with the way tfpyro ended his letter back home commenting on how his father's writing has improved and saying that Igna being 7 years old doesn't mean anyone has actually taught her how to read heavily implies that education in Tegrith isn't... the greatest. and it really makes me wonder how well read pyro was before he left home and how much he had to catch up on when he got to Moffa. How well could he read and write? How much did he have to learn on the road?

and if he did struggle with it, It gives a lot more context to his "wizard speak". Like he clearly went to greath lengths to learn how to speak eloquently to compensate for receiving a less than stellar education growing up, and it was most definitely necessary for any position they wanted to hold on the local council (and obviously being seen as capable and competent to other people is important to him). I can very easily imagine him specifically studying how the people around him talked and popular literature in Moffa to expand his vocabulary. he gets teased for it a lot but it makes sense that he wouldn't want to give anyone a single reason to dismiss him.

It also makes me look at how vocal pyro is about sharing information and keeping people up to date differently. He knows what it's like to be in a new place with a completely different culture while trying to play catch up with everyone else. He just wants everyone to be on the same page with all the knowledge currently available and helps anyone who seems like they're lagging behind (to the point where one could argue he's being a little too free with certain information). it's a trait that endears me to him even more lol I love you characters who extend a helping hand because they know what it's like to struggle.

Maybe she married late, because she was afraid of being alone as she grew old. Maybe she was an anxious woman, a practical woman, who couldn't bring herself to expect happiness but hoped for at least contentment, at least comfort. Maybe she didn't want children but she felt like she had to anyway. Maybe she resigned herself to being the disciplinary parent, because God knows her husband wasn't going to do it even before he left. Maybe despite all that, she was still doing her best to raise a child alone, a child who still idolized her father; he didn't have to suffer the indignity of his daughter seeing what he really was, as they grew up. Maybe she stopped herself from shattering their illusions for a long time, because the kid was already having a hard enough time and she didn't want to be cruel. Maybe her reward for it was that when her daughter left, they latched onto a new family, a better one that would never let them down, and she never saw them again. Maybe she died alone anyway.

ohhhhh I love the magic system in the flight

I love how complex it seems to be under the surface, how there are different theories within the world as to it’s structuring (which also probably covers for cc confusion or misinformation), the existence of Prof. Yew suggest that the study of the way magic works is its own scientific field which is SUCH A GOOD IDEA that I don’t think I’ve ever seen in fantasy before

turning the fact that aimros, the elementals and presumably also the celestial metals, have been drawn together into part of the lore is so cool

and the idea that transformative magic can make a wielder inherently unstable is so interesting, and ties into the fact that the ability to use magic comes from their dragons, and is not natural to humans (and cats, aliens, etc.) so would have some impact on them, we have magic potential, but need the dragons to make it actuality.

It makes me wonder what impact other magic users face, outside of the morphic group, how varied are the consequences?

I love interesting and unusual magic systems, I love magic systems that seem standard and conventional on the surface and then have complex underlying philosophy and ramifications, I love The Flight SMP

fuck wait i can't stop thinking about tf!ghostie's dad literally threatening to force her into an arranged marriage if she doesn't come home??? and how ghostie didn't want to become a knight — but it was either that, or have to be a wife to a man she knew she'd never even love (all while struggling with her sexuality)

like does aj know about her family??? i know in the revent stream aj mentioned that she never got to meet ghostie's parents, but that doesn't mean she couldn't have heard about them. like will this come back to bite ghostie later in the ass??? will she try to go home but ultimately can't bring herself to, because going home means being a coward and fully accepting that she is still the same person that drove aj away???

and even then, the academy literally told ghostie she can't leave. so now she's conflicted between 2 loyalties — her family & the academy. does this mean somebody is going to step in and convince ghostie that going back to her old life isn't worth it? (cough drift cough). or will we get an insanely angst-filled stream where someone from ghostie's past shows up to try and bring her home 😭

today is a "having tf!Ambear thoughts" kinda night..... she's going to have such a hard time after escaping her kidnapping, isn't she?

She's spent such a long time being unable to trust that she is loved, that her friends care about her. And during this time, fake Sun Guard took advantage of her. May wormed his way to her side and had access to her every vulnerability. All for the bounty on her head.

Ambear trusted him as much as she could, even with the accusations against him. Even when she knew that he wasn't the real Sun Guard, she hoped that their friendship would be maintained and he wouldn't hurt her. Sure, maybe it was a bit foolish to think that but she believed she had no one else to trust.

And just as she was starting to open up to people more, when she decided that she was going to stop by her friend's villages and tell them how much they mean to her!! She was having a good day!!

ok I’m gonna expand on my thoughts about the death aspect mages having chronic pain issues

I think it’s incredibly interesting, not only as an explanation for the character behaviours, but also for possible future issues aj and others could encounter.

It’s obvious aj is not handling it well, been that and everything else going on it’s no wonder she is constantly drunk or hungover or high or starving, swinging between attempting to numb the pain, and attempting to distract herself with worse pain, but obviously none of it is really helping.

It seems like this is something the school should be responsible for helping her manage, but I guess it reflects the real world lack of understanding and helpful treatment of chronic pain.

It makes sense why Osteon is so distant from the students, given the amount of pain they must funnel to them. Being someone who can feel all the potential pain of those around them in a school full of future soldiers is a hellish scenario.

It also kinda makes sense why previous death mages mentioned in predecessor books etc. are implied to be disliked, isolated or cold. not only because of the nature of their magic, but because they are likely trying to deal with their pain rather than prioritising other people’s perception of them, an entirely justifiable approach.

On top of all this it makes me curious about the magic system, if death mage covers decay and wither and presumably more, does this imply that ros is not the only life mage, could other students at the academy be classed as life mages outside of ros’s healing (eg. graecie’s blessings)

I’m not too familiar with everyone’s seperate abilities, graecie came to mind but her abilities don’t entirely fit “life mage” in my opinion, if anyone has input on this lmk (also it’s possible ros is just the only one in their class, and other subsets of life mage have existed/could exist, and just don’t at the moment) I also remember their being mention of those elder dragon riders with sun/moon abilities and wonder if they’re a part of the life/death mage classifications (I can’t remember whose stream I learned this from though)
