“Guess who is turning 30 in two days?” Bianca smirked a little not feeling that afraid of getting older. “This means I get to wear sensible footwear and do crossword puzzles right?” 

“That’s the highlight of turning 30, isn’t it? Crossword puzzles, orthopedic shoes, and that weird powder that old people use to regulate their digestion.” Flora wrinkled her nose. “I’m a bit scared of hitting the big three-o myself next year. My parents like to tease me that they have a cemetery plot already picked out and I’m like ‘really?’ Is it not morbid enough that I dig up bones for a living, now you have to make jokes about them being my own?”

Marnie sighed a little as she held up a pair pants, “These are super cute, but guess what?” she gestured to where the pockets should have been, “No pockets!” she folded the pants back up and laid them back down on the table. “I don’t know why women’s clothes have to be so complicated. Like is it too much to ask for pants with pockets that can actually hold something??? And I mean both front and back” she said with a shake of her head. 

Flora nodded, rolling her eyes at the concept. “This is why I get so excited when people put pockets on things like dresses! What’s the point in making a pair of pants if you’re just going to make us carry a bag to put our stuff in? Have you ever noticed how there are never any men’s pants without pockets? Why can’t we be extended the same courtesy?” She scowled, mostly kidding, but at the same time, it made perfect sense.

“Does that happen to you a lot, then?” Flora glanced over to where the man in question had just left, making a face. “Ew. Why do people think being skeevy like that is okay? Especially in public.”

“I’m a barista and a student. No” Eilis laughed and shook her head a little. “Hey on the plus side at least you’re getting dates yeah?” She pointed out with a small shrug. “Even if they’re all muppets”

“At least with a barista you get to see new people every day, right? That’s exciting,” she said and smiled. “True. Some of them aren’t even worth the effort but at least it’s getting out there somehow. That’s how I try to look at it.”

“aww, honey bun..” katherine sighed softly, “you have to mention your job on the first date, that way you can weed out the idiots. also, are you not going to tell people what you do? babe, you can’t do that,” she smiled. “my life is all work and no play and constant lusting…and avoiding the brooklyn bridge, mostly.”

“There seem to be nothing but idiots lately, I swear.  What does it take to find someone with a brain?” she asked, rolling her eyes. “Maybe I should just start telling them I study dirt instead of getting into the logistics. That would scare them away.” She snorted, and raised an eyebrow. “I feel like that could sum me up too most days. The Brooklyn Bridge is overrated.”

“I mean…I can’t say I blame them for that line of questioning,” Alexandria chuckled, shaking her head. “Though, I’m not sure asking if they’re real is what I would go with.” She shrugged and smirked. “I like to think my life is fairly interesting. I’m a model, so it’s definitely always got some drama and flair to it.”

“If I hadn’t seen so many of them myself, I probably would ask the same kinds of questions. I mean it isn’t really solidified until you have a skeleton in front of you,” she admitted with a smile. “Are you really? That’s amazing, modeling has always been one of those industries that fascinates me. What kind of work are you doing right now?”

Kat giggled, suppressing the urge to ask the woman if dinosaurs were in her expert opinion, real. “I’m not going to ask you that question then for fear of your wrath.” She tucked some hair behind her left ear gently, putting her sketching pencils down on the table. “I really wish i could, but it’s not.” She lied, not wanting to talk about her personal problems right now, at least she wasn’t going to blurt it out unprompted. It wasn’t interesting to anyone, and it was hard to talk about. “I uh…don’t really have much to report to be hone. I’m so sorry!”

“I trust that you already know the answer.” Flora just smiled, holding back a giggle. “Besides, I need to tell these people that Google is their friend. You’ll learn a lot more than I can teach you!” It was true; Flora had never had the patience to become a teacher, it required efforts of concentration that she just didn’t have in her. “Nothing? Surely there’s something going on? Maybe if I bribe you it’ll come out? I’ll even take annoying neighbor tidbits.”

“That’s funny, though. You could take them to a zoo and show them a lizard and let them know it’s a tiny dinosaur.” Analyn mused, smiling widely. “I wish there were still, you know, those big dinosaurs? But the ones that only ate plants. Herbivores? Yes, those. Anyway, I think you should keep mentioning you job on first dates, because you instantly learn how educated they are. I don’t think you’d want to go on a second date with someone with a pea brain, right?” She chuckled. “Me? I’m still trying to fill the emptiness inside me, caused by the closing down of the American Apparel stores. Can you even imagine? Online shopping is way less fun.”

“Why didn’t I think of that?” Flora groaned, shaking her head. “Apatosauruses are my favorite kind, so I would love to see them roaming loose in Central Park. That is true, I’ve had a few dates go horribly because the person thought flat earth was real.” She shuddered, laughing. “Honestly though, American Apparel shutting down is an actual tragedy. Why are they taking their insanely comfy t-shirts away from us? Someone should sue.”

“People actually asked you that?” he smirked. “This doesn’t help my faith in humanity.” He shook his head and laughed a little. “Well I own a  nightclub,” he said. “And my family has their own little reputation for drama and always being in the limelight. So there’s that.”

“You’d be shocked. It’s actually become such a common question that I’ve started saying no just to get a reaction out of people.” She grinned, shrugging. “It passes the time when the person can’t hold a conversation or is too busy staring at my boobs to actually bother giving me time of day.” Her eyebrows raised at the mention of family drama, and she nodded knowingly. “My family tends to be the same way. Our drama is much quieter and without a limelight, but it’s still there.”

≡     Nodding his head in sympathy, he can’t help the laugh that escapes from the back of his throat. “I feel the same way, except for me people are asking about the existence of extraterrestrial life. I’m an astrophysicist, not an astro-biologist. Sure our work goes hand in hand on occasion but…” He stops himself with a flustered grin. “Humans are interesting. Glad I’m not one” A smile.

“Astrophysics must be fascinating, I took a class once in school, but space has always been very overwhelming to me. Something about the massiveness of it all. I guess that’s why I chose to dig into earth rather than leave it.” She wrinkled her nose and grinned. “I almost feel like it’s better to not be one these days. You can blame all of humanity’s problems on someone else.”

“See now I just avoid the whole dating thing all together.” She nodded thoughtfully as she folded her arms across her chest. “My life is just a busy bundle of planning things and hoping I’m cool enough to sit with the popular girls.” She joked playfully. “The usual.”

“It’s usually much easier that way,” she commented, smiling. “It would be nice to have someone you have things in common with, though. And will the popular girls ever let anyone sit with them? All the empirical evidence I’m gathered says that trying gets you nothing but spaghetti in your hair and another lecture from your mother about stained clothing.”

“I need to learn to stop mentioning my job on first dates. It hasn’t done me any good, and all I ever get are questions like ‘Are dinosaurs actually real?’ Some people have brains the size of peas, I swear.” Flora sighed, looking up at the person across from her and smiling sheepishly at them. “What about you? Please tell me your life is more interesting than mine.”
