Overheard while eating:
There are two young women. They're both tiny and I initially might have guessed they were 14, but they were talking about driving somewhere and other later teen things, so I conclude they're at least 16. They're eating two tables away, and the place is pretty quiet, so I can't not hear them.
There was a lot of commentary about a common acquaintance and their inconsistent behavior and were they just a bitch or is something else driving that, and a lot about an upcoming party, and then talk turned to Young Man M.
M, according to young woman #1, is annoying because he has taken a lot from her and never really gives back.
Like what, inquired YW#2
YW#1, without much inflection: like, he took my batteries, and my homework, and my virginity...
...
So I initially was like whoa there very unconcerned girlfriend one of these things is not like the others, but then I thought about the social constructedness of virginity/virginity-loss and how it's weaponized against young women in particular, and decided I didn't hate this framing.
YW#2 was like oh yeah and he was a [jerk] about that, and so then they agreed M doesn't need any more of their time, bussed their tables, and went on their way.
Someone does not know how murder mysteries work.
P.S. I really, really liked this movie. And if you’ve seen it, I’m sure you know on whose behalf he is offended (re: “politics”) and well, based on some of my recent Tumblr posts you’re probably not surprised to hear that I especially liked that part. :)
[Screenshot of tweets from Ben Shapiro: “I regret to inform you that ‘Glass Onion’ is actively bad. I will discuss first the actual writing of the movie followed by the politics of it. Both suck. SPOILERS follow. First, the writing. The first hal of the movie is a complete misdirect and waste of time.]
I especially liked that the twist happened at exactly the midpoint (I happened to move the mouse a moment before and so I noticed). Very symmetrical or, IDK, identical of them.

There is nothing about this video I don't 100% love
It's been...32 minutes? of one episode and Kate Bishop is my favorite. Also that musical was amazeballs.
So, what is the etiquette for...
So I wrote a fanfic of a fic on AO3. That fic was an original work. At some point later I learned that fic was being pulled down; however, since the thing I wrote was for Yuletide, I left it up on the assumption that probably the author would do some work to find fanfic and ask for it to come down if needed. I do think the author was aware there was fic of their fic.
So that's all fine, but now I have learned that in fact the fic was pro-publshed by a mainstream publisher, under a different title. I have just acquired it and am excited to read it again; it looks from the description as though probably there were some changes to the dynamics of the story for publication, so I actually don't yet know whether my fic is jossed or whatever, but even if it is, that's fine. But so:
This means my fic says it is fanfic of Original Title, but it's clearly fanfic of New Title, which just was, you know, published over two years before New Title came out. Most likely their publisher is aware the material was previously posted online, but still, I don't feel great about having that connection to the previous iteration.
Am I supposed to update my story to use New Title? The character names and context are sufficiently unique that it would be very clearly the same work. Is there a rule for this? Am I overthinking it? It feels wrong to me to leave it the way it is, but again, gift fic. Who is in charge of this sort of thing, and how do I request a ruling?
Hi there! I wanted to rec one of your older HP fics in an HP femslash discord, "Pen to Paper," and it looks like the pornish pixies LJ comm is pretty much defunct. I was wondering if you had it cross-posted anywhere still, since it's one of my fav stories from my bb!me-didn't-realize-I-was-queer days. Hope you and yours are doing okay, given *waves hand at* everything. <3
You know, I don't think I do. I'll poke around in old files but we might be out of luck. Do you have any idea when it might have been published?
Every once in a while someone in an exchange makes a statement in their story request that seems like it must have an entire story of is own. Today's example is in a yuletide request (the entire spreadsheet is available; this is not me revealing my assignment), where, in a Cobra Kai fic request, the person's list of general dnw includes "hybrids with both animal and human ears appearing at the same time unless canon," and I have to say that might be the exact opposite of a *general* dnw. I'm positive there exists a canon and a fandom for which ...duplicative cross-species auditory apparatus presentation? is an issue of contention? (I don't know what it is, but there are many stories in the world and they encompass a lot) and I am not here to tell anyone what features of a story should or should not bother, entrance, trigger, or beguile them, but like, I feel there exists an entire story that might be more interesting than the yuletide fic they ultimately get about how that general dnw came to be one in need of delineation.
I'm other news yay it is time for yuletide. This year I totally hosed the line in the signup form for a letter, because I was trying to edit it in in the middle of the night while staffing an emergency shelter, so it's a good thing I did include prompts in the body of my request and I'll hope my writer figures out I MEANT there is a tag at dreamwidth if they want more data on my general preferences. (But I'm sure they will do fine regardless.)
So now that prime video has stopped pretending not to have Stargate Atlantis for a while (it literally stopped mid episode several weeks ago and then for some period of time it said it did and did not have that content to display? This is why I struggle with streaming services. Anyway, it seems to be back) I am rewatching and am up to Tabula Rasa.
I assume that even though that is happening on my computer, my phone also knows I am me and this is why today when I attempted to refer to my colleague Elizabeth in a text, my phone decided to AC that to "Rodney." Because I'm not really coming up with another coherent explanation. I don't know any Rodneys? So like...?
I don't know what I want to ask for related to this yuletide nomination (which, to be clear, is not yet approved so maybe they will kick it out), but like, I feel there is potential for some deeply cracked and/or profound fic in the interaction between the math, science, story, and ...other story, I guess, of this year.
Today I am here to tell you about conversations with my parents. Last week, apropos of not much, my step dad, who is nearly eighty and both highly educated and still entirely with it, told me a thing he learned recently. Here it is. The area between the scrotum and the anus has a name. It is called the perineum.
Good to know, buddy. Good to know.
GDI. I am working my way forward from the beginning of AO3 for SGA fics that feature John/Rodney, are complete, and are at least 10000 words (criteria because I was looking for a particular one, which I did find, but then I kept going, skipping ones that have shit I don't want. Hey by the way, Cate, your Iowa boys are still so <3 <3). Anyway. I have found myself reading a fic set at Disneyland. I am maybe ten percent of the way through. I am goddamn whistling It's a Small World without meaning to and probably this will continue and damn it. My life are very hard.
So it's 2020 in a pandemic and I am over here watching Friday Night Lights, the series, for the first time, because what the shit there have been no ballsports in fully one billion years now omg, and like, why didn't all y'all tell me about these cuties? (No, you did, but here I am, 15 years later). Also, Kid Two is distressed that I am like ♥ ♥ ♥ about it because he is wrong (obviously).
Well hi there, confusing vivid explicit sex dream about co-worker whose physical body is not particularly the kind that generally lights me up. Okay, it's good to know there's still more to learn about myself half a century into this game...? (Obviously, will not be mentioning this dream to co-worker as this might feel creepy to them, but now I gotta figure out what to do with that imagery)
When you forgot the canon thing you hated
(spoilers for a show that finished airing 16 years ago?) I just finished rewatching ST: ENT for the first time since it originally aired, and y'all, I had absolutely failed to store the death of Major Hayes in my head because it is entirely not possible he and Malcolm didn't have a happily ever after. Nope. I'd just basically gone along assuming that he was injured and so he had to go recover on Earth and they hadn't brought him back yet by the end of the series. (I've been actively in denial about Trip since the show ended, but I knew I was firmly in the AU:canon divergence place on that one).
We Live Again!!
(Yeah, I may have marathoned Gargoyles recently)
So here we go for… ClintCoulson 2020: Red Room Remix Quarantine Edition
No big rule adjustment. We still need to adjust our calendar, but we want to start earlier so that we can give people more time in deference to the current situation.
We’re going to try open up sign ups within the week to allow for that extra time.
I feel like there should be fic about the Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt finding out that actually, yes, there are times one should self isolate.
