Hear me out, the Count of Monte Cristo, but make it RA
Will as Edmond Dantès
Alyss as Mercédès
Keren as Fernand
Halt as Abbé Faria
That’s all I’ve got. But I mean, a tormented, revenge fueled Will? I’m sat.
this is the only proper reaction to John Flanagan DYING TODAY ARE YOU SERIOUS

Welcome to the Ranger Gathering, coming June 2026!
How it works:
The Ranger Gathering will run for the entire the month of June, 2026. Each day has a prompt that participants can use to inspire works about Ranger's Apprentice, The Early Years, The Royal Ranger, or Brotherband.
Check out last year’s stuff here!
If you want to participate, tag your post with #ranger gathering 2026 so we can all find it!
A few notes on the Gathering:
You do NOT have to do all the prompts, or even most of the prompts to participate in the Gathering! The most important thing is to have fun and avoid burnout. Pick whichever prompts inspire your creativity, and ignore the rest.
The Gathering is meant to show off all forms of creativity! This means art, music, writing, memes, textpost, moodboards, playlists, or whatever else you can come up with. Don't feel like you can't participate if you're not an artist or author.
This blog is going to showcase a few posts from the tag every day of the Gathering, so make sure you support the creators with reblogs and comments.
Good luck, and see you all at the Gathering!

A snippet of an abandoned work
Crowley watches him across the map table in Castle Araluen, sleeves rolled, hair tied back, scars half-hidden and half-not. Will listens more than he speaks. When he does speak, the men lean in. Orders are given softly, and they are obeyed instantly.
He should be proud. And Crowley is proud.
He is also, quietly, purely terrified.
Because Will Treaty has built himself into something indispensable, and indispensable men are never allowed to stop.
Sexy, scary Will is my favorite Will
I’ll remind you that Horace tried to marry Cassandra on the boat on the way home from Nijon Ja and Cass said no.
Now I raise you, Cassandra immediately turning to Will and Alyss: “what about you guys??”
And Svengal marries Will and Alyss right then and there.
“Not entirely, I hope,” said Alyss. “I can’t imagine Will becoming grim and forbidding and taciturn…”
Hey so that actually hurt
Imagine the first time Will called her “Cassandra” after the war ends and then being struck by mind-numbing terror for a few moments because his mind thinks he betrayed her
I'VE ALWAYS BELIEVED that this is the reason that he's so stuck in the habit of calling her Evelyn. Despite ALL the years that passed, Will still calls her that, and every time, in every book, there's some short blurb about Will "really needing to get out of that habit."
But I've always thought that every time he says her real name, his heart races and his nervous system has a freak out, and that's why he can't break the "habit."
I love how Halt used to tell Will not to lean too far back on the chairs (like all parents) not because he was worried that Will would fall and hurt himself, but because he didn't want the chairs legs getting loose and breaking. He cares more about those chairs than his son.
I also love how as soon as he moved out of the cabin and it was Will's home he started leaning back on the chairs because "it's not his chair anymore so why should he care". He's such a bitch I love him.
One Single Thread of Gold Tied Me to You
Will had known for months now that his mentor’s engagement would disrupt the usual rhythm of their lives. Since the engagement itself had occurred (after Will had gotten over the shock of his mentor actually owning up to feelings), he knew that things would change. What he hadn’t realized however—until recently—was just how much it would disrupt things.
Sometimes i still cant wrap my head around the fact that rangers have this fucked up ritual of having their apprentices go through the being yeeted off horseback. Its like (un)natural selection ranger corps edition.
I imagine some ranger, 70+, retiring after long service in peaceful fief, looking back in memories and realizing that most dangerous things that happened to him was getting yeeted of his horse and being approximately 23rd person at Gathering asking Halt why his apprentice has a sword.
Okay though but imagine after the first war with Morgarath, I'm sure all the girls were LUSTING over Halt.
He was young, he was a new ranger (which by default makes him less scary), he had black hair, dark eyes, and a lean frame, he was like the definition of handsome, he was a literal LEGEND, and he is so fictional men coded! Like there is no way girls were not tripping over Halt left and right, and IMAGINE Pauline's reaction to that.
She was probably going around giving polite, but threatening, looks at every servant or village girl who shot Halt a longing glance. Just shooting them sweet but vicious looks that said "paws off! this is my handsome man, he's MINE, he likes ME, so all you other B!tch3s can go jump off a cliff".
Meanwhile Halt is just mortified at how interested all the girls are, and Crowley's teasing about it does not help.
Alternative: Halt is completely oblivious to it and doesn't realise when they're flirting. Crowley and/or Pauline points it out to him one day and he doesn't believe them at first, but then he realises they're right, and THEN he's mortified
When Will and Alyss told Halt and Pauline they were getting married they did it separately so Alyss told Pauline and Will told Halt. When Alyss told Pauline she immediately started crying because she was so happy for them.
When Will told Halt he didn't say anything for a couple seconds before just grabbing Will and hugging him. He did the same thing with Alyss. He was holding Alyss's hand, looking at the ring, and then he just pulled her closer and hugged her.
