the july air wafted with the homey scent of peaches and fresh bread, sunlight streaming through the striped awnings as caroline moved between stalls with her tote hugged against her hip. it was her weekend custom to swing by main street market for a couple staples she needed to restock her kitchen with, picking up a jar of wildflower honey and a bunch of sunflowers she definitely didn't need but could never resist, their golden faces peeking over the hood of her bag. her pup, chloe (who caroline rarely left the house without) was safely tucked under one arm, sniffing for samples and not being shy about it. she was making small talk with the vendor until someone appeared behind her, prompting the female to step aside for the next customer. upon turning, she almost collided with someone headfirst, thankfully catching herself in time. "oh sorry, i didn't see you there-" the warm apology left her lips as her gaze settled on the other's face.
most weekends, he woke up with the sunrise, his schedule still dictated by the patterns of oli's sleeping schedule that didn't allow for late nights. it worked in his favor, a peace and quiet to the saturday markets whenever he arrived early - vendors still in the midst of setting up, pastries fresh out of the oven, and the best produce free to be selected before the crowds got to them. he wasn't used to the bustle of the people, but the summer heat had trickled in with a slowness that had made him later than normal - the early afternoon sun shining down as he weaved his way through the familiar stands and made his way through his shopping list for the week. attempting to decide between two kinds of tomatoes, he was fully engrossed in the task, very nearly missing the woman that almost collided into him. a hand reached out to catch her elbow and try to steady her, before thinking better of it and giving her space with a tentative smile. "that's alright - clearly i should have paid better attention too, instead of being engrossed in the produce. lesson learned to not get fixated on tomatoes next time i'm at the market and there are this many people around." his eyes flickered down to the dog tucked under her arm, amused at the way the pup seemed to be sniffing for the next treat. "especially when they've got precious cargo. is your pup having the time of their life and getting a lot of pets?"
Anippe exhaled softly as she roamed around the museum. Wide dark eyes happily looking over everything the room held, pausing to read each plaque, scanning over each and every single detail that the artefacts and artwork held. While the Egyptologist has held her fair share amount of times in museums, she always loved to find new ones. Granted, North Star House was not incredibly new to her anymore. She couldn't count how many times she comes here with Hattie or by herself the past month of living in Coyote Valley. Still, it was new to her compared to the museums of Luxor, Cairo, and Chicago that she had grown more use to throughout her life.
As she moved around, a tiny laugh left her lips. Then she realized she wasn't alone. "Sorry, I'm sorry," she mused, shaking her hand in apology. "It's just... Have you ever played Assassin's Creed Origins? This guy in this painting looks exactly like the main character from it. It couldn't be more than two hundred years old. Could be a coincidence... or the artist could've been a time traveler. What do you think?"

with oli safely tucked away in the children's portion of the museum for an interactive story time, caleb had been left to wander the halls by himself. if anyone asked, he'd claim that his reasons for staying were because it had been a while since he'd fully browsed through the museum. but truthfully, he was still struggling with a hesitancy to leave the boy unsupervised, although he'd been working on not hovering whenever he was left in the hands of strangers. even so, he found himself engrossed in the exhibitions and local history in a way he hadn't expected from a museum that wasn't nearly as large as the ones he was used to frequenting.
his perusal interrupted, he glanced at anippe - a friendly smile catching on his features at bumping into her here. caleb couldn't claim to be an expert in video games, but he could faintly remember a friend of his having shown him the game back when it'd first been released. his head tilted in consideration, squinting as he tried to make a judgement call on if there was something familiar in the painting's features that might ring a bell. "i'm not an expert, but i'll admit it does look like what i remember from the game - although maybe i'm just telling myself that because you mentioned it." a grin quirked on his lips at the mention of time-travel. "or maybe the animation team for the game did a pit stop in coyote valley and got inspired. but that's a lot less fun than time travel. i bet gaming forums would have all sorts of thoughts on the matter if you snapped a picture and brought it to them for comparison."

βΛβ‘ BASICS ββββ
full name:Β Β caleb thomas forrester
nicknames: Β tba
date of birth / zodiac: Β september 20, 1986 & virgo
hobbies: cooking homemade meals, running ( mostly to chase away his demons ), art - although he finds a bit less joy in it than he did when he was younger - and mainly practices it when he's helping oliver finger paint.
the forrester home was a warm place, loving and welcoming, but built with enough structure to dissuade misbehaving. caleb learned from an early age that being the middle child often meant being overshadowed, trailing in his brother's footsteps and cheering on as his sister shined. he wasn't extraordinary, but he was kind, taking care of his siblings and friends alike, and doing his best not to cause trouble where it wasn't needed.
quieter than most kids his age, he was most often found blending into the background, content with the group of friends he had and a notebook tucked into a pocket. he loved art, loved creating, and although his father would have loved to see him in more athletic pursuits, caleb didn't have much passion for the various sports he did try.
normalcy defined his life, no reckless abandon or misbegotten adventures that others his age took part in. he got good grades, had a high school sweetheart that feel apart as they struggled with long distance after going to college, got his bachelor degree in architecture and went on to do grad school to complete his training.
it was there where he'd argue his life took a turn for the better. he met ava, ambitious and fearless and just as invested in creating a perfect future for herself as he was. it wasn't long before they started dating and configuring a roadmap of their life together - how soon they wanted to move in together, get engaged, get married, buy a house, start a family. with her by his side, caleb felt like the missing puzzle piece had slotted into place and all that was left was to assemble the tapestry of their life together.
their life was ideal until it suddenly wasn't. baby fever hit him for the first time when he became an uncle and although they'd been putting the thought of kids on pause in favor of advancing through their careers, they started trying. the joy that radiated through their household at the first positive pregnancy test was short-lived. the pregnancy harder on their marriage than either of them had expected, especially given the unexpected complications that came along with it for ava. instead of drawings and pencils, his desk became littered with books and pamphlets, trying to find the best way to support his family when he couldn't shoulder ava's burden with anything else. but it mattered little when even the fully trained doctors and nurses couldn't save her, and as one life entered the world, another departed and he was left both a father and a widower.
the weight of guilt and grief threatened to consume him, his son the only thing keeping him from falling into a mindless depression. after weeks spent practically living in the hospital, and then, when oliver was released out of the nicu, in a home that felt like it was haunted by ava's ghost and the dreams they had for their future, he decided to pack up the shambles of his life on the east coast and head west to the town his parents had retired in.
while that first year in coyote canyon was the hardest, the combination of becoming a father, losing his partner, and uprooting the life he'd been building - caleb still struggles daily. the overwhelming responsibility of trying to fill in the role of both parents while still being in mourning hard to manage on the best of days. he's a regular at therapy appointments, channels his pent up energy into runs and exercising, and still wears his wedding ring on his right ring finger. the thought of moving on seems like an impossibility, a betrayal of the love he once had and especially difficult when he now has his son to consider.
his world revolves around oliver and his work; trying to build the best future he can for his son out of the ashes of old dreams and hopes. some might find him quiet and contemplative, but as he's settled into living in coyote canyon he's warmed up to people who bring out a more lighthearted side of him. not someone who jumps into things half-heartedly, he's protective and loving to those he holds dear.
βΛβ‘ CONNECTIONS ββββ
best friend: an unexpected friend, someone who clicked instantly and has become an essential part of caleb's life. secrets and hopes are shared between them and caleb views them as a reason why coyote canyon has started feeling more like a home.
gym buddy: someone who frequents the same gym caleb likes to attend or joins him for runs. maybe they've connected on a deeper level after a workout, maybe they check in on each other when one of them misses a session, or maybe they're simply silent companions.
good influence: someone who drags caleb into activities he might shy away from otherwise. he struggles being social and trying new things, and this is someone who's not afraid to pester him until he agrees to go ( and often enough, caleb ends up having a good time in the process. )
neighbor: perhaps they're friendly, each offering up a helping hand when necessary. maybe they're new and only recently acquainted. maybe they've helped babysit when caleb couldn't find a sitter. either way, he's likely done his best to befriend those living nearby.
fellow parents: someone caleb can turn to for advice or merely to vent parenting woes. he's struggling to handle things on his own and although he's read every parenting book and blog he can get his hands on, he's grateful for people who can give a perspective that's personal.
blind date turned good friend: while caleb might have been an awful date, this person was willing to give him a shot as a friend, salvaging an evening that he might've spent time cringing over.
mutual dislike: for some reason, these two have never quite hit it off. maybe one of them made a bad first impression, maybe their personalities clash, whatever the case, caleb has struggled to find a reason to warm up to them.
shared trauma: maybe they've both lost someone important to them, maybe they met at a grief counseling session, or ran into each other on the way in/out of therapy - whatever the case, they understand what the other is trying to overcome in a way that goes deeper than someone who hasn't experienced a similar kind of loss/ trauma. they don't necessarily talk about it, but know that they have someone who can offer a place of comfort and understanding when it's needed.
