Here are Arbeary and Nemursus! These two rare Pokémon can only be found by Lake Luna in the Vecchia Region.
These two are based on the Apennine or Marcian Brown Bear, strawberries and arbutus berries, as well as the goddess Diana who had an important cult center at lake Nemi, just south of Rome. I like the Ursaring and Bewear lines (except for Ursaluna that guy is cool as hell) but they were never really all that cool or cute to me. I wanted a bear pokémon that captures the general cuteness as well as the ferocity of the bear,
I am returned!! And I would like Game Freak to bring back fossil Pokémon
These lines are inspired by written history vs archaeology, as well as the Late Bronze Age collapse (especially Sheraxe, Sea Peoples anyone?)
(Sorry for the lack of uploads, I was on a 10 week scholarship in Rome baby! I hope to upload more frequently now, and try to actually finish this project)

Since you all liked them so much, here is more Bandicat!
Here is Nambipambi! A form changing design á la Wishiwashi, inspired by confetti, an Italian invention!
This design came to me so quickly I literally had to stop what I was doing to draw it. They can also come in a variety of colours, with the gold being the shiny variant
Here is the first split evolution of the Vecchia Region: Dhoully, Poppaunt, and the two evolutions Streghum and Fenedanti! Based on witches/strega, and the Benandanti
This line has some both very obvious witches and witchcraft inspiration as well as less obvious inspirations from the Benandanti. Witches have a long history in Italy, especially in relation to the malocchio, or evil eye. The two split evolutions are based on the Benandanti myth, which is a fascinating concept. Good witches/werewolves fighting witches by astral projecting? I am surprised that there isn’t a young-adult fantasy novel a lá Percy Jackson about them…
The single stage Spidance! Based on the Tarantella (a traditional Italian dance), tambourines, tarantulas, and the European Black Widow
The tarantella is such an iconic part of Italian culture I felt like I had to base at least one design off of it.
Here is the grass type starter line in the Vecchia Region! Sproutrunk, Pachystomp, and Petrodon
They are inspired by the Apennine mountains, agriculture, and Hannibal crossing the Alps with his elephants!
The design process for this line was quite difficult because I struggled to create a good shape language for them. I wanted to avoid that they became big, shapeless blobs in their silhouette. I think I did a decent job! And yes, I made the grass starter bipedal, but the character I wanted to present did not really work when Petrodon was on all fours.
Introducing the fire type starter line for the Vecchia Regio; Tadcoal, Buforole, and Caldeforge!
This line was inspired by the volcanoes and volcanic activity of Italy, blacksmithing, and the fire salamander. Tadcoal was arguably the hardest starter to design, because I wanted him to look distinct but still noticeably squishy.
Here is the water type starter line for the Vecchia Region! Crabub, Shyrimp, and Gambastrut
This line arguably went through the most changes. It was an octopus, then a seahorse, but eventually I settled on Crab. This line I think has the strongest characterisation of the three starters, and definitely has a distinct silhouette. The final stage ended up bipedal, but early designs I did of it with a real shrimp tail just didn’t work well.
The regional fish line, Saillin, Spadreme, and Requiwreck! Based on sharks and swordfish, Roman triremes, and ancient shipwrecks.
I have never been a big fan of the regional fish lines, so I wanted to put my own spin on it. Mainly by making it a 3 stage line, and giving the first evolution more personality than just “fish”. I am especially a fan of the lighting on Requiwreck. I also wanted to design a shark Pokémon as the two that we have, Sharpedo and Garchomp, are both very angry and threatening. This line focusses more on the speed and agility of sharks, but does lean into some tropes, specifically the sharks and shipwrecks trope.
I am pleased to present my first commission, for @kiwymelody!
This is Pebbishi and Niohishi! Their names are portmanteaus of Pebble & Ishi, and Nio, Menhir, & Ishi.
I have to admit, I had not heard of a pet rock until this project, but the idea is very cute. Kiwy's reference pages took inspiration from Pokémon lines like Magikarp and Abra, where a reasonably weak Pokémon evolves into a giant, powerful companion. I suggested the visual inspiration of zen stones, and the shape came together quite naturally. I tried to make the design of Niohishi a little asymmetrical to add visual interest, and used a light green to distinguish it from other similar ghost types like Cursola and Runerigus. I personally really love Kiwy's idea of making the body of Pebbishi the center of Niohishi's body, as well as the sessho-seki influences for the paper nest.
This was a lot of fun to work on, and a fun design challenge!
Introducing your rivals!
Viola is a young woman from the Unova region, who is participating in Prof. Ventura’s internship programme. She has boundless energy and enthusiasm for battle, and is aiming to conquer the Elite 4.
Fabio is Prof. Ventura’s nephew, and something of a book worm, preferring to stay inside and study. He was convinced to participate in the internship programme. He is hoping to find the truth behind a mysterious phenomenon of Archaic Pokémon, and the mysterious Ambrosia Berries.
Caio is a mysterious character. He has a bad attitude that makes him come across somewhat bratty. But he approaches you to help with taking down the Four Bosses of Team Forza, with whom he seems to share some kind of relationship…
Design notes! I based these three on the rivals from Gen 5, 6, and 9. Viola is related to Lenora, the second gym leader in Black and White. Fabio’s ace is Hoothoot so I gave him glasses shaped like it! Caio is based on a famous Roman Emperor (if you can guess who, I will reveal Team Forza’s design and story)
The regional rock line, its Plinti, Columnella, and Tempellum! They are based on marble and Roman temples.
I have never been a fan of regional rock lines, but the Garganacl line has really become a favourite since Scarlet and Violet came out. I designed this line with the concept of manmade structures in mind, which is something we haven’t really seen in Pokemon yet. I imagine that this line can also learn a bunch of fairy and grass type moves.
After some serious design reworks, I can finally introduce Denkinumi, the (first) regional Pika-clone! Denkimuni is based on the Etruscan Vole and integrated technology like microchips and RFID. I wanted to incorporate the vole into at least one design since it is endemic to the Italian peninsula.
The first regional variant of Vecchia, Spritzee, Aromatisse, and a special regional evolution, Miasmorata! This design focusses more on the lines plague doctor inspiration, taking from the classic look and vibes of the plague doctors in Italy.
Lots of Pokémon fans kind of dislike this line, which I find strange since I think they’re actually quite cute! But I wanted to give Aromatisse the evolution it always deserved and an ability to match. For Miasmorata’s design, I actually took some inspiration from vultures, especially the Lammergeier, which can be found in the Italian Alps. The long neck gives her a unique silhouette I think.
