He favored "interventionist" overseas policy, including the war with Iran, and he supported President Trump, but the big thing you need to know is that he blocked Obama's nomination of Merrick Garland to the Supreme Court. Short version: Instead of voting "no," the Republicans stalled for almost a year so that Trump would get Obama's turn. We got Gorsuch instead of Garland and a Supreme Court that's 6-3 conservative instead of 5-4.

The governor of South Carolina will appoint a temporary senator. The seat was already up for election in November, so this doesn't change the numbers in the 2026 midterms.
