Any thoughts on the new Varus skin? How would it tie to old-lore, for you? (Honest question, I love to read your take on things because old-lore Var is still <3 )
//Aaaah, Iām glad you like my Varus enough to still send stuff even when Iāve been mostly inactive save for musing quotes ;v;
Well conquerer Varus, which Iām assuming is the new skin weāre talking about could be played one of two ways. (For me and my old lore obsession, at least.)One, which would fit with the core of his character without turning him weirdly to another faction (Though imoĀ the colors look more Noxian than anything fitting for Ionian) Is a potential offshoot of the choice he makes to take the power of the darkin corruption.Ā Now he makes this choice afterĀ his village is decimated. When the anger takes hold and he feels he has nothing to care about anymore. However, one could play it another way. Perhaps Varus has always had some power, he is one of the strongest and only defenses the village had, according to his old lore and the judgment. Varus was all the people had to protect them.
He chose to protect the corruption because it was a matter of x number of lives vs potential infinite number of lives if the power gets in the wrong hands.
Now I have two ideas for this concept.
One, Varus saysĀ āfuck itā and goes to fight the Noxians directly to save his village rather than waiting and battling them off the corruption. Taking the initiative would give him more chances to strike and leave the Noxian soldiers likely confused. (Clearly he was powerful enough to fend off tons of men as it was because he pretty much annihilated everyone that came.) He fights the Noxians and remains pissed that they came in the first place. So he takes up going after them for vengeance to wipe them out for nearly killing his people.
Of course, this would imply that this version of Varus is what he looked like before, or that his costuming and some aspects of his appearance changed post this fight, perhaps to make himself stand out more for what he is.
Rather than waiting until after his people are dead to take the darkin power, at which point he is filled with grief and entirely chaotic in mind. Enough for it to affect everything and allow the darkin to feed on him, he instead takes up the power before it gets so severe. This adds on to his already existing strength but because he took the power whilst still of sound mind, he is not overtaken by the darkin, but rather is the complete controller of it. The bow is merely a weapon, molded to his needs and the shape he prefers. Mixed with Varusā own prexisting strength, it takes on more of his traits as opposed to the darkinās while still maintaining the gist of its abilities. It spikes his power further and allows him to go much further than he ever could on his own.Ā
He uses this to destroy the Noxians sent to his village. I imagine he would send a clear message by daring to send at least one back alive with one of his poisoned arrows which upon making contact with whoever this soldier goes back to (presumably their command or some form of it) causes an outbreak that kills a fair number of people. A message to not cross the Conquerer/Arrow of Retribution.
Personally, idea 2 rings a bit truer and better to me. Although I donāt know yet if there is any official lore associated with the skin, Iām basing this purely off the aesthetic of the splash and model. Iād definitely say 2 is my option because it presents some more interesting concepts and ideas and allows for a much kinder path for Varusā life to take without turning him entirely into a cruel man.
He would definitely take up a much more proactive role in helping to protect his people and Ionia after that point.
I want to delve further into this at some point as the concept is pretty interesting to me.
I also considered an idea of it being Noxian Varus but that goes against the core of Varus as a character unless he pretends to be Noxian in order to destroy Noxus from the inside. Which would also fit well with the title of conqueror if heās trying to overtake Noxus from within its own depths. Could potentially also be an interesting idea to explore.Ā
Iāll definitely have to think on this some more but this post getting crazy long as is.
