angel--emmerson:
“For next time? You’re buying gifts in advance and spacing them out? Jesus, you really are going to make these two spoiled, I’m gonna have to ween you off,” he teased, knowing there was no stopping her but he couldn’t deny that he liked the idea of her being around to spoil them for the rest of their lives. He knew they needed that kind of enthusiasm and support, especially when it wouldn’t always be cool to get that from their dad. He felt his smile turn up at her laughter, knowing that he talked a lot of shit when he spoiled her in return. He understood her want to show her love in the form of gifts, to want to create that connection with the kids and it wasn’t like he wasn’t grateful. It surely saved him a hell of a lot of money on toys.
The term of endearment had him pausing more than he may have had previously, Blake’s return to town a huge reminder of why that nickname had always seemed and felt so familiar. His head was still spinning from the interaction but he wasn’t sure he was ready to talk about it yet. “Ah even better now that you’re with me? You’re such a charmer, Flo. Fun? Uh here and there, supposed to go to a show this weekend with Wes, Candi and I may take the kids to the movies this week, got some cool shit happening at the center. Bento boxes though, hell yeah I’m down. Always trying to get creative with their lunches, you know? And big man over there is starting to develop a real appetite between him and my brother always raiding my fridge I practically live at the grocery store.” He laughed as he moved around the kitchen and served her some water before pulling out the ingredients he wanted to use. “You got any plans for Halloween?”

"you can’t be against presents! that’s my love language!” she responded, with an odd blend of pouting and defensive frown. flora was definitely, and shamelessly, trying to buy the kids’ affection to make up for the fact she had very limited maternal instincts. and, so far, her technique had been proven effective. angel made a point, if she kept going, they would end up as spoiled as she was. she was unsure whether it was a good thing or not. “i’ll try to hold back for...” she took a moment to think. “their birthdays, next year. we got a deal?”
“it’s just the truth! you always make things better.” it was an euphemism. she truly believed she would have left the town a long time ago if she had never crossed paths with him — and if she could have managed the guilt of leaving the martin’s legacy behind to collect dust. “you’re one busy bumble bee! if you need a baby sitter, you know where to find me.” while it was automatic for flora to offer her help, it was different for their little family. she did it out of genuine desire to show she cared, rather than to find a purpose for her day. “i can’t say i blame him! i don’t think i’ve out grown this phase yet. my fridge is always empty and you sure bet i will never snack on that sad celery i always buy for no reason!”
she took a sip from the glass, which she held with both hands like she would a mug of hot chocolate. “thank you for the fun evening. i really needed it, both the break and the sugar rush. my dentist was quite thrilled as well!” florence laughed the sudden heavy tone of her voice away. hanging out with him, the kids and candice gave her a feeling of normalcy, maybe even of belonging. which is something she rarely experienced. “i might have enjoyed it more than than the kids.” speaking of them, she waved at them through the window. “we should go as the incredibles next year, i’ll be edna mode! that would be... incredible! see what i did there?”
