Now You're Here (a Gavin Rossdale Fan Fiction) (on Wattpad) http://my.w.tt/UiNb/sCwdhdKmYs When she falls asleep on her 30th birthday, Corrine Thomas is anything but happy. Single, laid off, and, thanks to her best friend Lina, sufficiently drunk, she drifts off wishing to be anywhere but where she is. She doesn't expect her wish to come true, and she certainly doesn't expect to wake up in 1995, or on the tour bus of one of her favourite bands, but after tumbling from an unfamiliar bunk, that's just where she finds herself. She doesn't know how she got here, why a young and gorgeous Gavin Rossdale is calling her babe, why they are fighting, or how to exist in a world without cell phones. Can she slip into the life this alternate Corrine has made for herself without being found out? Will she ever get back to 2016? Does she even want to? (Co-written by ElizabethWarner and FooFan606)
I actually don't even know if I have words to describe how deeply I have fallen in love with your fic. I am nearing chapter 30 and have basically given up on the real world and decided I only want to live within the one you've created. So GD relatable. I feel like so many of PJ's quirks and insecurities are mine. Thank you for writing this. Please never stop. x
Hi anon! What a sweet and beautiful message! Thank you! That just made my day. 💞 there will be more… xoxo
I am sorry for the long wait. I had this inside for a long time and wasn’t sure if it was the right ending. I pretty sure that it is. I hope you enjoy. Please be sure to listen to I Am A River off of Sonic Highways while reading this. Thanks again.
I looked through the viewfinder of my camera at the handsome groom. I reached up and adjusted the focus and smiled as I clicked the shutter.
“Stella! What are you doing?” Missy demanded from behind me. “It’s bad luck for you to see the groom before the wedding.” I set my camera down and Missy came up beside me and we both gazed out the window of the English Manor we had rented for the day down at James and the groomsmen gathering in the garden below.
“It’s only bad luck if we see each other,” I said, turning towards her. She smiled and shook her head, her hand absentmindedly caressing her pregnant belly, which was just ever so slightly beginning to show. I handed her my camera. “Fine, you snap some.” I drifted away from the window and over to my dress draped on the bed. “I cannot believe this weather.”
“Not even the English countryside would dare to be rainy on this day,” Missy giggled. “Come on, let’s get your dress on.” She set down my camera and came over and helped me into my dress. It was a simple lace dress, perfect for a garden wedding. I gazed at myself in the mirror as Missy did up the buttons and I felt my mind drift back over the past two years, marveling at all that had happened since James had proposed.
Stella...December 2014… New York City
I had moved out of Virginia, to New York with James. We were hardly there, though. Between traveling for photoshoots and James working on several different projects, we spent the next year moving at a frantic pace. Dave and I didn’t speak for months and when we did, it was strained and awkward. By October, the band had started recording their next album. It was a big project and both James and I were surprised when Dave flew into New York to ask us to both be a part of it.
It was the Sonic Highways trips that managed to save my friendship with Dave. We redefined our relationship a little more in each city. Late night pool and drinks after the gig at Cubby Bear, where James tried to teach Chri and Butch “snooker” and Dave and I shared a drink and watched on in a comfortable silence. Back home in Virginia, where Dave and I took everyone around to show them the sights and where Skeeter Thompson tried very hard to get me to leave James for him. Out sick in Nashville where Dave would sneak away from recording to bring me food in my hotel room and play snippets of “Congregation” that he’d recorded on his phone for me. Getting high with Willie Nelson in Austin, Texas and having the entire band and crew laugh at how paranoid I got. Watching the sunrise with Josh and Dave at the Rancho. Getting lost with Dave in the French Quarter of New Orleans only to return to find that James had been doing is best not to get frantic that I’d disappeared with my former love. One gentle kiss on James’ lips was all it took to remind him that I was going to be his forever.
By the time we reached Seattle, Dave was comfortable enough to ask James if he would mind loaning me out for the afternoon. We took off in the rental car, Dave giving me a private tour of this city that was once his home and of his life back them. I knew most of the stories by heart; I knew everything about Dave by heart, but it felt like I was hearing them for the first time, seeing the memories behind his eyes, feeling closer to him in that rental car than I think I had the entire time I’d known him.
“There’s no grave site for us to visit,” Dave said as he pulled into a park spot in front of Pike Place Market. I knew he was talking about Kurt. “So when I am here, I like to grab a cup of coffee and head out on the pier. I try to reflect on all the good things that happened to us here.”
“Do you want to do that?” I asked quietly. He looked at me and nodded. “Can I join you?”
“I was hoping you would,” he said. I smiled and pushed open the car door.
The market was crazy, a mess of fans wanting pictures and autographs. I snuck away to grab our coffees while Dave graciously posed with his fans. I waited for a while until I could catch his eye. He bid farewell to the group that had gathered around him and he followed me outside. We quietly walked down to the pier and leaned against the railing. I was silent as we sipped our coffees, leaving Dave to reflect and remember.
“He would have loved you,” he said after a long while. “And he would have told me to pull my head out of my ass and snatch you up years ago.” I chuckled.
“I wish I could have known him,” I said.
“I’m happy for you,” he said, out of nowhere. “For you and James. And I am happy for us. I feel like we are building something good here.”
“Me, too,” I said. “I like being friends with you.” We stood in silence for a long while until Dave drained the last drops of coffee from his cup. Without a word, he reached for my hand, which I happily gave and we walked back to the car.
By the time we rolled into New York, Dave, James and I found ourselves in a comfortable relationship. James was no longer panicked at the thought of Dave and I alone together. Dave no longer had pain behind his eyes when he glanced our way and as for me, I had let go of the ghost of Dave and me.
We had just wrapped our final interview for day and we were packing up. Tomorrow we would all head into The MagicShop to start recording this city’s song. I was cleaning my various lenses and packing them away when I felt James slide up behind me.
“Did you get a chance to talk to Dave yet?” he asked. I shook my head.
“I am going to try to grab him tonight. I will see you back at the loft tonight?” James smiled and nodded. I stood and slung my bag over my shoulder and planted a kiss on his lips.
“See you at home,” he said with a smile. Home. My heart fluttered. It was so nice to be able to head home after this.
Dave watched James leave and eyed me suspiciously.
“You hanging out?” he asked, surprised.
“I am,” I said with a smile.
“Let’s do this,” he said, beaming at me. We all headed out on the town and for the first time in months, it felt like old times. I kept my eye on Dave, knowing that I needed to talk to him before he got too drunk.
“What’s up?” he asked me at one point. “You look like you have something on your mind?”
“Yeah, I wanted to talk to you about something,” I said. “Is there somewhere we can be alone?”
We ended up out back on the patio alone, bundled in our winter coats, sitting on cold plastic patio chairs. I took a deep breath.
“A year and a half ago, I thought we would never recover from all the hurt we’d caused each other,” I started. Dave nodded. “These past few months have shown me that we can still love each other and be friends. I think we will recover.”
“I think so, too,” he said. “I kept asking myself one question, over and over, during the months we we weren’t speaking.”
“What was that?” I asked.
“Is this what you want?” he said. “I would ask myself over and over, ‘Is this what you really want? To be estranged from your friend, to not have her in your life at all?’ And clearly, the answers is no. THIS,” he said, gesturing between himself and me, “is what I really want. You, Stella, are the measure of my life. If I have a good day, I want to share it with you. If I have a bad day, I want to tell you about it.” I felt tears creep into my eyes
“I’ve always felt like that,” I sniffed. Dave smiled.
“Is this what you want?” he asked me. “Is this what you really want?” I nodded and he reached out and hugged me.
“You’re my best friend, Dave,” I said, for both the millionth time and the first time.
“You’re mine,” he said into my hair. We let go and straightened up. I sniffed again and laughed.
“Sorry,” I said, brushing a tear away. “So all that being said, I have a big favor to ask you. You don’t have to answer me tonight, I want you to think about it. And feel free to say ‘no’,” I prefaced. Dave raised an eyebrow at me.
“I don’t have my father here, to give me away,” I started, feeling a painful lump rising up in my throat. Dave reached for my hand and gave me a squeeze. “I’ve talked to James about different options and,” I stopped and took another deep breath. “I would love it if you gave me away at my wedding in May.” Dave’s eyebrows shot up and he gaped at me surprised.
“You are the measure of my life,” I whispered, my voice hoarse with emotion. “You have been for over a decade. It would mean a lot to me. It would symbolize a lot for us, too. A new beginning. A new relationship. A new role for you in my life.”
“Let me think about it,” he whispered. I nodded and stood, wiping my eyes again and reached down to pull him up to. “Give me a minute,” he said. “I will in in a second.” I squinted at him for a second and turned to leave. “Sassy?” he called after me, using my nickname for the first time in a year and a half. I turned back. “Do you have a pen and paper?” I dug around in my purse and handed him both before turning to head back inside.
The next day, as I watched Dave leaning into the microphone, I was unable to belieive what I was hearing.
There is a secret, I found a secret, Behind a Soho door. There is a reason, I found a reason, beneath the subway floor. I found the water, The devil’s water and walked along its shore
Is that what you want? The channel’s changing The heart is racing from voices on a wire The soul is yearning the cold is burning the ember starts a fire
Can we recover love for each other, the measure of your life
Is that what you want? Is that what you really want
A river, A river, a river running underground
A river, A river, Is that what you want? Is that what you really want?
I…I… I am a river.
Afterwards, Dave came over and whispered in my ear.
“I owed you a song,” he said, quietly. “And I would be honored to give you away.” He kissed my cheek gently before he disappeared into the control booth.
Stella...May 2015...England
“There,” Missy said, tucking the veil into my simple updo. “Perfect.” I gazed at myself in the mirror and smiled. I soft tapping at the door made us both spin around.
There stood Dave, looking dapper in his tuxedo. He smiled at me, taking me in and shaking his head.
“You are a beautiful bride,” he said.
“Is it time?” Missy asked. Dave nodded.
“I will give you two a minute,” she said, gathering up her clutch and my camera and ducking out the door.
“Are you sure you want to do this?” I asked Dave as he crossed the room to me.
“You mean walk my best friend down the aisle and hand her over to the man she loves?” he said, smiling. “Absolutely.” I giggled.
“Thanks, Dave,” I said, meaning it with my whole heart.
“Stella, I know it should be your father here, giving you away and I am so sorry that he’s not. But if he was, I know he would tell you that he’s proud of you, like I am proud of you and that you have never, ever looked more beautiful than you do right now.” I felt the tears welling up and nodded my thank-you, not trusting my voice to speak. He extended his elbow and I clutched on to it.
We descended the staircase where Missy was waiting for us. James and I had kept the bridal party and the wedding small. James’ brother was his best man. Missy was my Maid of Honor. The band and their wives were all in attendance, as well as James’ parents, my mother, some of James’ co-workers and a few members from our families scattered in. Dave and Missy led me to the back of the manor and out towards the garden. Missy turned and smiled at me, kissing my cheek before turning and walking down the aisle, clutching her bouquet of wildflowers. I gripped Dave’s arm tightly. He bent and kissed my cheek.
“It’s our turn, Sassy,” Dave said, and I allowed him to lead me toward the groom, the rest of the wedding party and the rest of my life.
i'm really loving this story! it's sooo good! are you gonna update soon?? can't wait to see how it ends. xxx ps. are you writing a new fic after this?
Sorry for taking so long. I have bad writers block so I have been the reading A LOT trying to get inspired. After this I am going to try to tackle a non-fan-fiction story. Wish me luck!
It still amazes me that I get new followers. I got two new ones this week. Hi, there. Anyway- nowaybackfic and I just finished reading Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell. You ALL should read it. It’s us, guys, and it’s awesome. It made me miss writing fic and miss updating but most of all, it made me miss falling in love with my characters and the world I created around them. STHHIK was such an amazing experience, I want to live that again but I just don’t have any stories or characters I am passionate about right now (perhaps having a high stress upper level management job with frequent travel and a two year old might have something to do with that…)
Anyway- I miss you guys, I miss Dave, I miss writing. That’s pretty much it.
Oh yeah- go to Amazon, search Fangirl, download it to your kindle app and thank me later.
Xoxoxo- Sarah
