he was ACTUALLY surprised the other teen respected his wishes and didn’t laugh. ( at least thats one thing he can do right ) if rush wasn’t so hungry right now he might have been embarrassed with how he was currently b e h a v i n g. but alas all he was focused on right now was getting the juicy burger into his mouth. it was all too soon before he reached the foil, crinkling it up and he threw it into the bag. it was then rush discovered there was indeed something else in the bag.
he reached in and pulled out the golden crispy fries and began to shove them into his mouth. he went a little more slowly this time. he did however have to MAINTAIN some sense of decorum. he ate making sure he swallowed before s p e a k i n g next.
‘–so where are we going ‘ he shoved another fry into his mouth.
“At this point,” Everett glanced at the dashboard clock, “probably just back to school.”
Truthfully, he wouldn’t have known where to go even if they’d had the time. And, seeing as Nicholas didn’t have any suggestions either, it didn’t seem like too great of a loss anyway.
Everett made his way down the street almost on autopilot. He’d driven this route a million and one times, rendering his meal the more interesting of his two tasks. As a result, he may not have been paying as much attention as he should have when the car in front of him slowed to a stop at the upcoming intersection.
“Shit!”
He stopped hard, but in time. By some miracle, he kept a hold on his food, sparing him some embarrassment, at the very least.

In a little bit of a rush today, dearies - enjoy!
rush didn’t even bother to look at young when he ordered the food. so it was unbeknownst to him that his classmate had ordered two meals. the older teen just kept his eyes outside hopping at his he GAZED intensely enough at the road beneath that all his problems would vanish. including his current one of being stuck in a drive through with everett young of all people.
nick only turned his gazed away when he felt the weight of a bag in his lap. he looked at the paper bag sitting in his lap and glanced back at everett who’s gaze seemed to be glued to the road again. ( did the man not understand english i said no )
‘ i said i didn’t want anything ‘ he shoved the bag aside and in the process he caught a wife of the greasy food in the bag. it was honestly so mouth watering and he really was hungry. glancing back to the bag he opened and peaked inside.
‘ is that a cheesebuger ‘ he probably said too loud for his own LIKING. with no dignity left at this point and resigning himself to his fate rush tore into the burger paper and began to eat.
‘ don’t say anything ‘ he spat returning to his meal devouring it.
It took all of Everett’s willpower not to laugh.
He could not, however, stifle the amused smile that spread across his face.
For someone constantly feigning composure, Nicholas sure was going to town. Everett was half-tempted to tease him--hey, careful, don’t get any of that on my seats--but decided to cut him a break. Obviously, if he was willing to swallow his pride long enough to accept the food, he needed it.
Burger in one hand, wheel in the other, Everett turned out of the parking lot.
Perhaps today wasn’t turning out so badly after all.
Stargate SG-1: New Order, Part 2
they scream for their fallen breathren
he was met with DEAD air in the proximity of the vehicle they were both sitting in. fine he wasn’t going to to talk to him then rush wasn’t going to talk either. it wasn’t as if he had anything left to say to him anyways. they were just driving through town the breeze blowing outside and nick was content to watch the building roll by and fade blending into the asphalt beneath them as they drove past.
when young pulled into the drive through rush had to old back a a sigh. ( typical the idiot forgets to eat ) he kept his gazed glued to the window. he was however taken by surprise when the other teen asked him what he would like. only his granny had ever asked him what he wanted to eat.
‘ –i ‘ he stopped himseld. ( your not taking his charity ) ‘ i don’t want anything. i’m fine ‘ it wasn’t said particularly bitter, besides he had already had a snack. sure he was hungry but rush would be dammed before he let military boy buy him lunch.
I don’t want anything. I’m fine.
Everett was all too familiar with that response. That’s the kind of response you get when offering to buy your date popcorn at the movies, when they really want some, but they decline to be ‘polite,’ or out of some kind of misplaced embarrassment.
Except this certainly wasn’t a date. And Everett doubted Nicholas was trying to be polite.
He probably should have left it alone.
And yet, when they reached the intercom, he proceeded to order two meals.
Because, thus far, today had been all about things he should have left alone, but didn’t. Why break the pattern now?
He paid for the food and dropped one of the bags in Nicholas’s lap. And, although part of him hankered for the smug satisfaction of seeing his classmate’s reaction, he returned his gaze to the road almost immediately.
figures young would have an off campus pass on hand. ( probably does this often ) rush didn’t go off campus a lot. and it wasn’t that the idea didn’t APEAL because it did ever much so, but he honestly couldn’t think of anywhere to go. most of the time he took to hiding at the back of the library doing reading for his classes. the teen wasn’t always given the chance to complete his studies at home. nick wasn’t sure if he would be physically able to do so on any given night. best to do it at school when he wasn’t in pain.
though today was different, he was in quite a bit of PAIN. his father really had fucked him up this time. nick wasn’t sure how he was going to get his arm to heal without proper medical. but he would have to manage there was no way he was going to a hospital. his parents would get involved and any help he had gotten would have been useless for he would be beaten as soon as he got home.
‘ doesn’t matter to me ‘ he said simply. and that was the truth. he really didn’t care where they went, just that they went somewhere.
Of course it didn’t matter to him, he wasn’t the one driving.
Fine.
Everett turned his attention back to the road.
I’ll choose then.
A drive-thru was the only reasonable option at this point. They didn’t have time to go far, and he suspected that food would improve his shitty mood. He knew it was wishful thinking to hope it’d do the same for Nicholas. Then again, he’d proven that he was human after all, so maybe he’d eat something.
Everett stopped off at the first burger joint he spotted and pulled into the drive-thru. He turned to Nicholas expectantly.
“What do you want?”
‘ vague much ‘ he g r u m b l e d under this breath. but then again what did he expect from the likes of him? the younger teen just had to swoop and play hero did he. well rush didn’t need a hero and he certainly didn’t need a certain everett young in his life, nor to play such a TRIVAL part.
he followed his classmate close behind the beat up looking green jeep in the distance. nick wrinkled his nose at sight of the vehicle ( figures, military boy would have that for a car ) he quickly turned his attention to everett when he slid into the car. rush fought the urge to roll his eyes momentarily, before he gave in a did so. honestly he would have done better just running down the hall and forgetting their little ENCOUNTER in the hallway ever happened. consequences be dammed at this point.
he could only give a kurt nod in reply before o p e n i n g the door to the passenger side and slipping into the seat.
Despite Everett’s anxieties, the security guard gave him no trouble. Just a flash of his off-campus badge, and they were home free.
Which pled the question: now what?
This was, hands down, one of the weirdest things he’d ever done. And, in that respect, the last thing he would have expected to be doing during his lunch period. Or ever.
Because this wasn’t one of his buddies, or some other kid, this was Nicholas Rush. The same Nicholas Rush who found a way to insult him five different ways before nine‘o clock, who treated him like an idiot when he asked a perfectly valid question, who made Everett Young so god damned angry that he woke up every other morning wishing he could just cut class. That Nicholas Rush.
And yet, here they were, taking the fucking scenic route together, like a couple of chums.
Everett felt crazy. His grip on the wheel tightened.
What was he doing?
“So, where do you wanna go?”
was he expecting rush to take his hand? ( of course he was that was why he stuck it out you idiot ) but alas for more reasons then one the older teen opted against the others help. he was not going to have young thinking he was more h e l p l e s s then he was.
so when everett started down the hall and didn’t look back nicholas almost opted against following him. ( heres your chance you can escape and you both can forget this whole thing )
but against his better JUDGMENT rush decided to indeed follow the other boy out. it would only cause more problems if he didn’t he kept telling himself as he made his way outside the building. he wasn’t sure where they were going, they hadn’t really specified. they just decided they wanted to leave.
it was quiet for a moment as rush stared at the car in front of him. he spoke after a few moments after there was nothing but d e a d air on the winds. ‘ where are we going exactly ? ‘ he questioned his classmate.
“Wherever.”
Locating his car in under three seconds, Everett was already moving across the parking lot. Admittedly, the jeep’s hideous green paint job wasn’t particularly hard to pick out in a sea of white and grey.
He reached the jeep and dug his keys out of his pockets, chancing a glance at the security guard in the process.
“Let’s see how far they let us get,” he muttered as he climbed into the driver’s seat.

the things I would do to this man…
Stargate SG-1: Lost City, Part 1
rush wasn’t expecting their eyes to LOCK. in fact he wasn’t expecting himself to look at the other teen it at all, but some strange reason nick felt like he had to. he let the feeling wash over him for now, be had to focus on where he was. and right now he was in the middle of the hall hunched over red r i m m e d eyes looking into the soft ones looking back at him.
rush snapped himself from the trance shaking his head. ( keep it together nicholas ) the words coming to him almost instantaneous. now was not the time to be relishing in a meaningless moment - though he would tell himself otherwise a million times - he had to the the BLOODY hell off this floor.
he could gather a sense of an awkward tension as the other teen pulled away. perhaps he also was startled by the moment.
rush stared up at his arm, wondering if he should take the hand. the older teen made a move to reach for it but the last second TORE his arm away and brought himself to his feet. ‘ i got it ‘ he said simply sniffing back his tears, wiping his eyes on his sleeve.
( he may not want to hurt me but that doesn’t mean i can trust him )
Displeased, but not particularly surprised, Everett burrowed his hands in his jacket pockets. He made his way down the hall, trusting Nicholas would follow, though he did not actually turn to check. He wasn’t his damn babysitter, for christ’s sake.
Although he’d been the one to suggest leaving, Everett wasn’t actually sure where they were going. There weren’t many places to ‘escape’ at this school, no unused classrooms or vacant dumpsters.
The farther he walked, the more he wanted to leave. So, when they arrived at the student parking lot moments later, it was no mistake.
Everett wasn’t exactly sure how much of their lunch period remained--or if the security guard would even let him leave in the middle of lunch, for that matter--but he figured it was worth a shot.
Been a little swamped with life, but there should always be time to admire how handsome Rush is when he’s angry and working! Which is all the time.
the last thing nicholas rush ever thought would HAPPEN did. it was if he could sense it coming. the words slipped out of the other teens lips seemingly effortlessly and yet rush was sure that was not the case.
the words were followed by a gentle touch to his shoulder that had nick freezing in place. his eyes grew wide and his shoulders TENSED. it was a natural reflex to touch. his body conditioned to think it was being harmed when he was being touched. even his grandmother couldn’t touch him. rush had established that boundary with her long ago, this way he kept himself from giving away his home life. his granny respected his wishes for which nick was thankful for.
so when his classmate TOUCHED him rush’s natural instinct was to pull away as he always did when anyone laid a hand on him. but when the other teens comforting words sunk in he stopped himself. young meant him no harm, and he knew if he j e r k e d away that would cause more problems and more questions. it was probably best if he stayed put. besides young wasn’t going to HURT him was he.
despite not pulling away and forcing himself not to be afraid, rush still tensed under the grip. the words still being processed in his head. on hearing them outright rush’s mind was screaming at him ( yes, say yes ) but his tongue frozen when he tried to. what came out instead was more of a choked sob, which the older teen forced himself to swallow down. the liquid tears b u r n i n g his throat as the traveled down.
nick his lip and FORCED his eyes closed with a sigh. they opened just as soon as they shut and he finally turned to look the other boy in the eyes the shattered and broken ‘ yes ‘ escaped his lips. and he didn’t care how stupid he sounded, he was just glad he was able to get the words out.
Everett held his classmate’s gaze a moment, caught by the honesty reflected in his eyes.
The look wasn’t, by any means, one of unwavering trust, but it displayed no sign of contempt either. Rather, it was raw, and telling, and Everett realized that it may have been the first time he’d ever seen Nicholas for who he was.
He couldn’t help but wonder if this changed things.
Because they weren’t friends, of course not. But maybe they didn’t have to be enemies.
“Okay.”
Everett dipped his head and pulled his hand away.
Once on his feet, he gingerly re-extended his arm, offering to help Nicholas up. Even if he didn’t take it--and Everett half-expected he wouldn’t--the sentiment was still there.
If anything, the gesture was a step up from that morning’s elbow jab.
