Hey Benito. I'm someone who always uses your Netflix guide to Halloween movies and I've generally enjoyed all recs. I am a person who rarely watches spook films though. If you could would you be willing to make a list of your must see scary movies ever. I know it's a lot to ask but I'd love a big list from you to hunt down and watch this October! Please consider it and thanks
Hello! This is a great question and one that I am excited to answer. I could easily spend the rest of my life answering this question, and so I am going to have to limit myself. While part of my brain wants to categorize the movies by genre or era or movement, I’m going to just arrange them by decade so there’s at least some organization and not just a list of hundreds of titles.
This list will be pretty long, I’ll warn you. I will be doing my best to mix in the essential classics that everyone knows and agrees on with hopefully lesser known movies that might be worth watching not necessarily because they are flawlessly made, but because they are notable for other reasons. I will also try to include more than just American films, since a lot of really notable horror has come out of Italy, Japan, Korea, Spain, and the UK, for example.
That said, even though I watch horror movies all year round and devote a lot of my time to them, I still haven’t seen everything. There are some that are probably someone out there’s favorite that I haven’t seen, or maybe they didn’t pop into my head while I was writing this. I promise the omission of your personal favorite jam is not (necessarily) an intentional slight.
If there is any particular movie or group of movies anyone would like to see me talk more about, drop me a line in my ask box and I will elaborate.
The Cabinet of Dr Caligari
Vampyr: der Traum des Allan Grey
Invasion of the Body Snatchers
The Fall of the House of Usher
Invasion of the Body Snatchers
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
The Bird With the Crystal Plumage
A Nightmare on Elm Street
Return of the Living Dead
American Werewolf in London
Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer
Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon
Okay, I’ve certainly forgotten some, and definitely some great-taste super-genius is going to tell me that X should be on there and not A, B, and C, but hopefully this is enough to get you started ;)
Again, if you have a question about a more specific subset–best Universal horror, best Hammer horror, best American International horror, w/e–just drop me a line and we can look a little closer.
