But… where?
You lost a rat?
The past is knocking || Flint and Farrah
Flint stared at her for a moment, incredulously. He was torn. There was the little kid in him that hoped she’d really left him and Eric would be out of their lives for good, but then there was the adult that knew better. The one who’d been through enough of his mother’s boyfriends to know the pattern. It was just different this time, with her groveling at their feet and the power to say no at their fingers.
"Are you sure?" He asked, more playing with the wrapper of his muffin than eating it. "I mean she’ll probably sleep out there a night, realize we’re not buying it and then go back home… But I mean we also have the power to kick her out if we need to."
Farrah was about to nod her head, when she shook it. "I'm not really sure" she said with a sigh. "But, still, as you said, we have the power to kick her out with we need too" Farrah said.
Farrah played with her knuckles, "I... if you don't want her in here, she can stay out there, but we could listen to what she has to say" she added, she bit her lip tentatively. It had been their mother who'd refused to believe her, and part of her just wanted to turn the tables on their mother. She already knew that if she was asked to go back home, she'd say no. She liked it in Hava, and she wasn't going back there.
The past is knocking || Flint and Farrah
"Probably to drink all the wine." He retorted, taking one more glance through the peephole. "She has a bag." Flint pulled back, "Oh yes, let me just be a total bitch for months on end and show up with all my belongings like that makes any fucking sense." He latched the chain on the door. "Well, we’ll see just how much persistence she has." He moved away from the door, going for another muffin. Despite wanting to panic, he kept it contained. He couldn’t freak out in front of Farrah. It was better to minimize it. He’d go out and talk to her later.
"Fine guess I’ll just sleep outside!" The woman shouted in her classic attempt to guild them. He hated that it worked. He hated that even a small part of him desired to open that door and help his mother despite everything.
He sighed, “Well… She’s either going to sleep on our staircase or in here, what’s the lesser of evils?”
She followed Flint, grabbing herself a muffin, and taking a small bite out of it. She chewed it, despite the fact that she didn't feel like eating. But, eating was better than fretting. "She's got a bag? Fantastic." Farrah pinched the skin of her elbow. Well, she wasn't dreaming. Their mother really had just threatened to sleep outside their door.
Farrah dropped her head, her long hair falling into her face. She didn't know which was the lesser of evils. She had no idea what their mother might say about her and Flint, but if they let her in their home, then only god knew what would happen. Farrah chewed on her lip absent-mindedly, and lifted her head back up, using her hands to smooth her hair back.
"I think.. I think we should let her in." Farrah said slowly, wringing her hands together.
The past is knocking || Flint and Farrah
Flint pressed his eye back against the peephole. It was just her at the door as far as he could tell, but that didn’t mean Eric couldn’t be somewhere else. That didn’t mean Eric didn’t know exactly where they lived. Flint grabbed her hand on his arm, giving it a small squeeze. “He’s not there.” He said, but that was all he could confirm. He still didn’t know what to do. He didn’t have to let her in, but she could still linger around the apartment and knowing her she would. Flint set his head against the door. “She’s not going to leave.”
"Flliiint. Let me in."
He began to regret not paying attention in Spanish, because being able to pretend like he didn’t know English would’ve been the most useful thing in the world next to teleportation. He had to think of a game plan, but nothing came. “Fuck.”
When Flint said that Eric wasn't there, Farrah let out a breath she didn't realise she'd been holding. She gave him a weak smile as he squeezed her hand, before returning her attention to the door, and the woman behind it. “She's persistent, you have to give her that” Farrah muttered, her nose crinkling in disdain. “I wonder what she wants” Farrah said, crossing her arms, and leaning her weight on one leg.
“Do you think she'll get bored if we just leave her there?” she asked, hoping that their mother would leave of her own accord, but doubting it. “We could ask Kim to get rid of her” Farrah suggested, though she didn't want to rely on Kim like that.
Farrah ran a hand through her hair, and tugged at a handful of hair from her scalp. “Why does she have to show up now?” she asked, a frown appearing on her face.
The past is knocking || Flint and Farrah
Flint didn’t crawl out of bed until twelve on his day off. A whole night had slipped away baking and before he’d known it he was crawling into bed at sunrise, the apartment smelling like cinnamon. It happened whenever he got stressed, so right before the rent got paid there were muffins and nobody could really complain except for Flint who was making a beeline for the coffee after noon had come and gone. There was enough time to shower, dress and down two cups of coffee and a muffin by the time Farrah got home from school.
Flint was pouring his third cup of coffee by the time she was home from school and fully awake now. “I made muffins.” Flint said needlessly from the kitchen, “Enough for a small army…” There was only a small dent in them that made him frown. “Did Kim have any?” He asked. He’d seen little of her since her break up. He was about to be the obnoxious roommate and shove muffins down her throat.
A whole new worry was about to take precedent though. Not five minutes after he’d sat himself down with his coffee and another muffin did a knock come at the door. Flint set the cup down and groaned as he got to his feet and went to answer it. The color drained from his face the moment he looked through the peephole. “Fucking shit.” He hissed, “W-We have company.” Did he open it? Did he pretend he wasn’t home? The knock came again and Flint flustered and locked the door.
"I know you’re in there!" Came the loud, familiar voice of their mother. Crap, why did he touch the doorknob?
Farrah chucked her school bag onto the sofa, a few books fell out and scattered on the cushions. She stopped to pick them up, and hastily put them back in her bag. She walked through to the kitchen, following the sound of Flint's voice, and the smell of baked goods. She went to the fridge, grabbing the carton of orange juice, and pouring herself a glass. "They smell yummy" Farrah told him.
She shrugged. "Maybe. I've not seen her today" Farrah said as she walked back into the living room, picking up a muffin for herself as she did. She moved her bag to the floor and pulled out one of the books that had fallen out. She tucked her legs beneath her, and opened the book to the page where she'd left off.
Farrah looked up from her book at the knock of the door, and watched as Flint went to get it. She placed the book on the arm of the chair, and stood.
The sound of their mother's voice made Farrah stumble back, shocked. Any hint of a smile slid off her face. This was the last place she'd wanted to see their mother. Hava Hills had become sort of like her safe haven. 'She's here?' she mouthed at Flint, praying that it wasn't true.
She walked over to Flint, each step, hesitant and slow. "Is he here with her?" she whispered to him, and made to grasp at his arm, like a child might hold onto someone.
let it go
Let it Go: What does your character do when they’ve just had enough and need to get away from the world?
When Farrah has had enough, she holes herself up in her room, with a pair of headphones and a decent CD or two, and keeps herself to herself for just a little while. Often she’ll grab one of her pillows and hug it to herself. Till she’s ready to face the world again. If she’s not at home, she’ll find a quiet spot, and sit down by herself for a bit.
