The solvent seemed to be doing its job, as the hardened grime was slowly starting to give, making it slightly possible for Isadora to remove it with the old rag and some elbow grease. As she listened to Annaâs reply, Isadora nodded knowingly in empathy. It wasnât that she presumed to know Annaâs pain, emotional or otherwise, plenty of the crew had their own skeletons in their own closets, but as brothers-in-arms, that also meant they agreed to share those skeletons so that it was perhaps slightly less lonely facing them when they made themselves known.
Isadora knew only what Anna was willing to share of her past and she had no intention of prying, but perhaps it was the respect or the sisterly reverence Isadora had regarded Anna with, that compelled her to continue.
âAh, one of those?â She smiled softly. Some wounds tended to be more bothersome than others and not always because of their severity, but sometimes because of the memory attributed to them. âI know Tristan would probably tell you to rest and drink water, butâŚâ Isadora paused, taking the opportunity to pull out a small flask given to her as a gift, filled with an old ration of liquor. She gestured the flask towards Anna in an offering. âI find that this is sometimes better medicine.â
âAye, one of those.â Anna echoed with a self-deprecating chuckle. It was silly, really, that she even let it trouble her. But acknowledging the silliness of it didnât make her feel any less troubled. She looked up from the cannon and toward Isadora as she spoke again, the corners of her lips tugged upward a bit. âThat is precisely what Tristan would say,â Another chuckle, âAnd he wouldn't be wrong, but I much prefer your plan.â
Anna tossed the handkerchief down onto the deck, abandoning her task for the time being, and reached for the offered flask. Heaving a sigh, she took a hefty swig and passed it back.
âItâs a trifle, really.â Anna wasnât sure who she was trying to fool more, Isadora or herself. It was easily one of her worst scars, but there she was claiming the exact opposite. âItâs hardly the worst wound Iâve suffered, and the ache is dull and should be easy enough to ignore. The memories it brings with it arenât quite so easy to disregard however...â Anna shifted so that her back was pressed into the side of the ship and gave Isadora another pained smile. She felt a swell of gratitude, not for the liquor although it hadnât hurt, but for the camaraderie sheâd found in her crewmates. She tipped her head back to look up at the stars. âSuffice it to say, not every crew Iâve sailed with have been as savory as you lot.â
