RACISM IS MY ART II I started exploring the topic of Racism -motivated by personal frustrations- for one my courses to create an artwork out of it. For my second approach, I explored and read different news pieces and blog posts and I settled on a question that I found on Reddit along with a frustrating sentence from one of the answers. As for the audio, the definition of Racism -based on Wikipedia- is delivered using the “Bad News” option.
RACISM IS MY ART I I started exploring the topic of Racism -motivated by personal frustrations- for one my courses to create an artwork out of it. This one is based on an incident that one of my middle eastern friends has been through while working at a cafe here, in Germany. An old lady who was there at the cafe kept staring and giving him certain looks while he was coming and going, so he eventually went and asked her she’d like to order something else. Her reply, “From you?! I won’t be needing anything” Then she goes and asks another german waitress to get her something. For this one, I was intrigued by the phrase “What’s on your mind?” before posting a status on Facebook, which for me is the case for such incidents, people just shoot things on their mind without any triggers for such hurtful phrases. I had the phrase translated into several languages because to me, such incidents are a universal language even if you don't get what is being said to you.

"Don't let go Never give up, it's such a wonderful life Don't let go" -Wonderful Life by Hurts
How ironic that this exact part of the song was playing when the plane started shaking? I thought it might be a minor turbulence before landing but then I felt the plane going back up. The plane went round before we started descending again but the turbulence was even worse the second time, the pilot then announced that we're experiencing some bad air bumps and if the third landing trial is unsuccessful we're going to have to skip landing in Amsterdam and head to another nearby airport. The song was still playing with the lyrics speaking to someone like me who pays attention to signs, perhaps this how my Portugal trip is going to end? And what about my connecting flight from Amsterdam to Cairo?! Not like I was in a hurry to get back home.
The man next to me started saying that he's never experienced anything like this and he flies quite often to Portugal and Brazil for his business while the lady next to him was obviously panicking with her head down and holding tight to that seat - with her super long manicured nails resembling Nicki Minaj but in afro. After the flight attendant refused to let her go to the bathroom, I added a third prayer,"Please don't let that woman throw up next to us!" Going in for the third landing attempt, the sound of the engines got louder, I could see the lights on the wing going up and down in the dark, intense prayers in my head and I stuck to the seat while occasionally glancing to see how 'Nicki Minaj' was holding up. Thankfully, we landed safely.
This song -which is a favorite of mine- is still on my playlist even though everytime I hear it, I remember those intense moments. Got any song that reminds you of a happy/ confusing/ scary/ awkward travel moment?

First encounter with a Rojak (fruit salad) in SE Asia. It was delicious with fruits that we don’t have back home like starfruit and juicy rose apples but then I noticed a tiny eye floating in that sauce, thinking it was an insect I decided to ignore it and pushed it to the side only to start noticing more eyes. Turns out this was a fruit salad with crushed shrimp paste. KL, Malaysia Part of a food doodling series because it was too good to instagram first before eating #tooGoodToInsta
