     there was a burning sensation in the back of his throat—throbbing in pain; crisp and dry. after dedicating hours to strengthening his vocals, he is now experiencing the aftermath of being a vocalist for his group. although soft when singing lyrics, rehearsals demands for blue to reach more difficult notes to further expand his range of talents. winded with a heaving chest, the manager noted that he practiced for enough hours to call it a day, allowing blue to venture elsewhere in the building to occupy his time. he could return to the apartment, but he hesitated knowing well that the boys would pester him with questions and cuddles, and he was honestly in no mood to be as friendly. he simply wanted to lie on the floor and sulk. when descending the steps to where the dance studio was located, he was hoping to find the dance studio vacant in order to sprawl across the floor and listen to his favorite music in a high volume without receiving complaints, for nothing else was located nearby the dance studio on this floor. blue, though, was surprised when he entered and found a petite body already claiming the room—her laughter introducing him. noticing the video she was playing, a chuckle fell from parted lips, and he pointed a finger, “i love that video–” he spoke with words cracking due to his difficulty with speaking fluently at the moment. “my friends always likes to compare me as the guy.” 

◊ * , + ;    —  suyin was so shocked at the presence of another person that she nearly dropped her phone, catching it right before it hit the ground. she sat up quickly and upon further inspection, realized the person was just blue. they’d interacted about as much as she had with most of the other unity members. she wasn’t particularly close to him but she appreciated his presence more than others. he didn’t try to be an older brother/father figure to the now youngest debuted idol under dimension’s, like so many others tried to do. and he wasn’t loud and overbearing liked namsoo. “my members compared me to the girl who says ‘and if you want to fight me, than fight me.’ i don’t see it.” okay, so maybe she did (young, small, defensive, would probably beat someone up), but she wouldn’t admit it. not one to beat around the bush, suyin furrowed her brow and looked up at blue. “what’s wrong with your voice?” it didn’t sound healthy and she knew unity was supposed to be recording for a comeback soon. blue had one of the best voices in the group; except for in this moment of course.

THE DANCE STUDIO will forever be like a second home to namsoo. that’s where he was most confident at, where nobody could judge him or kick him away whenever he did a move that wasn’t for everyone’s eyes. with unity still roaming free with their open schedules, the young dancer had enough spare time to practice their old dances that they still have to perform at an upcoming concert. he would dance until the sun rose and it was the crack of dawn, his legs never stopping and he pays the price when it’s time rest; his muscles screaming to stop but he didn’t listen. today would be no different in his eyes, dance and dance until you crack and fall to the floor. it was an unhealthy routine he made up for himself but he couldn’t just lay around and do nothing while other groups practiced their ass off to become better. he was very competitive in a way when it came to dancing, it runs in his blood after learning half of his skills from an old crew he joined at a young age. so when he left his dorms late at night to spend an extra few hours to himself and the music, he didn’t really expect to see someone else holding up the room. “ah, sorry. i didn’t think anyone would be here so late.” he dropped his bag on the floor with a smile. she didn’t seem to be doing anything important so he could practice, right? “all the other rooms are locked except for this one so…i hope you don’t mind me practicing a bit?”

◊ * , + ;    —  she was caught. suyin had hoped no one would interrupt her. she was exactly a people person and she didn’t want to explain why she was lying on the floor instead of using the room for it’s real purpose. once she heard the other voice, she stood up quickly, shoving her phone in her pocket. namsoo was familiar, but she didn’t know him that well. unity was sort of their unofficial brother group, and suyin had found herself friends with some individuals. he wanted to practice here. a small part of her was annoyed (a small part of suyin was always annoyed); just because she was taking a break didn’t mean she wasn’t using the studio. couldn’t he find someone to unlock a room?

“that’s fine,” she found herself saying. namsoo was a good dancer, and maybe he’d help her improve. suyin wasn’t bad, but performing was still new to her. she had a far way to go.

◊ * , + ;    —  that was it. it was out of her hands now. she had performed her song, the short dance they had taught her, and now she had to wait. the casting directors talked quickly in a language completely foreign to suyin, but she stood tall and confident. confidence was what matter most right?

it had been a shock to her when they stopped her on the street. it sounded like a scam. new york city was full of opportunities but mainly full of scams. people asked you to do stuff like this all the time. but at the urging of her friend and after a little research, it seemed nearly legit. she could try at least, right? no harm in that.

it was in fact real, and she was standing here being judged by strangers. nothing new. it was just... this was different. this could change her life. suyin would be whisked away to a foreign country, given the opportunity to make money and be something more. it would all be different. her prospects had always seemed bleak. she knew the statistics. foster kids rarely turned out successful when they weren’t adopted. when they never found their safe space. no opportunities were handed to them. they started the race further back than most.

but this. this was an opportunity, and suyin wouldn’t waste it. as long as she could remember, she was determined to not be a statistic. she’d beat the odds. she’d make something of herself. what, she didn’t know. she didn’t know what she was good at. this was a clear path. this she could do.

then someone spoke in english. “if all else fails, she could be a visual.” that was right. it wasn’t skill they had picked her from the millions for; it was her looks. taller than most asian girls. thin. small face, straight nose. over the years it had granted her attention from others, usually unwanted attention.

“i’ll be more than that.” her tone was defiant, and the others were surprised to hear her talk again. “if you think i won’t work hard and rely just on my looks, you’re wrong. i’ll be better. i’ll be the best you’ve got.” it was certainly gutsy, interrupting them, not being polite. her attitude could lose her this chance. but her words were the truth: it was programmed into her dna to be better than the rest, or at least try to be. her ambition surpassed most. what she would lack in talent, she would overcompensate for in hard work. for the first time she felt nervous, until one of them (the one who had scouted her) cracked a smile.

“i can’t argue with that. welcome to dimension’s entertainment.”

◊ * , + ;    —  while suyin had never truly had a home, she felt sudden waves of homesickness every now and again. not for a specific place or people, but for new york city. for somewhere she was familiar with, somewhere she knew every street and everyone spoke her language. for a place she felt comfortable and confident in. for small things like slang and fashion that every other person her age seemed to be wearing. it was easy for her to fake confidence here on the streets, but she was still uncertain on directions and the language. which is why she was currently scrolling through youtube, watching every vine compilation under the sun. she should be practicing. but it’s been five hours straight, on her own, dancing non-stop. she isn’t sure her legs will let her practice any longer. so instead she’s lying on her stomach, laughing at familiar videos that she would often find herself quoting with her ‘friends’ (casual acquaintances) for hours. suyin was so distracted that she didn’t notice the other person in the practice room until they spoke up.

Vice (Korean: 바이스) is a South Korean girl group formed by Dimensions United. The group consists of seven members: Jiwoo, Xi, Eunha, Yeri, Xiu, Mei and Suyin. They officially debuted on February 16, 2018 with the single album Nightmare.
