Jill goes to see Florence + the Machine in the middle of a heatwave: thoughts and impressions or whatever
some notes on my experience seeing Florence live in Milan yesterday. may'haps interesting if you're curious or going to see the tour yourself.
it was so. fucking. hot. the gig was part of the lineup of a festival (Coca Cola I-Days) and it took place out in the open. the sun sets at 21.15 and we were there at 18.30. every sliver of shade was taken.
the concert started over half an hour late and I'm convinced it was because of the heat. Florence looked paler than usual and was very low energy at the beginning. I was actually worried she'd end up passing out on stage, but she handled it like a pro. still, I wonder how much longer we can keep summer music festivals going with the effects of climate change running rampant like they have this year. I was sick and almost passed out myself: I'm so short that I was straight up drowning in the crowd, not a lot of fresh air down there in the sea of sweaty pits (y i k e s). the band was late, and every performer on that stage most likely felt a little unwell under those burning stage lights.
TL;DR: if you're going to a festival or concert in southern Europe in the next few weeks, bring electrolytes, plenty of water, a hat, and mosquito spray. we got cooked and then eaten alive by those evil bugs. DESPITE being equipped with all of the above.
everyone - Florence, the band, the dancers - gave it their all in spite of the shitty weather conditions. the witch choir was just as creepy and charming as you'd expect them to be, I was transfixed. and Florence's voice carries in a way I've rarely experienced with other performers.
the set list was... fine. she played a lot of her most famous hits but - complaint incoming - only four songs from the new album. Everybody Scream is my favourite album of hers, so I was really looking forward to hearing some of her most recent music live. instead we only got Everybody Scream, Buckle, One of the Greats, and Sympathy Magic. I've looked it up and apparently this is the set list she's been playing in this leg of the tour. it seems like the US leg got more variety, but I may be wrong. I wonder if the album just... didn't do too well in Europe? tbf the audience was almost silent when she played the new songs. except for me. I was possessed and couldn't stand still lol.
Sympathy Magic was a religious experience. I felt like I was going to start levitating lmao. the ending was so moving. Florence actually went down into the crowd to hug fans as she sang "come on, come on, come on, come on...". people were crying. I almost cried myself and I was nowhere near the hug zone. I love her so much.
at the beginning of the concert, Florence told us that no matter what we're going through, we're not alone, because she's always with us. and what if I cried.
before Rabbit Heart she mentioned that she needed a sacrifice and asked for volunteers. she then proceeded to pick fourteen people and consumed their souls on stage. the lucky fuckers.
she spoke to us in Italian every chance she got... I know her mum would be proud. she's got a beautiful accent QUEEN SHIT.
the ending was a little abrupt, no encore or anything. chalking this up to the heat again.
the concert lasted maybe 1.30 hours in total, which I think is the regular duration of a show of hers in this leg of the tour? the first time I saw her in concert (I think it might have been the Cerimonials tour) we got at least 2 hours if I recall correctly.
my score: a strong 9/10 overall. 10/10 would go again and be her sacrifice ✨️🖤
This Friday (3rd July) I went to the concert of Florence + The Machines.
It was a Mystical and very Special experience, not only because I went alone and faces all the odds of the case (ex: A last minute change of the train from Bologna to Milan), but also because I feel connected with the people around me, like that I could be myself even that I feel different to the other, and I felt very emotional and in tune with the experience of the concert and the live music, especially this one for / still helping me to overcome a difficult moment in my life and vent all my frustrations and insecurities (I’m sorry that I couldn’t hear “Witch Dance” but I’m still happy to hear my other favorite songs!!)
For these reasons,
