Mentally the pressure got to him from a young age #His mother expected and expects so much of him. She cares but she has her own motives too #Occtis is different #Occtis cares in a way Julien has never experienced before #There is no pressure. No ulterior motives. Occtis wants what Julien wants. For his family to pay for what they did #They may want this to happen in different ways but Julien can tell how Occtis merely wants Julien’s help #Occtis doesn’t want to get something out of Julien. Occtis wants what Julien already does too of his own volition #The symbiosis of their relationship is something neither of them have experienced before. They don’t know how to handle it #So they fight.#Argue a little #Have spats for small reasons #They haven’t had to express these emotions before with anyone. So they have high emotion high intensity talks and arguments #Maybe they’ll get there in time. Maybe they won’t #Either way. I've seen a lot of posts about how Julien pretends not to care but clearly cares about Occtis, which is very delicious, but I also think Occtis' whole "I am tired of pretending I give a shit about you" thing is equally fascinating. I can't stop thinking about how right before that he says, "I am tired of trying to placate your anger towards me. I am tired of trying to do the things that I think you want me to do so you'll stop trying to kill me." Occtis, as has become very clear, was abused growing up, and probably learned to do exactly that - placate people's anger, do the things they want him to do - to try to avoid the abuse. That could be a whole other post but I think it's really interesting that he snapped and said that to Julien. He's afraid that Julien is going to hurt him, maybe even kill him, presumably because of him being a Tachonis. I wonder if that had anything to do with him asking Julien not to kill Koral - he was desperate for proof that a member of his family didn't despise him, but I wonder if any part of him wanted to see if Julien was capable of forgiving a Tachonis enough to let them live. And all of this after Occtis saying that only two people care about him and Julien not saying anything to contradict that. I don't think Julien is the only one trying very hard not to care. I think Occtis is terrified of caring about other people he is not certain already care about him (Thaisha and Thimble) because he's terrified of being hurt (again), so it's a whole lot easier to tell Julien and to tell himself that he doesn't give a shit. But like Julien, he certainly didn't act like someone who doesn't care - he jumped right back into his family's house to save Julien when his shadow dragged him back. Two people who are starting to care about one another and refuse to admit it because they're terrified of caring and I think that's very fun.

Considering Occtis finding out what Julien did.

Julien moving Occtis out of "I'm going kill your whole family and i might be kind enough to kill you last" to "i am going to share the most personal and intimate thing I have - avenging my family and my house - with you."

Occtis is a Lord of a Sundred House without a knight (shhhh Gaya go back to sleep).

Julien is a vassel knight to now-destroyed Sudered House (Aranessa please be okay).

He's gonna be so lost once his belt has all the notches on it. I really don't see him able to be still long enough for his mom's plan. But if he pledges his house to the Sundered House of Tacconis.....

I mean obviously marrying Occtis is peak because it fulfils the marriage part but with someone who twice over (presumably cis man and now dead) can't give him an heir.

(Picturing Maya yelling at Julien about babies and Julien taking Occtis's hand and blank-faced reassuring her that they are Trying Very Hard Every Night (and some mornings too) to get one of them knocked up.)

But back to Occtis finding out... Does it make him see Julien more as an ally? As a friend? He hasn't had many of those. Or will he see it as something to use? Will it make him feel responsible for Julien like he felt toward Gaya? Does it make Julien his? His knight? His weapon?

Occtis may be turning from his family but he's delightfully keeping some of those noble house thought-processes.

At the moment Julien is a weapon being self-wielded for revenge but there's a reason weapons shouldn't wield themselves. He's gonna need a strong hand on the other side.
