Reasons Why I Hate Taylor Swift's New 'Gay Anthem'
The song in itself isn't horrible. The beat is good. The music video is vibrant and electric and fun. And even though I'm a christian, I even find the message important. We do need to calm down. If we as christians believe all sin is the same then we need to start acting like it. Don't accept that your friend is a pathological liar or impulsive thief and then turn around and hate on gay people. We only need to show people love. That's it.
The message isn't my problem with the song at all. Here's why I refuse to listen to the song:
• My first problem with the song/music video is that she decided to put all her fabulous gay friends in a trailer park. What mental image do you get when you think trailer park? Trailer trash. Whenever trailer parks are used in the media or mentioned in a conversation or joke they are almost always used to denote that a person, or group of people are trash. Trailer parks are synonymous with homelessness, unclean living, being poor or careless, being in trouble with the law, or the 'useless, brainless, unemployed layabout' stereotype. So... is Taylor Swift saying gay people are trash? Because that's what I get from that. And that makes me angry. We are better than this. We can do better. Why not film the video in a luxurious, highrise apartment complex in New York with a pool party on the roof?
• My next problem with the music video is that all of the 'homophobic, conservative haters' are presented as disgusting, filthy, white, asshole rednecks. This is not okay, either. Now, I don't think people should be homophobic- its wrong. And extreme conservatism is toxic. But if we're ever going to stop the hate and the divided, two party system bullshit, we need to start treating each other as equals. We need to stop defining each other as young or old, white, Indian, Hispanic, Muslim, Asian or black, gay or straight, christian or atheist, Republican or Democrat, and start seeing each other for what we really are - capable human beings. Respect is a two-way street and we all need to start driving on it.
• The biggest problem with the song is that Taylor Swift just proved herself to be a first rate capitalist. She's not gay. She's not bisexual, or asexual, nor is she nonbinary, transgender, or demisexual, ect. Or, if she is, she hasn't come out about it yet. By releasing her song in June she's capitalizing on the hate and oppression of the LGBTQ+ community. Pride month is about celebrating how far they've come- from being lynched and hung and stoned, from being hunted and imprisoned and slaughtered by the nazis, to being treated as actual human beings. And they still have a long way to go. But she took a celebration that has nothing to do with her and profited off of it. And if that wasn't what she was trying to do, there are 11 more months of the year that she could have released the song in. She's pulled stunts like this before. Like when she stole all of Katie Perry's thunder when she hosted that awards show (I don't remember which one it was). Not cool. Let people have their thing. Regardless of what society and your fame has lead you to believe, not everything has to be about you.
We need to stop treating girls like all they are is relationships. We need to stop worrying about if a girl's clothes are distracting boys in class and start worrying about why we think it's okay for boys to look at girls like that in the first place.
So, I guess we are who we are for a lot of reasons. And maybe we'll never know most of them. But even if we don't have the power to choose where we come from, we can still choose where we go from there. We can still do things. And we can try to feel okay about them. - The Perks of Being a Wallflower
Flowers are a necessary part of life .
The best indie albums of all time, in my opinion. Most of these albums came out while I was in high school and they heavily influenced my music taste. I was raised on AC/DC and ZZ Top and Hooters and all that good jazz from the 70's and 80's. While I liked this music I grew up listening to, it never felt like MY music. And then this recommendation for a video came up on my YouTube one day - it was for Little Talks by Of Monsters And Men and I fell in love with their weird, wandering-through-a-forest-filled-with-whimsical-creatures sound. That song sparked my love for the indie music genre and I've been addicted ever since.
