook her head.
âBut I can handle it,â Phil insisted.
âAs your mother, and as itâs my birthday, Iâm going to have to veto that idea straight off,â Catherine answered.
âOkay Mum,â Phil pursed his lips.
At the Museum:
âLook at the colours,â Catherine took a picture with one of her manual cameras.
Meantime flashes went off from other peoplesâ phones. She prefered the old fashioned way.
âAhhh my favourite portrait when we come in hereâŠ.Sheâs so happy,â Catherine gushed.
âHow can you tell? Her lips arenât even making a smiling effort. And she looks hellâa pissed,â Dan said.
âI can tell by the eyes Dear,â Catherine had swung an arm over Danâs shoulder.
âYou can always tell by the eyes who is amused, who hates you, and who would bend over backwards for you. The eyes are the windows to the soul,â Catherine answered.
âWhat if I donât have a soul?â Dan said.
âI can still read you, so youâve a soul somewhere,â Catherine smiled a bit.
âIâm gonna have to hide it away in its box,â Dan said, a decisive tone creeping in.
âAre the eyes the reason I can read Phil so well?â Dan mused.
âProbably. Heâs a very expressive personâŠ.Young man,â Catherine nodded.
âHmmmâŠ.â Dan said nothing more and moved on to the more darker paintings.
âThese speak to me so much!â Dan said as he studied the black and white swirls.
After the museum:
âI do like my milkshakes,â Catherine nodded, as she heard the slurping all around her. They were resting in a local shop. Their dayâs activities being spent.
They were going to go back to Martynâs and Corneliaâs, and then Dan and Phil would leave for the night.
âBoard game?â Catherine offered.
âThat would be fantastic,â Martyn said.
âIâve missed playing games,â Cornelia said.
âI promise not to cheat,â Phil said.
âYeah thatâll be the day,â Dan chided.
They finished and went out of the store hailing a car.
âYouâre sure youâve got enough stamina to play against the likes of us?â Catherine challenged.
âAs a Lester Iâm more than ready,â Martyn answered.
âMe too!â Phil piped up.
âAs one of the adopted Lesters I am also quite ready. You try living with this handsome redheaded sweetheart, and not be ready for anything,â Cornelia said.
âAnd I guess Iâm ready too,â Dan sighed.
âReally Dan? Thatâs all? More enthusiasm, Mate,â Martyn leaned across Phil.
âAwww hell Mate. I can beat you at any board game, any time,â Dan said.
âWanna bet?â Martyn challenged, as they pulled alongside the flat.
âWhy not?â Dan said, and the two shook hands.
âThis is to be a nice game. No bloodshed. No bloodsport,â Catherine spoke up, as Cornelia unlocked the door.
âAwww man!â Martyn sighed.
âI want all of my family to be alive for tomorrowâs festivities. And it being our last day here,â Catherine added.
âWell there goes my plan of attack,â Nigel said and they all sat down.
They got out a board game and a lively session began.
âTomorrow I want to play video-games,â Catherine said.
âWhatever Mum wants, Mum gets,â Phil said.
âIâll destroy you tomorrow Phil,â Dan promised. âIâd like to see you try,â Phil retorted. They both brandished fists at each other.
âBoys!â Nigel sternly said. They settled just enough to finish the game.
The Next Morning:
Martyn was furiously texting and goading Dan at the breakfast table.
âDonât bother. Iâve spoken with Phil theyâre on their way over,â Cornelia made a half-assed attempt to steal the phone from her boyfriend.
But he kept it out of her reach and continued texting. Catherine and Nigel were silently drinking their coffee and nibbling their breakfasts. Finally there was a furious ping and Martyn smiled widely.
âTheyâre here arenât they?â Cornelia asked as Martyn excused himself and he went to answer the door. Dan and Phil entered, and Dan gave Martyn a glare.
âWhat if I wanted to procrastinate today?â Dan asked.
âWell I wouldnât let you. Mum would have made me go over to your flat to wrest you from your safe haven,â Martyn smirked.
âShut up,â Dan said, as he made himself and Phil a mug of coffee. âI do so love the bants in the morning,â Nigel said, as he returned to the newspaper in his hand. âIt wouldnât be very fun if they were well behaved,â Catherine answered.
Later that afternoon:
âWicked, Wicked, Weâre Going To See WICKED!!!!â Phil clapped his hands. Dan reached over and stopped the handclapping. âNo. Just no,â Dan said and they entered the theater. The production was fantastic.
Afterwards and the next morning:
âCan we have a sleepover?â Phil asked.
âI donât see why not. Itâs really late and Mum has to leave in the morning,â Cornelia said, as she looked over at Martyn.
âI wouldnât mind,â Martyn shrugged.
âYouâll have to sleep in the lounge,â Cornelia said.
âMum and Dad have the guest room,â Martyn said.
âFine by me,â Phil yawned. It was going to be an early night anyway. They all went their separate ways and soon everyone was sleeping. Save for the two youngests. They talked all night, until they fell asleep.
Next morningâŠ.
âRise and Shine! Mum and Dad are awake and itâs time to see them off,â Martyn said, shaking the two sleeping figures on the ground.
âWhuh?â Dan rubbed at his eyes.
âHuh? Coffee? Did I hear coffee?â Phil sat up and also rubbed his eyes.
âCoffeeâs brewing,â Cornelia called from the kitchen.
âYAY!â Phil slowly padded towards the kitchen, Dan trailing behind him.
They found Nigel and Catherine at the table again, and soon there were bants, arguments and the like filling the air, and the islands in the midst of it all, calmly ignoring or breaking the worst of the bants. Then it was off to the airport where they all hugged each other until next time.
The End.
