Do you ever hear a song and just think "this should play during the credits sequence of my life"
i prefer guys who make small dick jokes about themselves over guys who make big dick jokes about themselves
I got a medium dick
It can talk to ghosts
I nearly spat out my tea
Spanish phonology: There are a few anomalies, but for the most part just learn the letters and you'll be fine.
Dutch phonology: sometimes consonants are vocalized, so learn that. Also, there are quite a few different dialects.
French phonology: Consonants at the end are silent. Except for these consonants. Oh and these words don't follow that rule. And don't trust vowels. They're not what they say they are.
English phonology: We've had so many vowel shifts and incorporated so many loanwords that any system we once had is mostly gone. Good luck.
Irish phonology: Go fuck yourself.
you used to call me on my hands-free talking glove
I’m just wondering how they can possibly market this as hands-free
þ!
A feature of English which I think is stupid,
If we’re carrying on with this game,
Is how we abolished the thorn and replaced it,
With two letters that meant the same.
The þ was a letter, amazing, astounding,
Perfect in every respect,
Representing the ‘th’ sound and shortening words,
The one thing it didn’t expect;
One day T and H went and burgled its meaning,
And then, thanks to the printing press,
Its symbol mutated and morphed into Y,
Which is pointless, I must confess.
Þoughtlessly, the þ was forgotten,
Þreatened as the language evolved,
Þankful for þose who knew of old English,
A topic where it was involved.
It only survived in Modern Icelandic,
In English it’s treated with scorn,
And as barely anyone knows it exists,
Please try to remember the thorn.
ð!
Saving the thorn from obscurity is surely a laudable aim but if this letter deserves our praise the eth should receive the same.
The scribes of the Anglo-Saxons interchanged the eth and thorn until the first one fell from use and the second was left forlorn,
But for the modern Icelander their roles are more defined and could improve our English texts if we were so inclined.
The thorn (Þ, þ) denotes a voiceless dental fricative as in the English ‘think’ or ‘thresh’ but not the ‘th’ in ‘hither,’ whereas the eth (Ð, ð) is a voiced dental fricative perfect for ‘this’ and ‘that’ and most especially for ‘thither.’
So I propose ðey boþ be used in the Icelandic manner; ðen students won’t be loaþ to learn our spelling and our grammar.
To þink we’ve never fixed ðis mess is really quite astounding. One letter cluster for two sounds? Ðat’s damnably confounding!
Linguistics, my old friend.
Donna: Every year on Thanksgiving, the President pardons a turkey. CJ: He pardons a turkey? Donna: Yeah, and it’s your event, so…
I’m still convinced the writers of Psych sat around a table and drew random words from a hat.. “I got roller skates” “Well I got spanish soap opera” or “ Who put cat witness in the hat?” “Not me I put bigfoot and sea lion”
Humans Are Weird
So there has been a bit of “what if humans were the weird ones?” going around tumblr at the moment and Earth Day got me thinking. Earth is a wonky place, the axis tilts, the orbit wobbles, and the ground spews molten rock for goodness sakes. What if what makes humans weird is just our capacity to survive? What if all the other life bearing planets are these mild, Mediterranean climates with no seasons, no tectonic plates, and no intense weather?
What if several species (including humans) land on a world and the humans are all “SCORE! Earth like world! Let’s get exploring before we get out competed!” And the planet starts offing the other aliens right and left, electric storms, hypothermia, tornadoes and the humans are just … there… counting seconds between flashes, having snowball fights, and just surviving.
To paraphrase one of my favorite bits of a ‘humans are awesome’ fiction megapost: “you don’t know you’re from a Death World until you leave it.” For a ton of reasons, I really like the idea of Earth being Space Australia.
Earth being Space Australia Words cannot express how much I love these posts
Alien: “I’m sorry, what did you just say your comfortable temperature range is?”
Human: “Honestly we can tolerate anywhere from -40 to 50 Celcius, but we prefer the 0 to 30 range.”
Alien: “……. I’m sorry, did you just list temperatures below freezing?”
Human: “Yeah, but most of us prefer to throw on scarves or jackets at those temperatures it can be a bit nippy.”
Other human: “Nah mate, I knew this guy in college who refused to wear anything past his knees and elbows until it was -20 at least.”
Human: “Heh. Yeah everybody knows someone like that.”
Alien: “……. And did you also say 50 Celcius? As in, half way to boiling?”
Human: “Eugh. Yes. It sucks, we sweat everywhere, and god help you if you touch a seatbelt buckle, but yes.”
Alien: “……. We’ve got like 50 uninhabitable planets we think you might enjoy.”
“You’re telling me that you have… settlements. On islands with active volcanism?” “Well, yeah. I’m not about to tell Iceland and Hawaii how to live their lives. Actually, it’s kind of a tourist attraction.” “What, the molten rock?” “Well, yeah! It’s not every day you see a mountain spew out liquid rocks! The best one is Yellowstone, though. All these hot springs and geysers from the supervolcano–” “You ACTIVELY SEEK OUT ACTIVE SUPERVOLCANOES?” “Shit, man, we swim in the groundwater near them.”
Sounds like the “Damned” trilogy by Alan Dean Foster.
“And you say the poles of your world would get as low as negative one hundred with wind chill?”
“Yup, with blizzards you cant see through every other day just about.”
“Amazing! when did you manage to send drones that could survive such temperatures?”
“… well, actually…”
“… what?”
“…we kinda……. sent……….. people…..”
“…”
“…”
“…what?”
“we sent-”
“no yeah I heard you I just- what? You sent… HUMANS… to a place one hundred degrees below freezing?”
“y-yeah”
“and they didn’t… die?”
“Well the first few did”
“PEOPLE DIED OF THE COLD AND YOUR SOLUTION WAS TO SEND MORE PEOPLE???!?!?!?”
My new favorite Humans are Weird quote
“PEOPLE DIED OF THE COLD AND YOUR SOLUTION WAS TO SEND MORE PEOPLE?”
aka The History of Russia
aka Arctic Exploration
aka The History of Alaska
The thing that frustrates me most about prehistoric American archaeology is the obsession with assigning cultures to projectile points with a 1:1 ratio. We have clovis for years and we call it Clovis Culture™ and then a different point appears and suddenly we’re like “Clovis people were not alone! There must have been multiple migrations!”
First of all, no shit. Spoiler alert for history, there are ALWAYS multiple migrations. But secondly, that’s your evidence? There are exactly two cultures in North America because there are exactly two types of projectile point? If all that survives of modern humanity is ceramic toilets, then future archaeologists using the same technique would deduce that there were two maybe three cultures on Earth. What bullshit. Ideas, especially good ideas, travel faster and further than people.
i put “All I Want for Christmas is You” through a MIDI converter, and then back through an mp3 converter
the result is this garbage
I’m driving myself up the wall because I swear I can hear the vocal line but I don’t know how that could be if it was truly converted to MIDI. Unless you can replicate speech sounds entirely with modulated MIDI notes, in which case I’m actually impressed with this tire fire of an MP3.

this calls for AIR GUITAR
weak
just a warning based off something i saw on twitter recently:
BE VERY CAREFUL IF YOU SEE FASCIST STICKERS/POSTERS
DO NOT PULL THEM DOWN WITH YOUR HANDS
it’s not uncommon that the scum who put that stuff up will tape razors to the back/edges in order to injure anyone who pulls them off:
the safest way to deal with fash propaganda is to cover it up or deface it
if you’re going to take them down, use something like a coin or sharp edge rather than your fingers
BE SAFE WHEN REMOVING PROPAGANDA
who is putting these weird fucking clickbait ads on tumblr anyway
the answer may shock you
Yes, Joe. (via hansmollman)
