I Love You, Now Die: The Commonwealth vs Michelle Carter
I would like to preface my thoughts on this wonderfully done documentary by saying that I had never heard of this case until seeing a preview for this on HBO. I’ve never been one to watch or read news (primarily because it’s so grim) so it doesn’t come as a complete shock. If you are not yet aware of this case and it’s outcome I suggest watching it before reading any spoilers below. Also I won’t dive into the details of the case so you might find reading my comments confusing if you’re not informed on the particulars.
First off, I would love to comment on how the documentary was edited. I love how it was split into two short films and how each one painted a different picture of the case. In part one I was convinced that Michelle Carter was guilty and psycho and deserved to go to prison. In the second part I was completely slapped in the face with the truth that I let emotions get the best of me and did not wait to hear and judge Michelle based on all the facts. I had jury duty a few weeks ago and I was assigned to a court room that needed to pick a jury for a criminal case. The interviewing and deliberation of prospectful jurors lasted two days. Throughout those two days the lawyers always pressed one question: can you set your emotions aside and judge the defendants merely on the facts? I now see why they were so keen to do so. Another thing that came up a lot in those two days was the phrase “prove beyond a reasonable doubt.” I also now see why that matters immensely.
Second and lastly, I would like to comment on the conviction and sentencing. I believe that the judge made the wrong conviction. The commonwealth failed to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Michelle Carter was indeed guilty of manslaughter. To me it all comes down to that last moment: Conrad exiting his truck, afraid to die, and then getting back in because Michelle told him to. BUT remember: there is no recording of a phone call where you can hear Michelle telling Conrad to get back in or any records of texts where she might have said so. There is only records of texts to a friend where Michelle admits to telling Conrad to get back in but that too is not proof beyond a reasonable doubt because it was clearly stated how mentally unstable Michelle was and how much of a liar she was too. So who knows if that admission was truth or just another way for her to garner attention and sympathy from friends. I could also go on about how Cornad too was very unstable and how he was emotionally abusive to Michelle and how they were just a potent mix of two deranged people but I won’t.
Lawfully I don’t think it was right that Michelle was found guilty but morally I think she definitely is guilty. But obviously the court is not around to delegate morality and you cannot sentence someone unless found guilty of breaking the law. Some could argue that maybe the judge found her guilty to be able to sentence her to rehabilitation but let’s be honest prisons are not rehabilitation centers. They’re imprisonment facilities that make dirty money for people. I think I could agree with the argument if the judge had sentenced her to two years in a psychiatric hospital because that would rehabilitate Michelle Carter much better and be the best sentence to a guilty verdict secretly based off morality.
TL;DR ultimately I think she was simply an unstable girl who loved an unstable boy that gave her the attention she desperately craved and fell prey to his abuse and in fear of losing him she supported his suicidal tendencies because it’s what she thought best. I believe a sentence to a psychiatric facility would have been more appropriate than a sentence to prison if the judge secretly found her guilty just to provide her with rehabilitation. Obvi that’s a whole mess in itself for a judge to do but I won’t go into that. I don’t think it was proven beyond a reasonable doubt that she was guilty and therefore she did not deserve prison time.

I just finished the Grey’s finale and ugh I’m an emotional wreck. This is the part where I embarrass myself and talk about my very real feelings about very fictional people.
I love Stephanie so much. It’s funny at first I hated all the new interns. I grew annoyed when they all started getting more air time because it took away from the main cast. But slowly and surely I grew to like them and hell even be very fond of them. I am going to miss Edwards. She was a beautiful character. I hope she’s happy wherever life leads her.
Meredith Grey. Love of my life. My queen. My everything. She has gone through so much. She has suffered enough for two lifetimes and still life continues to fuck her over. Just when she finally let herself love again, it’s taken from her. I cried watching her hug an ecstatic Nathan. Not only because she was possibly losing another chance at love. But because of her kind and beautiful soul. But don’t get me wrong, she will forever be the queen of all things Dark and Twisted™.
CAN WE TALK about this coat tho!? Like, YAAASS I’m living for it. Those buttons! And the buckles on the wrists! Ugh, I swear Liv has the best style. I WANT THAT COAT.
I REALLY NEED THIS JOB SO PLEASE SEND GOOD ENERGY MY WAY SO THAT I CAN PASS THE DRUG TEST 😭😭😭
The Big Little Lies adaptation was good. Nicole Kidman was the shining star of HBO’s limited series and I’d say she most definitely deserves an Emmy. If you enjoyed the series and have yet to read the novel, please do so. It gifts pleasures the series could not provide due to the nature of filmmaking.
I JUST WATCHED LAST NIGHTS SCANDAL AND OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!!!
I plan on being an engineer at NASA, but I can’t do that without taking them classes at that all-white high school, and I can’t change the color of my skin. So I have no choice but to be the first, which I can’t do without you, sir. Your Honor, out of all the cases you gon’ hear today, which one is gonna matter a hundred years from now? Which one is gonna make you the first?

Beauty and the Beast is a gorgeous visual feat. The script is witty and fresh and not as cheesy as I had imagined. Some things were added and adjusted for modern times but it does not stray far from its animated source. All your favorite songs are there along side new ones. Emma Watson is wonderful but her autotune not so much. Four out of five stars from me! Go and see it with a trusted recommendation from yours truly. Go give your part of what I’m sure will be big profit for Disney.
