i will never get over how aegon "he's a twat" targaryen, aegon "the pink dread" targaryen, wasn't there for his brother one SINGULAR time and proceeded to make the wildest 180 in targaryen family history to become aemond's absolute ride or die.
aemond goes to make a toast? oh you bet your ass aegon's already raising his cup before he so much as gets out a single word.
lucerys, the boy who maimed aemond, so much as twitches as if he's about to go over to him? aegon gives the kid a fucking concussion with how violently and happily he slams his head into the table.
aemond kills lucerys, with no evidence to prove it was an accident? aegon's just like "dw i don't even remember which one that is" and THROWS HIM A FUCKING PARTY.
i've already written about the statues here so i won't get into them too much but just remember that it's unheard of to have statues of political figures, plus very dumb to spend money on them in the middle of a war.
tldr aegon is THE definition of ride or die and it's just so funny to me considering how starkly that contrasts with his and aemond's entire childhood.
I love this movie so much
The knife twirl hasn't left my mind since October
obsessed with miley’s new song
Viserys’s fatal flaw is that he only sees Daemon, Rhaenyra and her kids as his blood and family. He doesn’t consider his kids with Alicent as family - no they’re just a second choice/a back up plan that if something bad were to ever happened to his ‘real’ family and most of the time, they aren’t even a choice. The green kids aren’t treated like family by him. Viserys barely pays attention to them, barely shows affection or love towards them - they have every right to hate a father who doesn’t care or love them, who isn’t even there for them or their mother. On his deathbed, he literally says ‘Rhaenyra, my only child’. Fuck him lol. Rhaenyra or Daemon do deserve to be loved by him, but he was never a good father to Rhaenyra in the beginning either. He only started ‘loving’ her because of his guilt over killing Aemma. He was an ass to her when she was a teenager. He was an ass to her when he treated her like shit despite naming her heir, when he ignored her after her mother’s funeral, when he basically treated her like shit for years and when he hid the fact that he was marrying Alicent. Fuck him. His guilt over Aemma’s death is the same reason he barely considers the green kids - they aren’t his lovers kid, no they’re just of a girl he groomed, ignored and emotionally abused. He’s so unnecessarily cruel, it pisses me off so much. At first glance, he looks like one of the guys who’s cool and stuff, but he’s such a hypocrite, an absent father, an abusive husband and a wife killer.
thinking about how aemond actually did not have to bring in alicent into discussion at all.
i mean, yes, she was the one person, the one parent, to take his side but the trauma of losing his eye to luke would have been enough for aemond to ask for luke’s eye as payment for his. he did not have to bring up his mother. and yet…
aemond choosing to say “i plan to make a gift of it to my mother”?? it screams of the fact that he did not forget about how fiercly she defended him, what could have happened to her and what did happen to her. how she had to beg for sympathy for him and how viserys humiliated her by not caring one bit about their child.
he also remembered how viserys said “and let it be known, anyone whose tongue dares to question the birth of princess rhaenyra’s sons should have it removed.” and he made sure to respond to this and to jace’s and luke’s taunting by implying they are bastards.
after losing an eye over an insult, to have viserys threaten to take his and aegon’s and alicent’s tongues? especially his mother’s who viserys was openly antagonizing? aemond was ready to put luke’s eye in a giftbox for her
i hope viserys is proud. regardless of what happened later, it was his ignorant crude and shameless nature that brought this war on.
definitely don’t imagine alicent going through an episode of feeling deeply lonely and also feeling guilty about it because her kids are right there and usually that is enough for her. definitely don’t imagine helaena noticing her mother being less engaged, less fussy, less in her space, which usually can be overwhelming for helaena. definitely don’t imagine all of them taking notice of how she starts keeping to herself and out of their way when she is usally so very involved in all of their lives.
so helaena first writes to daeron in oldtown and tells him that mother isn’t feeling her best and that maybe he should ask their uncle to escort him back to king’s landing for a few days. she knows daeron can never refuse her. she also knows daeron is always missing them in oldtown.
then asks aemond and aegon to meet her in her rooms. and even though aegon is many minutes late, he finally makes it. he seems concerned…. helaena doesn’t randomly call on him unless it concerns the children or something serious. he’s more often around these days but still not as much as he should be. he acts nonchalantly though, asking helaena what’s this about
helaena explains that something is up with mother. she doesn’t know what exactly, but she seems sad. at first aegon tries to jest about it, but he is helaena’s brother. as much of an idiot as aegon thought she was growing up together, helaena knows him. something changes in his eye.
aemond shows concern openly. he’s always been close to mother. she’s always been his best advocate. helaena understands that. he says he’s noticed too and says something ugly about their father who’s been hard to deal with lately, as illness takes over him more and more. aegon snorts, also saying something ugly about their father.
and then they decide to prepare a dinner for their mother. they rarely have dinner together anymore unless it’s a very important event because viserys is too ill, aegon is never fond of the idea and their mother finds herself buried under a ton of work.
even aegon doesn’t oppose the idea. helaena makes him promise to drink a proper amount, to not upset their mother. aegon gets a bit mad at her for assuming the worst of him, but he eventually nods.
helaena speaks to the kitchen maids and orders her mother’s favorite food and favorite deserts to be served. she also speaks to criston, who admits he too noticed that the queen barely smiles nowadays, preferring to throw herself into work and prayer.
helaena asks him if he can help her with ideas about what would cheer her mother up and criston doesn’t seem like he’s sure of what he should say, but he does eventually tell helaena that he thinks the queen would be most happy if she could spend more time with the prince jaehaerys and the princess jaehaera. he tells helaena that always brings a smile to her face.
helaena feels warm at the thought and nods to herself. she asks criston if he could talk to the smith about a necklace for her mother, handing him a piece of sapphire stone, one of the many that was gifted to them from faraway islands. it’s as blue as the one in aemond’s eye.
criston seems lost at first, but he takes the gem from helaena and nods, bowing his head to her as he leaves.
aemond is tasked with the important matter of making the most beautiful bouquet of flowers for their mother, full of roses and camelias.
helaena knows that aegon’s mere presence would be enough to make their mother happy (she just wants him present, she just wants him to care), but to helaena’s surprise, in the days close to the date they chose for the dinner, aegon shows her a painting that he ordered for her, one of her and the twins together in their rooms, dragon toys in hands as they giggled up at their grandmother. aegon asks if helaena thinks it resembles them all and helaena thinks it’s perfect.
daeron quickly lets her know he will arrive within two days on dragonback from oldtown to kings landing. he has received word that he can rest for the night at grassfield keep as tessarion cannot make the journey within a day. helaena is delighted and sets the dinner date for the exact date daeron is meant to arrive.
on that day, everything is set: everyone is wearing their best clothes, the twins are seated at the table next to where helaena would sit, aegon is thankfully on time, the flowers are set on the table, the food looks amazing, and criston is holding the necklace that helaena ordered and the painting that aegon comissioned, both wrapped beautifully by their maids. their grandfather has also brought a small gift that he sets on the table next to him until alicent arrives.
and just as helaena is about to start worrying, prince daeron walks in the dining room, all smiles just like helaena knows him. his brothers hug him, helaena does too, and the children are so very happy to see him. it’s a perfect timing too, as lord commander westerling is set to bring their mother to dinner soon.
Aemonds the type to try and convince himself he’s unfeeling, invulnerable, unbreakable. He tries to convince himself he doesn’t need nor feel anything about his family, besides maybe his mother and sister. But then something will happen, something threatens to take his family away, threatens to harm them and he is forced to face the reality that he does need them, he needs them alive and well because he’s scared to be alone.
Aegon is a nuisance, a drunk, a coward; he doesn’t need him, he tries to convince himself. He’s unfit for the crown yet their grandsire is convince he is their ticket to power, all while Aemond, the son who studies and trains and dedicates himself to maintaining the perfect image is sitting right there. He was convinced he would be better off without Aegon.
He’s convinced of that until Aegon’s life is balancing on a knife blade and their is nothing anyone, especially not little Aemond, can do about it. Aegon falls into his cups per usual, falls asleep in one of the many nooks within the castle, and his grandsire puts it upon himself to flush out the boy. Maybe Aegon was already worse for wear when Otto found him, maybe not, but one things for certain, Otto took it too far. He put on a display of punishing the boy right where he laid, throwing insults, kicking at him as he made little protest. dragging him up by his collar and a few locks of knotted white hair to scream in his face. Otto didn’t seem to question anything when his grandson slumped back down the wall without a sound,
Maybe Aemond finds him, jesting him as he usually does, until he realizes his brothers stillness or the awkward angle his head is resting against his chest. Maybe he feels his stomach drop as he too drops to his knees ans pull Aegon’s limp body into his lap, smoothing back his hair to find the bruises their grandsire left. Maybe he screams and keeps screaming, first for help, and then for his brother to wake up. Maybe he starts to grapple to his body, shaking his shoulders and slapping pale cheeks in an attempt to wake him. Maybe he throws his head to Aegon’s chest and listens to the feeble little flutter that is his heart as he waits what feels like a lifetime for someone to come.
Or maybe he is called into his brothers chamber in the middle of the night, given only enough information to put some pep in his step, but not enough to prepare him for the sight of his brother, lying there in bed, with his family there to give him a vigil. He wasn’t prepared for the bruises or the stillness or how slowly Aegon’s breathing is. He’s no idiot, he knows whats happened, its happened time and time again. But this time his brothers life is slipping away, and the man who’s taken it is standing in the corner.
No matter how it happens, Aemond never leaves Aegon’s side, he watches every breath, and keeps a hand pressed to his brother chest, right above his heart, coaxing it to keep beating, to keep him here a little longer. He yells some, mostly at Otto, some at his brother, even a little at his mother. He’s angry; his grandsire not only beat him while he was defenseless, but he left him there to die; his brothers bad habits were taking him away, the same habits Aemond had tried to get him to break time and time again only to get shoved away, and now Aegon was dying, it wasn’t fair; his mother kept trying to pull him away, tried to get him to go back to bed, to keep from seeing Aegon struggle to take a breath in after the next, when Aemond felt he belonged right where he was, pressed into his brothers side.
Eventually the room would settle, a heavy silence would drape over mourning figures, but no one would dare break it. Aemond spiraled into frantically whispered apologies, one arm wrapped around his brother, the other still planted above his heart. He’s be too tired to beg at this point, only whisper little words of encouragement or praise every now. He’d press little kisses to his brothers jaw and cheek and the corner of his lips, because they never exchanged such acts of love or affection with one another and this may be his last chance to do so. He tells him just how much he loves him, how much he needs him to stay, how they’ll do better, they’ll all do better (thats a lie, but he doesn’t know it yet), that he’ll protect him from Otto (he’s too young to know not only that he can’t protect Aegon, no matter how hard he tries, but even more so, that he shouldn’t have to). He clung to him as if he was Aegon’s only tie to the living world.
Days pass with little change, Aegon barely moves, barely breathes. He wakes for a few short moments, his eyes falling on Aemond before rolling back into his skull with a sad sigh. His fingers twitch around his little brothers every once and a while, and it gives him hope.
He sits with his mom as she brushes out Aegon’s hair, helping with his own nimble fingers, the two working in silence until the all of Aegon’s hair is nicely laid out on the pillow. He and Helaena watch over him night after night, barely speaking, yet they both seemed to know what the other was thinking, acting in unison to care for their sickly big brother. Their father joins them, only in the passing our and for a few moments at a time, those moments so heavy and awkward its the only time Aemond thinks of fleeing the room. Viserys looks over his child, his blood, with barely hid disdain. The first time he visits he barely manages to touch him, to comb back his hair and pat his chest before leaving. Otto has been barred from the room (per multiple, loud, requests from Aemond) but it doesn’t stop him from lurking outside the door, staring at him with an expression that Aemond couldn’t place, but one that made his entire body go aflame with anger.
Even his half sister and her boys showed up. Jace was the first to find his way to Aegons chamber, not saying a word, but rather, he took the clasped hands of both blonde boys in his own, sitting on the edge of the bed sniffling. Surprisingly, Aemond wasn’t upset with this intrusion, Jace’s warm touch didn’t sting like others did, and Aegon perked up when Jace began to talk to him lightly. Eventually peace was broken, Luke and both mothers joined them, creating all sorts of noise, but Jace’s hand never left Aemonds. He focused on that when all else was wrong in the room, when his half sister got a bit to close for comfort (she was barely their sister, just someone who ignored them and put them in danger), when luke started playing dumb and asking stupid questions (luke was given a liberty Aemond would come to understand many years down the line, one he one yearn for, that liberty was being allowed to grow up innocent. Luke didn’t understand The Stranger could come for someone so young, who had never seen battle, who looked just fine), even when people tried to get him to move, Jace’s hand stayed clasped to his, and it was all ok.
it would take weeks for Aegon to fully recover; he didn’t wake for almost a week, didn’t get up on his own for 2. His head ached and he couldn’t seem to find his balance, not to mention the weight he had already lost paired with his uncooperative stomach, or the breathlessness and chest pain. Maesters from all over Westeros came to treat with no avail, but he had his brother and he had Jace, he knew that even through the constant fog that plauged him.

Concept for a HotD fic that I wanna write:
Viserys passes within days of Daeron's birth and the distress spirals into Alicent dying in childbirth. Daeron makes it of course but all four of Rhaenyra's siblings, plus herself, are now orphaned and now she has to ascend the throne. Thankfully Lyonel is Hand and makes sure her coronation is well handled, Rhaenyra is crowned with Laenor at her side as King Consort.
The young queen agonizes over what to do about her siblings. Aegon is a little boy but old enough to know and remember his parents and Heleana is just passed her third nameday. But Aemond is less than a year old and Daeron's only glimpse of his mother was of her dying. She considers the fact of her own child in her belly and how these children pose a challenge to her rule. But they are all that's left of her father and her girlhood friend. She will not abandon them.
No, they are her family and they need a mother.
Her first true act as queen is to adopt her siblings and raise them as her own. Many question the wisdom of such a choice, especially when she births a dark haired son. The whispers begin but she is not swayed, Jacaerys is her heir. Born of her body. And any who speak against him will be tried for treason.
She does worry that her siblings will feel neglected with the new baby, though. She spends many a day with them in the nursery. Placing Jacaerys and Daeron in the same cradle to foster closeness. She does not ask Aegon or Heleana to call her mother, but Aemond who hasn't yet spoken reaches for her hand one day and utters the phrase:
"You look sleepy, mama. Nap time?"
It breaks something in her to hear a chubby babe call her mama. She tells him that babies just take a lot of work and so does being a queen. She's struggling to balance the work of being queen with being a mother but the way Aemond crawls into her lap and insists it's nap time in the most serious of tones makes her fall in love. Aegon and Heleana soon follow in calling her mama, the months that come.
Aegon shyly tugging her skirt as she makes to head to a small council meeting. "Can I come too? Can I help, mama?" She walks into the small council chambers holding her seven year old adopted son's hand. He serves as her cupbearer after that.
Rhaenyra finds out that Heleana has been waking up crying for mama and the maids have thought that she just missed her mother. Rhaenyra asks who she's crying for one afternoon and Heleana just holds her arms out to be held.
Even as she births her second son a year after the first, she continues to dote upon her adopted children. She learns to tend their needs, as does Laenor. Her husband is found with Aegon passed out on his shoulders after sword practice quite often and takes Aemond flying on Seasmoke. The first word that Daeron speaks is 'papa'. Rhaenyra realizes that Laenor has fallen just as in love with them as she has.
Their family grows closer and better loved by the year. Rhaenyra gets to raise her family. Even with all the mixed emotions and the weight of the crown, she will not fail these children as her father failed her.
This is heartbreaking and healing at the same time!
Thank you for blessing us with this!
the thing about me is that I fucking LOVE dysfunctional families, so yes the greens have my heart
