This Brazilian Netflix drama is set in two contrasting worlds - a futuristic urban slum, and a tropical-paradise like ‘Offshore’, which citizens compete to relocate to at age 20. Season one was compelling, but felt like a wasted opportunity in terms of production design - possibly due to budget constraints. So when the ‘Offshore’ first appeared, in season two, it was nice to recognise the filming location as the beautiful open air museum and art centre of Inhotim. This was perfectly-chosen, offering not just an idyllic landscape, but also the use of the modernist pavilions scattered throughout, meaning that real examples of Brazil’s exceptional modernist architecture (as opposed to the unconvincing CGI renderings of season one) could be used. I’m yet to watch it all, but several examples of contemporary Brazilian residential architecture have also started to make appearances - all uncredited - including a couple of minimalist Tropical Modern houses by Studio MK27, which I’ll look at in a future post.
