yes honey now eat your forever peas and cola short ribs
sydcarmy is just so cute because they love being a little bit corny. they get tiny matching tattoos of one half of a bff pendant and sydney insists that "its not a couples tattoo it's a friendship thing because the first thing we are is best friends." they're going as puns for halloween and everybody asks what their costumes are supposed to be. they dress up and color coordinate for fancy events just to always end up leaving early to watch movies and nap. they take turns reading books out loud to each other before bed
No this is making me think of the "forever peas" dish served, and them being "two peas in a pod".
i love when sydcarmy get a little jealous and are the most obvious ever. carmy's little competitive bravado when he tells sydney hes a way better chef than shapiro and that shapiro is "just okay" and sydney scoffs and laughs is so funnyyyfndjsfnjsd like dude you have peacock mentality.
also sydney's freudian slip to claire, bluntly saying "i am also sorry that you are here" is my fave ever. and then she always gets so flustered and has to clarify, she says to claire she just meant because its so chaotic that night. then the next day she clarifies to carmy that she was not jealous. also TJ immediately figuring out that sydney has a crush on carmy and sydney insists she doesnt and its not even about that.
carmy is doodling tiny drawings of sydney in the margins of his unpaid intern notes. he even adds a little ✨
Carmy is definitely a sensual person you can tell by how it comes out in his art and how he plates food.
He didn’t draw Claire as sexy, though, when he was younger. Which was refreshing to me? Carmy isn’t interested in being gross about young women his own age he’s interested in wondering what Claire’s interiority is like.
Now, he drew erotic food drawings his whole life. As Donna flips through those notebooks in S5 it’s evident if you care just to dig even just a tiny bit deeper. He was thinking about sex at that point and projecting his feelings onto food.
We also see the same kind of sublimation in the drawings he makes for Syd of the chaos menu to make up for spending time with Claire.
In fact, it’s implied Syd reactivates this sensual part of him, not Claire. The show tells us Claire and Carmy’s relationship was empty and unsatisfying with both of them being fake (not honest/real) the whole time.
Meanwhile, Carmy is buying and giving Syd lavish presents based on her notebook she left behind, and making plates of food based on her outfits with different sauces trying to futilely find ways to impress her based on his past chef career.
Syd also dreams of food in the middle of the night (raspberries) and has an erotic panic dream by S4. Syd runs away from love (because it scares her, she associates it with loss and feeling alone like her dad is) and Carmy, meanwhile, is waiting on his second, third, fourth chance with her to get it right.
Which he finally does by treating her like a partner and a friend.
I don’t think all of this paints Carmy in a bad light for dating Claire, but it was never a serious relationship and Syd wasn’t going to let him get close to her right away.
It does get bad when he lets Syd influence him to call Claire his girlfriend just because he doesn’t want Syd to think he’s shitty.
Carmy tried it with Claire thinking that maybe sex and her knowing things about him would be enough for him to form a bond with her and it doesn’t work. He’s thinking of Syd when he’s with Claire.
Claire makes him feel like he’s on fire because he was feeling used and later admits he was using her, too, by trying to force himself to love her instead of being himself. People do this all the time IRL.
Which is different than just using someone for casual sex to me.
It’s a very interesting and different perspective on masculine sexuality.
And yes, he most certainly fucks up along the way by being competitive with Syd and not treating her like a partner and thinking he is the one that can get the stars.
Because that doesn’t build trust and intimacy. But he gets there.
Part of the reason he does is that Syd doesn’t compromise and he watches her every move in the restaurant.
She wants to see he’s going to put in the work first before she trusts him. She was smart and right to do it, too.
She knew he was asking her out on the Kasama date and asking her questions about her family to get to know her.
She was more concerned what the repercussions would be to her having him as a long-term partner to chase her dream and if he would mess that up for her.
He hasn’t met her dad by the end of S5 because he’s only just earned his way into her arms and his arms as a safe landing place for her.
But he’s clearly devoted to her at this point and they love each other.
Anyway, I think it’s pretty great.

jeremy allen white is ofc very fit. however, carmen "carmy" anthony berzatto is a flimsy guy who could only handle a couple weeks of high school wrestling and asks sydney to open pickle jars

THE BEAR (2022-2026) 5.07 | "Caramel"
sydcarmy makes me believe in #love.
Carmy doesn’t love cooking and hasn’t for years; he loves Syd, though, and he wanted to fix his family and the restaurant.
Syd still loves cooking and has just realized Carmy is in love with her and wants her to still be able to love cooking and have her dream.
Syd said her dream was to have the Danish two top restaurant, and now, she’s realized she wants Carmy, too, not just the restaurant.
And that Carmy loves her and thinks she’s the source of all that is good in that place. Which is pretty accurate, wouldn’t you agree?
Everything changed the minute she walked through the door.
It’s messy, and Carmy is a big ‘ol drama queen, but they were trying to take each other out in that alleyway fight and came at an impasse.
And then Syd used Richie to lock him out to test him and he called her bluff, but this show is very much a comedy (in the style of Shakespeare, lots of double meanings at all times), and I don’t think either of them were totally honest in what they were saying, except for these two things:
I want you to be my partner, and, you’re the best thing that ever happened to my life.
Everything else is them throwing spaghetti against the wall to see what will stick and being competitive, because, that’s what they’ve always done.
They’re also incredibly passionate about each other in ways other people can’t even touch. The shared cigarette and trying to get some release from the tension between them? Delish.
He is so mad about the Emmanuel thing and getting shut out of her personal life, and she is so mad he still hasn’t asked to collaborate with her, even after making his take on her dish better and in fact more than perfect (Scallop).
And like Syd told TJ, people will say some crazy shit to the people that they love the most.
And like Tina told Carmy not to go to bed in anger with someone you love.
About the hamachi story. What was really beautiful about it to me is that Carmy seemed to believe that Sydney’s appearance was like this miracle dropped out of the sky for him and it was pure luck that this amazing person had ended up here at this place, considering he called all her former bosses to learn more about her due to the restaurants current state. He sees himself as this person who chases away any speck of light or kindness thrown his way because of the whole Claire situation, and how people are treating him because of it. Sydney telling him about that dish really transforms his perspective. He is capable of giving good and receiving good through his authenticity alone. It was his spirit that brought Sydney to him, not his credentials. It’s not something that just happened to him, they happened to each other.
Carmy finally getting to be kind and soft spoken and good because he's so focused and getting Sydney everything that she needs to succeed without him that he's able to be present.
He loves her so much that it allows him to become the best version of himself, the version he really wants to be. He's not out of the kitchen, but he's out of his head.
They trust each other enough that he's abe to let go of that control that he's always grasping for, and she knows that he's there to catch her if she falls.
hey don’t think about how sydney’s cola braised short ribs were inspired by a dish her mom used to make. don’t think about how much carmy loves and has thought about that dish. don’t think about how carmy met sydney’s mom way before he gets to meet her dad the second he took that first bite.
carmy being inspired by sydney's dress (x)
This is the last time i’m getting baited into explaining plot but people are again calling it that Carmy left Syd with the restaurant .Syd offers him that a job is always available at the bear . then entire architecture monologue is him realising he wants to be back at the bear with food, family and Syd. The next scene after that is Carmy inside the bear texting Mikey all good wearing his apron in the office . We don’t know he is back for good but he will be that’s the thing . That’s the implication. This is not even subtext my god some of you messaging me are 😤
Guys don’t be mad at me but it’s so clear one of each stars is Syd and Carmy. That’s why they got it on the snow day coz he made the sandwich and she made the scallop. It’s too perfect . They got two stars one for each one of them. ( not trying to take away anything from syd) THEY LITERALLY DID IT TOGETHER.
