The words soothe him a little, and Olek sighs softly. “Thanks.” His smile widens, partly in amusement. “Glad to hear it.” The last thing the Inquisition needs is accidental stabbings. “That’ll make for an interestin’ sight in someone’s day.”
“It will?” The question is asked absently, gaze sliding across their surroundings. He’d hidden the barrel, he was sure - and even gone through the expense of making the original owner of the container forget. A thumb presses to his lower lip, gently chewing on the tip of the digit before he speaks again. “I thought I hid it.”
“Cole–Cole are you talking about Sorrell–Is that who’s fears you’re sensing? Da’len, please don’t say things like that without telling me. I need to know if my daughter is in pain.”
“--Sorrel.” He repeats the name, bordering on a tender tone. There was something to be said about the love between mother and child; while he had not experienced it. [ --- the opposite in fact, the boy that used to be cole had hid in cupboards and sobbed his heart out to one that would raise a fist instead of a child. ] “She’s not in any pain. You are. Worrying, worrying, eating away at her from the inside.” Cole takes a moment, pausing. His head cants upwards to peer at the woman from his seated position. The concern that plagued her could be easily fixed - in his own head at least - with two words. “She’s safe.”
the apparel of this creature does little to dissuade or startle him–there are stranger customs on gallifrey ( or, were, he must needs remind himself ); it is the hollow, dead energy emanating from a human form. the master bites his lower lip, takes note of the tap-tap-tap-tap.
--There’s not a word he can think to say to the man at first. Hesitance leaves his finger hovering over the surface of the table, missing the final beat as the sound resonated through his head. It takes a small furrowing of his brow, hidden ‘neath strands of hair, to think through the noise. A lot of lives -- a lot of deaths, not all being the strangers own to take. But he had, once, hadn’t he? Snuffed out lights that had not been his to. But he had never done it out of malice; out of spite; out of madness. Worry holds his tongue for a moment, but the impulse to speak is still there. “It won’t stop, I don’t think it’ll stop. But it might be easier to listen to. One day.”

He’s not saying anything - slender fingers instead rap against the surface of his table; it was a beat that had managed to embed itself in his skull since the man had arrived.
The ex-First Enchanter didn’t know what uneased him most. Was it the fact that the other was a complete stranger to him? Was it the fact that these words echoed off broke walls inside of him? Or the fact that no matter how much these words made his skin crawl, it was because they were true? Orsino didn’t know what to do or say or think. He grasped for emotion that was closest. Anger.
“Stop,” the word was so close to a plead, “Who are you?!” He nearly snarled, his faced contorting into a scowl. It was so easy being angry. He spent years of his life simmering, trying to keep it all from overflowing so the Templars were not given a true excuse to silence him. These words were so unnatural. They should not be happening. So, he asked the next most important question.
“What are you?”
“..Oh.” The anger was enough to break off any further speech, expression lifting to something akin to an innocent surprise. It wasn’t what he’d expected -- the words were to help, to confirm that right was right, that the elf was doing his best. But it seemed to have back-fired. Hands raise for a moment, head shaking as he spoke. “It shouldn’t be going like this. Sorry, let me start again.”

it was damp, depressing, rain pattering down incessantly as the herald trudges over old crestwood’s muddy terrain, endlessly thankful that his boots cling to his legs above his knees. it’s a small luxury, that only the thick leather has to suffer the fate of being caked in sand and mud— but it’s hardly the best work he’s ever had to do. he grinds to a halt by a brick wall, pressing a gloved hand against it, leaning over slightly to catch his breath. (as relaxed as he can get, with spirits clawing their way through the air and mud around them.
after a short pause, he spares a glance for the young man beside him, flashing an exhausted smile.
‘ are you all right, cole? ’
“--Trapped, yelling, pleading-- they’re hurting, their hands are bleeding, their bodies are bleeding, stuck, clamped in the earth--” It took a moment to register that the Inquisitor had spoken to him. A moment to differentiate between what was there and what was not. What was really speaking to him -- who was really speaking to him. Amidst the swirling of spirits all clamoring for their time to speak, it had become difficult to concentrate. But concentrate he did, teeth scraping across a lower lip as he considered the question. The brim of the hat angled downwards as the mans’ head sagged, dragging his feet forward as they walked. “It’s not nice here. It’s not friendly.”

Maker, but it was a bit unnerving to hear someone say what he was feeling. Olek rubbed the bridge of his nose and smiled. “Yeah, never been a fan of hitting things out. How y’doing, Cole?”
“--It’s good. You’re good; hurting people doesn’t fix things.” Not quite the truth - he knows that now - but it’s the best thing he can think to say. Head cants to one side, lifting until he was looking at the other from his seat. “I found another barrel. I filled it. I’m okay.”

Dorian exhaled through his nostrils. “Not stop, just…” He glanced at the boy, or spirit, he wasn’t sure he truly knew which Cole was anymore, and tilted his head. “You can’t help this pain.”
Cole met the words with silence. Lips pressed together as he stood, body swaying as if wind would blow him right over. Dorian was not a man he knew how to help - not without starting again, without erasing and attempting to again and again and again. But he wouldn’t do that. Even if he wanted to. Even if he wasn’t sure of what he was if he wasn’t him while interacting with the mage. “-- I will help.” It sounded almost persistent. “I can help, you just-- you need to accept.”

The mage curled his lips and exhaled. “Rummaging around again, Cole?” he poked, fingers tightening over the grip of his staff. Dorian looked away from the broad hat covering Cole’s eyes, hiding him from whomever looked. “Could you… stop?”
“Stop?” The question was genuine, brow knitting as he frowned at the man. Stop being him? Lips pursed momentarily before his gaze lifted. “I can try. But if I stop then -- then what would I be?”

“Dorian--?” He’s shifting where he stands. Uncomfortable. Fleeting. His attention was immediately cut off by thoughts - cutting off the conversation he’d previously intended. “--Blood’s thicker than water, but tastes bitter. Copper, burning on wrists, burning his heart. ”

The world had seen twice as many villains as it had heros; it was comforting to know that there was someone here to help. Other than himself.
