The costumes from the Obscurity Parade set are all named after the latin names of different bugs. Kanade's costume is called Xylocopa, the scientific name for carpenter bees; Mafuyu's costume is called bombyx mori, the name for domestic silk moths; Ena's costume is called Papilionidae, the name for swallowtail butterflies.

the way ena always circumvents getting portrayed as a doll. in marionette she was only a 2 star. in kana6 she's posed naturally and not displayed on a platform. and in the new not-wday set she's specifically called a puppeteer. her autonomy is just immutable.
hit with another wave of sadness for ena. she idolized her father. she wanted to be just like him. being "the daughter of an artist" was once central to her identity.
what he said to her that day did far more than just crush her dreams. she only ever bonded with him over art, so when he shut her out of that world, they stopped having a bond. art is all he cares about, so if she's not worthy of being an artist, she's not worthy of his care.
in blank canvas, she's afraid niigo will leave her behind if she doesn't improve. she's afraid they, like her father, might decide she's not enough.

The event logos for And Now, the Ribbon Is Tied and Next to the Unchanging Warmth feature the same flowers and a similar ribbon design. Both events have a focus on Mizuki's relationship with her sister, Yuuki.

the cherry blossoms guys... turning a symbol of impermanence into a symbol of forever. reshaping the narrative. they mean whatever we want them to mean. they may only bloom for a short time, but they come back every year. and every year, we can go see them together. friendship isn't deserved, it's desired. beauty, happiness, and love aren't transient. they're perennial.
the way that the back 2d model was first used to convey that mizuki couldn't face ena, but now it's being used to show definitively that they are facing each other and forming a deeper connection. bro who decided to put cinematography in a visual novel 😭😭
another detail that goes hand in hand with this is that there's no internal monologue during their whole conversation, because that only ever happens for the audience's benefit. so like the over the shoulder shots, this choice conveys that the scene isn't for us, it's for them. hearing their thoughts wouldn't add anything here anyway. no need to peek at their hand when all the cards are on the table already.
they're both laying themselves completely bare for each other. and we're just lucky enough to get to watch.
why everything ena said in the alleyway scene was a work of pure genius:
the key is that she doesn't ever say what she thinks will best get through to mizuki, she just says what she genuinely believes. that's the kind of person she is, and her unfiltered honesty is exactly what mizuki needed. it's smart because it's not smart.
she's like, yeah i'm going to worry and try my hardest to be kind to you, but it's because i want to, and i don't care if you think it's fake. that's the opposite of changing how she is to be overly considerate of mizuki's feelings. she's screaming for most of the scene and outright calls mizuki stupid multiple times. not "kind," not careful. it's almost circular logic that ends up not only disproving, but completely nullifying mizuki's worst fears.
something i didn't get when i first read mizu5 is when mizuki explains that worst case scenario, it's through a distorted lens. it's not that her friends would make her think their kindness is genuine and nothing has changed. it's that she'd make herself think their kindness is fake and something has changed. because she thinks for her to truly be loved, the scales of justice in the world would have to be out of balance.
its a hopelessly tangled up knot of trauma and self-loathing that i don't think anyone could have untied. what ena did instead was cut right through it.
meiko always acts in service of what mizuki believes in that moment to be her best interest. or, in service of mizuki's most natural and instinctive desire.
in foosteps, that is to self-isolate, to keep her secret distance and avoid any suspicion that something might be wrong with her. hence, "talking will make things worse." for now, meiko's and mizuki's actions are aligned. it is effectively them against ena.
where it gets interesting is when they start to diverge. when mizuki doesn't act in her own best interest. in path of thorns, mizuki's natural desire is for things to stay the same. so meiko suggests, one last time, that she do nothing, that way nothing will change. mizuki doesn't listen, because her other, nobler desire is to move forward, to trust her friends with the secret. but she doesn't believe it'll end well for her, that's why it's meiko's role to try and stop it.
and finally, in wounded hands, mizuki deep down wants to reunite with ena, she knows that's what's best for her. so meiko spends the entire event pushing them together from both sides. and she's once again working against mizuki, who doesn't think she deserves the best. but when meiko convinces her to stop running, that's mizuki's own desire speaking. and it's in accepting that desire, buried deeper than any other, that she finds her salvation.
The costumes from the That flower, once more set incorporate a butterfly motif. The butterfly has been a recurring symbol for Mizuki, with her hairbow from her original unit outfit being shaped like a butterfly. That hairbow is used as her main symbol on merchandise, and in-game, with things like her virtual live effect and the logos for My Footprints, Your Destination, Our Escape for Survival, Where Does the Path of Thorns Go?, and With Our Hands, Covered in Wounds.
The butterfly emoji is also the official emoji for the Where Does the Path of Thorns Go? event, as used by the official twitter.
The use of this motif could very likely be linked to the butterfly's use as a transgender symbol, due to how it transforms from a caterpillar into a butterfly. This would also make sense in the context of its usage as the emoji for the Where Does the Path of Thorns Go? event, since it involved Mizuki deciding to come out to the other 25-ji, Nightcord de. members before things went wrong.
