I rarely use tumblr via my computer anymore so I just saw this. I’m not sure when you sent this, but I apologize if it’s taken me a long time to get back to you. I had a long think about this. I got some similar responses vis a vis number 7 on my list of things that annoy me at hockey games. And I tried to think about why that one in particular seemed to bother me at games. I think it comes down to my own internal assumptions about others’ intentions. And the truth is I don’t know anyone’s motivations unless they tell me. I don’t know WHY these women decide to wear jerseys as dresses. Maybe they just feel cute like that, as you suggested. Maybe they didn’t have any clean pants that day. They could be doing it for a number of reasons, but the judgment I make about them isn’t on them. It’s on me. 

Judgments are normal. They’re human. That whole post is just a list of judgments I made - mostly for the sake of humor. And I didn’t think about the implications of number 7. Which is my mistake. It was one of those judgments I should have kept to myself.

The truth is – yes, girls wearing jerseys as dresses make me uncomfortable and annoyed, for a variety of reasons. And I’m allowed to feel that way. But just because I’m uncomfortable with or annoyed by something doesn’t make it wrong. Personally, I get cold at hockey games. And I don’t fully “get” the trend. But I’m not the fashion police and even if I were, I don’t have jurisdiction. I would never want to make anyone feel like they can’t wear what they want. 

– except people who wear a completely irrelevant jersey to the game being played. I STAND BY THAT ONE.

it’s crazy to me that people would even think saying “there are and have been gay people in the NHL” is even slightly controversial when we can confirm that:

1. a gay player almost came out, called a press conference and was ready to go through with it until 2 hours before when he decided he wasn’t comfortable with it.

2. two players on the same team one time went to a gay bar not knowing the other was there and they made eye contact and pretended they both just thought it was a normal bar

3. the nhl had a gay rights activist and public speaker talk with the gay players in the NHL (without outing them) as a way to share their stories with someone who could understand.

4. players have said that having a gay player in the locker room actually improves team relations between everyone and promotes a healthier environment

all these all come from a documentary you can watch today that came out years ago but sure let’s pretend you JUST realized gay men might exist when even from the closet they’ve been shouting “we’re here” for years.
