âłAn Air's Got to Eat [for Miraj]
Rana watched her brotherâs face after she finished speaking. His brow furrowed and mouth turned downward. She knew that he wouldnât take her news well. There wasnât a reason for him to not react negatively. However, if she had been an Earth then he might have been proud of her achievement. Being asked to perform for royalty was a very high honor. Dancing at the new kingâs coronation would be an even higher one. She was sure there were girls who would do anything to be in the position she was in.
Her eyelids lowered and she mirrored his action of crossing his arms. âRegardless of if you think thereâs more to it, do you think you can stop me from going? You donât have to let me go.â Rana stared at Miraj for a good long moment, challenging him to find a way to make her unable to go. There was no way she was not going to go just because Miraj said no.
This was something she wanted to do and had already set her mind on. Good luck trying to talk her out of going.
After a while of silence the waitress finally arrived back at their table with food. Rana slowly broke eye contact with her brother as his attention also turned toward the girl.
âHere you two areâ the waitress said as she set the turkey sandwich on the table in front of Rana and the hand pies in front of Miraj. âNow, if thereâs anything else you need just let me know.â
âThanksâ Rana said as she shifted in her seat, leaning forward to be closer to her food. She examined both halves of the sandwich before deciding on one and picking it up to take a bite. As she chewed, she relaxed her hands and let her arms rest on the edge of the table.
She didnât speak again until the waitress was out of earshot and most of the food was gone from her mouth. âI know nothing I say is going to help, but Iâm not stupid. I know what Iâm doing and what Iâm getting myself into. Iâm not going just so I can wreak havoc and extract my revengeâ she said with a small roll of her eyes. âSeriously Miraj, what do you think Iâm going to do?â
Tension had crawled its way up from Mirajâs tailbone, along his back, across his shoulders, into his neck and forward through his jaw, which clenched tight. Â His squat nostrils flared. Â "And what exactly is this plan of yours, then? Â You say you âknow what youâre doing,â so what exactly is that? Â Tell me. Â I would love to hear it.â Â He grabbed a hand pie and took a bit bite, some of the filling escaping onto his chin.
Cursing, he wiped his mouth on his arm, then wiped his arm on his pants. Â Heâd need to wash them when he got home, anyway. Â "Because I have no idea. Â All I know is that youâre sure as the sun rises hot and early not intending to go there, enjoy the 'honorâ of dancing for the King, and come home.â
The glare with which he fixed his sister held for several seconds more before he turned it to the window instead, muscled arms folding across his chest. Â "You know how dangerous this is, right? Â They could catch you, lock you up, kill you. Â And then, either they come for me or they donât, but either way Iâll lose my sister. Â But you donât care about that. Â You just do whatever you please.â
Raising his sister had been difficult. Â But, if nothing else, heâd never been completely alone. Â Without her, who was he? Â What was he working toward? Â And why? Â Rana was the reason he worked so hard. Â
He wasnât offended that she wasnât satisfied with the meager life theyâd scraped together.  That only made him work harder still to try to improve it in any way he could.  But that she would put herself at such riskâŚ.
And she didnât even know the half of it.
A shrug lifted up Ranaâs shoulders when Miraj asked her what her plan was. âMaybe I just want to see what it looks like on the inside of the palace walls. See how those arrogant royals really live. How they celebrate. What they all look like.â She lifted up the first half of her sandwich to take a couple more bites before washing it down with some water.
Of course her brother was going to oppose her at every turn. Thatâs what he did. Especially when she set her mind to something that could have a disastrous outcome. It wasnât as though she blamed her brother, and he didnât actually do it on purpose. The last thing she wanted to do was cause her brother a heart attack. But sometimes she justâŚhad to do something. Restlessness was something she often felt every day. Most of the time she was able to deal with it and hold it in. Other times she had to act out in some way. She needed to constantly be moving forward.
It just so happened that most of the time she spent practicing dancing or moving the air.
Miraj acted as her anchor most of the time. Simultaneously preventing her from flying and harming herself.
She sighed loudly after finishing the first half of her sandwich and rolled her eyes before setting them back onto her brother. âYes, I am completely aware of how dangerous this is. They wonât catch me, because Iâll just be another body in a group of dancers. And even if, in the impossible chance, they âcatchâ me, youâre not gonna be there so they wonât be able to get youâ she said matter-of-factly. Her jade eyes fell down to the other half of her sandwich before she picked it up and examined it for the perfect spot to take her first bite.
