It's not true.

There's a book called Rapunzel's World, which claims to be the ultimate guide to the series (even though it only covers season 1). In that book, there's a section headed "The Ruddiger Family," which talks about Varian, Quirin and Ruddiger.

However, when the book came out and the fandom was questioning this, the showrunner confirmed that it was an error.

cassandra: she would def listen to heavy metal like metallica, nirvana, deftones, etc

lance: i feel like he’d be into indie music like wallows, coin, clairo, malcolm todd, the neighborhood

varian: i think varian would be into soft rock music like oasis, the smiths, the beatles but also maybe a little bit of nirvana and metallica whenever he feels like it
