They listen AND they judge
hello everyone are we all aware that it's been 100 days since we saw samira mohan last? it is imperitive to me that you all know that it's been one hundred(100) days since we saw samira mohan. let's all have a moment of silence together
I do think it’s really weird how people act like Shane is the only one outed at the end of TLG. Like sometimes I genuinely think people forget that Ilya is also outed and that while Shane has worse immediate consequences at his workplace the overall geopolitical consequences are definitely worse for Ilya
(And if I say they people forget this because they fundamentally think of Shane as a gay man and Ilya as a straight man)
This was inspired by some posts fantasizing how how mean the press would be to Shane and how Ilya needs to realize that fucking Shane in their trophy room can’t fix that and like. Man. No matter how mean the Montreal press is to Shane I guarantee the Russian press is 10,000 times worse to Ilya.
Not that it’s a competition (I think they both put their phones in faraday cages and log off). But like yeah they’re BOTH going through it
This is a side effect of treating Ilya as if he is a white man from a western country.
Yes, Ilya doesn’t understand Shane’s struggle with racism. But Ilya has definitely experienced Xenophobia. Both in the books and the show, Ilya is insecure about his English. Ffs that infamous press conference scene where Shane answers for Ilya literally addresses the lack of understanding people (apart from Shane) have about Ilya’s struggle with a new language.
That’s xenophobia. And if we want to be a bit more realistic, Ilya definitely had all the Russian stereotypes slapped on him even before he was drafted. In fact I would argue that the way he is considered this wild Russian player as compared to Golden Boy Shane is also stereotyping Ilya on the basis of his nationality. And once Hollanov is outed, Ilya will be subjected to all sorts of biphobia, xenophobia and what not (alongside the bigotry Shane would experience obviously)
This is why it baffles me when people say that Ilya has more privilege in this case. Like again, the nuances are missing in some of these analysis.
Also, as a mutual pointed out, the privilege of being from a country with a strong passport is so common for the average fandom denizen that they often don’t even identify it as a privilege.
I wouldn’t either, if I weren’t an immigrant and didn’t have people in my life dealing with being born with a shitty passport. The way it constraints and controls your life is fairly unimaginable for those who don’t have first hand experience.
Both Ilya and Shane’s axes of oppression are moderated by them being absurdly wealthy and high skilled, and they’re pretty equally brushed over by the romance narrative.
The failure to clarify what the hell is the deal with Ilya's citizenship is actually the one part of TLG that is an unnuanced and non-negotiable failure to me. Because we establish earlier in the book that he still doesn't have Canadian citizenship, and he's worried about what would happen if he was deported to Russia after being outed.
So when they decided to come out on their own, the plan was to ... what? Just hope that Russia would decide not to cancel his passport despite a long history of not giving a fuck about Western perception and trying to poison its own citizens on foreign soil? Okay! And when they get outed, Ilya just tests out that hypothesis by crossing an international border for work on a weekly basis? Sure!
IDEK you guys. I'm not asking for a courtroom drama, but like two sentences of "Don't worry about it, Canadian immigration law in this universe works differently than even a cursory non-Canadian google search suggests that it works in our universe, everything is fine" would have gone a long way there.

I can't watch a television show until a demon possesses me and compels me to do it
Say it again in russian please...
Ilya: No. We will go back to our seats, watch the rest of this boring show, and then go to boring party after. And then, when you have been waiting aaaalll night, you'll come back to my hotel room, and I will maybe, Maybe, do more than just suck your dick.

ppl on ao3 should use the "this work was inspired by" option more. so many fics out there that put links to other fics in the a/n but theres a better option.....
☝️ use this!!!!!!
important addition i forgot that not everyone might know. similar to how ao3 bookmarks work, you can also link to non-ao3 fanworks using this format. so, for instance, if theres some fanart on tumblr that inspired you to write the fic? you can link that fanart to your fic!
