“This is Angwusnasomtaqa, or Crow Mother, in the form of a Hopi kachina doll—carved figures that represent supernatural beings or forces of nature. Crow Mother is stately and stern, she always knows how to behave, and she is a leader of ethics and virtue. A number of kachina figures are included in the exhibition Climate in Crisis: Environmental Change in the Indigenous Americas. Yesterday I learned that the current dip in commuting and travel may be having a positive environmental impact, which is making me think differently about the shutdown of institutions and business in New York and around the world."
