also! many members of the olympic team couldn’t qualify until they got to Rio. for example, members of the swim team were denied access to jerusalem (sometimes given permits only to have them revoked last minute) and couldn’t train in pools of proper olympic length, thus leaving them unable to qualify for the games at all. luckily, they were able to apply for special dispensation and were able to go to Rio a few days early to qualify at pools there.
