My dear lgbt+ kids,Ā
If you listened to transphobes, you might assume that the whole concept of āseparate toilets for womenā was designed with womenās safety in mind - and it was, but not in the way you might think.Ā
Gender-segregated bathrooms emerged in the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century (so around the time women were entering the workforce in greater numbers in the US and Europe). But the idea behind that wasnāt rooted in empowerment or feminism:Ā
Women were seen as fragile and weak. Public spaces (and especially higher education or the workforce) were considered unsuitable for women. So, it was believed women needed separate ārestroomsā, assuming they might faint due to their naturally "delicate" health.
Separate bathrooms limited womenāsĀ access to education, work, and public life. This may seem counterintuitive at first glance, so let me explain: womenās restrooms were often located inconveniently⦠subtly discouraging women from staying in public spaces for extended periods. This was not about womenās safety, but about men wanting control over women.Ā
In Victorian ideals, women were supposed to be modest and āpureā, and this meant that they had to occupy distinctly different spaces than men . Separate bathrooms were a way of reinforcing their āproperā roles in society, emphasizing that their ārealā place is in the home rather than in public or professional spaces.
The argument that we need āwomen onlyā bathrooms to protect women is not rooted in history or evidence. They were born out of sexism, not safety.Ā
With all my love,Ā

at some point in your life you will be boiling fruit, water, sugar, and lemon juice in a pot to make a syrup or jam. the instructions will tell you to simmer for a certain amt of time. your timer will go off and you will look at the pot and go, "hm, this doesn't look thick enough. maybe i'll let it go for another 10 minutes." this is the devil speaking. it's only so liquid right now because it is at boiling point. it will thicken when it cools down. learn from the follies of my youth and do not let this happen to you
at some point in your life you will be making a sauce or a stew in which you need to add cornstarch to thicken it. and you will prepare a slurry of starch in cold water and think "this looks like way too little starch to thicken this amount of liquid." this is the devil speaking. cornstarch instantly polymerizes at 95°C and if you add too much it will turn into an impossibly thick goop.
at some point in your life you will be making some sort of cream based dessert that requires gelatin to thicken it. and you will soak some gelatin sheets in water and think "this is too few gelatin sheets for this amount of cream." this is the devil speaking. it will thicken in the fridge and if you add too much you will end up with milk jelly
at some point in your life you will be baking cookies. you will take the sheet out after twelve minutes as the recipe instructs and the cookies will still be glistening and soft. "these don't seem cooked enough," you will think to yourself, "i should place them back into the oven until their edges are nice and golden." this is the devil talking. this is how you get dry, overdone cookies. the cookies will continue to bake on the warm sheet for several more minutes and then harden up after sitting on a rack for a while. trust the process. trust the process.
at some point in your life you will be adding a small pasta to a soup and you will think "that is not enough small pasta." this is the devil talking. the pasta will absorb the stock and expand. this is how you end up with a soup that is a solid mass of soggy ditalini.
At some point in your life you will be adding garlic to a dish and you will think "that is not enough garlic." These are angels speaking. They are correct. Add more garlic.
Church potluck where the priest is too polite to say no, many proud moms offer him a plate of their prized dishes and he crumples like a bible page each time under their sweet smiles and insistent words
"Oh come on Father, one more bite won't hurt. Try it! I worked so hard on this :("
By the end he's too breathless to help the brothers with cleanup; he excuses himself to his office for a food coma and privacy to unbutton his cassock.
This reminds me of when I was a teen and my family's church hired a new pastor. I'll call him Pastor Luke. He was on the younger side, and handsome in a (fittingly) youth pastor sort of way: tall and slim, white, tawny-haired; teeth slightly crooked above an awkward soul patch. Everyone seemed a little bit in love with him, but the old church ladies were particularly obsessed. I overheard chattering about how pretty he was, how they wished their late husbands had looked more like Pastor Luke. They thought there was something especially noble about someone attractive choosing to devote their life to the church.
To get to know the congregation, Pastor Luke wanted to spend his first few months with us making home visits. Everyone wanted to host him for dinner as a show of generosity. (Weird competitive protestant nonsense, ya know.) My mom complained about how long we had to wait to host him, but his schedule filled up so quickly with adoring parishioners wanting to feed him their home-cooked specialties.
Meanwhile, there were the potlucks where he had to try some of everything to be polite: mac and cheese, potato au gratin, stuffed portobello mushrooms, homemade bread and butter, cloyingly sweet ambrosia salad. When he made his rounds during post-worship fellowship hour, his hands and mouth were kept full of blueberry muffins, chocolate chip banana bread, and cheese danishes. Someone was always there to top off his coffee with a generous splash of cream.
By the time he got around to having dinner at our house, the way the old church ladies talked about him had changed: Pastor Luke is looking well-fed, isn't he? He looks much more... comfortable. Looks less comfortable in his clothes, though, doesn't he?
His clerical collar, especially, seemed uncomfortable. His facial features were noticeably softening, the definition of his jaw lost to the plushness of his neck. The clerical collar dug into this new neck fat, and a double chin had started to obscure the square of starched white linen. During church, the vestments obscured his body. But afterward, out of his robes, his belly pressed obviously, indecently, against his button-up shirts.
I was anxious when Pastor Luke came to dinner. I was a closeted church kid with major daddy issues and was full of amorphous yearning. The pastor easily finished one plate of food, then two. I had fried sliced cornbread with cheese, so it melted into the cornbread's dry crumb, but also got crispy at the edges. When he had eaten all of it, he asked if there was more. I apologized that though there was still some cornbread left, it wasn't fried. He excused himself.
When he'd left the table, my mom whispered, No wonder he's getting so fat.
I ferried dirty dishes to the kitchen, and discovered Pastor Luke standing there, bent over the stove, dredging the unfried heels of cornbread through the pan of oil I'd used for frying. There was a sheen of grease from his mouth to his undefined chin. He laughed when he saw me, unbothered.
It's just so good, I couldn't help myself.
And he shoved the rest of the cornbread, dripping with oil, into his mouth. When he chewed, I could see a yellowish grease stain on his collar.
Pastor Luke's transformation didn't lose him any affection with the congregation. If anything, it endeared him to us. He was no longer a novelty; because he wasn't new anymore, yes, but also because he better matched what the old church ladies expected a pastor to look like. He was no longer remarkable in his youthful prettiness. He looked older with the added weight, jowls lending seriousness to his expressions, his movements slower and more deliberate now that he was weighed down. It was not such a great sacrifice for him to have devoted his life to the church, not now that the congregation had fattened him into something only really suited to this particular lifestyle.
Ohhh myguckinggof
I'M IN TEARS. Sometimes you read something so goddamn beautiful and unintentionally depraved it brings a tear to your eye.
