I hate to have to reiterate this:
Do not make assumptions on topics like this if you don’t/can’t understand the political climate.
Every public figure is expected to have a political opinion, and people seem to think it’s their right to know it. That’s a universal thing with all public figures; every celebrity, even athletes, is expected to share every part of their ideology to please their fans.
So, obviously, this means a Russian public figure, even an athlete, is expected to have a public political opinion, and if you want to keep you and your family safe, that public political opinion is of course going to be pro Putin, his regime, and his allies.
A Russian public figure is never going to be able to say “Oh sorry, Mr. Putin, I must decline the invitation to your personal Christmas party.” or “Sorry I didn’t invite you to my party, Mr. Putin.”
Evgeni Malkin had to literally escape Russia, and you can’t fathom why he would be publically pro Putin? “Gay propaganda” is illegal in Russia, and you can’t fathom why a Russian player with family and friends still in Russia wouldn’t use pride tape?
Saying “Okay, but they didn’t have to go out of their way to do this so they should still be cancelled!” isn’t “woke”, it’s just ignorant. “Cancel culture” at its core is steeped in ignorance and entitlement, but that’s a different beast all together that I won’t touch on.
You have no right to force someone to reveal their political opinion and then “cancel” them for wanting to keep their family safe.
I don’t claim to understand what’s going on in a stranger’s mind and I certainly never will. But -
