Since Jon was shot by Ygritte, he’s injured and using crutches during the Wildling attack on Castle Black, so he’s posted on the King’s Tower as an archer with Satin & Dick (I’m not kidding, that’s seriously his name. BTW gay dynamics in the books are limited to cryptic subtext. The best hint for Loras & Renley was that they “prayed” together the night before Renley’s death. So keep that in mind) They also posted scarecrows on the walls to make it look like there are a lot more people defending the castle than there actually were, to delay the Wildling attack.
Jon had six scarecrows sharing the roof of the King’s Tower with him, along with two actual breathing brothers. Deaf Dick Follard sat in a crenel, methodically cleaning and oiling the mechanism of his crossbow to make sure the wheel turned smoothly, while the Oldtown boy wandered restlessly around the parapets, fussing with the clothes on straw men.
