a very happy Mother's Day to Halt O'Carrick
how much do yall wanna bet that all rangers by default eventually get wrinkle lines right above the eyebrow that they raise on a daily basis?
imagine being 25 and already having the expression lines of a deeply disappointed father of five
crowley: years of leadership, politics, responsibility etc etc
halt: not even the stress of his job tbh. it’s just from raising his eyebrow at will every five minutes for fifteen years straight
and then will gets older and suddenly—boom—it hits him too. one day he catches his reflection and realizes he’s doing the exact same expression
full circle moment. horrifying.
Hiccup from How to Train Your Dragon and Will from Rangers Apprentice are the same boy in a different font
something about young underdog chosen ones for me
Alternative:
1. Halt stalking the Outsiders at the beginning of King's of Clonmel.
2. Halt and Crowley before acquiring the rogue Rangers. Halt and Erak recon. Halt and Horace with Deparneaux.
3. Halt, Gilan, and Will.

I didn't expect my day to start with the news that our Head Ranger, John Flanagan, has passed away. As I shared it with others, I then got to know he passed away two months ago.
Dear John, thank you for all you've done and for the world that you created. Ranger's Apprentice has meant a lot to me and helped me when I felt lost. You'll be greatly missed. Rest in peace, beloved Head Ranger🍂
(articles underneath the cut)
this is the only proper reaction to John Flanagan DYING TODAY ARE YOU SERIOUS
I don't know how to express myself right now. Rest in peace, John Flanagan, our real commandant. I wish a lot of strength for his family and friends during this difficult time. John, just know that you've meant so so much for me, and still do. Your books have changed my life in so many great ways, and I want to thank you for that. Rest in peace.
Deeply saddened to hear the news that John Flanagan has passed away.
Its been a long while since I read a Rangers Apprentice book, I got older, busier. But the series has such a special place in my heart. I picked them up as a lonely autistic 14 year old and made it my personality. I made my own cloak and wore it everywhere, because I felt that if I was a ranger, I was brave and capable of facing anything. I think i started drinking coffee because the rangers did. I got my younger siblings into the series, got to witness the joy it brought to them as well.
Thank you, Mr. Flanagan. Rest in piece.
Wow. Don’t even know how to start this. I knew this day would come eventually, yet it still feels so surreal.
I can’t accurately express how much of an impact Flanagan’s stories have had on my life. From giving me exciting stories to read at recess, to fueling my interest in storytelling and media analysis, to forging new friendships, to exploring Europe, to inspiring me to create my own work. My current long-term project wouldn’t even exist if it hadn’t started with me playing around with RA characters and my own OCs.
Though my thoughts on the RA and TRR series have grown more cynical over the years, I keep turning back to them. There’s a magic in those words that will never fully fade, even when every character has been met, every surprise spoiled. These books have had such a profound impact on me and it hurts to think no more is coming.
My heart goes out to his friends and family. I’m sure they don’t need me to tell them this, but he created something incredible. Rest in peace, John Flanagan.
Had an idea for a ranger superstition:
When the chain of the oakleaf necklace breaks, your next/current mission will end in disaster.
This disaster can be avoided by either giving the mission to another ranger or requesting backup. In other words, presenting the commandant or any other ranger with your broken chain and oakleaf is like a 100% solid argument for someone to either take over or join the mission.
so that's why Will's luck is so bad cuz he loses/breaks his oakleaf approximately every 3 months
Anyone else noticed that Alyss has zero traits unique to her, both physically and personality-wise?
1. She’s a diplomat
Alyss is far from the only diplomat in the books. There’s Lady Pauline, but she was her mentor so that all makes sense. But you know who else is a professional diplomat in these books? Cassandra.
I understand that, as a Princess, Cass has received diplomatic training. It makes sense she’s skilled in that area, I’m not mad about that. It’s just funny that, one trait that’s supposed to set Alyss and Cass apart as different characters, is actually shared by the two.
2. She’s kind and selfless
So is literally every other protagonist in this series. Next question.
3. She’s tall, thin, and blonde
Do I need to say anything here?
4. She’s afraid of heights
So is Horace.
But wait! How could I forget Alyss’ one unique character trait? Being possessive of Will! Thank god we got that cleared up. For a second there I thought she was just a one-dimensional love interest and nothing more.
I’m not saying characters aren’t allowed to share traits. I’m not saying her jealousy issues is inherently bad character writing. What I am saying is damn. Flanny did her so dirty.
5. She also has a dazzling smile, evidently, but doesn't smile often and was described as "solemn" In the first book. Kind of like Halt and Will
6. She's witty and sarcastic, but so is literally everyone else.
7. She's also an overthinker, as shown in book 6, but so is Will.
(oh! she is the only character I can think of that dies in a fire tho! yay for that!)
i've always been of the opinion that canon alyss is irrelevant and fanon alyss is who she actually is
I've been wanting to do this scene for a while, and @that-one-enby-ranger-2000 suggested I do this back in my word blog. Here it is. I'm back to my old background-hating ways, because there's so much more I could have included in the picture, but I didn't want to detract from Will and Halt in the infamous Boar Scene.
I love how Flanny gave Halt an established bestie instead of just letting him be a loner.
I also want to know what Wills reaction was when he found out Halt was super close and best friends with their boss
on that note, i'm glad flanagan gave everyone established besties, Will has Horace, Gilan has Will and by proxy all of Will's friends. Crowley has Halt, no one deserves to be lonely their whole lives, right flanny? rangers always deserve friends right? Except Maddie of course, obviously she did nothing to deserve friends... right
