One of Us is the Killer review. By me. Check it out.
TEXT VERSION:
MEET THE SOUNDTRACK TO YOUR NEW NIGHTMARES.
I have to stress immediately that I mean that in the best possible way that I can. It’s just that there’s simply no better word to describe The Dillinger Escape Plan’s latest than “frightening.” And I’m not even referring to the incredibly hectic nature of the music. One of Us is the Killer just has a genuinely sinister feeling surrounding the entire record. It’s borderline violent - it also might be Dillinger’s most accomplished, balanced and musically impressive album to date.
The weak-of-heart may want to start out at a low volume as One of Us immediately kicks your teeth down your throat with “Prancer,” the first track released off of the album. For purists, tracks like “Prancer“ and “Hero of the Soviet Union may feel like a welcome return to form for the group, featuring the insanity and disarray we all came to know and love with albums Calculating Infinity and Under the Running Boards. It’s all done with a sense of elegance that newcomers may be hesitant to appreciate, but fans will take hold instantly. If you’re expecting “more of the same,” however, you’re in for a let-down. You’re also listening to the wrong band. The Dillinger Escape Plan has consistently shown their ability to adapt and grow as musicians, and that shines through this entire album.
The incredibly catchy title track, “One of Us is the Killer,” demonstrates this to perhaps the greatest extent. This is a song that I found myself singing along to on the first listen, and immediately played back. The group manages to once again pull off a sound that will appeal to a broader audience while still holding onto the integrity and unique sound that makes Dillinger so special in the heart and minds of so many. I can’t help but give credit to any musician or group of musicians who isn’t afraid to flex this muscle every once in a while, and remind fans and outsiders alike that they’re not a one-trick-pony. It’s constantly refreshing and it keeps the album from getting stale on multiple listens.
One of Us is the Killer is very possibly my favorite album so far this year so far, and one that I can’t recommend fast enough to anyone with an appreciation for wonderful musical feats. The Dillinger Escape Plan is one of those constant forces that just refuses to stop improving, and that’s very good news for listeners.
