hey everyone who reads/writes F1 fic ! if I can seize your attention for a second I’ve made a google poll to harvest some responses about what we like, and what we want more of in the F1 RPF scene. This might be able to help writers who want to branch out but are scared there won’t be any readership for fresh concepts (read: me, a coward). it would be fun to have more diverse genres to read and write in. writing rpf already toes the morality line or whatever (and this is coming from a fic writer) but writing fic where actual people who have died are active characters in the story is just…terrible in every way. 

especially when one of them literally died just over a month ago.

I don’t want to raise any controversy, but if I can lay out my own take on the matter, without hurting anyone’s feelings or beliefs:

I think it was written respectfully and the message is beautiful. Personally, I would have a problem with a fic where deceased characters appeared as living characters, that would be truly far out (I mean living as in leading a normal life on earth). But once we are here, lets make this a broader question:

Why does it feel so off-putting? Too soon? As for the active characters: there are numerous James Hunt fics, is that alright because people perceive him as a movie character and not a driver, or because his passing wasn’t violent? There are Ayrton Senna fics, is that alright because it was 25 years ago? There is at least one story I know about similar to this one in its concept, that received much love.

What I personally find way more disturbing, disgusting and tasteless and utterly twisted are the various ‘character death’ (and ‘rape/non-con’, once we’re at it) fics, which are generally accepted with more benevolence than this one - speaking of morality, do we ever want to talk about that? I always feel my guts twisting just seeing the tags, and I literally can’t understand how anyone can write things of sorts - I remind you we talk about RPF characters here…

I really don’t mean to attack anyone, but I don’t find it completely fair towards a fic that wanted to pay respect, underline the legacy and certainly not to offend.

(I’d like to precise I had no idea said story existed until I saw this post and checked out AO3 - just so this doesn’t look somehow personal.)

The reason it feels “off-putting” as you state (personally I was horrified and viscerally disgusted) is that Anthoine Hubert died, age 22, just over a month ago. People are still grieving, his family especially. The other man involved in the crash, Juan Manuel Correa, is still in hospital from the injuries he sustained and still has a long recovery ahead of him.

While I (intimately) understand the general direction of creating fiction as a way of processing grief, there’s more tactful ways to do this that don’t involve superimposing Hamilton lyrics onto the thoughts and actions of a man who, had he not died in a fatal crash, likely would be on the F1 grid today.

There are more respectful ways of expressing respect for these men without pretending that you know them in any capacity. The golden rule of RPF is the acknowledgement of the fact that we treat these people in a purely fictional space; writing a fic of this kind as a direct response to tragedy by embodying someone who literally died as a result of it blurs the realm of the hypothetical incredibly uncomfortably.

Also, you mentioned both Senna and Hunt - the difference here is that both of those deaths were over two decades ago. The way we approach those who have died and their memories changes over time. 

Lastly, with regards to your concerns regarding “major character death” fics and “rape/non-con” fics - this all falls under the golden rule of RPF again, i.e. the acknowledgement of fic existing purely in a “fanon” space, as if the characters are all simple fictional facsimiles that simply bear the same traits as their real life counterparts. The question of tasteful ways to approach these kinds of heavier topics is a whole other discussion in which I have no interest getting into.

The last thing I have to add here is, in the words of someone far more eloquent than I:
