Editing your own work is like listening to your own voice on a recording. You hate it, but for some ungodly reason other people don’t.
What’s college like?
Freshman year I had a planner and color coded notebooks.
I’m a junior now and I have one coffee stained notebook and a dying pen I found in a target parking lot.
So today I watched a clip from Mighty Morphin Power Rangers on YouTube (circa 1995) and the red ranger said “that’s morphenominal!” and it was just so nice. So nice.
Three things to remember
1) Never be put off or discouraged from learning a skill because of how long it might take you. The time is going to pass anyway, do something with it.
2) Never be overwhelmed by the amount of people competeing for what you want. The difference between someone who’s made it, and someone who hasn’t isn’t necessarily skill, it’s persistence and grit.
3) If you are passionate about something (career or otherwise) pursue it. It might not be easy, it might even sound foolish, but it doesn’t matter. You have that passion for a reason, the other things will follow.
Part of my struggle of being a writer is how passive-aggressive I am when it comes to my skill. On one hand, I’m a god among men and why am I not already famous, and on the other hand everything I ever try to write is utter crap and I’ll never amount to anything ya know?
When it comes to papers for school and projects I never do a rough draft. When I post something online, I have a story board, plot development checklist, manuscripts, and a review committee.

So, quick context before I start. First, I am a college student. Second, I live just off campus. And third, my major often requires me to stay at the computer labs until the wee hours of the morning. Alright.
Two nights ago I was walking home at like 3 in the morning. I was super tired and bleary eyed from a project I’d been working on. Anyways. On the route back to my house, I have to walk through this parking lot where hardly any of the street lights work. It gets a little iffy after about 11. I was halfway across the creepy expanse when I noticed someone walking towards me from across the lot. I’m a paranoid person, plus it’s a scary parking lot so I made sure to keep my eye on him, and make sure there was no one else with him. He was about 6 feet tall and wearing a long, black trench coat and a fedora. And oh yeah, a freaking cane. Not the CVS, “help I’m old” crane either. We are talking carved wood, intricate designs, and a metal handle. All this just serves to ramp up the ol’ sketch-o-meter and and I’m on high alert.
Well as this guy gets even closer, I noticed he was staring at me. Like unaverted, I-could-kill-you stare. So I put my head down and started picking up my pace, and as I pass him, he does this thing. He takes off his fedora - which I could then see was leopard print - does a swooping, hand twirling bow, smiles, and says through no more than four teeth “Your majesty.” then kept walking like nothing happened.
There’s honestly no worse feeling than slowly realizing you have nothing in common with a friend, and knowing there’s nothing you can do as the two of you just sort of drift apart.
