We challenged each other to write metal while not using the E strings on the guitars. Working under constraints seems to force a lot of innovation... Well, this is noisy and quite wanky but hopefully sounds cool.
Main riff of the final section(after the tapping) is a direct riff on an old composition I heard from a friend. All credit to him, if he sees this~.

I'm basically doing whatever I can to distract myself from another musical project I'm having trouble with. However, this was a good learning experience in how to cover a song's basic structure while arranging it a bit differently... as well as being maybe the most complex composition I've had to deal with.
Lots of credit to people on YouTube and elsewhere who have arranged instrumentals. I didn't follow them all the way through, but they really got me started.

Well, I finally saw this thing, years overdue. Decided I liked the instrumental so much it deserved a cover, which I unwittingly added a bunch of swing to. Imitating an electric piano with a guitar, by ear, is a bit of a task. And instead of a bunch of vocal samples for the verses, I decided to fit in a few guitar solos.
Maybe one day I'll post something semi-serious again. Until then, here's something kind of chilled out and warm at the same time.

It's been a hell of a month. So I settled down to write some vent music and... ended up producing something that isn't even about the past little while. Hell, it's more inspired by a comic than anything. Not to dwell on things overly much, but this is probably the ugliest (deliberately!) thing I've written, though for different reasons depending on which half of the song you're looking at. I felt like shit through around 80% of this and I like to think it shows
I'm pretty proud of the guitar solo, though. Jeez.
Reconceptualizing My Earlier Life as Shotacon (Jazz Disaster)

It's over. This was an absolute chore to compose from start to finish and gave me a new appreciation for why jazz is considered a really complex genre of music to write for. For starters, this was supposed to be done in December of last year. And the less said about my ideas on what constitutes good titles and good album art, the better. That being said, I consider it a bit of a technical achievement that I took it this far.
For one, I think that I avoided having one instrument basically dominate the melodies. The refrains do allow most of the instruments to bob in and out of the lead role on some level. Furthermore, the piano parts were composed in two tracks so as to better structure it for two hands in my head (even if some of the stretches probably require an assistant). The thing didn’t even have a drum part until two or three weeks ago, too.

This blows. You can joke about SoundCloud rappers or whatever meme you saw on Facebook and filed away in your head as gospel, but there’s a lot of anarchic musical chaos that’s buried in there. The kind of thing that got me back into composing after a year or so off. That’s the kind of fun and inspiration that might be about to go under the waves.
