A.N.- Hello! Tis I, Treeffles, coming back at you with yet another account, this time for my beloved Bucky. I can do pretty much any time frame Buck can be found in, and yes, that includes his Winter Soilder days. That being said, I'm not comfortable with explicit adult content, and that's pretty much the only thing I won't do. I am an adult of almost 30, and I do have a full time job to attend to, so responses will be irregular, but I absolutely will get back to you. No....please...stop, not again, Bucky mumbled in his sleep. This was how it usually went. He'd have a tough time falling asleep, then a hard time staying asleep, and if he did manage to stay asleep, it ended in nightmares. Usually it was either things HYDRA had forced him to do during his time as the Winter Soldier, or the things they'd forced on him.

Tonight was no different.

He awoke with a start, his chest heaving from the adrenaline pumping through his system. He glanced around like a wild animal, terrified that he'd wake up and be in their clutches again. When his brain calmed down enough tha t he could tell where he was, he got up, stumbled to the bathroom, proceeded to vomit, and when he was done, shakily walked out of the bathroom and froze. There was a presence in the living room that hadn't been there when he'd woken up, and it was one that he wasn't sure if he recognized. It was hard to trust his own mind these days.

Checking the time Peter saw he only had half an hour left of his shift and he’d sent Bucky a message to meet him for their subs. He wasn’t sure yet what Bucky would prefer in his so he made his own and set aside some cookies with it to wait for him to arrive.

Pausing to stroke Murphy a few times he chatted happily with regulars checking the door each time the bell rung to see if it was his friend.

He manages to find the shop with little issue; he's just a little late. He walks through the door about fifteen minutes after Peter had sent his last message. Bucky honestly liked the kid. He wasn't used to having people around that understood him, but Peter seemed to get it. It was nice. Bucky sees him behind the counter and gives a half wave as he walks in.

Seeing Bucky walk in he grinned and waved handing over the coffee to the customer he was serving before walking along the counter to greet him.

“Hey! It’s great to see you. This is Murphy I was telling you about”

Pointing to the fluffy cat lounging on a cushion he gave him a quick pet before washing his hands ready to make up their subs.

He held out a hand to the cat, letting him sniff him. "Seems like a good shop cat," he says, scratching Murphy behind the ear. "What's on the menu then, Chef?" he asks with a lighthearted grin.

“He’s a local legend really” He grinned seeing Murphy loving all the attention and looked down at what ingredients he had.

“Well my favorite is double cheese with triple pickles and toasted but I think you’re more of a chicken guy right? Maybe chicken and honey mustard mayo”

Looking up at Bucky he smiled happy to see him looking okay after he’d mentioned having a hard time.

He contemplates that for a second. "Add double cheese to mine too and I'll give it a try."

As soon as Peter's back is turned, he lets the smile fall from his face. He's gotten really good at faking it until he can't anymore. More of the training I can't get rid of even if I wanted to, he thinks to himself. His brooding is interrupted by Murphy headbutting his hand for more affection.

“A double cheese guy too! Perfect”

Making the sub he wrapped it perfectly in foil and added it to the bag with his own and the cookies from earlier before turning back to see Murphy demanding more attention.

“He approves of you that’s always a honour”

Smiling at the cat he pointed to the sodas in the fridge.

“Do you want soda or coffee? Maybe even both? Coffee now soda later?”

"Yeah, well, I think I've always been fond of cats. Remember feeding the strays outside in the alley when I had a little extra. Wasn't often, but I think they still appreciated it."

He ruffles the fur on Murphy's head, debating on what he wanted. Decision making is hard for him, so it takes him a second to respond. "Probably coffee now, soda later."

“Cats are the best”

Putting some sodas into the bag he made their coffees greeting his co worker who’d come to take over his shift. Chatting to her as he put on the lids he made a fuss over Murphy before getting his jacket and the bag of good joining Bucky on the other side of the counter.

“Want to head to the park to eat? I know a peaceful spot to sit”

"They really are."

He shrugs. "Entirely up to you. I'm just here for the food," he states with a lopsided grin, trying to be obvious about the fact that he's messing with him.

“Just the food!”

Looking over at Bucky he laughed seeing his grin realising he was joking about that. Leading the way through the side streets to a small park area he sat down on a bench putting the bag beside him to hand out their food.

“You need to get someone who can afford the big time restaurants to pull that off successfully. I’m barely scraping by rent each month”

He followed, trying to ignore the sounds of the city that were inevitable when living in the area. Luckily the side streets were quieter, so he had less of a hard time; Bucky was grateful for that.

He sat down too, and leaned back on the bench with a sigh to stare at the clouds. They were starting to go grey, indicating there was bad weather on the horizon. Hopefully not before they finished their food though.

"Hey trust me, I get that. You know what it's like bein' two pennies short for a loaf of bread and having the shopkeeper just look at you with pity? I hate that feeling..."

Getting comfortable on the bench he handed Bucky his sub and nodded sipping his coffee as he listened to him. He knew the pitying look well and had seen it a lot as a young child.

“You know it’s sad that it’s been a long time and still that’s so true for a lot of people. When I was a kid my aunt used to ask me to put back things in the supermarket and we’d get that look. She always hated it. We had enough we just couldn’t have the luxuries.”

Putting his coffee cup down he unwrapped his sub checking it was cool enough to bite and he wouldn’t burn his lip again like before.

He took the sub with a nod of thanks, setting it in his lap as he sipped his coffee.

"Then you were on the lucky side of things. Barely scraping by in the 30's was....not great, we'll put it that way."

He took another sip of coffee and unwrapped his sub.

Nodding he knew Bucky was right there. He couldn’t imagine the struggles people had back then and with the thread of war hanging over them as well. It was a lot to comprehend.

“I had a good childhood, not the best sure but I was loved and that’s the most important thing really.”

Watching Bucky sip the coffee he smiled softly enjoying his company. It was nice to talk to someone who just understood him without having to explain it all.

“Is it weird to be in a world so different to what you knew?”

"Yeah," he said with a gentle nod. "Yeah I'd agree with that. Always easier knowing you can come home to those who love you..." He trailed off, eyes becoming unfocused as the countless friends and family that he'd loved and lost flashed across his mind.

Bucky shook his head, trying to clear the thoughts, and took a bite of his sub. He looked at Peter with a surprised grin. "Well damn, these have gotten better. And yeah, sometimes it is weird. I mean, I was frozen for a good portion of technological advancements, so I get confused by some of them. Like microwaves? Wild stuff," he laughed, taking yet another long sip of his coffee.

Seeing Bucky enjoying the sub he smiled proudly. He’d played around with the flavours since starting at Delmars and was proud of the positive comments he got over them.

“It’s good because I made it. The honey mustard really goes well with chicken. I want to find a better cheese for it next.”

Eating his own he lent back on the bench happily. He loved seeing someone enjoy something he’d made. He felt the same over his products he’d patented with a few of the tech companies.

"It really does. I'm not usually a big honey mustard guy, but it's not bad on this."

He glanced over at Peter, grinning in response when he saw how proud his comment had made the kid. "So. Tell me what it's been like growin' up in the 'age of technology', will ya? Old man is curious about what you kids have done in this day and age."

“It’s been a lot! Phones have become really advanced. I love having a camera in my pocket all the time. I like taking photos of the views from the bridges. Um…I don’t really like social media I think that was a bad change. Scientific advancements really excite me. I’m always looking to see what changes are coming with that too. It’s my passion”

Pausing his ate is sub thinking of what else he’d seen that Bucky might not have during his moments of being asleep.

“Space was wild! I didn’t think I’d ever end up in space”

"Yeah no kidding. Pocket cameras with access to the internet. A sentence I never would have thought I'd say," he said, shaking his head with a laugh. "Got anything recommendations on stuff i should look into? I get kinda bored, so science is definitely somethin' I'd like to read up on."

Humming softly he thought about what would interest Bucky most. There had been a lot of advancements but some of it could be boring to look into deeply.

“String theory might interest you. That’s a way of understanding the multiverse theory and something we’ve had experience of too so it’s relatable. You could always watch the classic sci-fi films too. Alien is great and ET, it’s old but I loved that as a kid”

"Seen ET, thought it was good. Not something I'd watch on a regular basis, but it was good. I've heard of Alien, but it hasn't made its way onto the list yet."

He finished his food, and his drink, crumpled up the wrapper and stuffed it into the cup; quick and easy trash disposal.

"I dunno if I want to understand the science behind what happened," he said after a moment of silence. "But it's not a bad idea. Maybe I will look into it at some point."

“We could have a weekly movie night and I’ll introduce you to the classics. Jaws is my favorite because it’s crazy and dumb but a great watch. They even made a mechanical shark to film it which is crazy”

Watching Bucky he smiled and finished his coffee holding out the bag of cookies for him.

“Do you have to eat a lot of calories with the serum? I do and it’s a pain in my ass and wallet. Back when I had a good lab I was working on enhanced protein pills to try and make it easier”

Bucky shrugged slightly, mulling over the idea. "I could be persuaded. Does it involve snacks and popcorn?"

He eyed the cookies, then stuck his hand in the bag and grabbed one.

"I probably should eat more, but Hydra kinda starved me for the most part, so I don't really eat much. Guess I never really got over that..."

“Yeah! You can’t have a movie night without snacks. We can get nachos and popcorn. They’re great snacks. I know how you feel. Mr Stark worked out I needed 5000 calories a day with my crazy metabolism but it’s so hard to eat all that or even afford it. He helped me work on the supplements idea but then space happened and things got wild. I need to get back to it soon. I think they’d help you too”

"Yeah...the whole space thing was...something..." His voice trailed off again, clearly wanting to avoid the topic. There were things that happened that he still wasn't ready to face.

"Depending on the movie you pick, I could try and do weekly movie nights. But if you pick somethin' awful and make me watch it anyways, I might not come back."

Noticing the change in Bucky’s heart rate and his hesitation he glanced over at him realising space might not be a good choice. He laughed at the thought of Bucky walking out on a bad movie.

“If you don’t like a choice we can always pick something else. There’s so many on streaming now you don’t have to suffer through something you don’t like”

It was a shame, really. Because before the war, space was so cool and fascinating to Bucky. He used to love the idea of maybe going up there one day. Now, it just left a dull ache in his chest.

"There's too many choices on streaming. It gets confusing and it's hard to navigate. Which is why I'm leaving that part up to you."

Laughing softly he took a cookie out of the bag and sat back watching Bucky as he ate it. It was amusing how Bucky could get almost grumpy over modern tech. Peter understood how confusing it could all be though. He couldn’t imagine waking up fifty years in the future and coping any better.

“Hey! Want to come over tonight? We could watch a couple of tv shows if there’s not time for a full movie?”

Bucky thought about it for a second while he munched on his cookie. Then he shrugged nonchalantly and replied, "Sure, why not. I dont have anything going on tonight."

He smiled happily as Bucky accepted the invite and shared out the last of the cookies between them putting the empty bag on the bench beside him.

“Great! I’m off tomorrow too so we can watch a lot of episodes of we find a good show. Hey! Have you seen the lord of the rings films? They’re a great watch”

"I haven't seen it, but I've read it," he stated, munching on the last bit of the cookies. "I've heard they're pretty long too. We'd probably have to set aside an entire day for that." He paused, glancing over at the kid. "You sound like you've got a show you're thinkin' of. What is it?"

“You’ve read it! That’s so cool I can’t really imagine you settled down reading a book but that’s cool. I read a lot as a child and I take a book on stake outs to have something to do. There’s a few shows I think you’d like but I don’t want to pick one you won’t enjoy”

Bucky deadpanned at him. "Peter, you do realize I was around when The Hobbit first came out, right? I was around in 1937. Of course I've read Lord of the Rings. Reading is one of the only things that distracts me enough to relax."

He laughed softly, and for once it was genuine. "Gimme some titles and I'll tell ya what sounds interesting. "

Laughing at Bucky’s expression he looked over at him realising that he really had lived through a lot of good things as well as bad.

“Oh yeah! I can’t imagine people being around for those books actually coming out as new. I was born 2001 so I didn’t even see the last millennium and you’d had like loads of cool decades and things. I haven’t read the Hobbit i could do that one next”

"Its a long read, but its good. Should definitely put it on your list." Bucky paused for a second, realizing just how young Peter was. Like, he knew the kid was young but not quite that young. "Pretty sure I was still in cryo for that year. I think before that, the last time I'd been awake was '91. That makes you how old now?"

“You missed all the 90s? That sucks I read they were really cool years to live through. All the classic movies are from the 90s too. I got blipped so I’m 19 with the missing five years I was dust for. That’s still weird to think about. It was minutes for me but five years passed, crazy!”

"Yeah, well, '91 wasn't exactly a good year for me, so I'm okay with having missed the rest of it."

Holy shit, the kid wasn't even twenty yet? And he'd already been through that much? A part of Bucky's soul ached for Peter; he remembered being that young and going through as much as he did. It was upsetting to him, to say the least.

"Got blipped too. I think that puts me around 101 without that time. Not sure, but I think that's right. I just know I'm too old for this stuff now."

“101! Wow if you’ve have been around for all those years you’d be super old and have a big celebration. I think you can just count the awake years though so you get to shave a few off that, unless you feel 101 then I’d say embrace it! You look handsome for 101”

"If we did that, I'd be closer to being in my mid-thirties. Which, honestly, I don't know how old I feel. Some days I definitely feel the full 101. That bootleg serum I got doesn't do anything for the constant pain my body is in." He smirked a little at the comment of him being handsome for being over 100 years old. "Thanks, kid. I appreciate that."

He could feel the rain starting to move in; he didn't feel like getting drenched in a possible downpour. He got up, took his trash to the nearest receptacle, then came back. "Not sure what you've got planned for the rest of the day, but I think it might be better to move indoors either way. Being cold and wet isn't how I plan on spending the rest of mine."

“You’re in pain! You should give me a blood sample. I can see if my medication I’m working on would be compliant with the serum you have. If you’re enhanced similar to how I am it should work. I just need to rule out some side effects”

Looking up at the clouds he hummed softly seeing how gray they were getting. Bucky was right it looked like they risked getting wet staying there.”

“Yeah let’s go to my place. We can watch a show and write up a watch list”

Hopping up off the bench he put their wrappers in the bin and made sure he had his wallet and backpack.

Bucky scoffed lightly. "While I appreciate the offer, I think I've had enough of my blood stolen over the years. I'll keep it to myself for now." He wasn't too worried about the pain, at least not today. It was something he'd learned to deal with over the years.

"Sure. Works for me." He stuffed his hands in his pockets and waited on Peter to lead the way.

Getting up off the bench he smiled and put his hands in his pockets to keep them still and waited for Bucky to be ready.

“It’s not stealing if you donate it but I won’t force you. Im lucky I can experiment on myself but I wouldn’t like someone else fussing with me”

Once Bucky was ready he took him back to his apartment. It was a basic apartment but he’d made it feel cosy with blankets and cushions. Dropping his bag by the door he sat down on the couch. A half repaired suit was laying over the table with a sewing machine beside it.

“Let me know if you want a coffee”

"Yeah, no thanks. If that changes, you'll be the first to know," he stated with a smirk. "Well, technically the second. I'll be the first to know."

He followed Peter to his apartment, and was courteous enough to remove his shoes before stepping further inside. He glanced around the small apartment; it wasn't much bigger than his own, if at all bigger. Peter seemed to be doing okay for himself, and for that, Bucky was glad.

He looked over at the kid and just said, "I've never turned down free coffee in my life, and I don't plan to start now. But you don't have to get it right this second. Relax for a minute. I can wait."

Nodding softly he sat back relaxing as Bucky said he should. It had been a long time since he’d had company in his tiny apartment and he was excited and nervous in equal measure.

“Sorry, my aunt used to say about being a good host and making people feel welcome. It’s been a long time since I had someone come over.”

"My ma used to say the same thing, but we didn't usually have anyone over that wasn't family, and they were all used to our antics," he said with a soft laugh.

He wandered over to a bookcase that had a bunch of knick knacks and photos on it. He picked up a photo frame that was of Peter and, he assumed, his aunt. Judging from the photo, she seemed to have loved Peter a lot. Bucky set the photo back down and glanced over at Peter. "Can I ask what happened? You make it sound like she's not around anymore. You have a falling out or...?" He didn't finish his sentence. He had a feeling the kid knew what he meant.

He laughed softly at the thought of a family so fun it had antics that were well known about. He’d always had such a small family and it just got smaller and smaller over the years. Taking a deep breath he watched Bucky with the photo.

“She um..she died. I had a run in with a villain, guy who called himself the goblin and he attacked my friends apartment block where we were staying to be safe. She died in the attack. I miss her a lot. After my parents and uncle died she was all I had and now it’s just me”

Leaning back into the couch he curled up into himself looking his age when he was so small.

Bucky nodded solemnly; he knew what that was like. His own family had all passed on thinking he'd died in the war. One part of him was glad that they never found out what he'd become. The other part of him missed them all dearly. He knew he had family still around, but they didn't know him aside from what they'd heard on the news or read in a museum. Which, for the record, wasn't great. He'd never reached out to them because of it.

He came over and sat down next to Peter with a sigh. "Yeah, but you've still got your friends, right?" Damn, the kid looked so tiny. Reminded him of someone else he used to know. He banished the thought almost instantly. No reason continuing to be sad about someone who didn't want him around anymore. "That at least helps, don't it?"

“Ah they’re away in Boston at MIT so I don’t get to see them much. I have my work though and Delmar looks out for me. When I’m out in the suit I get a lot of attention too so there’s that but it has been lonely”

Looking up as Bucky sat down he could tell he understood him from the expression on his face. It was a comfort to know someone else could relate to him even in the saddest of situations.

"Mmm, okay I getchya. Well," he paused for a moment. "I guess you're not the only one that's on the lonely side of things..."

Bucky sighed, glancing over at Peter. "When Steve left," he confessed. "I wasn't sure where to go from there. We'd spent so long fighting to get back to each other throughout the decades that...that him leaving was like a piece of my soul broke. And I haven't figured out how to fix that yet. I mean, sure, Sam is around, but we aren't...really on speaking terms right now. And everyone else I knew is dead, so..." Bucky's voice trailed off, leaving nothing but silence between them for a minute or two. "I guess we can be a couple of lonely guys together, huh?" He said with a light nudge against Peter's shoulder.

Nodding as Bucky understood him he listened to him with a soft smile as he explained. He’d heard a lot of Bucky’s and Steve’s story in the history books and at school but he knew they wouldn’t have been able to touch on the personal moments and the true heart of what they’d had.

“I don’t know everything you went through but I knew how close you were and it was a really weird choice to just ..leave like that.”

Laughing at the nudge he grinned and nodded.

“We can, I really enjoy spending time with you and you understand me almost without words. That means a lot”

"Yeah....weird is definitely the right word for it." Bucky's tone was bitter. He still was hurt by that choice, even though he was doing his best not to show it. All those years, for a girl his best friend hardly knew. Bucky shook his head to clear it. No point in dwelling on it. What was done was done, and he couldn't change that. Steve was gone, and Bucky had to learn to live without him.

"Don't mind spendin' time with you either. You're easy to get along with. And words aren't always needed to communicate."

Hearing the pain in Bucky’s voice he lent over and hugged him. He didn’t say anything just tried to comfort him in the moment and take away the pain he was clearly feeling.

“I’m happy you enjoy it too. You can come over anytime you need to, the window is always open. I swing in a lot more than using the front door”

He was caught off guard by the hug. But he let a small smile cross his face as he returned it. The kid was sweet for trying to help him out.

"Yeah, I'll stick with the door. This arm," he said, flexing the metal one. "Might be good for stopping falls and slowing me down, but I don't like using it unless I have to."

He smiled as Bucky returned the hug and lent against him enjoying the moment.

“Ignoring all the trauma and stuff from getting it it’s still a really cool arm. The mechanics fascinate me because the movement is so fluid”

Bucky laughed, then sat up and removed said arm, setting it down on the coffee table in front of them. He then gestured to it with the other one. "You can look at it, but if it breaks, I don't think I'll get another one from the Wakandans. So be careful with it."

Like Peter said, despite all the trauma surrounding it, it really was a cool arm. And he was grateful to have been gifted it.

Watching Bucky remove the arm and set it down he looked like a kid on Christmas morning as he slid off the couch to kneel next to the table. He was very gentle as he carefully looked at the interlocking plates and the socket.

“Wow..this tech is so advanced. Even just the plate work is so intricate. It’s incredible”

He was utterly fascinated with the arm and spent a few more minutes looking at it before moving back to sit with Bucky.

“Is the power source kinectic? Or do you charge it up?”

"Well, I know I don't need to charge it, so I'm gonna assume kinetic. Plus I can wash it in the dishwasher, so there's that," he said with a light laugh. "I'm not entirely sure what they did, but the socket it connects to is completely different than my old one from Hydra. That one wasn't able to be removed and it hurt. A lot. This one not so much though."

“That‘s so smart! Saves a lot of worry when you’re travelling and changing plug types”

Looking closely at the socket he sat up with a surprised expression when he mentioned the dish washer. That sounded like a crazy thing to do to top tech.

“Is it water proof..I guess that makes the most sense for of you feel in water. The dish washer though? That’s crazy”

"C'mon. You're telling me you've never taken your arm off and put it in the dishwasher?" His expression was mostly deadpan, but there was a mischievous glint in his eyes. Obviously Peter had never done that, but it was fun to tease the kid. "You really should try it sometime. Saves on shower time."

"In all honesty, I did that on a whim one time, and just kinda kept doing it. Just don't mention it. Ever. I think if Shuri found out, she'd have a heart attack."

Laughing at that he shook his head imagining the weird sight of taking off your limbs to wash them.

“I think you’re really lucky it didn’t short circuit or even kill your dishwasher! I guess if they didn’t tell you any washing instructions and it works you can keep doing it.”

"Probably. But, like i said, it was an on-a-whim decision, and nothing's happened yet. So I'm gonna keep doing it," he said with a shrug.

"So aside from fighting other super heroes and other various villains, tell me more about you maybe?"

“I wouldn’t know where to start. I’ve lost so much and been through so much shit it’s hard to know what’s important and what’s not. I even nearly ripped apart the whole multiverse. Currently I’m working two jobs and patrolling trying to make rent and afford food. It sucks but it’s all I have left after everything”

Then go from there," he told him, picking up his arm from the table, and standing up to reattach it. "Those friends of yours. After talking to Sam and giving him the shield, Steve got up to approach Bucky. He wasn't sure if he would be met with anger or excitement.

It had been so many years since he had seen either of his friends. He truly did miss them while he was away. He had wanted to come back so many times, but there was no way for him to have done so. He waited

Once he was in front of Bucky, he smiled at him.

"It's good to see you again." Steve said simply.

"Yeah, you too," Bucky said, rather absent-mindedly.

For Steve, it had been decades since they'd seen each other. For Bucky, not so much. He was...well he didn't know what he was. He wasn't angry, per say, but he certainly wasn't excited. The way he looked at it, Steve had left him. After all the time he'd spent looking g for him, and defending him, and making sure he was okay, he'd just up and left. Maybe bitter was the right word for how he was feeling.

"Guess I was right about you takin' all the stupid with you," he stated in a half attempt at a joke.

"I had to follow my gut. I had this feeling that I was meant to go back." He responded. "I think it was the right choice."

For years he had gone back and forth in his mind wondering if he truly had made the right choice. He left all that he had built in the modern era behind: his career and his friends. All for a new start and a chance at love.

"I'm still here for you, if you ever need me. That doesn't have to change." Steve continued. "I'm just a bit old looking, but I'm still the same Steve."

Bucky kind of scoffed. "I know, I know. You've always done that, Steve. That's one thing that's never changed about you, and I guess I shouldn't be surprised. I just..." His voice trailed off as he tried to find the words.

He shook his head. "You should have told me," he stated, finally meeting Steve's gaze. He'd been avoiding it this whole time. The look in his eyes was one of hurt, and betrayal. "That's really it, Steve. I just wish you'd have said, 'hey, I'm not coming back.' Because while I don't think you meant it to be personal, it feels personal. Do you know how long I stood there, waiting on you? Everybody else said, 'he's not coming back, Bucky,' and, 'stop waiting around', and you know what I did?" His voice was hoarse, eyes filled with unshed tears. "I stood there. And I waited. And I thought something had happened to you. I wanted to go looking for you. To figure out where you went. And then you show up here, acting like nothing happened. That you just went along and had your happy ending. That--that feels personal. Like I did something to make you not want to come back. Tell me I'm wrong, Stevie. Tell me that's not how you meant it to be...."

Checking the time Peter saw he only had half an hour left of his shift and he’d sent Bucky a message to meet him for their subs. He wasn’t sure yet what Bucky would prefer in his so he made his own and set aside some cookies with it to wait for him to arrive.

Pausing to stroke Murphy a few times he chatted happily with regulars checking the door each time the bell rung to see if it was his friend.

He manages to find the shop with little issue; he's just a little late. He walks through the door about fifteen minutes after Peter had sent his last message. Bucky honestly liked the kid. He wasn't used to having people around that understood him, but Peter seemed to get it. It was nice. Bucky sees him behind the counter and gives a half wave as he walks in.

Seeing Bucky walk in he grinned and waved handing over the coffee to the customer he was serving before walking along the counter to greet him.

“Hey! It’s great to see you. This is Murphy I was telling you about”

Pointing to the fluffy cat lounging on a cushion he gave him a quick pet before washing his hands ready to make up their subs.

He held out a hand to the cat, letting him sniff him. "Seems like a good shop cat," he says, scratching Murphy behind the ear. "What's on the menu then, Chef?" he asks with a lighthearted grin.

“He’s a local legend really” He grinned seeing Murphy loving all the attention and looked down at what ingredients he had.

“Well my favorite is double cheese with triple pickles and toasted but I think you’re more of a chicken guy right? Maybe chicken and honey mustard mayo”

Looking up at Bucky he smiled happy to see him looking okay after he’d mentioned having a hard time.

He contemplates that for a second. "Add double cheese to mine too and I'll give it a try."

As soon as Peter's back is turned, he lets the smile fall from his face. He's gotten really good at faking it until he can't anymore. More of the training I can't get rid of even if I wanted to, he thinks to himself. His brooding is interrupted by Murphy headbutting his hand for more affection.

“A double cheese guy too! Perfect”

Making the sub he wrapped it perfectly in foil and added it to the bag with his own and the cookies from earlier before turning back to see Murphy demanding more attention.

“He approves of you that’s always a honour”

Smiling at the cat he pointed to the sodas in the fridge.

“Do you want soda or coffee? Maybe even both? Coffee now soda later?”

"Yeah, well, I think I've always been fond of cats. Remember feeding the strays outside in the alley when I had a little extra. Wasn't often, but I think they still appreciated it."

He ruffles the fur on Murphy's head, debating on what he wanted. Decision making is hard for him, so it takes him a second to respond. "Probably coffee now, soda later."

Putting some sodas into the bag he made their coffees greeting his co worker who’d come to take over his shift. Chatting to her as he put on the lids he made a fuss over Murphy before getting his jacket and the bag of good joining Bucky on the other side of the counter.

“Want to head to the park to eat? I know a peaceful spot to sit”

"They really are."

He shrugs. "Entirely up to you. I'm just here for the food," he states with a lopsided grin, trying to be obvious about the fact that he's messing with him.

Looking over at Bucky he laughed seeing his grin realising he was joking about that. Leading the way through the side streets to a small park area he sat down on a bench putting the bag beside him to hand out their food.

“You need to get someone who can afford the big time restaurants to pull that off successfully. I’m barely scraping by rent each month”

He followed, trying to ignore the sounds of the city that were inevitable when living in the area. Luckily the side streets were quieter, so he had less of a hard time; Bucky was grateful for that.

He sat down too, and leaned back on the bench with a sigh to stare at the clouds. They were starting to go grey, indicating there was bad weather on the horizon. Hopefully not before they finished their food though.

"Hey trust me, I get that. You know what it's like bein' two pennies short for a loaf of bread and having the shopkeeper just look at you with pity? I hate that feeling..."

Getting comfortable on the bench he handed Bucky his sub and nodded sipping his coffee as he listened to him. He knew the pitying look well and had seen it a lot as a young child.

“You know it’s sad that it’s been a long time and still that’s so true for a lot of people. When I was a kid my aunt used to ask me to put back things in the supermarket and we’d get that look. She always hated it. We had enough we just couldn’t have the luxuries.”

Putting his coffee cup down he unwrapped his sub checking it was cool enough to bite and he wouldn’t burn his lip again like before.

He took the sub with a nod of thanks, setting it in his lap as he sipped his coffee.

"Then you were on the lucky side of things. Barely scraping by in the 30's was....not great, we'll put it that way."

He took another sip of coffee and unwrapped his sub.

Nodding he knew Bucky was right there. He couldn’t imagine the struggles people had back then and with the thread of war hanging over them as well. It was a lot to comprehend.

“I had a good childhood, not the best sure but I was loved and that’s the most important thing really.”

Watching Bucky sip the coffee he smiled softly enjoying his company. It was nice to talk to someone who just understood him without having to explain it all.

“Is it weird to be in a world so different to what you knew?”

"Yeah," he said with a gentle nod. "Yeah I'd agree with that. Always easier knowing you can come home to those who love you..." He trailed off, eyes becoming unfocused as the countless friends and family that he'd loved and lost flashed across his mind.

Bucky shook his head, trying to clear the thoughts, and took a bite of his sub. He looked at Peter with a surprised grin. "Well damn, these have gotten better. And yeah, sometimes it is weird. I mean, I was frozen for a good portion of technological advancements, so I get confused by some of them. Like microwaves? Wild stuff," he laughed, taking yet another long sip of his coffee.

Seeing Bucky enjoying the sub he smiled proudly. He’d played around with the flavours since starting at Delmars and was proud of the positive comments he got over them.

“It’s good because I made it. The honey mustard really goes well with chicken. I want to find a better cheese for it next.”

Eating his own he lent back on the bench happily. He loved seeing someone enjoy something he’d made. He felt the same over his products he’d patented with a few of the tech companies.

"It really does. I'm not usually a big honey mustard guy, but it's not bad on this."

He glanced over at Peter, grinning in response when he saw how proud his comment had made the kid. "So. Tell me what it's been like growin' up in the 'age of technology', will ya? Old man is curious about what you kids have done in this day and age."

“It’s been a lot! Phones have become really advanced. I love having a camera in my pocket all the time. I like taking photos of the views from the bridges. Um…I don’t really like social media I think that was a bad change. Scientific advancements really excite me. I’m always looking to see what changes are coming with that too. It’s my passion”

Pausing his ate is sub thinking of what else he’d seen that Bucky might not have during his moments of being asleep.

“Space was wild! I didn’t think I’d ever end up in space”

"Yeah no kidding. Pocket cameras with access to the internet. A sentence I never would have thought I'd say," he said, shaking his head with a laugh. "Got anything recommendations on stuff i should look into? I get kinda bored, so science is definitely somethin' I'd like to read up on."

Humming softly he thought about what would interest Bucky most. There had been a lot of advancements but some of it could be boring to look into deeply.

“String theory might interest you. That’s a way of understanding the multiverse theory and something we’ve had experience of too so it’s relatable. You could always watch the classic sci-fi films too. Alien is great and ET, it’s old but I loved that as a kid”

"Seen ET, thought it was good. Not something I'd watch on a regular basis, but it was good. I've heard of Alien, but it hasn't made its way onto the list yet."

He finished his food, and his drink, crumpled up the wrapper and stuffed it into the cup; quick and easy trash disposal.

"I dunno if I want to understand the science behind what happened," he said after a moment of silence. "But it's not a bad idea. Maybe I will look into it at some point."

“We could have a weekly movie night and I’ll introduce you to the classics. Jaws is my favorite because it’s crazy and dumb but a great watch. They even made a mechanical shark to film it which is crazy”

Watching Bucky he smiled and finished his coffee holding out the bag of cookies for him.

“Do you have to eat a lot of calories with the serum? I do and it’s a pain in my ass and wallet. Back when I had a good lab I was working on enhanced protein pills to try and make it easier”

Bucky shrugged slightly, mulling over the idea. "I could be persuaded. Does it involve snacks and popcorn?"

He eyed the cookies, then stuck his hand in the bag and grabbed one.

"I probably should eat more, but Hydra kinda starved me for the most part, so I don't really eat much. Guess I never really got over that..."

“Yeah! You can’t have a movie night without snacks. We can get nachos and popcorn. They’re great snacks. I know how you feel. Mr Stark worked out I needed 5000 calories a day with my crazy metabolism but it’s so hard to eat all that or even afford it. He helped me work on the supplements idea but then space happened and things got wild. I need to get back to it soon. I think they’d help you too”

"Yeah...the whole space thing was...something..." His voice trailed off again, clearly wanting to avoid the topic. There were things that happened that he still wasn't ready to face.

"Depending on the movie you pick, I could try and do weekly movie nights. But if you pick somethin' awful and make me watch it anyways, I might not come back."

Noticing the change in Bucky’s heart rate and his hesitation he glanced over at him realising space might not be a good choice. He laughed at the thought of Bucky walking out on a bad movie.

“If you don’t like a choice we can always pick something else. There’s so many on streaming now you don’t have to suffer through something you don’t like”

It was a shame, really. Because before the war, space was so cool and fascinating to Bucky. He used to love the idea of maybe going up there one day. Now, it just left a dull ache in his chest.

"There's too many choices on streaming. It gets confusing and it's hard to navigate. Which is why I'm leaving that part up to you."

Laughing softly he took a cookie out of the bag and sat back watching Bucky as he ate it. It was amusing how Bucky could get almost grumpy over modern tech. Peter understood how confusing it could all be though. He couldn’t imagine waking up fifty years in the future and coping any better.

“Hey! Want to come over tonight? We could watch a couple of tv shows if there’s not time for a full movie?”

Bucky thought about it for a second while he munched on his cookie. Then he shrugged nonchalantly and replied, "Sure, why not. I dont have anything going on tonight."

He smiled happily as Bucky accepted the invite and shared out the last of the cookies between them putting the empty bag on the bench beside him.

“Great! I’m off tomorrow too so we can watch a lot of episodes of we find a good show. Hey! Have you seen the lord of the rings films? They’re a great watch”

"I haven't seen it, but I've read it," he stated, munching on the last bit of the cookies. "I've heard they're pretty long too. We'd probably have to set aside an entire day for that." He paused, glancing over at the kid. "You sound like you've got a show you're thinkin' of. What is it?"

“You’ve read it! That’s so cool I can’t really imagine you settled down reading a book but that’s cool. I read a lot as a child and I take a book on stake outs to have something to do. There’s a few shows I think you’d like but I don’t want to pick one you won’t enjoy”

Bucky deadpanned at him. "Peter, you do realize I was around when The Hobbit first came out, right? I was around in 1937. Of course I've read Lord of the Rings. Reading is one of the only things that distracts me enough to relax."

He laughed softly, and for once it was genuine. "Gimme some titles and I'll tell ya what sounds interesting. "

Laughing at Bucky’s expression he looked over at him realising that he really had lived through a lot of good things as well as bad.

“Oh yeah! I can’t imagine people being around for those books actually coming out as new. I was born 2001 so I didn’t even see the last millennium and you’d had like loads of cool decades and things. I haven’t read the Hobbit i could do that one next”

"Its a long read, but its good. Should definitely put it on your list." Bucky paused for a second, realizing just how young Peter was. Like, he knew the kid was young but not quite that young. "Pretty sure I was still in cryo for that year. I think before that, the last time I'd been awake was '91. That makes you how old now?"

“You missed all the 90s? That sucks I read they were really cool years to live through. All the classic movies are from the 90s too. I got blipped so I’m 19 with the missing five years I was dust for. That’s still weird to think about. It was minutes for me but five years passed, crazy!”

"Yeah, well, '91 wasn't exactly a good year for me, so I'm okay with having missed the rest of it."

Holy shit, the kid wasn't even twenty yet? And he'd already been through that much? A part of Bucky's soul ached for Peter; he remembered being that young and going through as much as he did. It was upsetting to him, to say the least.

"Got blipped too. I think that puts me around 101 without that time. Not sure, but I think that's right. I just know I'm too old for this stuff now."

“101! Wow if you’ve have been around for all those years you’d be super old and have a big celebration. I think you can just count the awake years though so you get to shave a few off that, unless you feel 101 then I’d say embrace it! You look handsome for 101”

"If we did that, I'd be closer to being in my mid-thirties. Which, honestly, I don't know how old I feel. Some days I definitely feel the full 101. That bootleg serum I got doesn't do anything for the constant pain my body is in." He smirked a little at the comment of him being handsome for being over 100 years old. "Thanks, kid. I appreciate that."

He could feel the rain starting to move in; he didn't feel like getting drenched in a possible downpour. He got up, took his trash to the nearest receptacle, then came back. "Not sure what you've got planned for the rest of the day, but I think it might be better to move indoors either way. Being cold and wet isn't how I plan on spending the rest of mine."

“You’re in pain! You should give me a blood sample. I can see if my medication I’m working on would be compliant with the serum you have. If you’re enhanced similar to how I am it should work. I just need to rule out some side effects”

Looking up at the clouds he hummed softly seeing how gray they were getting. Bucky was right it looked like they risked getting wet staying there.”

“Yeah let’s go to my place. We can watch a show and write up a watch list”

Hopping up off the bench he put their wrappers in the bin and made sure he had his wallet and backpack.

Bucky scoffed lightly. "While I appreciate the offer, I think I've had enough of my blood stolen over the years. I'll keep it to myself for now." He wasn't too worried about the pain, at least not today. It was something he'd learned to deal with over the years.

"Sure. Works for me." He stuffed his hands in his pockets and waited on Peter to lead the way.

Getting up off the bench he smiled and put his hands in his pockets to keep them still and waited for Bucky to be ready.

“It’s not stealing if you donate it but I won’t force you. Im lucky I can experiment on myself but I wouldn’t like someone else fussing with me”

Once Bucky was ready he took him back to his apartment. It was a basic apartment but he’d made it feel cosy with blankets and cushions. Dropping his bag by the door he sat down on the couch. A half repaired suit was laying over the table with a sewing machine beside it.

“Let me know if you want a coffee”

"Yeah, no thanks. If that changes, you'll be the first to know," he stated with a smirk. "Well, technically the second. I'll be the first to know."

He followed Peter to his apartment, and was courteous enough to remove his shoes before stepping further inside. He glanced around the small apartment; it wasn't much bigger than his own, if at all bigger. Peter seemed to be doing okay for himself, and for that, Bucky was glad.

He looked over at the kid and just said, "I've never turned down free coffee in my life, and I don't plan to start now. But you don't have to get it right this second. Relax for a minute. I can wait."

Nodding softly he sat back relaxing as Bucky said he should. It had been a long time since he’d had company in his tiny apartment and he was excited and nervous in equal measure.

“Sorry, my aunt used to say about being a good host and making people feel welcome. It’s been a long time since I had someone come over.”

"My ma used to say the same thing, but we didn't usually have anyone over that wasn't family, and they were all used to our antics," he said with a soft laugh.

He wandered over to a bookcase that had a bunch of knick knacks and photos on it. He picked up a photo frame that was of Peter and, he assumed, his aunt. Judging from the photo, she seemed to have loved Peter a lot. Bucky set the photo back down and glanced over at Peter. "Can I ask what happened? You make it sound like she's not around anymore. You have a falling out or...?" He didn't finish his sentence. He had a feeling the kid knew what he meant.

He laughed softly at the thought of a family so fun it had antics that were well known about. He’d always had such a small family and it just got smaller and smaller over the years. Taking a deep breath he watched Bucky with the photo.

“She um..she died. I had a run in with a villain, guy who called himself the goblin and he attacked my friends apartment block where we were staying to be safe. She died in the attack. I miss her a lot. After my parents and uncle died she was all I had and now it’s just me”

Leaning back into the couch he curled up into himself looking his age when he was so small.

Bucky nodded solemnly; he knew what that was like. His own family had all passed on thinking he'd died in the war. One part of him was glad that they never found out what he'd become. The other part of him missed them all dearly. He knew he had family still around, but they didn't know him aside from what they'd heard on the news or read in a museum. Which, for the record, wasn't great. He'd never reached out to them because of it.

He came over and sat down next to Peter with a sigh. "Yeah, but you've still got your friends, right?" Damn, the kid looked so tiny. Reminded him of someone else he used to know. He banished the thought almost instantly. No reason continuing to be sad about someone who didn't want him around anymore. "That at least helps, don't it?"

“Ah they’re away in Boston at MIT so I don’t get to see them much. I have my work though and Delmar looks out for me. When I’m out in the suit I get a lot of attention too so there’s that but it has been lonely”

Looking up as Bucky sat down he could tell he understood him from the expression on his face. It was a comfort to know someone else could relate to him even in the saddest of situations.

"Mmm, okay I getchya. Well," he paused for a moment. "I guess you're not the only one that's on the lonely side of things..."

Bucky sighed, glancing over at Peter. "When Steve left," he confessed. "I wasn't sure where to go from there. We'd spent so long fighting to get back to each other throughout the decades that...that him leaving was like a piece of my soul broke. And I haven't figured out how to fix that yet. I mean, sure, Sam is around, but we aren't...really on speaking terms right now. And everyone else I knew is dead, so..." Bucky's voice trailed off, leaving nothing but silence between them for a minute or two. "I guess we can be a couple of lonely guys together, huh?" He said with a light nudge against Peter's shoulder.

Nodding as Bucky understood him he listened to him with a soft smile as he explained. He’d heard a lot of Bucky’s and Steve’s story in the history books and at school but he knew they wouldn’t have been able to touch on the personal moments and the true heart of what they’d had.

“I don’t know everything you went through but I knew how close you were and it was a really weird choice to just ..leave like that.”

Laughing at the nudge he grinned and nodded.

“We can, I really enjoy spending time with you and you understand me almost without words. That means a lot”

"Yeah....weird is definitely the right word for it." Bucky's tone was bitter. He still was hurt by that choice, even though he was doing his best not to show it. All those years, for a girl his best friend hardly knew. Bucky shook his head to clear it. No point in dwelling on it. What was done was done, and he couldn't change that. Steve was gone, and Bucky had to learn to live without him.

"Don't mind spendin' time with you either. You're easy to get along with. And words aren't always needed to communicate."

Hearing the pain in Bucky’s voice he lent over and hugged him. He didn’t say anything just tried to comfort him in the moment and take away the pain he was clearly feeling.

“I’m happy you enjoy it too. You can come over anytime you need to, the window is always open. I swing in a lot more than using the front door”

He was caught off guard by the hug. But he let a small smile cross his face as he returned it. The kid was sweet for trying to help him out.

"Yeah, I'll stick with the door. This arm," he said, flexing the metal one. "Might be good for stopping falls and slowing me down, but I don't like using it unless I have to."

He smiled as Bucky returned the hug and lent against him enjoying the moment.

“Ignoring all the trauma and stuff from getting it it’s still a really cool arm. The mechanics fascinate me because the movement is so fluid”

Bucky laughed, then sat up and removed said arm, setting it down on the coffee table in front of them. He then gestured to it with the other one. "You can look at it, but if it breaks, I don't think I'll get another one from the Wakandans. So be careful with it."

Like Peter said, despite all the trauma surrounding it, it really was a cool arm. And he was grateful to have been gifted it.

Watching Bucky remove the arm and set it down he looked like a kid on Christmas morning as he slid off the couch to kneel next to the table. He was very gentle as he carefully looked at the interlocking plates and the socket.

“Wow..this tech is so advanced. Even just the plate work is so intricate. It’s incredible”

He was utterly fascinated with the arm and spent a few more minutes looking at it before moving back to sit with Bucky.

“Is the power source kinectic? Or do you charge it up?”

"Well, I know I don't need to charge it, so I'm gonna assume kinetic. Plus I can wash it in the dishwasher, so there's that," he said with a light laugh. "I'm not entirely sure what they did, but the socket it connects to is completely different than my old one from Hydra. That one wasn't able to be removed and it hurt. A lot. This one not so much though."

“That‘s so smart! Saves a lot of worry when you’re travelling and changing plug types”

Looking closely at the socket he sat up with a surprised expression when he mentioned the dish washer. That sounded like a crazy thing to do to top tech.

“Is it water proof..I guess that makes the most sense for of you feel in water. The dish washer though? That’s crazy”

"C'mon. You're telling me you've never taken your arm off and put it in the dishwasher?" His expression was mostly deadpan, but there was a mischievous glint in his eyes. Obviously Peter had never done that, but it was fun to tease the kid. "You really should try it sometime. Saves on shower time."

"In all honesty, I did that on a whim one time, and just kinda kept doing it. Just don't mention it. Ever. I think if Shuri found out, she'd have a heart attack."

Laughing at that he shook his head imagining the weird sight of taking off your limbs to wash them.

“I think you’re really lucky it didn’t short circuit or even kill your dishwasher! I guess if they didn’t tell you any washing instructions and it works you can keep doing it.”

"Probably. But, like i said, it was an on-a-whim decision, and nothing's happened yet. So I'm gonna keep doing it," he said with a shrug.

"So aside from fighting other super heroes and other various villains, tell me more about you maybe?"

After talking to Sam and giving him the shield, Steve got up to approach Bucky. He wasn't sure if he would be met with anger or excitement.

It had been so many years since he had seen either of his friends. He truly did miss them while he was away. He had wanted to come back so many times, but there was no way for him to have done so. He waited

Once he was in front of Bucky, he smiled at him.

"It's good to see you again." Steve said simply.

"Yeah, you too," Bucky said, rather absent-mindedly.

For Steve, it had been decades since they'd seen each other. For Bucky, not so much. He was...well he didn't know what he was. He wasn't angry, per say, but he certainly wasn't excited. The way he looked at it, Steve had left him. After all the time he'd spent looking g for him, and defending him, and making sure he was okay, he'd just up and left. Maybe bitter was the right word for how he was feeling.

"Guess I was right about you takin' all the stupid with you," he stated in a half attempt at a joke.
